I had a great time with the film Turning Red, which follows Meilin, a thirteen-year-old girl who suddenly begins turning into a giant red panda.
The film was set in 2002 when I would’ve been around Meilin’s age. It was a joy for me to watch a film that I could relate to. The film illustrates the push-pull that many immigrant families face: how much of their culture to keep and how much to assimilate (融入). There are beautiful traces of Chinese culture throughout this film, including gorgeous food, time around the table, relationships with extended family, and more.
In the film, women in Meilin’s family suffer a curse (诅咒). As soon as they begin to blossom into womanhood, they transform into a giant red panda whenever they express any strong emotion. Thus, they have learned that emotional repression is the way to go. It was beautiful to watch this young girl choose the different path of emotional wellness instead of holding back her feelings.
It’s not a surprise that the director Domee Shi, who is around my age, chose this plotline. Many people of my age are on that similar path Meilin finds herself on. We honor our parents and what they have done for us, but we’re also choosing to be more emotionally healthy and trying to live differently than we were taught.
The part of Turning Red I particularly loved is the ending. Though Meilin’s mom, grandma, and aunts see that it’s possible to integrate their red pandas into their lives, they don’t choose that path. Instead, they choose to bottle their pandas up once again. However, they do get a new perspective on this young, groundbreaking girl. It’s such a sweet reminder that not everyone can go on the same journey toward emotional health, and that’s okay.
If all of them had embraced their pandas, I think the ending would’ve felt incredibly cheese and taken away some of the power of the story. So we get a conclusion that is satisfying and heart-warming without being too much of a fairy tale.
Why did the author enjoy watching Turning Red
She found a connection with the story.
She followed a life path similar to its director.
She adored the appealing design of the red panda.
She valued its emphasis on the beautiful Chinese culture.
What does the underlined word “repression” in the third paragraph mean
Disturbance. B. Control. C. Wellness. D. Expression.
What does the author think of the ending of the film
Bittersweet. B. Idealized. C. Realistic. D. Cheesy.
What is the central dilemma faced by Meilin in Turning Red
“Can I embrace my true self ”
“Should I prioritize my family ”
“Can I uncover the curse’s secret ”
“Should I explore diverse cultures ”
C
If you ever feel that the world is against you, you are not alone. We all have a tendency to assume that when anything goes wrong, the fault lies within some great intrigue (诡计) against us. If a co-worker fails the deadline, they must be trying to ruin career. When WiFi in a coffee shop is not working, the staff must be lying about having it to attract you in.
But the simple fact is that these explanations, which we tend to jump to, are barely true. Maybe your co-worker thought today was Tuesday, not Wednesday. Maybe the WiFi router was just broken. This is where Hanlon’s razor comes in — a useful mental model that never credits to intentional harm that can be fully explained by ignorance.
Applying Hanlon’s razor, a useful tool for rapid decision-making and intelligent comprehension, in our day-to-day lives allows us to become less judgmental, and improve reasoning skills. Meanwhile, Hanlon’s razor allows us to give people the benefit of the doubt, have more empathy (同理心) and teaches us not to assume the worst intention in the actions of others, the value of which is most pronounced in relationships, business matters, and personal happiness.
We all lead complex lives where things are constantly going wrong. When this occurs, a common response is to blame the nearest person and assume they have bad intention. However, when someone messes up around us, we forget how many times we, too, have done the same. Instead, the perpetrator becomes a source of intense annoyance.
To assume intention in such a situation is likely to worsen the problem. None of us can ever know what someone else wants to happen. Inability or ignorance is far more likely to be the cause than the desire to hurt. When a situation causes us to become angry or upset, it can be valuable to consider if those emotions are justified. Often, the best way to react to other people causing us problems is by seeking to educate them, not to dismiss them. In this way, we can avoid repeats of the same situation.
28. How do people typically react to failures according to the text
A. Face true ill intention. B. Shift current situations.
C. Misplace blame on others. D. Seek trustworthy persons.
29. What does Hanlon’s razor refer to
A. It identifies who is to blame. B. It is a device for router repair.
C. It avoids assuming harm by ignorance. D. It is an approach for colleague’s fault.
30. What does the underlined word “perpetrator” in paragraph 4 mean
A. An error maker. B. An issue fixer. C. A blame sharer. D. A familiar person.
31. What will probably be discussed next in the text
A. How to control the bad emotions.
B. How to instruct others effectively.
C. How to change the nervous relationship.
D. How to avoid reappearance of the same situation.
D
Bacteria (细菌) know how to rough it out all over the earth. Ask most of them where they’d truly prefer to settle through, and a kitchen sponge (海绵) would probably top the list. Yes, it turns out that the very tool we use to clean our plates, which is warm, damp, and full of nutritious food pieces, is packed of tiny life.
