China’s first subway tunnel (隧道) is below the country’s first bridge on the river, the Wuhan Yangtze
River (长江) Bridge, and it’s the first road tunnel under the river. It connects (连接) the city’s main areas (地
区)—Wuchang and Hanyang. There are government (政府) offices and universities in Wuchang, while Hanyang
is the business center.
It used to take half an hour to travel between the two areas, but now the travel time is only 7 minutes. The
tunnel is 3,630 kilometers long and four cars are able to run side by side. Around 50,000 cars can travel through
the tunnel at a speed of 50 kilometers an hour every day.
Before 1957, people in Wuhan could cross the Yangtze River only by ship or by boat. After that time, there
was the Wuhan highway-railway bridge. However, about 100,000 cars and 300 trains crossed it every day and the
bridge was in danger. The subway tunnel is expected to take half of the city’s traffic across the river. It’s so
wonderful and the city is famous for it all over the world.

China’s first subway tunnel (隧道) is below the country’s first bridge on the river, the Wuhan Yangtze
River (长江) Bridge, and it’s the first road tunnel under the river. It connects (连接) the city’s main areas (地
区)—Wuchang and Hanyang. There are government (政府) offices and universities in Wuchang, while Hanyang
is the business center.
It used to take half an hour to travel between the two areas, but now the travel time is only 7 minutes. The
tunnel is 3,630 kilometers long and four cars are able to run side by side. Around 50,000 cars can travel through
the tunnel at a speed of 50 kilometers an hour every day.
Before 1957, people in Wuhan could cross the Yangtze River only by ship or by boat. After that time, there
was the Wuhan highway-railway bridge. However, about 100,000 cars and 300 trains crossed it every day and the

I come from Yancheng, a small but beautiful city. It is in Jiangsu Province. Yancheng has a long history of
