Ice cream has held a unique role in our world's history and culture —— but where did it come from
The first accounts of cold desserts and iced drinks date back to as early as the first century. In civilizations including ancient Rome, Mughal India, and Tang dynasty China, these icy treats were mainly enjoyed by the royal families. And finding the means to freeze these desserts wasn't always easy. Wealthy Mediterranean nobility (地中海贵族) sent laborers to climb up high mountains to harvest glacial ice and snow.
Yet the cream-based treat we know today made a much later first showing. It was originally inspired by sherbet (果汁冰糕), or sharbat in Arabic, an icy drink believed to have originated in Persia(波斯), and later gained popularity in the Middle Ages. European travelers brought sharbat recipes home, and began creating their own chocolate, nut, and even eggplant flavored taste on the refreshment. In 1692, Antonio Latini, an Italian chef, recorded a recipe for a unique milk-based version, which some historians call the first ice cream.
In the 18th century, ice cream expanded its reach as these recipes set sail alongside European settlers to North America. Yet it was still mainly enjoyed by the upper classes as the process to make it was quite laborious, and its main ingredients (原料) —— sugar, salt and cream —— were expensive. In Philadelphia in 1843, Nancy Johnson patented a revolutionary ice cream-making machine, which made the process easier for any home cook. And storing ice cream was no longer hard, as by the mid-1830s, New England businessman"Ice King" Frederic Tudor had greatly improved the ice trade, shipping thousands of tons of ice to households across the globe. Soon, ice cream was on every street corner.
Today, ice cream continues to take on new forms. And while some of its mysteries may never be solved, one thing is certain: our love for ice cream will never lessen.
24.Why does the author mention the royal families in paragraph 2
A.To arouse readers' interest in ancient royal life.
B.To show that royal families were very rich.
C.To describe the earliest stage of ice cream.
D.To prove that early ice desserts were uncommon.
25.Where was the first ice cream born according to some historians
A.In Arab. B.In Europe.
C.In Persia. D.In North America.
26.What breakthrough was made in the 1840s
A.The recipes set sail from Europe to North America.
B.The invention of a patented ice cream making machine.
C.The improvement in storing ice cream.
D.The expansion of the ice trade.
27.What is the passage mainly about
A.The process of making ice cream.

Overfunctioning behaviors, such as overworking, overachieving, overthinking, overexplaining, overgiving or overcommitting, are quite common in our life and work.
Why do we often engage in overfunctioning behaviors The reason is that we want to create psychological safety for ourselves. Overfunctioning behaviors are a form of nervous-system regulation. When you feel anxiety, stress, frustration or uncertainty about your life or job, the threat networks in your brain will be activated: You' re afraid. To restore balance, you engage in overfunctioning behaviors to stay"relevant" or"on top" so that you can alleviate your fear. The conventional wisdom is that"trying to be the best" is a form of resilience that makes us more productive.
However, recent researches suggest otherwise. A 2018 meta-analysis of 25,000 people, conducted by Dana Harari and his colleagues and published in the Journal of Applied Psychology, found no relationship between actual performance and the perfectionism typical of success. Take overthinking for example: If overthinking worked, it would allow us to solve more problems in our lives. But the research shows the opposite is true. Overthinking is linked to poorer decision-making, greater interpersonal problems and more distress. In other words, constant efforts don't make you the best performer. A 2021 study by a team of Chinese researchers found that perfectionism was related to greater anxiety and depression. A 2023 study reported that overachievers had higher levels of dopamine (多巴胺), a neurotransmitter(神经递质) related to both motivation and addiction. The brain can create powerful cravings that perpetuate(使持久) our overfunctioning —— the more you overfunction, the more you want to overfunction. Constant overfunctioning does greatharm to our mental and physical health.
To break the trap of overfunctioning, it's vital to see that they are just forms of safety-seeking. We need to recognize that the most powerful determiner of our own safety is no one but ourselves. When our brains drive us to overdo something next time, just allow yourself not to be perfect and relax for a while.
28.What's the main reason for people to overfunction according to the text
A.To show off their abilities.
B.To gain more recognition from others.