Lingchong You, a biologist at Duke University, along with his team, used computers to model the complex environment of a sponge for a 2022 study. He found that sponges featuring pockets of varying sizes are something that really matters for promoting bacterial growth. This holds significance as certain bacteria tend to grow independently while others demand the companionship of others. Within a sponge filled with holes and pockets, there exist such an abundance of diverse structures that everyone attains a state of satisfaction.
Nevertheless, it does not necessarily follow that these tools present a health risk to us as well. Bacteria exist everywhere and not all are harmful; in fact, many perform vital jobs. The important question is, therefore, are the bacteria found in sponges even worth worrying about
In 2017, Jennifer Quinlan, a professor of food safety, and her colleagues, collected kitchen sponges from 100 homes, finding that only 1 – 2% of those sponges contained bacteria linked to food poisoning in humans and the ones that did contained only small amounts of harmful bacteria. “The vast majority of bacteria on sponges do not cause illness, and they’re just going to make them smell.” says Quinlan. “Having said that, there is a possibility that if you use a sponge to wipe up raw meat that you could have some of those disease-causing bacteria on there, and studies have found that those bacteria can be separated from kitchen sponges.”
This is not the whole story yet. If dangerous bacteria happen to arrive on the scene, the sponge’s special make-up makes it an ideal place for them to grow and multiply. And there’s evidence this is the case.
What can we learn from the first paragraph
Sponges are perfect tools in the kitchen.
Bacteria prefer to live in dry environment.
Kitchen sponges are good home for bacteria.
Bacteria affect kitchen sponges’ performance.
33. What did Lingchong You find in his study
A. How sponges are exactly structured.
B. What encourages bacterial growth.
C. How bacteria react to the environment.
D. Why bacteria keep company with each other.
34. What does Quinlan think of bacteria on sponges
A. Relatively harmless. B. Poorly adaptive,
C. Surprisingly unpleasant. D. Widely distributed.
35. What will be probably discussed in the following paragraph
A. Proofs of bacterial threat. B. The classification of bacteria.
C. Methods to control bacterial growth. D. Research into applications of bacteria.

THE FACE-DOWN GENERATION
If you’re reading this, you were probably born in the 2000s, the 21st century. That would make you young, creative, connected, global, and no doubt smart. Maybe good-looking, too. Right 36
Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They think of you as the “face-down generation” because you use your phone so much. 37 Are today’s teenagers too busy texting and taking selfies to become successful in real life — or “IRL”, as you would say
38 Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter parents” who were always there to guide and plan everything for them. 39 With parents who do everything for them, today’s youth seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face-down generation need a heads-up Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They also seem to be enthusiastic and willing to become leaders. 40 There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to school.
If you are one of the face-down generation, there’s reason to be hopeful about the future. Chances are that you will do great and laugh out loud.
Moreover, how do you think of the digital world
But what do other people think about your generation
Children are free to play computer games on weekends.
They wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family.
They are scheduled with homework and extra-curricular activities every day.
Others think that today’s youth don’t want to face the challenges of adult life.
An increasing number of young individuals volunteer to contribute to their communities.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A few months ago, David was persuaded to run his father’s bookstore in the neighborhood. Each morning when David opened the door, he felt discouraged since online stores had been taking over the market and few people walked into the store. Although he had always believed in the magic of physical books, he was beginning to lose hope as bills kept piling up and his savings were running low.
One rainy afternoon, as David was sitting behind the counter in the deserted store, thinking about how to rescue the dying bookstore, a young woman entered and introduced herself as Sophie.
“I’m visiting one of my friends in this neighborhood,” Sophie said. “She recommended your bookstore for rare books and I decided to check it out.”
Sophie then wandered through the bookshelves, running her fingers along the books. After a while, she picked out a book on gardening — a topic she was passionate about — and brought it to the counter.
“It seems like you’re really into gardening,” David said as he rang up the book. “I hope it helps you grow your garden. Plants are like people. They need care, but they can really bloom if you give them the right environment.”
“Yes, gardening has been such a peaceful escape for me and it has also helped me reach out to people in my town,” Sophie replied with a big smile and proudly showed David a photo of her pretty garden which was filled with vibrant flowers and lush greenery. “It has become a community garden in my neighborhood!”
Before she left the store, she added seriously. “By the way, there’s something special about your bookstore. Maybe it is not the most attractive place I have visited, but it has an undeniable charm. I hope you can give it a right environment, too. Maybe it can grow into a place where people find comfort and connection in an otherwise big but passionless city.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
David still stood there after Sophie left and disappeared in the rain.

Should we have two-day weekends off
Recently, some high schools have started to offer two-day weekends, which has sparked heated debate.
First, two-day weekends have benefits. Students can relax and reduce stress after busy school days. They also have more time to spend with family or pursue personal interests, such as reading or sports. However, there are drawbacks. With fewer days for study, some students might fall behind if they fail to manage their time well. Additionally, long weekends could lead to procrastination, making it harder to catch up on schoolwork. In my opinion, two-day weekends can be beneficial if students plan their time wisely. By balancing rest and study, they can refresh their minds and improve productivity.
