Boston University Summer Journalism (新闻业) Academy
The Summer Journalism Academy at Boston University gives high school students the opportunity to expand their journalism skills and prepare for college. The academy offers two options:
● on-campus program —— three weeks, for students with journalism experience
● learn-from-home online program —— two weeks for all experience levels
For students interested in photography, we offer a special photojournalism track for both.
New for 2024 for on-campus students: Stories will be considered for publication in the Daily Free Press, one of the country’s top college newspapers.
Each option is organized into three parts:
● Classroom starts each day with a review of journalism fundamentals in a collegiate format. A university-level journalism textbook provides daily readings and writing assignments. Instructors cover story ideas, sources and research, interviewing, story structure, writing for broadcast and web, accuracy, and more.
● Newsroom provides time for students to apply what they learn in the Classroom part by reporting real news events near them. Students conduct interviews by phone, email and video to cover a wide range of stories.
● Guest Talks offer students advice and insight from journalism experts on topics such as radio reporting, media law and studying journalism in college. On-campus students also visit city newsrooms where they can hear directly from reporters at their workplaces, such as WBUR public radio and the Boston Globe.

As a grandma, who played on the Banff girls’ ice hockey (冰球) team 50 years ago, I finally worked up the courage to play the sport with my 8-year-old grandson and his dad.
“Grandma scored,” my son shouted.
“Of course she did,” my grandson said. “She was on a hockey team a really long time ago.”
My heart melted. Memories of playing hockey as a teenager began to flood my mind. In the mid-1970s, two brave Banff High School teachers started our girls’ hockey team and asked us to join the Minor Hockey League. We had many difficulties to overcome before our first game: learning the rules, adapting to hockey skates, and mastering stick handling, passing and fast skating.
Our first real game was against a team from Jasper. They skated fast. They dodged (躲闪) and passed and zipped up and down the ice like superstars. And then our captain got pushed into the boards hard. I stood there with my mouth open. My teammates wore similar expressions. Our coach — speechless. We all looked at the judge. He did nothing. Then, as I was making a pass to a teammate, I got hit. I rolled over, got up on my knees and gasped (喘气) for air.
“It’s a long way from your heart,” our coach shouted. “Get up!”
Those were the exact words I needed to hear to stop the tears and get back in the game. We lost 13-0. We should have been sad about it but we weren’t. We were just thankful we could all still walk to the dressing room.
A month later we played Jasper again. We lost 4-0, but they hadn’t killed us this time — both physically and on the scoreboard. A proud loss. Our final game against Jasper was at the Easter Tournament on our home ice. And guess what, we scored a goal — the only goal of the game. We were victorious!
Next month, my grandson will play in the arena where we beat Jasper years ago. I can’t wait to walk down the arena’s Hall of Fame with him and show him our team picture. When stepping onto the ice wasn’t as wobbly (摇晃的) for me as it is today.

7. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this passage
A. To promote sportsmanship.