29.What does the underline word"alleviate" in paragraph 2 mean
A.Ease. B.Return. C.Reproduce. D.Enhance.
30.What can we learn from paragraph 3
A.Working hard to be the best always leads to high productivity.
B.There is a positive relationship between perfectionism and performance.
C.People with perfectionism are more likely to succeed in their careers.
D.Struggling for perfection frequently doesn't bring the best results.
31.What is the best title for the text
A.Try to
B.Care about Your Health
C.Break the Trap of Overfunctioning

Meta Platforms, formerly known as Facebook, is expected to preview its latest pair of tech-enabled glasses at its annual developer and hardware conference. Mark Zuckerberg, Meta Platforms' CEO, once announced virtual-reality headsets as the next big thing. It turns out people may want something simpler: sunglasses with a camera.
Meta' s Ray-Ban smart glasses are gaining popularity among consumers, who say they like using them to take photos for their friends and family as well as to create content for social media. The excitement comes when interest in the metaverse ( 虚 拟 世 界), an online world accessed via virtual-reality headsets, remains silent.
The second version of Meta' s smart glasses — which are equipped with a camera, microphones and artificial intelligence — went on sale in October 2023. Zuckerberg said demand has been higher than expected. Meta has shipped more than 700,000 pairs, according to data provider IDC. Shipments more than doubled from the first to second quarter this year.
Christopher S derberg, a consultant for online influencers who lives in Stockholm, bought the smart glasses in May. He said they helped him kick-start his own influencer career. He can film the videos himself smoothly and walk up to people in a way that is less disturbing or annoying while still letting them know he' s recording. To record with the glasses, Meta Ray-Ban users press a button to start a 30-second,60-second or three-minute video. S derberg said, "It's a game changer."
Meta is hoping people will come to enjoy the AI features. The company said it redesigned the second-generation glasses from the ground up, improving the audio and camera capabilities and also adding the AI tools.
Beyond Meta, other tech companies are also exploring tech-enabled glasses. But few of them have yet managed to occupy the market.

I was eight years old and unaware of all the arrangements being made for our journey as a family from Toowoomba to London in 1950. My mother had been told that she would never walk again without callipers(金属支架), and wished to visit specialists in London.
The day before we boarded the ship SS Orion, Father waved a tearful goodbye to his five-year-old red heeler (Australian cattle dog), Spider, who was loved by us all. Father' s friend Sandy had been getting to know Spider for many weeks, as Sandy was to be his guardian while we were overseas. We didn' t know how long my mother' s treatment would take or how long we would be away.
Six weeks later, a blue air letter arrived from Sandy, giving my father the news that Spider had run away just two weeks after we had sailed. I will always remember my father's face darkening and tears welling up as he read this news. My mother and I tried to comfort and relieve him, knowing in our hearts how useless this was. Our excitement at finally arriving in England quickly faded away.
Sandy had advertised constantly on ABC radio and other regional newspapers. Despite many"sightings", the dog was never found. It seemed Spider just kept running and searching for us. As he was a red heeler, almost yellow in colour, my father thought he would be shot or dingo-trapped, because of his appearance. But our family thought that Father held a secret hope that Spider was still alive.
We sailed back to Australia two years later. My father immediately began his own search for Spider. He received a large number of incoming calls by the people who had said they had seen his dog. Many false calls and sightings meant that a huge cloud of disappointment hung over our household. My mother was fed up with all this and impatient for my father to accept the fact. The dog was gone — possibly shot or dead from starvation and tiredness.

