On the subway, at the bus stop, at the train stop and so on, we often see people watching micro-dramas (微短剧) on apps like Kuaishou and Douyin. These micro-dramas have spread all over the world through these apps. In 2023, micro-dramas made 37.39 billion yuan,equal to 70 percent of the money made by China’s film industry.
Chinese micro-dramas are also going strong around the world. Sensor Tower, a US company,said that over 40 apps for watching the dramas have entered the global market. By early 2024, these apps already had around 55 million downloads (下载量). One of them, Reel Short, has been downloaded more times than Netflix on the Apple Store in the US, reported Reuters.
International viewers find these micro-dramas exciting to watch. The stories are usually fast-paced and have many surprising twists (转折). This keeps people’s attention and makes them have fun. The short period of the dramas adds to their popularity. Each episode (集) may last from only tens of seconds to two minutes. People can finish a micro-drama in a short length of time, such as on their way to work.Also, most micro-dramas are filmed vertically (竖向地). This allows people to watch them comfortably without having to turn their phone screen.
Going forward, micro-dramas could open new doors for China’s cultural exports (文化输出). However, one challenge to be addressed is that many of them have similar themes. The dramas should cover more topics, not just the usual ones like time travel.

Lanterns have been part of Chinese culture for centuries and play an important part in many celebrations. In ancient times, there were mainly three kinds of lanterns:
Palace lantern
It was mainly used in palaces in ancient times. When making palace lanterns, fine wood was used. The palace lanterns were covered with silk or glass. Different kinds of pictures were drawn on the covers. These lanterns were not only used as lights but also as decorations (装饰) in palaces.
Gauze lantern (纱灯)
Less expensive bamboo and gauze were used to cover the lantern. Red gauze was used when making them. In Chinese culture, red lanterns are symbols of happiness. So red lanterns are always hung at important festivals such as Lantern Festival, Spring Festival and National Day in parks or along main streets. Shadow-picture lantern (走马灯)
It was usually used for amusement. The shape was much like that of the palace lanterns. There were two layers (层) of covers and pictures were drawn on the inside layer.
