Using filters (滤镜) is common among young people on social media. Filters can make people look more
beautiful and even add funny effects. However, Tik Tok is making some changes.
In November 2024, TikTok said that users under 18 won’t be able to use beauty filters that change their
features in ways makeup can’t. But don’t worry, funny filters like animal ears will still be allowed.
Why the change Beauty filters can hurt people’s mental health, according to BBC. A UK﹣based group
called 5 Rights found that 34 percent of girls aged 11 to 21 won’t post a photo unless they edit how they look.
Another report from Love, a beauty rand, found that 48 percent of girls who often edit their photos feel worse
about their bodies.
Seeing these edited image all the time can make it hard for young people to tell what’s real. They might
start to think that perfect, edited images are normal, which can change how they see the world.
Jessica Chalmers, an online child safety expert, said that TikTok’s move is “a step in the right direction”.
The ban (禁令) only works if users have accounts with their real ages. However, not everyone under 18 has
given TikTok their real age. To help with this, TikTok is testing smart technology to look at things like “happy
birthday” messages to guess ages.

In China, the Lei Feng story is well known. His spirit has been passed down by many people with cultural
differences.
Lugazo is a 24-year-old African boy. In 2017, he came to China to study. After arriving at the railway
station in Wuhan, he was helpless because he had no idea which way to go, and he couldn’t speak any Chinese. A
passenger sitting next to him on the train volunteered to take him to the university. The kind man was the first
“Lei Feng” he met.
The experience encouraged Lugazo a lot. Several months later, he joined the university’s Volunteer Team
and was given a red jacket with Lei Feng’s photo on it. The next year, he did voluntary work at the Wuhan
Railway Station. “Once, after I helped an old woman, her 5-year-old grandson came up to me and said ‘Thank you,
Lei Feng!’. That really touched me,” he said.
Another of his favorite memories was teaching English to children in a school in Hubei. Many of their
parents worked in other cities, so the children lived with their grandparents. The children were quiet and seldom
expressed themselves. Lugazo remembers a 10-year-old boy who was always alone in one corner. “I took him to
the teachers’office. We played games and became friends.” At first, the boy hardly took part in games during class,
but after a week, he was taking part just like the others. The change made Lugazo happy.

people like Lugazo give warmth to people in need.
