With the widespread use of online messaging, writing letters seems an old-fashioned way of communication. But in China, a group of people have been trying to revive this practice.
14-year-old Wei Kangcheng from Fu Lei Middle School has improved his relationship with his parents after writing his first letter to them.

Wei’s parents thought he was too shy and reminded him to communicate with others more often, but Wei felt he had no trouble with social relationships. “I expressed my feelings in the letter, hoping my parents would understand me,” he said. Wei’s parents discussed the situation with him after reading the letter. “They said they would give me space to grow up in my own way. The letter has closed the distance between us,” Wei said.

The school was named after the famous translator Fu Lei and writing letters has been promoted for 10 years at the school. It holds classes in which students read from the translator’s book Fu Lei’s Family Letters. The book includes letters Fu and his wife wrote to their eldest son, Fu Cong. Students are also taught to write to their parents, who send letters in reply.

Nowadays many people get in touch with their friends by sending a text or making a call.
Scientists asked 200 people to reconnect (重新联系) with their old friends either through a text or a call. Most of them chose (选择) to send a text. Mr. Smith said, “I think making a call is embarrassing (尴尬的) for old friends who haven’t been in touch for a long time.”

Mrs. Brown told the scientists that she liked sending a text because she could have more control (控制). Mr. Green added, “I like reconnecting with my old friends through a text because nobody can cut off or interrupt(打扰)our conversation.”
The rest of them chose to make a call because they thought texting could make it hard to understand the true meaning of a conversation. They thought making a call was more natural because they needn’t overthink (过度思虑) the possible meanings behind the words.