In conclusion, while two-day weekends have pros and cons, their success depends on personal discipline and effective time management.

David still stood there after Sophie left and disappeared in the rain. Her words kept coming back to him. For the first time in months, he didn’t feel the heavy weight of worry. Instead, he thought about Sophie’s words. “Sophie is right. A bookstore shouldn’t be just about books. It should be like her garden that brings the community together. What I should do is create an environment where people can bond-and then the bookstore will grow on its own!” David thought.
The next day, David decided to make a change. He set up a corner for authors to showcase their books and share their stories. Then he started to host weekly book clubs, inviting people to share their love for their own favorite books. He even set aside a place furnished with comfortable chairs and soft lighting for people to relax, drink tea and talk. To his delight, more and more people started to show up.
听力原文:【原文】W: Hey, Bill. Did it feel great to travel somewhere warm
M: Oh, yes. I love New Year’s celebrations in the city, but visiting small island beaches was perfect.
W: That sounds great. I left town to go skiing — the weather in the mountains was so snowy and cold!
2. M: To ensure your safety, please wear protective equipment when riding bicycles in this park.
W: You’re right. I’ll put on something to protect my head and knees.
3. W: I miss the food in my hometown. My mom cooks noodles and dumplings very well.
M: There are some pretty good restaurants in Chinatown. Why don’t we try the dishes there
W: Good idea! I’ll book a table! Let’s go now!
4. W: Oh, my. I almost made you drop your bags! I didn’t see you turning the corner — I’m so sorry for crashing into you!
M: That’s all right, Miss. Accidents happen. At least no one is hurt!
5. W: Tim, never consider anyone as an enemy. Whether they’re your friends, family or even strangers, forgiving others is always better.
M: That’s a great lesson. I first learned this at my job. I learned never to hold things against co-workers.
W: Exactly!
6-7. M: This afternoon, I must get to Jacob’s house on 14th Street in the city center. But I don’t want to drive in the rush hour.
W: Oh, it’s easy! Go to the 96th Street station and take the subway downtown. You’ll arrive at the 14th Street station in 20 minutes. And you won’t even have to change to a bus.
M: That’s the new subway line.
W: Indeed. Was Jacob your friend from school
M: Yes. He was my classmate in high school. Now, he wants to tell me about his new job.
W: Cool. Have fun!
8-10. M: Excuse me. I need formal clothing for an event. Can you help me select something
W: Of course, sir. We have a wide range of clothing for you to choose from.
M: OK. I’ve heard your clothing store is the best one in the neighborhood!
W: We’ve been in business for only one year. We can’t serve as many customers as large companies, but we care more about individual needs.
M: Great. I’m invited to my younger brother’s wedding. And I’ll be on stage at the party.
W: I see — this suit looks perfect. But it could take a week to make some changes to fit you.
M: That’s fine. They are going to have the wedding in a month, so I’ll have plenty of time.
11-13.M: Good morning, madam. I have an interview at 9:00 a.m. with Ms. Thompson.
W: Oh, yes. She’s the hiring manager for our company. I’ll call you into her office when she comes back a few minutes later. For now, please wait in this seating area.
M: Great, thanks. By the way, is there any person like me interviewed for this position today
W: Not really. Our company carefully chooses new staff members to interview. We look closely at their education and work history.
M: I only worked in clothing stores and restaurants when I was in college. This would be my first job after graduation and my first position at an electronics company. Would this be an issue
W: Oh, no. We accept many recent graduates. Unfortunately, the other secretaries and I can’t offer much more specific information on this subject.
M: I see. Thanks for your advice.
14-17. M: Thanks for accepting the invitation to my sister’s birthday party, Melissa. Would you like to go and wish her a happy birthday
W: Sure. But she might be surprised to see me since we’ve never met before. So, I feel slightly nervous about talking to her.
M: Relax. She has heard a lot about you from me. She’s really looking forward to seeing you.
W: Oh, that’s so sweet.
M: Let me introduce you to everyone first. Then I’ll show you around the room and we’ll get some food.
W: Great. So, could you introduce me to your sister first
M: Absolutely! She’s just over there with my dad. I know it’s a little crowded here and it might be hard to talk as the music is being played loudly. But don’t worry, everyone will love you!
W: I hope so.
M: Trust me. By far, the best thing about this party is the people here. Everyone is so nice and friendly!
18-20. May I have your attention, please I know it’s the end of the day, and everyone is eager to begin your holiday. But I want to give a short speech about the past year. Since the summer, we all have been focusing our efforts on the goal of creating three new products by Chinese New Year. Now, it’s just before Christmas, and we’ve already achieved this goal.
