Kerala Literature Festival 2025 — Where Stories Come Alive By The Sea
Held from January 23 to 25, the eighth edition of the Kerala Literature Festival featured 380 sessions, 500 speakers from 15 countries, and over 600,000 participants. Some literary giants are fully engaged, sharing the knowledge of literature they’ve gathered over the years and thus enriching the experience for their audience.
Here’s what went down at Kerala Literature Festival 2025 in Kozhikode.
Day 1 started with the ‘Children’s KLF: Storytelling’ group featuring a lively discussion about the challenges of adapting literature for the screen, whether as a screenplay or a film. Participants emphasised the difficulties of adapting a good book into either form while doing justice to the original work and the audience engagement in storytelling.
Day 2 witnessed a notable session ‘Amrut: The Phenomenal Global Story of India’s First Single Malt’, in which author Sriram Devatha discussed his book, which beautifully combines a remarkable business model with one of the finest alcohol produced in India, revealing several myths surrounding the wine-making process and sharing insights with the audience.
Day 3 featured one of the most interesting sessions, ‘A Wonderland of Words’, in which Shashi Tharoor reflected on his literary journey. He discussed how language is evolving, its variations worldwide, and why this should be celebrated. He also stressed the importance of reading in the digital age.
With literary giants travelling from around the world and their readers following, Kozhikode and the Kerala Literature Festival have established themselves as important destinations for book lovers. As 18,000-plus hockey fans filed into climate Pledge Arena for the Seattle Kraken’s first-ever home game, Brian Hamilton, one of the support staff members for the visiting Vancouver Canucks, lay out the team’s hockey sticks, masks and bottled water. As he did so, he didn’t notice the woman, Nadia Popovici, who took the seat directly behind him. Nor did she pay much attention to him. That would change soon enough.
Halfway through the action, Popovici’s eyes locked onto something odd on the man sitting with the Canucks players. Through the stadium glass, she spotted an ugly-looking mole(痣) on the back of Hamilton’s neck: reddish and raised with an irregular border. She had seen plenty like it as a hospital volunteer and soon-to-be medical student, so she was pretty sure it was a cancerous mole.
What she wasn’t sure of was how to approach Hamilton. “It’s so uncomfortable to have something on your body pointed out,” she told the Seattle Times. But she knew she had to say something. As Hamilton lingered near the ice between periods, Popovici, dressed in Kraken kit, tapped on the glass, keyed in a message on her phone and held the screen against the barrier: “The mole on the back of your neck looks like it might be cancerous. You might want to go see a doctor!”
Hamilton glanced at the brightly lit message for only a second. That’s strange, he thought. Walking away, he uneasily rubbed the back of his neck. A few days later, he visited the Canucks’ doctor, who agreed that the mole looked alarming and ordered a tissue examination. It came back positive — life-threatening if left unattended. Hamilton had the mole removed, and his recovery is excellent.
“She took me out of a slow fire,” says Hamilton. “The words out of the doctor’s mouth were if I ignored that for four to five years, I wouldn’t be here.” The two connected at the next Canucks-Kraken matchup, where Hamilton was able to express his heartfelt gratitude to his guardian angel in person and tell her that his mom loves her. No thanks were necessary, Popovici told the Athletic, “It was just one moment in our lives where we crossed paths at the right time.”
24. What was Brain Hamilton
A. An assistant. B. A coach. C. A player. D. A doctor.
25. How did Nadia Popovici warn Hamilton
A. By passing a note. B. By informing a doctor.
C. By typing a message. D. By telling him directly.
26. What was the result of Hamilton’s tissue examination
A. The mole was cancerous. B. He needed further tests.
C. The mole was incurable. D. He needed regular treatment.
27. What can we infer from Popovici’s words in the last paragraph
A. She regretted not acting sooner. B. She wanted Hamilton to thank her.
C. She believed it was pure coincidence. D. She planned the encounter in advance.
C
Before the advent of modern technology, it was nature that set the pace of the lives of our ancestors. Winter, for example, was a season to slow down, conserve energy, and survive. The seasons no longer govern the rhythm of our lives in the same way they once did, but there is no denying the influence that each one brings.
Spring, when new life explodes around us at this time of year with every branch bursting into pink and white, stimulates an undeniable urge to completely declutter my house: I cleared out drawers and went through every wardrobe, sorting and folding. Each bag I threw out made way for a much longed-for sense of peace.
However, it isn’t just our homes that benefit from decluttering: there are positive impacts on giving our mental health a spring clean too. Most of us are carrying a fair bit of clutter inside as well, though now we usually call it “mental load”. “Too much load can lead to impact on how we feel, and our cognition.” says Dr Emma Hepburn, a psychologist and author of books including A Toolkit for Your Emotions. “When we are mentally or cognitively overloaded, we can feel overwhelmed, irritable and physically we can feel more tired.” she explains. Much like with our homes, the more disordered things feel, the more overwhelming the task of clearing and decluttering becomes, so how can we begin to go about the work
“I find it helpful to write down all the things weighing on your mind right now,” Dr Hepburn shares. “Often I’ll use a brain illustration to do this — you literally take it all out of your brain and put it in a page. Even doing this can start to help relieve the load and make it feel more manageable as you see in black and white, and you can also start to see where you can channel your efforts and identify where you can tackle things.” Dr Hepburn suggests grouping our brain load into categories can really help to see how to reduce the load. Then there are the larger things that we need to make plans for. She says, “Having a clear plan really helps reduce load and make these things feel more manageable.”
28. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph
A. To compare past and present rhythm. B. To introduce seasons’ psychological influence.
C. To reduce nature’s far-reaching influence. D. To highlight modern technology’s disturbance.
29. What does the underlined word “declutter” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Decorate. B. Paint. C. Sort. D. Tidy.
30. What’s paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Physical symptoms of overload. B. Benefits of home decoration.
C. Causes for mental load reduction. D. Explanation of mental overload.
31. What’s the benefit of writing down mental burdens
A. To physically empty the brain. B. To make your plan clearer.
C. To prioritize and focus energy. D. To plan every single task at a time.
D
For as long as scientists have studied Mars, they have wondered what gives the planet its distinctive reddish color. Now a study led by researchers from Brown University and the University of Bern has suggested that a water-rich iron mineral known as ferrihydrite(水铁矿) may be the main cause behind Mars’s reddish dust, contradicting the theories developed before that a dry, rust-like mineral called hematite is the main reason for the planet’s colour.
Ferrihydrite is an iron oxide mineral that forms in water-rich environments. Until now, its role in Mars’s surface composition was not well understood, but the new study — published in the journal Nature Communications — suggests that it could be an important part of the dust that blankets the planet’s surface.
“From our analysis, we believe ferrihydrite is everywhere in the dust, and also probably in the rock formations as well,” said Adomas Valantinas, a co-author of the study. “We’re not the first to consider ferrihydrite as the reason for why Mars is red, but it has never been proven the way we proved it now using observational data and novel laboratory methods to essentially make a Martian dust in the lab. Martian dust is very small in size, so to conduct realistic and accurate measurements we copied the particle sizes of our mixtures to fit the ones on Mars,” Valantinas said. “The reflected light spectra(光谱) of these mixtures provide a good match to the observations from orbit and red surface on Mars.”
The finding offers a clue to Mars’s wetter and potentially more habitable past, because unlike hematite, which typically forms under warmer, drier conditions, ferrihydrite forms in the presence of cool water. This indicates that Mars may have had an environment capable of sustaining liquid water — an essential ingredient for life. “The study is a door-opening opportunity,” said Brown planetary scientist Jack Mustard, a senior author on the study. “It gives us a better chance to apply principles of mineral formation and conditions to tap back in time.”
As exciting as the new findings are, the researchers emphasize that absolute confirmation depends on analyzing actual Martian samples. Current methods — including spectral comparisons, laboratory simulations of Martian dust, and orbital data — have narrowed the possibilities, but these indirect approaches cannot yet replace the certainty of physical samples.
32. What can we learn about the previous theories on the reddish color of Mars
A. They were widely accepted by researchers.
B. They considered hematite as the major cause.
C. They were based on limited observational data.
D. They were proven using novel laboratory methods.
33. How did the researchers ensure the accuracy of lab-created Martian dust
A. By observing the dust covering the Mars’s surface.
B. By using large particles to simulate real Martian dust.
C. By studying rock formations and ingredients on Earth.
D. By matching the particle sizes to those found on Mars.
34. What does ferrihydrite’s presence suggest about ancient Mars
A. It had living creatures. B. It once had cool liquid water.
C. Its atmosphere was oxygen-rich. D. Its surface was extremely dry.
35. What is needed to fully prove the new findings
A. Samples collected from Mars. B. Comparison with previous data.
C. Analysis of reflected light spectra. D. Lab conditions similar to Mars.

