They talk about the straw that broke the camel’s back, but for me really it should be the password that wiped out my memory bank.
I was going along fine with instant recall of my bank PIN, my mobile phone number and the date of my cousin’s birthday before I downloaded a gas station payment app for its new customer discount. It asked me to create a password. When I typed in “gas 1”, it was rejected for not being complex enough. I tried again: “I Hate Hearless Oil Companies@”. But that was too long and didn’t include “at least one number”. But here is the thing: as soon as I added the fresh password into my memory, I instantly forgot all the others. My brain had hit its limit for passwords. I now know nothing!
I had entered some passwords in a notebook. Of course, I didn’t write down the actual passwords, in case it fell into the wrong hands. Instead, I masked them in a way that only a family member could figure them out. For example, I combined my bank PIN with our postal code, then added it to a list of phone numbers. It would fool even Albert Einstein.
Maybe we need a system like the one we use to remember people’s names. You know, you form an association between a person’s characteristics and their name by whispering “Skinny George. Skinny George” in heart after meeting them. The risk is that, upon seeing him, you’ll burst out the phrase. “Skinny George” might not mind, but it’s possible “Boring Betty” will. As for remembering passwords as you change them, you could simply use the first and last letters of your favorite singer’s greatest hits, together with the year of their release.
Maybe I’ll try that one out, but only after describing the system in the notebook. Then I’ll hide it in such a secret place that even I won’t be able to find it later!
4. What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs
A He fell for a marketing trick. B. He was annoyed by passwords.
C. He had a serious memory disorder. D. He was rejected by the gas station.
5. By mentioning Albert Einstein in paragraph 3, what does the author mean to do
A. To fool the intelligent scientist. B. To advocate a password system.
C. To show the safety of his passwords. D. To prove the uselessness of his passwords.
6. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To assess a password-remembering method. B. To encourage readers to use password notebooks.
C. To highlight the importance of complex passwords. D. To complain about the trouble caused by passwords.
7. How does the author sound in this passage
A. Humorous. B. Indifferent. C. Serious. D. Absurd.

