Text 10
M: Hello! My name is Harry Menzies. I ordered a pool table online from your shop last Tuesday and it arrived only three days later. I was amazed and very happy at the speed of service, although the outer packing was a little damaged. Then, unfortunately, the problems started.
I had to put together the pool table and this was quite difficult. The first major complaint I have is that the instruction booklet included was written only in Spanish and Polish. I don’t think this is very helpful for me. I can’t believe you wouldn’t include the instructions in English. Anyway, I managed to follow the diagrams and get the pool table put together in about two hours.
Once I had put it together, I noticed the white ball wasn’t there. How am I supposed to be able to play any games without the white ball It’s obvious that the table was faulty.
The roll of the balls was not very true — they kept curving to the left or the right so I think there’s a problem with the table. So I don’t want to spend $800 for a pool table that can’t be used!
My customer number is 45993. The order number was GH12388. You can get in touch with me on my home phone number: 348-28841. Please get in touch with me as soon as possible to let me know how we can resolve these problems. I really hope to hear from you as soon as possible.

Paragraph 1:
I finally got up the courage to go down there. I saw Mom looking at the purse filled with receipts in silence. I was about to say sorry to her when she interrupted me to say, “I’m sorry I embarrassed you that day. Now I have a new purse; I will not upset you like that again.” I suddenly felt so ashamed that I couldn’t even say the word “sorry”. Mom took out a new purse and started moving things from the purse to it. Noticing her sadness, I finally gathered up my courage.
Paragraph 2:
“I’m really sorry,” I said, helping to put things into the new purse. “I shouldn’t have shouted at you, Mom.” While putting the receipts into the new purse, I saw that each of these little papers brought back a particular memory, filled with happiness and worth cherishing. It suddenly dawned on me why Mom valued them so much. I gave her a bear hug after finishing the work. And by the way, I started collecting receipts myself from then on and reading them now and then with Mom has become my favorite pastime.新梦想复读学校考前预测卷A

Three More Ways to Connect with Sumba Nature
Seek serenity in the surf
About three miles west of Occy’s Left, Pantai Beach lures surfers with its long right-hander, with more breaks to be found further north up the coast. Bring your own board or rent from Sumba Surf School at Pantai Beach. Surf conditions are ideal March to November though beginners may prefer the calmer waves from December to February. Advanced surfers occasionally brave the swell at Pantai Beach year-round, but equipment rentals are limited outside peak season.
Go chasing waterfalls
About two hours’ drive northwest of Waingapu, the largest town in eastern Sumba is Air Terjun Tanggedu — arguably Sumba’s finest waterfall, with terraces feeding into cyan pools you can paddle in. Locals also recommend the smaller but picturesque Waimarang Waterfall near Waingapu for a quicker visit. Closer to Nihi (roughly a 90-minute drive), is the lovely Lapopu Waterfall, a 10-minute walk from the access road. While Lapopu is easier to reach, its single cascade is less dramatic than Tanggedu’s multi-tiered falls. Rent a car or book a trip with a local tour operator such as Explore Sumba.
Hike it out
A network of rugged walking trails lacing Sumba weaves along rocky cliffs, through forests filled with endemic plants, and into traditional hilltop villages. Some trails are marked with faded signs, but these can be misleading after rainy seasons. To ensure you don’t get lost, it’s best to hire a guide. While GPS maps exist, spotty signal and overgrown paths make them unreliable.
21. When do beginners prefer to surf at Pantai Beach
A. January to May. B. March to November.
C. All year round. D. December to February.
22. Which waterfall is described as "arguably Sumba’s finest"
A. Lapopu Waterfall. B. Waimarang Waterfall.
C. Air Terjun Tanggedu. D. Occy’s Left.
23. According to the article, why is hiring a guide recommended for hiking in Sumba
A. Because you may get lost. B. Because trails are unmarked.
C. Because guides provide free equipment. D. Because GPS maps are entirely unavailable.

