The Shane MacThom á is Essay Prize for Primary Schools
To honour our historian Shane MacThomáis, Experience Glasnevin is proud to continue engaging young people with history through our annual primary school essay competition.
Experience Glasnevin offers engaging educational experiences tailored to the age and interests of all learners. Pupils explore over 200 years of history as they learn about the people buried within the cemetery.
Now we're asking you and your class to do the same!
Essay Title: Explore the story of Dublin's past in your own words
As Ireland's National Cemetery, Glasnevin plays a huge role in the history of Dublin itself. We're asking fifth and sixth class students across the country to write a short essay based on the title above, telling us about their favourite historical Dublin figure, or something about the history of the city itself.
Pupils will be able to share, in no more than 600 words, their account of any topic from Dublin's splendid history.
Teachers: Have your pupils use the writing template(模板) included in this month's Teachers Resource Pack to write their essay or, alternatively, they are more than welcome to type their essay.

In Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, a groundbreaking Shaoxing Opera adaptation titled New Dragon Gate Inn is captivating a new generation by blending traditional Chinese opera with modern theater concepts.
Adapted from the 1992 martial arts film, the environmental-style production transforms a studio into a jianghu (martial arts world) inn, where spectators sit inches from performers--six actresses portraying swordsmen, spies, and a spirited landlady during the 130-minute performance. This unique setting creates an immersive viewing experience, driving audiences to share clips online and sparking fierce ticket competition.
Chen Lijun's cross-gender portrayal of Jia Ting largely accounts for the success, reimagined from the film's elderly character into a kunsheng--a female actor in male roles. In her cross-gender acting, Chen smoothly engages with her co-stars, cultivating a fascinating chemistry. For example, she effortlessly spins the landlady around with just one arm. As a promising performer. Chen skillfully brings out the character's appeal through subtle gestures, warm smiles, and graceful postures.
Another reason for the play's sensation(轰动) lies in its contemporary nature. Unlike traditional Shaoxing Opera, which often draws from ancient scripts. New Dragon Gate Inn is based on a popular film with a significant fan base, catering to a younger audience and adapting it to better suit the current context.
The environmental staging also revolutionizes audience dynamics. Designed as an inn where spectators become "guests", the production places new demands on performers. "We need to abandon many of the stylized movements from traditional Shaoxing Opera and adopt a more natural, authentic and subtle acting style." said Xu Yena, who plays the landlady.
For Xu, modernization is vital: "Making it relatable to youth revitalizes the art's soul." By marrying tradition with bold reinvention, New Dragon Gate Inn has successfully drawn nontraditional theatergoers, especially young people, proving that ancient art thrives when embracing change.
24. What is special about the audience of New Dragon Gate Inn
A. They sit close to performers like guests of the inn.
B. They are allowed to interact with the performers.
C. The majority of them are crazy fans of Chen Lijun.
D. A number of them are traditional opera enthusiasts.
25. What does the underlined word "chemistry" in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. A scientific experiment in theater. B. An emotional bond between characters.
C. A physical reaction to stage lighting. D. An unplanned interaction with the audience.
26. How does the environmental staging influence the performers
A. It requires them to perform cross-gender roles.
B. It encourages them to learn film acting techniques.
C. It expects them to acquire strong martial arts skills.
D. It drives them to embrace a more natural acting style.
27. What can be inferred from Xu Yena's statement in the last paragraph
A. Traditional art is becoming irrelevant in modern society.
B. Young audience prefer modern operas to traditional ones.
C. Resonating with the youth can bring new life to traditional art.
D. Traditional art should abandon old forms to ensure its survival.
C
I highly recommend Antifragile to any student or practitioner of business management, risk management, or anyone with a curious mind and a keen interest in understanding complex human systems. The book delves into various subjects, including education, politics, economics, health, business, science, and risk, providing valuable insights and a deeper understanding of these complex topics.
Antifragile builds on the ideas presented in Nassim Taleb's earlier books, The Black Swan and Fooled by Randomness. In The Black Swan, the focus was on the extreme impact of rare events and the limitations of human predictions and forecasting. Fooled by Randomness emphasizes the role of randomness and luck in life and business outcomes as well as the difficulty of distinguishing between actual skill and luck.
While those books focus on "black swans"--rare and unpredictable events that have a significant impact, Antifragile further discusses the idea of antifragility and offers solutions to identify, build and benefit from antifragility in every aspect of life.
One of the main new topics addressed in Antifragile is that some systems and individuals benefit from stressors and disruptions(干扰) while others are harmed by them. Taleb defines complex systems as systems composed of interconnected and interdependent parts that exhibit nonlinear(非线性) behaviour. These systems are characterized by high uncertainty, volatility(波动性), and non-predictability and are often difficult to understand and control.
Besides, Taleb defines complexity as the property of a system that makes it hard to predict its behaviour or outcomes based on knowledge of its parts. He argues that complexity emerges from the interactions and relationships between the parts of a system and that it is a fundamental characteristic of many natural and human-made systems, including economies. societies, and ecosystems.
Overall, Antifragile is a thought-provoking and influential work that challenges readers to rethink their assumptions about resilience and stability.
28. Why does the author highly recommend the book Antifragile
A. It provides practical tips for student and practitioner readers.
B. It concentrates on business and risk management strategies.
C. It offers deep insights into complexity across diverse fields.
D. It simplifies complex topics into understandable summaries.
29. What is the relationship between Antifragile and Taleb's earlier books
A. It contradicts their ideas.
B. It expands on their perspectivcs.
C. It disputes their concepts.
D. It addresses comparable subjects.
30. What is a characteristic of complex systems according to Taleb
A. Stable outcomes.
B. Straightforward interactions.
C. Absolute certainty.
D. Significant unpredictability.
31. What is the tone of the passage
A. Dismissive. B. Neutral. C. Skeptical. D. Enthusiastic.
D
Alongside the crisps in the snack aisle, supermarkets are now stacking shelves with roasted chickpeas, cheese bites, and beef jerky. An array of high-protein alternatives is appearing alongside low-fat and low-sugar foods. Dairy sections are packed with hard-to-pronounce fare such as skyr and kefir. High-protein diets have become mainstream.
On social media, food and fitness influencers recommend protein. Celebrities have made it trendy to look strong, rather than skinny. A trend is close to an obsession. Google searches for "high-protein diet" reached their highest point ever in January. Some 64% of Americans want to increase the amount of protein they eat. In Britain, Ocado, an online supermarket, figures over 40% of consumers have increased their protein intake over the past year. So what explains the constant appetite
Gym enthusiasts have been wolfing down protein for decades. More recently the less strong have also realised that protein can help them build muscle while feeling fuller for longer. Juergen Esser at Danone, a French dairy giant, says hunger for protein first took off among youngsters who want to look muscular. It soon spread to older people eager to stay strong and healthy. The pandemic got people worrying about their health and increased demand.
High-protein products are helping firms expand. Revenues at Danone increased by 4.3% in 2024, driven by high-protein yoghurts and drinks. The question is whether the trend has gone too far. The World Health Organisation recommends 0.83 grams a day per kilogram of body weight. By that measure, the average American or Briton consumes too much.
For food firms already struggling to meet multiple requirements, it is yet another challenge. Consumers do not only want more protein and less ultra-processing, but also more plant-based food and anything good for the gut(肠道). The Curators, a British snackmaker, has a balancing act to perform. When the firm began making soya and lentil chips, it settled on ten grams of protein per bag. Recipes with more were not as tasty. And as food crazes come and go, a pleasant flavour may be the most enduring requirement of all.
32. What can we learn about high-protein diets
A. High-protein foods on supermarket shelves are always low in fat and sugar.
B. Their popularity was largely driven by social media and celebrity influence.
C. The majority of Google users are obsessed with adopting high-protein diets.
D. The consumption of high-protein diets in America is higher than that in Britain.
33. How does the author develop the idea in Paragraph 3
A. By presenting a series of statistical data.
B. By tracing the spread of the trend over time.
C. By analyzing the benefits through expert opinions.
D. By comparing the attitudes across different groups.
34. What is the main challenge food companies face in the high-protein market
A. Ensuring that high-protein products satisfy nutritional guidelines.
B. Reducing the costs of protein-rich products to remain competitive.
C. Balancing the dietary preferences and health concerns of consumers.
D. Convincing consumers that high-protein diets are universally healthy.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Fueling the Future: The Science Behind the Protein Obsession
B. Protein Revolution: Whether Modern Diets Have Gone Too Far
C. The Rise of Protein: How Demand Reshaped Consumer Behavior
D. From Gym to Shelves: A Growing Appetite for High-Protein Diets

