Sense groups
Grammatically, a sentence is made up of several parts and each has its own meaning. These parts are called sense groups.

A sense group can be a _______, a ________ (noun phrase, verb phrase and prepositional phrase, etc.) or a ________. We often use the slash sign (/) to separate different sense groups in a sentence.

I pause before the word “after” because there is a clause after it.
I pause before the word “my” because there is a comma before it.
Why do you pause when you read each sentence