A dog, also known as human’s best friend, is happiest when he’s healthy. Ensuring your dog’s physical and mental well-being means keeping it stimulated, even when you are not home. So providing him with a healthy lifestyle is key to your dog’s fulfillment.
Socialize your furry friend. Keeping it isolated or at home all day can be damaging to his emotional well-being and create fear when it finally does come in contact with other people or dogs. 36 Take your dog on a walk, to the dog park, or set up play dates with other humans and their dogs. The goal is to get your dog used to being around other dogs.
Establish yourself as pack leader and never waver. It’s important to show your dog love and affection, but he is a tribal animal above all else. Your dog will become confused without structure and consistency in his life, so be sure you stick to your role. 37
Maintain your dog’s confidence. 38 Actually, there are things that you, as its owner, can do to keep it up. Praise your dog when it has mastered a new trick, along with other accomplishments. Remember that your tone of voice is the key to communication with your pet; praise for him should sound different than a command.
39 The vet(兽医) will provide an overall health screening, as well as any vaccinations your dog might need. It’s best for puppies and older dogs to visit every six months, while once a year is adequate for adult dogs under the age of ten.
Dogs give us unconditional love and companionship, and in return, it’s our duty to provide them with the best possible care. 40 By taking these steps, you can help your furry friend thrive and live a fulfilling life.
A. Treat puppies and adult dogs differently. B. So, let’s make a commitment to our dogs today. C. Believe it or not, your dog does have self-esteem. D. Schedule regular veterinary appointments for your pet. E. To a certain degree, dogs are born with great self-confidence. F. For example, playtime is only for when he is calm and receptive. G. So always remember to take your dog’s social ability into account.

