Going Deep to Deliver Kindness
Although Enzo held several free-diving records — his deepest dive without the aid of breathing equipment was 101 meters — it was the lives of sea creatures that concerned him most. Enzo devoted his life to educating the world about the link between healthy seas and healthy humans. He often quoted Vangelis: “Until a man learns to respect and speak to the animal world, he can never know his true role on Earth.”
While diving in the Mediterranean with his daughters Rossana and Patrizia, Enzo was in the water preparing to dive. He felt a slight push on his back and turned to see a male dolphin waving to him. The dolphin dove, and Enzo followed.
About 12 meters down, Enzo was led to the dolphin’s mate, who had got entangled in a fishing net and would soon drown. Enzo quickly surfaced and returned with his daughters and a couple of diving knives. They freed the dolphin and helped her to the surface. He recalls: “As soon as she was on the surface, after breathing out foam (泡沫) and blood, she gave birth to a baby dolphin under the watchful eyes of her mate.”
Enzo and his daughters were amazed at the miracle they had just witnessed. While they were still in the water, the male dolphin circled around and touched its beak to Enzo’s cheek, like a kiss of gratitude.
The world is full of opportunities that lead to miracles if we only follow those “pushes”. Next door is a neighbor who needs a smile and a conversation, a child who needs a little reassurance, or a young mom who just witnessed her own miracle and would love to share it with you. Or perhaps even one of our wild siblings, ready to share its world.
4. What can we know about Enzo from Paragraph 1
A. He dives to keep healthy. B. He makes a living by diving.
C. He knows animal languages. D. He is a protector of sea animals.
5. Why did the dolphin push Enzo on the back
A. To play with him. B. To help him dive.
C. To ask him for a favor. D. To keep him away from its mate.
6. What is the probable meaning of the underlined word “entangled” in Paragraph 3
A. Caught. B. Arrested. C. Involved. D. Absorbed.
7. What might be the author’s suggestion
A. Think big and start small.
B. Always be ready to do good.
C. When someone pushes you, follow him.
D. Help others without expecting anything in return.
C
Have you ever noticed how some people seem to handle difficulties calmly while others let small problems ruin their entire day This difference often comes down to how we respond to challenges. American social psychologist Leon Festinger proposed a famous theory later known as “Festinger’s Law”, which states that10 percent of life’s events are beyond your control, but 90 percent is within your control.
To explain this, let’s examine two events. First, imagine a business professional who has an important presentation. On the way to work, they spill coffee on his shirt. If he reacts with frustration, rushes angrily, and arrives hurriedly, his presentation may suffer due to his distracted state. Now, consider an alternative response: he calmly cleans up, changes clothes, and uses the extra time in transit to review his notes. The initial problem is the same, but the outcomes differ dramatically because of his reactions.
The influences of Festinger’s Law extend beyond individual situations to interpersonal relationships as well. In family conflicts, for instance, an unpleasant response to a minor disagreement can increase tensions, while a patient, understanding approach often leads to resolution. Similarly, in team projects, how members respond to setbacks — whether with blame or constructive problem-solving — can determine the group’s ultimate success.
What makes this principle particularly valuable is its universal applicability. Whether dealing with academic pressures, workplace (challenges, or personal relationships, the common thread is that our reactions often matter more than the problems themselves. By cultivating self-awareness and emotional 1regulation, we can significantly improve our ability to navigate life’s unavoidable difficulties.
Developing this skill requires practice. It involves pausing before reacting, assessing situations objectively, and consciously choosing productive responses. Over time, this approach becomes habitual, leading to better outcomes and reduced stress. Festinger’s Law ultimately teaches us while we can’t control everything that happens to us, we can always control how we respond — and that makes all the difference.
8. Why does the author pose a question at the beginning
A. To emphasize the Law’s difficulties.
B. To rate readers’ psychology knowledge.
C. To create a personal connection to the topic.
D. To introduce Dr. Festinger’s life experiences.
9. What is the main lesson from the coffee spill example
A. Spare clothes should always be ready.
B. Your reaction matters more than the problem.
C. Business people face many challenges.
D. Small problems can ruin your whole day.
10. What is the significant value of Festinger’s Law
A. It helps people better address life’s challenges.
B. It provides useful guidance for different life situations.
C. It encourages us to focus on the things we can’t control.
D. It suggests most problems are less serious than they seem.
11. What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A. The methods to practice Festinger’s Law.
B. The occasions to control personal feelings.
C. The benefits of reducing stress.
D. The impact of immediate reactions.
D
Leopards and hyenas (鬣狗) are competitors when it comes to finding food in East Africa. Usually leopards have the advantage, but a new study found that people living nearby can tip the balance toward hyenas. It seems that hyenas are far better at adapting to the presence of people.
Researchers from the University of Copenhagen, in Denmark, studied the behavior of spotted hyenas and leopards living in Udzungwa Mountains National Park, a protected area of about 770 square miles in Tanzania. The team used camera traps, which take pictures when they sense movement, to observe the relationship between the two mammal species.
Udzungwa Mountains National Park is surrounded by farmland and human homes. People living in the area don’t like leopards because they hunt farm animals and can attack humans. For this reason, some farmers attack leopards, which has caused the animals to stay as far from people as possible.
By contrast hyenas only eat farm animals that are sick or dead, so they are less of a problem for humans. The result is that hyenas are now dominating areas near towns and villages, where most local prey (猎物) animals also live. Greater access to prey has led to a shift in the balance of power between the two species. Hyenas “may even exploit (利用) humans as protectors against the leopards,” said lead study author Rasmus W. Havmoller.
Male leopards are bigger and stronger than hyenas, but female leopards are smaller. This means fights with hyenas are riskier for female leopards. To avoid fighting with hyenas over prey, the female leopards have become active during the day because hyenas are mainly active at night.
Overall, the presence of humans seems to be having a negative impact on the leopards, whereas the hyenas seem to be more and more. Havm ller said he hopes this study will encourage people to consider how they may affect wildlife in areas shared by multiple species. In the future, he said, changes in wilderness areas should be made slowly in order to give animals a chance to adapt.
12. What caused the balance change according to Paragraph 1
A. Expansion of farmland areas. B. Human activities near the park.
C. Increased hunt by local people. D. Natural changes in prey populations.
13. What does Rasmus W. Havm ller’s statement mean in Paragraph 4
A. Hyenas use human presence to gain safety from leopards.
B. Farmers should protect leopards from hyenas’ attacks.
C. Leopards are smarter than hyenas in finding food.
D. Human activities equally harm both species.
14. Why are the female leopards more active in the daytime
A. Because they are much stronger and larger in size.
B. Because male leopards’ population is smaller.
C. To catch more hyenas as the preys.
D. To avoid encountering the hyenas.
15. Which is probably the best title
A. Humans Help Hyenas Hunt B. Night Hunters of Africa
C. Camera Traps Reveal Animal Secrets D. How Humans Shift Wildlife Balance