It's truly hard to witness many struggles of people, yet we often convince ourselves that there's little we can do to help. However, one extraordinary stranger in Argentina proves that this view isn't always accurate, and now his inspiring story is touching hearts around the globe and significantly changing the life of a family.
A couple of years ago, Alvaro Romero, a compassionate observer, noticed a young man cleaning windshields(挡风玻璃) at a busy street corner while his six-year-old daughter sat beside him, deeply absorbed in her homework. The scene of the father's labor and the child's innocent concentration struck Romero deeply. Unable to shake off the feeling lit by their situation, he approached them and started a heartfelt conversation.
As they chatted, Romero learned that the 26-year-old dad, named Mauro, also had a two-year-old son. This little boy was at home with his mother during the day, while Mauro took on the burdens of the world outside. However, because of family instability-particularly issues with Mauro's father-in-law, who struggled with alcohol addiction Mauro's daughter accompanied him every afternoon after school. Her laughter surrounded him.
Mauro had been tirelessly working at that corner for the past four years, struggling with feelings of despair as he fought to provide for his wife and their two beloved children. Despite the exhaustion weighing on him, he pushed through each dull day, feeling trapped in a cycle of endless labor and unfulfilled dreams. Deep down, he feared that he would die in doing the same routine and soul-sucking job every day, yet he stuck to the hope that his sacrifices would eventually bear fruit for his family. So he did, never expecting that one day his life would change for the better.

