William had worked hard to pass the exams to enter high school. When the term began, however, his father told him that there was no money to pay for his school fees because of the summer drought. Still, William wanted to learn.
He made the village library his school. One day, he found a book called Using Energy. On the book’s cover was a picture of windmills, tall steel towers with blades (叶片) spinning like giant fans. He learned that wind — something of which his hometown had plenty — could produce electricity.
He couldn’t help picturing his own windmill in mind, but collecting the parts and tools he needed would take months. In a junkyard, he dug through piles of used metal, old cars, and worn-out tractors, searching for anything that might help him construct his machine. He made four-foot-long blades from plastic pipe, which he melted over a fire, flattened out, and hardened with bamboo poles.
Earning some money, he paid a blacksmith to attach the piston (活塞) to the pedal sprocket (踏板链轮) of an old bicycle frame. This would be the axle (轮轴) of the windmill. When the wind blew, the spinning blades would turn the bicycle wheel and spin a small dynamo (发电机), donated by his friend.
When he had collected all the parts, William began putting them together. He fixed the blades to the tractor fan he found, using washers (垫圈) he’d made from bottle caps. Next he pushed the fan onto the piston joint to the bicycle frame. With the help of his two best friends, William built a 16-foot-tall tower from trunks of trees and lifted the ninety-pound windmill to the top.
The big moments eventually came. He climbed up the tower and connected two wires that held a small bulb. As the wind whipped around him, the blades began to turn, slowly at first, then faster and faster. The light bulb flickered (闪烁), then flashed to life. The crowd cheered from below. “Wachitabwina (well done)!”
William’s machine now powered his house. And the story of the boy who’d built a power-generating windmill to rescue his family from the drought spread across the Internet.
4. After reading Using Energy, what did William decide to do
A. Learn to survive a drought. B. Make use of wind.
C. Build a village library. D. Enter a high school.
5. According to Para.3, which of the following word can best describe William
A. Determined. B. Cooperative. C. Humorous. D. Optimistic.
6. What can you learn about William’s machine
A. It was built by villagers. B. It was made from metal materials.
C. It took him years to complete it. D. It worked at the first attempt.
7. What is the best title for the passage
A. Windmills for Villages B. Ideas Worth Spreading
C. Winds Of Hope D. Learning from Experience

From Marie Tussaud’s Chamber of Horrors to Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion (鬼屋) to horror-themed escape rooms, haunted house attractions have terrified and delighted audiences around the world for more than 200 years.
These attractions turn out to be good places to study fear. They help scientists understand the body’s response to fright and how we perceive some situations as enjoyably thrilling and others as truly terrible. One surprising finding: having friends close at hand in a haunted house might make you more jumpy, not less so.
Psychologist and study co-author Sarah Tashjian, who is now at the University of Melbourne, and her team conducted their research with 156 adults, who each wore a wireless wrist sensor during their visit. The sensor measured skin responses linked to the body’s reactions to stress and other situations. When the sensor picked up, for example, greater skin conductance — that is, the degree to which the skin can transmit an electric current — that was a sign that the body was more aroused and ready for fight or flight. In addition to this measure, people reported their expected fear (on a scale of 1 to 10) before entering the haunted house and their experienced fear (on the same scale) after completing the haunt.
The scientists found that people who reported greater fear also showed heightened skin responses. Being with friends, Tashjian and her colleagues further found, increased physiological arousal during the experience, which was linked to stronger feelings of fright. In fact, the fear response was actually weaker when people went through the house in the presence of strangers.
Other investigators have used haunted houses to understand how fear and enjoyment can coexist. In a 2020 study led by Marc Malmdorf Andersen, a member of the Recreational Fear Lab at Aarhus University in Denmark, scientists joined forces with Dystopia Haunted House. The Danish attraction includes such terrifying experiences as being chased by “Mr. Piggy”, a large, chain-saw-wielding man wearing a bloody butcher’s apron and pig mask. People between the ages of 12 and 57 were video recorded at peak moments during the attraction, wore heart-rate monitors throughout and reported on their experience. People’s fright was tied to large-scale heart-rate fluctuations; their enjoyment was linked to small-scale ones. The results suggest that fear and enjoyment can happen together when physiological arousal is balanced “just right”.
8. Studying haunted house attractions helps scientists to learn about ________.
A. the psychological effects of fear on individuals
B. the history of horror-themed entertainment
C. the body’s response to material rewards
D. the impact of technology on people’s enjoyment
9. How did Sarah Tashjian and her team conduct their research on haunted house experiences
A. By surveying participants. B. By analyzing historical records.
C. By employing wireless wrist sensors. D. By using virtual reality simulations.
10. What did Tashjian and her colleagues discover in their study
A. Being with friends elevated level of physiological arousal.
B. The fear reaction was stronger in the company of strangers.
C. Psychological effect was unrelated to intensified feelings of fright.
D. Those reporting lightened fear showed increased skin responses.
11. It can be concluded from the 2020 study led by Marc Malmdorf Andersen that ________.
A. fear and enjoyment can not happen at the same time
B. large-scale heart-rate fluctuations were linked to enjoyment
C. the age of the participants was not related to the study’s findings
D. fear and enjoyment can coexist under certain conditions
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. A 11. D