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
From high up in his skinny apartment building, Pieter could see the canal stretching in both directions. Every Saturday, Pieter watched for Grandpa riding toward the building on his bicycle. But today, Pieter knew that his grandfather wouldn’t come. Pieter would not hear the ring-ring of Grandpa’s bicycle bell. And there would be no Saturday afternoon picnic in the park.
Last week, Grandpa had leg surgery. Now he needed a walking stick to help him walk—and Pieter didn’t know if Grandpa would ever ride his bike again. Pieter sighed. Amsterdam looked beautiful today, but Pieter missed his grandfather. Would he ever again hear the ringring as Grandpa approached
That’s when Pieter had an idea. He grabbed his birthday money — 10 euros from the top dresser drawer. Then he hurried to tell Mam his plan. A few minutes later, Pieter ran down the stairs of his building and run into the afternoon sunshine. His bike was waiting for him. Pieter jumped on his bike and pedaled (骑) down the rough road.
Ring-ring sang his bicycle bell to warn walkers that he was coming. He pedaled past the corner hardware store. He pedaled past the window washer who whistled as he worked. And he pedaled over a bridge. “Hello,” he called to a girl fishing in the canal. “Hello,” he called to a baby in his baby car.
Pieter pedaled two more blocks and then arrived at the market. He loved the market’s sights and smells. Buckets were filled with bright flowers. Tables were piled with rounds of cheese. Colorful vegetables were piled high — red tomatoes, orange carrots, green lettuce, purple potatoes, and yellow peppers. And Pieter’s favorite — baskets overflowed with freshly baked breads, rolls, and biscuits. He breathed in the smell, and his mouth watered.
Pieter’s euros clinked in his pocket as he walked through the market, examining each table. He stopped at a fruit stand and chose two shiny apples. He handed the farmer one euro.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“I’ll get all the things for a picnic,” he said to himself.

Last Saturday, the Student Union organized a hiking activity for Senior 3 students themed “Footprints of Youth.” It was a memorable journey from the school gate to a nearby scenic spot.
We set off at 7:00 a. m. The first part was through a forest path, where we enjoyed fresh air and beautiful scenery. After a break, we continued on a more challenging track. Students helped each other, especially those who were tired. Finally, we reached the destination and had a discussion while having a picnic together.
It was this hike that strengthened our physical fitness and deepened our friendship. It was a great way to relieve stress before exams, leaving us more energetic and ready for the challenges ahead.

【答案】“I’ll get all the things for a picnic,” he said to himself. Pieter then stopped at the cheese table and asked for half a pound of cheese. “Thank you,” he said to the cheese-maker, handing him three euros. Finally, he stopped in front of the bread baskets and chose a loaf of bread. “Thank you,” he said to the baker, handing him two euros. He pedaled straight back to the corner hardware store and bough a bicycle bell with the remaining four euros and then headed for Grandfather’s apartment.
Grand father smiled knowingly when he saw all the things, especially the bicycle bell. His grandfather gave Pieter a big hug. He missed his sweet grandson, too. He pointed to the back garden with his walking stick. Pieter understood at once. He took his bags to the garden lawn at once and had his grandfather coming out of the house ringing the bell. Ha-ha, as usual, Pieter heard the familiar bicycle bell and then enjoyed a picnic with Grandfather. At this moment, Pieter felt how good life was.