Artist Tom Campbell has exhibited his work at Outlaw Studios at Marina Commercial Park. The exhibition is Tom’s largest one to date and includes affordable art. The interactive show is made up of drawings, paintings, sculptures and live performances. Throughout the exhibition, Tom is working, giving the public an opportunity to watch inside his studio and have their portraits drawn. People can also commission(委托)a piece of their choosing.
Wall painting is part of Tom’s output. He has created a wall painting for Electric Picnic, along with four other artists invited to take part in this commission. His wall painting has a special theme, portrayed by doves (鸽子). As well as his anti-war standpoint, he is doing something meaningful. Tom is a founding member of a tree planting project called Trees Please. The group has distributed 10,000 trees in about four years across Ireland.
Humour is also important for Tom in his art. He can treat heavy subjects with irony, often employing an aggressive combination of lively colors and animals with wistful expressions communicating the importance of respect, peace, understanding and love. He has done creative work for mental health charities.
Tom was born with a love for art. He enjoys playing musical instruments in public, like the violin. He gets lots of smiles from people. He also sings and has an online channel featuring his songs, which are very improvised (即兴的). All this creativity is a lifeline for him, who believes that art is a necessity rather than a luxury.
Art is something everybody can do. If creativity was embraced by people in an open way, it could transform society. Art can bring a lot of joy. Everyone is creative and enjoys creativity whether it’s music or visual art or whatever.
24. What do we know about Tom’s exhibition
A. It is targeted at the rich. B. It takes on a variety of forms.
C. It is the largest one throughout art history. D. It offers an opportunity to practise drawing.
25. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about Tom
A. His sense of humor and creativity. B. His effort to protect plants and animals.
C. His advice on painting and planting trees. D. His passion for peace and the environment.
26. What can we learn from Tom’s improvised songs
A. He has creative talent. B. Art is a luxury.
C. Art has no boundaries. D. He is popular in public.
27. In which column of a magazine can the text probably appear
A. Literature. B. Finance. C. Figure. D. Society.

Humans have long known that being in nature is good for the mind and body. From indigenous (本土的) adolescents completing the adult ceremony in the wild to modern East Asian cultures taking “forest baths”, many have looked to nature as a place for healing and personal growth. But the question still remains. How can nature make it
There is no doubt that being in nature reduces the physiological symptoms of stress in our bodies. What this means is that we are less likely to be anxious and fearful in nature, and therefore we can be more open to other people and creative patterns of thought. Also, nature often leads to awe, wonder and respect, all these emotions facilitating everything from physical to mental health. There is also some evidence that exposure to nature impacts the brain. Viewing natural beauty makes specific reward circuits in the brain associated with dopamine release, a chemical that gives us a sense of purpose, joy and energy to pursue our goals.
But, regrettably, people seem to be spending less time outdoors and less time in nature than before. It is also clear that, in the past 30 years, people’s levels of stress and sense of “busyness” have risen dramatically. These joint forces have led environmental writer Richard Louv to coin the term “Nature Deficit Disorder”—a form of suffering that comes from a sense of disconnection from nature and its powers.
Perhaps we should take note and try a course corrective. The 19th century philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote about nature, “There I feel that nothing can befall me in life—no disgrace, no calamity.” The science speaks to Emerson’s intuition. It’s time to realize that nature is more than just a material resource. It’s also a pathway to human health and happiness.
28. Why are “indigenous adolescents” and “modern East Asian cultures” mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To clarify a viewpoint. B. To answer the question below.
C. To present the natural scenery. D. To show the cultural differences.
29. What does the underlined word “facilitating” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Restricting. B. Exposing. C. Promoting. D. Covering.
30. What is the tone of the author in writing paragraph 3
A. Indifferent. B. Uneasy. C. Humorous. D. Proud.
31. What can be the best title for the text
A. Is It Time to Challenge Yourself in Nature B. Do You Know Nature Is a Material Resource
C. Why Do We Care about the Natural Environment D. What Can Happen When We Connect with Nature
D
Research led by ecologist Bart Hoekstra of the University of Amsterdam shows that birds are affected by the mass use of fireworks on New Year’s Eve up to a distance of 10 km (6 miles) away.
With data from weather radars and bird counts an international team of researchers revealed how many birds take off immediately after the start of the fireworks, at what distance from fireworks this occurs and which species groups mainly react. “Birds take off as a result of an acute flight response due to sudden noise and light. We already knew that many water birds react strongly, but now we also see the effect on other birds throughout the Netherlands, ”says ecologist Bart Hoekstra of the University of Amsterdam. In the scientific journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, the researchers therefore argue for large fireworks-free zones.
Last year, other researchers at IBED discovered that geese are so affected by fireworks that they spend an average of 10% longer looking for food than normal during at least the next 11 days. They apparently need that time to restore their energy to their former condition, after fleeing from the fireworks.
Because 62% of all birds in the Netherlands live within a radius of 2. 5 km of inhabited areas, the consequences of fireworks are high for all birds throughout the country. “Flying requires a lot of energy, so ideally birds should be disturbed as little as possible during the cold winter months. Measures to ensure this are especially important in open areas such as grasslands, where many larger birds spend the winter. The effects of fireworks on birds are less pronounced near forests and semi-open habitats. In addition, smaller birds such as tits and finches live there, which are less likely to fly away from disturbance.”
The authors argue for fireworks-free zones in areas where large birds live. Hoekstra: “These buffer zones could be smaller in areas where light and sound travel less far, such as near forests. Furthermore, fireworks should mainly be lit at central locations in built-up areas, as far away from birds as possible. It would be best for birds if we moved towards light shows without sound, such as drone shows or decorative fireworks without very loud bangs.”
32. What can we learn about the research
A. It’s the first one about fireworks’ effects on birds.
B. It’s conducted by collecting data from weather radars.
C. It shows the extent of the fireworks’ influence on birds.
D. It keeps track of birds throughout Netherlands and beyond.
33. Why did geese spend more time looking for food
A. To make up for the lost energy. B. To store more food in case.
C. To find a new source of energy. D. To find a place without fireworks.
34. What does the underlined word “pronounced” in Para. 4 mean
A. Predictable. B. Noticeable. C. Admirable. D. Avoidable.
35. What can be the best title for the passage
A. Panic in the air. B. Fireworks-free zones.
C. Fireworks in the world. D. Birds throughout the country.

