“I was in the ICU. I’d been told I’d be released the next day. The worst, it seemed, was behind me.” Jake Ryan didn’t know it at the time, but the worst was not totally behind him. After his open heart surgery, he was about to enter a different and difficult journey on the road to physical and emotional recovery.
Upon discharge (出院), the hospital gave Jake a “care package.” “I miss my 3-year-old twins. I remember thinking how much I wished there was a book in the package that would offer guidance for how to be a dad following surgery. There wasn’t, but it was out of that thought that this book was born.”
Dear Diary Franklin is a novel written in the voice of 11-year-old Hannah Brody, whose father had suddenly collapsed on a gym floor and was in need of serious medical attention. The book is written in diary format, which gets readers deep inside the head and heart of its young heroine.
Through her diary, readers hear about Hannah’s feelings and frustrations as she copes with the anger, fear and confusion of the impact of her father’s surgery. What are they keeping from me And why She repeatedly hears the catchall cliché (陈词滥调) “everything is going to be fine” so many times that she can only think anything but. Her own translation: “Normal was over.” While her dad does his best to keep things as normal as possible, his recovery, as you’d imagine, is slow and his routine changes. Meanwhile, there’s the matter of school and Hannah’s place within what for some is a terrifying social universe—she has few friends.
While Ryan said his motivation was to help men (or parents in general) deal with the aftereffects of major surgery in their families and themselves, he has delivered a valuable story for children and grownups alike in how to tackle a difficult life event that nobody can truly prepare you for.

Will artificial intelligence (AI) replace my job This is a question that many people think about these days. At present, the application of AI robotics in professional fields, as well as ChatGPT’s abilities to write essays, solve complex problems and more, have heightened moral concerns.
Some people see AI as the ultimate cure for society’s most fundamental problems, while others fear that AI will overtake human intelligence. These two views are based on the assumption that AI is better and smarter than humanity and may ultimately replace human decision-making. But given the fact that technology is the product of human civilization, the challenge from AI is something we have created for ourselves as we keep pushing our own boundaries. In other words, AI’s progress, functions and future direction are all determined by the human brain.
Before AI becomes a threat to humanity, the international community should reach an agreement on the role it is to play. More importantly, related laws and regulations must ensure that AI will benefit society and prevent it from threatening human life. Robots, for example, are believed to develop emotional intelligence sometime, which enables them to recognize, understand and express emotions in a way that is similar to humans, but we must avoid AI copying human emotions. Without legal restrictions, AI may become a social disaster.
The AI-driven new industrial revolution is irreversible. This, like previous ones, which introduced changes that had been unimaginable before, will certainly affect human employment. But it always turned out humanity was able to adapt to each industrial revolution and create new forms of employment. Therefore, it’s unnecessary to worry AI will replace our jobs. While technology advances at a rapid pace, what we need to do is to welcome the AI era rather than block its unfolding for fear of the unknown.
28. Why are some people concerned about AI
A. It may outsmart humans. B. It has led to social problems.
C. It has been applied widely. D. It is the product of humanity.
29. How can we prevent AI’s potential threat
A. By stirring emotions. B. By blocking functions.
C. By setting restrictions. D. By changing regulations.
30. What does the underlined word “irreversible” in the last paragraph mean
A. Undesirable. B. Unavoidable.
C. Unpredictable. D. Unbelievable.
31. What does the writer suggest readers do with the coming of the AI era
A. Accept it passively. B. Deal with it positively.
C. Respond to it randomly. D. Defend it unconditionally.
【答案】28. A 29. C 30. B 31. B

As a child, Molly Easterlin loved playing sports. Sports, Easterlin believes, underlie most of her greatest successes. They taught her discipline and teamwork, helped her make friends and enabled her to navigate the many challenges of growing up.
When Easterlin became a doctor, she started seeing a lot of children suffering from trauma (心理创伤). Many of these kids didn’t respond fully to traditional treatment for trauma. Depressed and searching for answers, Easterlin turned to her own past. “I suspected that sports might have a powerful impact,” she says.
Her research, published Tuesday, finds that, in short, yes: Participation in team sports as a young person can significantly reduce the long-term likelihood of depression and anxiety for people with childhood trauma.
To analyze how team sports impact the health of people who have experienced childhood adversity (逆境). Easterlin and her colleagues analyzed data from 9,668 teens who participated in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. They homed in on about 5,000 teens who had reported one or more adverse childhood experiences (ACEs).
The kids were assessed first in 1994–1995 when they were in seventh to 12th grade and asked whether they participated in team sports. Fourteen years later, in 2008, these same people, now adults, were asked whether they had ever received a diagnosis (诊断) of depression or anxiety. They were also tested for depressive symptoms in case they just hadn’t been diagnosed.
Easterlin found that kids who had participated in team sports were significantly less likely to receive a diagnosis of depression or anxiety and less likely to test positive for depressive symptoms. The study also doesn’t point out exactly why sports may help, but. Easterlin thinks teamwork may be a key.
However, Easterlin says, it’s important to consider additional factors, like emotional connection with relatives and a sense of safety and support. Easterlin also notes that the study did not distinguish between kids with one ACE and those with multiple ACEs: For kids with more ACEs, she thinks the effect of team sports would very likely have been even more powerful, but it remains to be further studied.
32. What does the underlined word “underlie” mean in Paragraph 1
A. Stabilize. B. Facilitate. C. Relieve. D. Dismiss.
33. How was the National Longitudinal Study mainly conducted

