Many people spend their vacations lying on a beach, but Kirsty Ross wanted to do something different. “During last summer vacation, I spent three weeks working in the hot sun, digging to find pieces of old cups and plates,” she says. “I worked really hard all day and I slept in a tent. My friends thought I was crazy, but I had an amazing time. It was my best vacation ever!”
Kirsty was working for a volunteer program in Tunisia (突尼斯) in North Africa. Groups or twenty-five young volunteers work together on archaeological (考古的) sites to find important information about the past. The volunteers have to be very careful, because it’s important not to damage the things they find. Many of them work at Tunisia’s biggest archaeological site in Carthage, but some of them work in other important sites in the country.
Kirsty explains why she chose this vacation. “I’ve always been interested in history, and Tunisia has a lot of very important archaeological sites. People were living there about 3,000 years ago. I love being in places that are so old. It was exciting to find bowls and other things that people used every day.”
It was harder for Kirsty than for some of the others. “I come from Alaska in America which is a cold place,” she says. “It was hard for me to work under the hot North African sun. But it was a wonderful chance to meet people from other countries and to learn about the past. I once wanted to study math in college, but this special program would certainly change my choice for the next year.”

Should books have happy endings Both parents and teachers want children to stay hopeful and positive. That’s why they think children’s books should have happy endings.
What You Need to Know:
◇Children’s books often have happy endings where good beats bad and the main characters find happiness.
◇Even so, there are plenty of children’s stories that don’t finish on a happy ending. In a version (版本) of fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood, written by the French writer Charles Perrault in 1697, the girl is eaten by the wolf. There are lots of other classic children’s stories with sad endings, too.
◇In 2024 a children’s writer named Michael Morpurgo said that some people think his books are too sad. But he believes that children can deal with sadness.
A Book Review Private Peaceful (《柑橘与柠檬啊》) by Michael Morpurgo is really a sad story, which shows how terrible the war can be. It breaks up families and takes away good people’s lives. The story makes me feel very sad, but after reading, I have learned to face and manage my feelings. Also I can better understand the value of peace. Sammy,10
What do you think Should children’s books always have happy endings Here are some different ideas.
◇Happy endings make children feel good, so they will have an active attitude towards life. ◇Children might lose interest in reading when sad endings make them feel down. Feeling good could encourage them to keep reading. ◇A happy ending doesn’t mean a straightforward (平铺直叙的) one. Stories that end happily can still be surprising and exciting along the way. ◇The misery (悲惨的境遇) which sad endings describe makes children understand the truth of life—filled with ups and downs. ◇Sad endings allow children to experience bad feelings like disappointment, so that they can have sympathy (同情心) for others’ sufferings (遭遇). ◇Reading a book is boring if you know for sure that everything will work out in the end.
54. Why do parents and teachers think children’s books should have happy endings

55. What is the purpose of talking about Sammy’s book review

Dear friends and teachers,
It’s my great honor to be here and give you my speech about “respect”. For me, respect is all about truly recognizing and valuing other people’s dignity and importance. It’s like a special force that brings people with different views closer and builds harmony.
Last month, during a heated class debate, my classmate Xiao Ming shared an idea that was different from what most of us thought. While some kids rolled their eyes, laughed, or just didn’t pay attention to him, I focused on his words, nodding to show I was listening. After he finished, I raised my hand and said, “Xiao Ming’s perspective reminds us of a side we haven’t considered. Let’s listen carefully.” His nervous expression softened into gratitude. Later, he told me my respect for his opinion gave him courage. Only at that moment did I realize that by showing him respect, I also earned his respect in return.
From this experience, I’ve learned that respect is the cornerstone of meaningful connections that teaches us to set aside arrogance, embrace diversity, and build a world where everyone feels noticed and important. Let’s make respect a part of our daily lives.
Thanks for your listening.