Learn from Regrets
In daily life, everyone may have regrets, but do you know how to learn from regrets 36 Instead of letting a failed relationship make you miserable, you simply wish it turned out differently. You can be honest with yourself about what went wrong and use that knowledge to enjoy better relationships in the future. Here are some steps you can take.
Overcome the fear. People often say their regrets always trouble them and even cast a shadow over their mind. Bring your mind out of the shadow by making a list of your regrets. 37 Be honest without worrying too much. You will find that the list is a lot less frightening.
38 After you make a mistake, life moves on. But sometimes you just can’t stop kicking yourself. Perhaps you didn’t pay much attention to studies years ago, and now you are constantly imagining how excellent you are if you could have studied hard. Blaming yourself makes no sense. Resolve to commute your emotional sentence with a simple verbal declaration: I apologize to myself and will not waste another minute of my life reliving a decision that cannot be changed.
Treasure regrets. Regrets are essential throughout your life. 39 Instead, the value of the previous regrets is that they will serve as a constant reminder for your future’s opportunities and relationships.
In conclusion, your regrets can teach you to become smarter and more successful—if you let them do. So it’s time to make your list of regrets, outline your resolutions and change your inappropriate behavior. 40
A. Forgive yourself.
B. Focus on studies.
C. You can write down why each one still bothers you and its effects.
D. Piling a list of regrets in front of you can make others feel frightened.
E. The trick is not to get rid of the bad feeling but use it for improvement.
F. Also invest your own skills and improvement right now and get started.
G. If you didn’t experience regrets, you would repeat the same wrong behaviors.

Mom always has the purse with her. The purse contains a receipt for everything she has purchased since around 1980. At first, the purse was relatively normal in size, but over the years it has expanded to what seems like two feet in width. It is hopelessly, permanently open and overflowing. I always hated the purse.
Last Friday afternoon, I called Mom to tell her I had some lab work that needed to be done at school. So, I would be home late. Instead, my friend Heather and I went directly to the movies after school. When we came out, to my complete horror, Mom was standing there with the purse. She’d taken my sister to the movies as well.
Surprisingly, Mom smiled at me, and then at Heather, and invited us to dinner. It seems she had a coupon(优惠券) for McDonald’s. A coupon What were we, homeless I couldn’t believe she suggested a coupon in front of Heather.
And just when I thought things couldn’t get worse, she started looking for the coupon. Oh no! Not the purse! She put the purse onto a resting chair outside the theater and began shuffling through(胡乱翻动) the papers. Then, all of a sudden, it dropped to the ground. Each one of those million receipts ended up on the ground, too. Crowds of people were stepping on all those papers.
That’s when I lost it. The words just came out. “I can’t believe you!” I shouted. “You are totally embarrassing me! Why do you have to carry all this useless stuff with you all the time ” My mom and my sister were on their knees picking up all those little pieces of paper. We left the theater and drove Heather home in silence.
