If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you a
re wrong. Haven't you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase
in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the are
a of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles(肌肉).
The study also found the effect(效果)is greater when the younger people learn a second langua
ge. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only
spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals" who had learnt a second language
before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that grey matter density(密
度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a pe
rson waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.“Our findings suggest that the
structure(结构)of the brain is changed by the experience of learning
a second language," said the scientists.
It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the
University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and math skills. “Having two languag
es gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible(灵活的),”he said.“Yo
u are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas."
The findings had the same result in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a s
econd language between the ages of two and thirty-four. Reading, writing, and comprehension
were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. "Studying
a language means you get an entrance to another world," explained the scientists.
12. From Paragraph 1 and 2,we can learn that .
A. learning a second language can make you smarter
B. grammar is not very important in learning English
C. you can start to learn another language if you are smart
D. it is best to learn a second language in a British university
13. The underlined word "bilinguals" in Paragraph 3 most probably means
A. people who study language learning B. people who can speak two languages
C. languages spoken by British people D. languages children learn before five
14. Dr. Andrea Mechelli and his team have found that
A. it is not very good to start learning a language too early
B. it usually takes quite a long time to master a new language
C. learning a second language changes the structure of the brain
D. people who don't learn a second language have no grey matter
15. What's this passage mainly about

The population of the world continues to increase, but in some areas the population is falling.Thi
s is true in Europe and especially in Eastern Europe. In Russia, the population is going down by about 1
00 people every hour! In Poland the population is also falling because people are leaving to work in ot
her countries.
One of the main reasons is a change of lifestyle. All over Europe people, especially educated wome
n, have a different attitude to children from their parents. "I have one child and she is enough for me," sa id Galina, a doctor from Moscow. Many women decide to have children later in life or not to have childre n at all. "I don't want to have any children until I have worked for at least 10 years,"said 19-year-old stud ent Hana from Prague. Her opinion is typical of 18-24-year-old women everywhere in Europe.
In Poland, the population is going down for a different reason. A lot of people, usually aged betwee n 20 and 30, are leaving the country to work abroad. Poland joined the European Union in 2005 and sinc
e then more than half a million people have moved to Britain, Germany, Spain and Italy.
Many governments are now encouraging people to have larger families.-In France women now rec
eive nearly $1000 a month for a year if they have a third child.

1. How many children does Galina want to have (no more than two words)