D. By conducting long-term tracking of research subjects.
34. What might play a key role in sports’ impact according to Easterlin
A. Time management. B. Teamwork. C. Exercise intensity. D. Gender.
35. What does the last paragraph focus on
A. The illustration of the research’s possible limitations.
B. The methodology of the research on adolescent health.
C. The significance of sports in treating childhood trauma.
D. The connection between team sports and reduced depression.

As the chairman of Student Union, I am, with heartfelt sincerity, writing to invite you to deliver a speech concerning daily exercise.
The speech is scheduled at 5:00 p. m. this Friday in the stadium. The reason why we choose this theme is, initially, students’ insufficient awareness of exercise in daily life. Burdened with loads of schoolwork, seldom do students spare time for doing exercise. Additionally, taking into account the national appealing to cultivate all-round students, practicing exercise enables us to be qualified graduates.
Your accepting the invitation would be highly appreciated, and you, a sport enthusiast, can undoubtedly juice the speech up and make it reach a wider audience.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Catherine’s birthday was approaching, and the excitement that usually filled her heart was now replaced with disappointment and stress. Turning eleven was a big deal, and she had always celebrated it with a grand party surrounded by her friends. However, this year was different. The burden of excessive homework and her parents’ struggling business weighed heavily on her, forcing Catherine to make the difficult decision of not having a birthday party, even though it was an event she enjoyed dearly every year.
One day, during break, her best friend, Sandy, with a curious look in her eyes, approached. “Are you going to have a birthday party this year ” Sandy asked, sensing Catherine’s sadness.
“No,” Catherine sighed and replied sadly, “There’s just too much going on and my parents are going through financial difficulties.”
She smiled weakly, trying to conceal her immense disappointment and stress, but Sandy saw through her pretence (假装) easily. Sandy nodded thoughtfully and did not say anything. After the break, Catherine saw her talking to one of their classmates, Kelly, secretively. Curious, Catherine went over to them, but as soon as Sandy saw her, she quickly walked away. Catherine was startled by Sandy’s strange actions and turned towards Kelly.
“What did she say ” Catherine asked.
However, Kelly simply shrugged and walked away with Sandy, leaving Catherine standing there, feeling left out and anxious.
What is happening Catherine wondered anxiously. Are they keeping something from me
As Catherine’s birthday drew nearer, Sandy was often found chatting softly with her other classmates. Whenever Catherine went over to them, they would just walk away or tell her that they were talking about a secret which Catherine was not allowed to know. Sandy has never kept secrets from me before, Catherine thought. Her heart fell. Even her friends were distancing themselves from her! She swung between confusion and sadness with each passing moment, desperately trying to figure out what was happening. Why were her friends distancing themselves from her And what were they hiding

On the day of Catherine’s birthday, she went to school and found her classroom in total darkness. A wave of confusion washed over her as she stepped hesitantly into the room, her heart pounding. She reached for the light switch, but before her hand could find it, a chorus of voices broke the silence. “Surprise!”, her classmates, led by Sandy, jumped out from all sorts of hiding places. As the room flooded with light, Catherine’s eyes widened in surprise and disbelief. The classroom was decorated with balloons and streamers, a beautiful cake sat on the teacher’s desk, and in the corner, a pile of presents waited to be unwrapped.
Tears sprang from Catherine’s eyes and her face broke into a radiant smile. She turned towards Jane, who was grinning from ear to ear. “We knew you couldn’t have a party this year, so we decided to bring the party to you,” Sandy said, her eyes twinkling with mischief. The cloud of confusion lifted from Catherine’s mind as she realized that her friends hadn’t been distancing themselves from her, they were planning this surprise all along. The sadness that had been looming over her birthday disappeared, replaced with joy and gratitude. As she cut the cake and opened her presents, Catherine realized that this was indeed a grand birthday party, just like the ones she used to have.南宁三中高考模拟试题

C By setting restrictions. D. By changing regulations.
30. What does the underlined word “irreversible” in the last paragraph mean

C. Unpredictable. D. Unbelievable.
31. What does the writer suggest readers do with the coming of the AI era
A. Accept it passively. B. Deal with it positively.
C. Respond to it randomly. D. Defend it unconditionally.