写作一:
Labor: The Foundation of Growth and Prosperity
Sophocles’ words, “Without labor, nothing prospers," ring deeply true and serve as a guiding principle in understanding the essence of progress and achievement. Labor is not merely a means of production but a powerful catalyst for growth on multiple levels.
Labor's significance isn't confined to grand, abstract concepts. Instead, it's deeply personal and practical. At our school, labor shapes character. When my class restored our neglected rooftop garden last semester, we transformed cracked soil into thriving vegetable beds. Through blistered hands and muddy uniforms, we learned patience and teamwork. Similarly, volunteering at a community recycling center taught me how sorting waste contributes to sustainable living-a lesson no textbook could match.
To strengthen labor education, we can take several steps. Integrate weekly hands - on campus maintenance sessions into the schedule, enabling students to take responsibility for their school environment. Partner with local farms for seasonal planting projects, so students learn farming and value hard work. Launch “Skill Swap” fairs where students exchange skills like pottery or coding. Labor education shouldn't be isolated but a perspective for all learning, cultivating well-rounded students.

参考范文:
Though uncertain how to help, Romero knew he needed to try. After careful consideration, he decided to take a photograph of the father and his daughter, capturing the essence of their bond and the struggles they faced. With a heartfelt message about their situation he shared the story on his social media platform in the hope of raising awareness and generating support for the family. As he posted it online, he felt a mix of anxiety and hope, wondering how people would respond to this intimate glimpse into their lives and whether it might inspire others to lend a helping hand.
The post went far and wide. Countless individuals were moved by Mauro's story. Within days, an outpouring of support flooded in from across the community and beyond. Donations streamed in, including not only financial aid but also job offers, clothing, and school supplies for his children. Local businesses stepped in to provide Mauro with stable employment, while teachers offered assistance with his daughter 's studies. This once-struggling family found themselves embraced by the compassionate spirit of many, transforming their lives through community support. And it's all thanks to the kindness of one stranger, who cared and acted to make a difference.

24. A 文中提到“...where spectators sit inches from performers”,说明观众与表演者之间的距离非常近,就像坐在客栈里的客人一样,这种独特的设置创造了一种沉浸式的观看体验。
25. B 根据“Chen smoothly engages with her co-stars, cultivating a fascinating chemistry”,这里的“chemistry”指的是Chen在与她的搭档们表演时所培养出的一种吸引人的、类似化学反应般的情感联系或默契。这种情感联系使得角色之间的互动更加自然、生动,增强了表演的吸引力。
26. D 在文中,“...the production places new demands on performers. ‘We need to abandon many of the stylized movements from traditional Shaoxing Opera and adopt a more natural, authentic and subtle acting style,’ said Xu Yena, who plays the landlady.”,说明环境式舞台要求表演者放弃传统越剧中的许多程式化动作,转而采用更自然、真实和细腻的表演风格。
27. C 根据“‘Making it relatable to youth revitalizes the art's soul.’ By marrying tradition with bold reinvention, New Dragon Gate Inn has successfully drawn nontraditional theatergoers, especially young people, proving that ancient art thrives when embracing change.”,Xu Yena强调了让传统艺术与年轻人产生共鸣的重要性,认为这是传统艺术复兴的关键。

32. B 文章提到“On social media, food and fitness influencers recommend protein. Celebrities have made it trendy to look strong, rather than skinny.”
34. C 文章最后一段提到“For food firms already struggling to meet multiple requirements, it is yet another challenge. Consumers do not only want more protein and less ultra-processing, but also more plant-based food and anything good for the gut. The Curators, a British snackmaker, has a balancing act to perform. When the firm began making soya and lentil chips, it settled on ten grams of protein per bag. Recipes with more were not as tasty.”这表明食品公司面临的挑战是消费者不仅要求高蛋白、少加工,还要求更多植物基食品和有益肠道健康的食品,食品公司需要在这些不同的需求之间找到平衡。
35. D 文章从高蛋白食品在超市货架上的流行(“supermarkets are now stacking shelves with roasted chickpeas, cheesebites, and beef jerky”)讲起,提到了健身爱好者对高蛋白食品的长期需求(“Gym enthusiasts have been wolfing down protein for decades”),然后说明了这种趋势是如何从健身房扩展到普通消费者,包括年轻人和老年人(“It soon spread to older people eager to stay strong and healthy”),最后讨论了食品公司面临的挑战。所以标题“From Gym to Shelves: A Growing Appetite for High-Protein Diets”很好地概括了文章内容,即从健身房到超市货架,人们对高蛋白饮食的需求不断增加。