When you look upwards in the middle of a forest, you might notice breaks in the canopy (树冠); you’ll see branches and leaves stopping just shy of the neighbouring trees.
This is called crown shyness (树冠羞避). It’s a way of social distancing for trees to keep themselves healthy, according to Meg Lowman, a tree energy expert. Since trees fight for sunlight and water, it’s important that they position their canopies strategically to increase as much the success of their leaves as possible.
Having some distance between treetops can lower the chance of a tree losing its leaves by brushing against neighbouring trees in the wind. The distance can also curb the spread of harmful insects and disease. Tree diseases range far and wide. Some are spread by insects, and some are the insects themselves, creating a disease in the canopy. By separating themselves from others, trees can avoid getting sick.
While crown shyness is mostly observable in tropical trees, the same lessons are applicable to other trees, like evergreens. Trees that have more space grow bigger and healthier.
Healthy trees cost less to maintain, provide better cool places, and clean water more effectively. If a tree has died of insects or disease, Lowman says it’s important to consider what is at risk before cutting down a tree. “We might lose a lot of native species in our backyard, our community, or our ecosystem. Trees let insects search for food in them, birds nest in them, and epiphytes (附生植物) live in them,” she says. “Trees are the ultimate support.”
“We can learn from trees,” Lowman says. “To be good neighbours, to be good citizens, and to always have that beautiful bow available to people or biodiversity that might need us too.”
8. What can be known about crown shyness
A. It is observed in windy areas.
B. It helps trees grow more leaves.
C. It happens among all tree species.
D. It is a form of healthy competition.
9. What does the underlined word “curb” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Control. B. Keep. C. Widen. D. Speed.
10. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about
A. The ways of protecting trees.
B The key role of healthy trees.
C. The economic value of forests.
D. The reason for keeping biodiversity.
11. What does the author think we can learn from trees
A. Biodiversity needs our effort.
B. Protecting trees is significant.
C. Trees and humans are inseparable.
D. Respecting each other promotes harmony.
D
Lab-grown chicken is finally making its way onto menus in the United States. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has recently given permission for selling cultured (培养的) meat produced by Good Meat and Upside Foods, marking a significant breakthrough for the cultured meat industry. These companies are able to grow small amounts of chicken cells into meat without the need for traditional slaughter (屠宰). However, it’s important to note that this permission is currently limited to chicken products. Both companies still require additional permission to market cell-cultured beef, pork or seafood.
Concerns have been growing among Americans about traditional meat production, which contributes to about 15% of global carbon emissions and can encourage antibiotic-resistant (耐抗生素的) bacteria growth. Additionally, it pollutes waterways with animal waste. And the animals themselves often live relatively short lives in cages. “The current methods of traditional meat production are at the root of many environmental issues,” says Good Meat CEO Josh Tetrick.
Despite these concerns, meat remains a significant part of many people’s diets due to cultural, traditional and nutritional reasons. Cultured meat companies position themselves as producing sustainable and proper meat, aiming to provide meat lovers with a guilt-free choice that satisfies their desire for tasty food.
The production process for lab-grown meat is relatively straightforward, with the main challenge lying in building sufficient production facilities. Both companies, now armed with USDA and FDA permission, can focus on expanding to produce enough cell-cultured meat to meet the demand. At the beginning, lab-grown chicken will only be available at select restaurants, including Bar Crenn in San Francisco and a restaurant owned by chef José Andrés in Washington.
12. What is a key feature of lab-grown chicken
A. It’s grown from artificial materials.
B. It originates from cultured chicken cells.
C. It has the advantage of low production costs.
D. It’s preferred for its taste over regular chicken.
13. What is the problem with traditional meat production
A. It goes against its sustainable practices.
B. It fails to meet consumers’ demand for meat.
C. It has a negative impact on the environment.
D. It leads to overcrowded living conditions for animals.
14. What is a current goal for cultured meat companies
A. To improve the flavor of their products.
B To obtain further government approvals.
C. To increase their production capabilities.
D. To establish partnerships with restaurants.
15. What is the text mainly about
A. Cultured meat permitted for sale in the US.
B. The technological advancements in cultured meat.
C. The cultural impact of cultured meat on dietary habits.
D. The environmental influence of traditional meat production.