As a former teacher, science 43 is what I rank as the top. When we introduce “the scientific method” in Year 7, the final 44 is communicating the results. Presenting on the show allows me to do two things I 47 enjoy: talking about my own and other people’s science. The Sky at Night is a bigger 48 than I could have dreamed of. It means I can have a 49 not only in the content we present, but also in how it’s presented, and that I can make 50 for things we should include or questions to ask.
I also 51 questions at interviewees off-camera. I’ve heard “ 52 them for the interview, George!” a lot, but I rarely get a chance to talk to professionals in fields. So 53 with them is significant for me.
Whether 54 at a local school or presenting on The Sky at Night, communicating is a huge privilege. The actual doing of science is exciting enough, but sharing it and explaining why are 55 .

The year my mom lost her job, I knew Christmas would be different. There would be fewer presents and fewer holiday activities, and we had to skip some things. I was disappointed, but I didn’t tell her that. However, it was even harder to realize I couldn’t follow my tradition.
I loved music. Every December, going to the Grassland Music Festival with my friends was my favorite holiday tradition. I worried that it wouldn’t feel like Christmas without music.
The week before Christmas, we went to find our tree. Every year, we went to Green Farm, where the Green family planted, grew, and cut fields of evergreens destined to be Christmas trees.
“What about this one ” I asked. Mom pretended to check the height of the tree, but I knew she was checking the price tag. “Let’s keep looking,” she said. “It’s too tall.”
The music festival was my favorite thing about Christmas, but the tree was my mom’s favorite.
“This one ” I pointed to another tree. “I don’t think it’s quite right,” Mom said. “How would you feel about skipping the tree this year Maybe we can put lights up around the windows instead.”
“Sure.” I smiled for Mom. She smiled back, but I could tell she was feeling bad.
Christmas Eve arrived. Every year, we would drive around our neighborhood to see Christmas light shows. Some were small, like ours, just a few strands of lights. Others were huge and complicated, thousands of lights blinking and chasing.
We got into the car to attend the Christmas light show. Mom asked, “Ready ” But this time something special was in our hearts. She was fiddling(不停摆弄) with her phone instead of looking at me. “Yep,” I said, acting casual and trying not to smile. I had a surprise planned for her after the lights and didn’t want to spoil anything.

1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Mom looked down at her phone and pressed the button PLAY.
On the way home, I asked Mom to stop just outside Green Farm.

Dear Editor,
Excited about the new podcast column, I am writing to recommend the topic “AI in Study: Help or Barrier ” for the first episode.
Firstly, AI tools like language apps and virtual tutors have already revolutionized learning by offering personalized feedback and flexible schedules. For example, apps such as Grammarly assist students in improving writing efficiently. Moreover, this topic addresses a critical debate: Whether AI enhances learning or encourages dependency. By discussing both its benefits and risks, the podcast can guide us students to use technology wisely and responsibly.
I hold the firm belief that it will definitely spark meaningful discussions while resonating with listeners’ daily experiences. I am confident that this episode would set a high standard for the podcast series.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
Mom looked down at her phone and pressed the button PLAY. Suddenly, the car was alive with the familiar melodies of the Grassland Music Festival. Thrill and happiness flooding over me, as I recognized my favorite holiday tunes, I couldn’t restrain my excitement anymore. “How can you manage to get this recording ” I asked. Mom explained softly, “I contacted your friend to record the entire concert for you.” The music wrapped around us like a warm hug, transforming our simple car ride into a magical Christmas experience.
On the way home, I asked Mom to stop just outside Green Farm. Under the moonlight, I led her to a small patch of woods behind the parking lot. There stood a modest but perfectly shaped pine tree I’d spotted weeks earlier. “Merry Christmas, Mom,” I whispered. Her face cracked into a smile, tears blurring her eyes. It was not the presents or the fancy celebrations that made Christmas special, but the love we shared in creating new traditions together. This Christmas we truly discovered what mattered most — the unbreakable bond between us.