The progress of a human being through life might be thought of as mostly gradual changes from the cell to the grave. But if you wake up one morning, look in the mirror, and wonder when you suddenly grew so much older, you may not be imagining things. According to a recent research into the molecular (分子) changes associated with aging, humans experience two sharp lurches forward, one at the average age of 44 and the other at the average age of 60. “We’re not just changing gradually over time; there are some really dramatic changes,” geneticist Michael Snyder of Stanford University explained.
Aging is complex, and associated with growing risks of diseases of all kinds. Snyder and his colleagues have been investigating the biology of aging to better understand what changes occur and how, in order to better ease and treat these diseases. To this end, they have been tracking a group of 108 adults, with ages spanning from 25 to 70, who have been donating biological samples every few months over several years. They noticed that in some conditions, such as Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular disease, risk doesn’t rise gradually with time; it increases sharply after a certain age.
To see if they could identify related changes, the researchers decided to take a closer look at the biomarkers of aging. Each participant submitted an average of 47 samples over 626 days, with the longest-serving participant submitting 367 samples. This wealth of data resulted in more than 246 billion data points, which the researchers then processed, looking for patterns in the changes. Snyder and his colleagues noticed that around 81 percent of all the molecules they studied showed changes at two distinct stages. Changes peaked in the mid-40s, and again in the early 60s, with slight differences.
Despite their findings, the researchers note that their sample size is pretty small, and they tested limited biological samples. Future research could help dig further into this phenomenon, studying it in more detail, across a wider range of subjects, to better understand how the human body changes over time.
12. What does the underlined word “lurches” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Rises. B. Advances. C. Conditions. D. Changes.
13. What is the aim of Michael Snyder’s research team
A. To slow the aging process. B. To extend human lifespan.
C. To promote disease treatment. D. To reduce disease risks.
14. What can we learn about the participants
A. They experienced identical changes at two age stages.
B. Their risk of contracting certain diseases rose with time.
C. They donated biological samples monthly over the years.
D. Their long-term involvement contributed to the abundance of data.
15. What is author’s suggestion for future research
A. Expand the sample size. B. Lengthen the research period.
C. Increase the number of researchers. D. Improve the data processing efficiency.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. A

【答案】Dear Editor,
I’m Li Hua. I’m writing to share my views on the issue of students making teachers’ photos into memes and spreading them on social media.
In my opinion, this behavior is inappropriate. It shows a lack of respect for teachers. Teachers deserve our respect and should not be treated in such a way.
I suggest that the school should educate students on respecting teachers and set clear rules against this behavior. Meanwhile, students should be encouraged to express their love and gratitude to teachers in proper ways.
Thanks for your attention.
Li Hua

“We’ve got this,” my friend Alex laughed loudly as we stepped off the library steps. “Absolutely, we’ve got this,” I agreed, performing a little victory dance on the sidewalk once the library door had closed behind us. We had both been nominated (提名) for the Youth Excellence Program, an honor and a chance almost every student was crazy about.
That weekend, Alex and I sat in my living room, carefully completing the program application. We each aimed to show we had all qualities the program valued: academic excellence, leadership, community service, integrity, and civic responsibility. I detailed my devotion to challenging courses, while Alex described his volunteer work at the local food bank. We left no stone unturned, fully confident in our joint success.
The following day, we submitted our applications to the teacher hopefully.
Weeks passed.
Then one day, I received a letter about the project. I rushed out of the classroom and opened it. I felt a stab of sadness right in my heart: my name was not on the list.
At that very moment, I saw Alex came jogging over, waving his letter with a beaming smile. It was clear he had news that contrasted with my own. Without hesitation, I turned away to avoid him. I knew he was eager to share his joy. Perhaps, he even had planned to celebrate the good news together with me.
But I just couldn’t face it: they picked him but refused me. How could fate be so unjust Anger and despair just blinded me.
That afternoon, on the school bus, I sat alone and avoided eye contact with Alex. When the bus arrived at my street, I just jumped off, without saying goodbye or smiling to him. I hurried home, thrusting (塞) the letter into my mom’s hands. I buried my face in the cushions, sobbing uncontrollably as waves of heartache swept over me.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
From that day on, I didn’t talk to Alex.

【答案】范文
From that day on, I didn’t talk to Alex. Each day at school, I navigated the hallways with a new route, avoiding the places he frequented. The shared excitement that once connected us was replaced by a painful silence. Alex tried to do something to mend it. One day, he even left me a note, trying to comfort me. But I looked at him coldly, “Leave me alone.” I knew I was hurting him, but the sting of rejection was too fresh, and I couldn’t find the words to bridge the gap.
Finally, Mom talked with me, saying Alex wasn’t the one to blame. She reminded me that success and failure were parts of life’s journey. “You should have congratulated your friend on this instead of feeling pitiful for yourself,” she said seriously. It suddenly struck me that how unfairly I treated Alex. Seized by guilt, I followed mom’s advice and left Alex a note, expressing my feelings—not as an apology, but as a step towards healing and rebuilding our bond. It was time to face my fears and embrace the reality that our friendship could weather this storm.2024-2025学年度高三级考前热身考试英语科试题

Then one day I received a letter about the project.