Noise is more than just an annoyance; it has serious consequences for our health and wellbeing. ____16____ Loud sounds can damage the auditory nerve, leading to hearing loss. The risk is related to volume, pitch and duration. ____17____ About 1/8 of kids and teens have permanent hearing damage. Research indicates that kids should avoid sounds over 75 decibels (分贝), emphasizing the need to be careful about noise exposure from a young age.
The brain’s role in processing sound is also crucial. New research looks into how it interprets what we hear and why some sounds are unpleasant. ____18____ People’s perception (感知) of a sound can depend on what they think. Misophonia, where certain sounds cause great pain, may be connected to the brain’s interpretation of sounds. Understanding these psychological aspects is beneficial to handling noise-related problems.
____19____ It can even affect a person’s ability to learn and perform academically. Studies show noisy classrooms can make it harder for kids to focus, read, remember, and do well on tests. It can also result in “noisier brains”, making it difficult to concentrate even in quiet settings. However, activities like team sports might help reduce this background noise as they train the brain to focus on relevant sounds.
The stress caused by noise extends beyond the brain. ____20____ It can cause anxiety, depression, headaches, heart disease, and digestive problems. Furthermore, nighttime traffic noise may be associated with cardiovascular (心血管的) issues and poor sleep. The continuous stress from noise disturbs the body’s normal functioning.
To protect hearing, using earplugs is essential for protecting the delicate inner ear structures, especially in noisy environments.
A. The effects of noise on our ears are well-known.
B. Noise affects not only our ears but also our brains.
C. In learning environments, noise can cause problems.
D. Noise can have a negative impact on our mental health.
E. It shows noise can have a great effect on our overall health.
F. One way to protect our ears is to limit our exposure to loud noises.
G. This damage can have a long-term impact on a person’s hearing ability.

Lily watched black clouds roll across the sky while she was standing at the door of their small house. “This has been an awful vacation,” she said to Ella, her younger sister. “We have been stuck in this house all week long because of this rain. Then I wanted to go into town today with Mom and Dad, but you got sick.”
“I couldn’t help it." Ella cried.
Lily didn’t listen to her. “My friend Mila is lucky. She’s the only child in the family. She never has to miss out on things because of a little sister,” she complained.
She turned on the radio with an angry click. “Word is just in,” a man reported. “There is a chance of a flash flood in Hidden Valley. The water in Lake Taupo has already reached the top of the dam. The dam could give way at any time. People in Hidden Valley are in danger. They should move to high ground right away.”
“Should we leave right now ” Ella asked eagerly.
“No, Mom and Dad will come back home soon. I don’t want to leave until they get back,” Lily responded.
Lily was upset. Every past year she loved their vacations in Hidden Valley. But this year the rain ruined everything. The sky grew darker and darker. Heavy rain beat against the windows, and thunder shook the house. “Lily, I’m scared,” Ella whispered. “What if the dam breaks ”
“It won’t,” Lily said firmly. She hoped Ella believed her. Lily didn’t want Ella to know how scared she was too.
The radio stopped in the middle of a song. A man came on the air talking loud and fast. “The Lake Taupo Dam has broken. Everyone in Hidden Valley must move to high ground NOW!”
Lily’s heart raced. “Let’s get out of here!” she yelled. She took Ella’s arm and pulled her outside. They could hear a terrible roar (咆哮声) coming from the far end of the valley. Lily and Ella rushed up the muddy road behind their house. The thundering roar grew louder. Lily looked back. The wall of water was coming faster. It seemed to be swallowing all of the Hidden Valley. In another minute it would hit them.

【47题答案】
【答案】
Lily saw a big tree not far from them. The big tree seemed strong enough to stand up against the force of water. An idea flashed across her mind. She and Ella were both good at climbing trees. “Hurry up, Ella! Climb up that tree!” Lily ordered. She pushed Ella up the tree and then she followed. They were halfway up the tree when the water hit. They held on as tightly as they could. They watched the floodwater crash into their house. They held onto the trunk, their bodies pressed against the rough bark, as the floodwater rushed around them.
The floodwater started to go don en after a while. Lily and Ella climbed down from the tree. It was then that Lily felt cold and hungry. She almost cried when she saw what the flood had done. The once beautiful valley was now full of ugly mud. “I’m glad we made it,” Ella said, giving her sister a tight hug and then smiling. “Just think, Lily, you had a chance to be an only child and you blew it!” Lily looked into Ella’s eyes and said, “But what I really want is to have you with me up in that tree!”
