“Do you get enough sleep ” The answer is probably no if you ask a tired student who is always taking a nap (小睡) on a classroom desk. “I couldn’t get to sleep and experienced a restless night again.” You may often hear such words from an adult. Not having enough sleep is a common problem around the world.

Though sleep is so important, many people these days are not getting enough. In a survey, twenty percent say that daytime sleepiness influences their daily work. They feel it hard to pay full attention during the day. However, they don’t seem to care. Some even show off how energetic they can be the next day just with little sleep. It may be time to wake up and change the way we think. We should realize that not sleeping enough is a serious problem.

Zhang Jianna is a street cleaner. Recently, short videos of Zhang directing foreigners have spread widely online. This made people wonder how she got such great English skills.
The 49-year-old Zhang comes from a village in Hebei province. After graduating from high school, she worked as a restaurant server and a store seller. In 2012, she became a street cleaner in the embassy (大使馆) area in Beijing.
One morning, a foreigner got close to her while she was working. He gently touched her shoulder, and spoke a lot of unfamiliar words to her. Standing there, Zhang didn’t know how to answer. The foreigner seemed to recognize her awkwardness. So he pointed to the street cleaned by Zhang and kept saying, “Good, good!” Zhang suddenly realized that the foreigner was praising her work in keeping the streets clean.
This experience deeply touched Zhang and she made up her mind to learn English. “I just want to help whenever someone is in need, whether it’s asking for directions or asking about visa (签证) process,” said Zhang.
Therefore, at the age of 40, Zhang started her personal challenge. Without a teacher, she began learning English from her children’s textbooks, starting with basic words and phrases commonly used for giving directions. With no fixed study hours, she made use of every spare moment. Over the years, she has filled over ten notebooks with her notes.
Memory was her biggest challenge. “Learning English at an older age, I would easily forget the words I learned the day before,” Zhang said. However, she stuck to spending any possible moment learning and practicing. Now, she has had a vocabulary of around 3,000 English words and can communicate well with foreigners. “Every time I help a stranger in English, I feel happy,” Zhang said.

Have you ever walked into a room and realized you couldn’t remember what you were looking for We seem to do this more when we are thinking of a few things at once or doing two things at the same time. For example, you’re crossing the street while chatting with a friend, or walking across a room while answering a phone. Some people call this dual-tasking. Everyone does it and we tend to get better at it as we get older and learn new skills.
Our brain is a truly amazing computer—more powerful than any real computer but it can only use so much energy at one time. Think of your brain as a power station, providing electricity for a number of cities. If some cities need a lot of energy by having all their lights on, other cities would have less power to work with. There’s only so much electricity to go around.
For young kids, dual-tasking is possible. However, some studies suggest that it can be a little more difficult for younger kids compared with older kids. Why The power station in their brain is a little smaller and can’t produce quite the same amount of energy as older kids.
So why do you sometimes forget to say something before you say it The answer is that you are likely to have been dual-tasking just before speaking. Do you get in trouble for feeding your dog on food from dinner under the table A new study suggests that by sharing “people food”, you might actually be helping to keep your pet healthy.
Many dogs are fed dry processed food. Science has shown that a diet (饮食) of processed food is not healthy for humans. Scientists from the University of Helsinki, in Finland, say (A) it is not good for our pet dogs, either.
The scientists discovered that the food a dog might find in an owner’s home such as eggs, fish, meat and vegetables may be better than a diet of just dog food. When the dogs reached adulthood, their owners reported that about 20% of the dogs showed CE symptoms (慢性肠胃不适症状) such as weight loss. However, if dogs had been fed a mixed diet while young, it was 22% less possible for them to experience CE symptoms later in life.