W: In 2022, I scored my dream job at a travel magazine based in Bangkok. I moved there with my husband, Leigh, from my hometown Brighton, a seaside city in the United Kingdom.
Our Brighton life had become routine and we wanted a change of scenery — an escape from office jobs, to eat our way through Asia and tell stories along the way. Through work, my"offices" ranged from mountain cottages in northern Vietnam to tents in the jungles of Laos or diverse local villages in China. Besides my day-to-day work, Leigh and I launched a travel blog called Strange Talk, where we published the stories that magazines were not interested in. Our blog led us to incredible adventures, but apart from our blog readers, we had no one else to talk about our colourful life in Bangkok with. It was difficult to make friends in Thailand. I had a few Thai friends from work who I would have lunch with at the local market, but it was hard to break the cultural barrier. Without speaking the same language as them, I could never be in their inner circle.
Leigh and I realized we were lonely. Even though we have each other, we need the benefits of a well-rounded friendship group. Therefore, we made the decision to pack our things and move back to Brighton.

One cold winter morning, my father had a call from an old lady 375 kilometers away. The old lady claimed she took some glimpses of a dingo-type yellow dog in the shadows at her court these days. She guessed he was the same dog as we had advertised in the newspaper. That was enough for father to interrupt everything at hand. Immediately we jumped into our car, driving for hours to her place. Upon arrival, we were led to her overgrown court. Sadly, we didn't see the"dingo dog".
My father didn't give up. He searched tirelessly through the bushes and weeds, calling out Spider. After hours of searching, father's heart leaped as he heard a faint bark. Following the sound, he tried making his special whistle for Spider. Before we could notice, the dog made a dash from nowhere with great force and certainty. He kept licking my father's face and wagged violently. Wrapping it in arms, my father burst into tears of relief. Spider spent the rest of his life with us, content and satisfied. We never left him anywhere alone again.

B.The ingredients of ice cream.
C.The history of ice cream.
D.The promotion of ice cream.

The first accounts of cold desserts and iced drinks date back to as early as the first century. In civilizations including ancient Rome, Mughal India, and Tang dynasty China, these icy treats were mainly enjoyed by the royal families. And finding the means to freeze these desserts wasn't always easy. Wealthy Mediterranean nobility (地中海贵族) sent laborers to climb up high mountains to harvest glacial ice and snow."
In 1692, Antonio Latini, an Italian chef, recorded a recipe for a unique milk-based version, which some historians call the first ice cream."1692年,意大利厨师Antonio Latini记录了一种独特的牛奶冰淇淋的配方,一些历史学家称之为第一个冰淇淋。

Ice cream has held a unique role in our world's history and culture—but where did it come from "冰淇淋在我们的世界历史和文化中扮演着独特的角色——但它从何而来呢?;结合全文内容可知,本文介绍讲述了冰淇淋的历史起源、发展以及在现代社会的普及和变化。故选C。

To restore balance, you engage in overfunctioning behaviors to stay ‘relevant' or ‘on top' so that you can alleviate your fear." 故选A。
A 2018 meta-analysis of 25, 000 people, conducted by Dana Harari and his colleagues and published in the Journal of Applied Psychology, found no relationship between actual performance and the perfectionism typical of success." Overthinking is linked to poorer decision-making, greater interpersonal problems and more distress. In other words, constant efforts don't make you the best performer." A 2023 study reported that overachievers had higher levels of dopamine (多巴胺) , a neurotransmitter (神经递质) related to both motivation and addiction. The brain can create powerful cravings that perpetuate (使持久) our overfunctioning — the more you overfunction, the more you want to overfunction. Constant overfunctioning does great harm to our mental and physical health."2023年的一项研究报告称,过度追求成就的人多巴胺水平更高,多巴胺是一种与动力和成瘾都有关系的神经递质。

32.What is the present situation of the metaverse according to the text
A.It is developing rapidly. B.It is losing its attraction.
C.It is being updated. D.It is reaching its peak.

One cold winter morning, my father had a call from an old lady 375 kilometers away.
……
My father didn't give up.
……