Ariel Procaccia has thought a lot about how to cut a cake over the last 15 years. As the father of three children, he knows how hard it is to divide a birthday cake to everyone’s satisfaction. But it’s also because Procaccia’s work focuses on exploring the mathematical rules for dividing stuff up fairly.
For decades, researchers have been asking the seemingly simple question of how to cut a cake fairly. The answer reaches far beyond birthday parties. At its core, it’s a mathematical problem that reflects broader issues of fairness, and so draws interest from mathematicians, economists, and social scientists alike.
The simplest approach is called the “divider-chooser” method, where one person cuts the cake into two equal pieces in his view, and the other person picks first. Each receives a piece that they feel is as valuable as the other’s. But when personal preferences are taken into account, even the easiest rule becomes complicated. For example, Alice and Bob are to divide a cake, and Alice knows Bob prefers chocolate. She may knowingly divide the cake unequally so the smaller piece contains more chocolate. Then Bob will choose according to his preference, and Alice will get the larger piece. Both of them are satisfied with what they get, but the meaning of fairness changes in this situation.
The cake is a symbol for any divisible good. When cake-cutting principles are employed to settle disagreements, they are potentially helping the world find solutions. Procaccia has used fair division algorithms (算法) to model food distribution. Social scientist Haris Aziz is exploring situations ranging from how to divide up daily tasks to how to best schedule doctors’ shifts in hospitals.
Even after decades of investigation, cake-cutting isn’t like a simple jigsaw puzzle with a well-defined solution. Instead, over time, it has evolved into a kind of mathematical sandbox, a constructive playground that brings together abstract proofs and easy applications. The more researchers explore it, the more there is to explore.
8. Why is Procaccia interested in cake-cutting
A. Family duty and work focus. B. Cake art and professional quality.
C. Hobby drive and skill improvement. D. Status pursuit and economic benefits.
9. What can we learn about fairness from the example in paragraph 3
A. Its standard is stable. B. It prevents unequal division.
C. Its concept is complex. D. It dominates personal preferences.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about concerning cake-cutting
A. The problems it produces. B. The details of its process.
C. The application of its rules. D. The harmony it symbolizes.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Cutting Cakes and Making Friends B. The Math Behind Fair Cake-cutting
C. Why Kids Always Argue Over Cakes D. A Sweet Way to Solve Math Problems
D
People pursuing perfection and those valuing being on time often don’t see eye to eye in the workplace. But according to a recent study, it is better to deliver a good-enough project on schedule rather than perfecting it through procrastination.
Researchers surveyed thousands of people in the U.S. and U.K, including managers and others whose jobs included evaluating others. They presented participants with the same examples of work, and then asked them to rate it. But first, they mentioned whether it was either submitted early, right at the deadline or late.
Respondents who were told it was late consistently rated the work as worse in quality than those who were told the same work was early or on time. The study also found there wasn’t much benefit to submitting work early since evaluators tended to rank work submitted before and at the deadline as the same quality. Furthermore, it didn’t matter how late the work was submitted, with one day or one week delays viewed just as negatively and that remained the case if the employee gave their manager advance warning.
A field experiment was conducted in a high school in China that had students grade pieces of art in a staged contest. The art was on a piece of paper that also included the date it was submitted. Even though the kids were told to ignore all other details on the paper other than the art itself, the works submitted after the deadline received lower grades. That study made the broader point that it didn’t really matter who set the deadline. In the eyes of the evaluator, any miss was a meaningful miss.
However, the reason behind the missed deadline mattered, researchers found. If it was due to forces beyond an employee’s control, evaluators didn’t end up with as negative a view of the work as they did when the reason was one within their control. “If the reason why you missed the deadline was beyond your control, you as the employee should let your manager know,” Maglio says. “That seems to be one of the few situations in which people cut you a break.”
12. What does the underlined word “procrastination” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Delay. B. Editing. C. Teamwork. D. Reviewing.
13. What can be concluded from the research result
A. Minimal delays get better evaluations. B. Preannounced delays get positive feedback.
C. Late submissions are more negatively judged. D. Submitting work early means a lot in evaluations.
14. What does the author want to show by mentioning the field experiment in China
A. Kids judge submissions more objectively. B. The art itself rather than other details counts.
C. A peer-to-peer evaluation can be informative. D. The finding holds true across age and culture.
15. What can be implied from the last paragraph
A. Employees get unfair reviews. B. A set deadline is absolutely unchangeable.
C. Bosses should care about employees. D. Employees should report unavoidable misses.

Jason had a reputation as the messiest kid at Greenwood High School. His room was like a junkyard, with clothes tossed everywhere, empty chip bags on the floor, and half-finished sodas scattered across his desk. His mom, Susan, had stopped nagging (唠叨) him to clean up, hoping he himself would eventually get the hint. But instead, the mess just got worse.
Greenwood High School was famous for its creative projects, so when the headmaster Mr. Thompson declared a new “Labor Education” project, no one was too surprised. The idea was simple: teach students about hard work through real tasks. Jason wasn’t excited—he would rather play video games all day—but the project was a must; he had no choice.
Finally, the day of the project came. It was gray and overcast, matching Jason’s mood as he dragged himself into the school’s lecture hall with his classmates, yawning and complaining. Mr. Thompson stood on stage with a speaker. “Today, we’re going to learn the importance of labor!” he exclaimed. Jason rolled his eyes when he was assigned to the gardening group with his best friend, Mike. Their job was to clear out the school’s overgrown front lawn and plant new flowers. They shared a look that said it all—this was going to be a long day.
As they started weeding, Jason quickly discovered how hard physical labor could be. The weeds were stubborn, and the leaves seemed to multiply every time he raked (耙) them. His back ached, his arms felt like jelly, and his hands blistered. While stretching, eager to sneak in a break, he spotted Mr. Thompson standing afar with a big smile from across the yard, giving him a big thumbs-up.
After lunch, the group moved to build simple things like birdhouses for the garden in the school’s maintenance house. Jason had two left hands at first—his hammering was a mess— but he slowly got better. By the end of the session, he managed to make a crooked but decent-looking birdhouse. Carrying his newly-made birdhouse around, Jason proudly showed it off to his classmates.

【答案】Standardize Students’ Chinese Character Writing
Nowadays, many students tend to write Chinese characters sloppily and irregularly. Some even ignore the basic stroke orders, making their writing hard to recognize.
