Clementine Lee’s farm animals aren’t staying put — they’re hitting the road, bringing smiles to children all over Whidbey Island. Earlier this year, Lee launched Happy Hooves and Quacky Feet, a moving petting zoo that features a delightful collection of ducks, sheep, and goats, all ready to make appearances at events.
Among the playful east of characters are a goose named Dog and a dog named Goose, adding an extra touch of fun to the experience. With hopes that the animals will soon give birth by spring, the zoo is aimed at ensuring the animals are friendly and approachable for children.
Having previously worked as a preschool teacher and face-painter, Lee saw a natural progression in creating a mobile petting zoo. She’s already brought her animals to birthday parties and events like the recent Greenbank Farm Harvest Faire. “My life keeps taking me in new and exciting directions,” she said with enthusiasm.
Caring for the animals is a family effort, with help from her 9-year-old son, Leonidas Mitchell. Ducks were the first animals they acquired while living in northern California, but the family tragically lost their home and animals in one of Santa Rosa’s destructive fires.
Lee’s love for animals grew after a moving experience at an outdoor farm school which her son attended. There, she met an affectionate sheep named Celeste, who offered her comfort after the loss of her home. “After everything, this sheep just came up and gave me all the love and hugs,” Lee recalled.
To her surprise, Celeste and her two lambs, Clover and Crimson, would one day become part of Lee’s own flock. In 2021, after moving to North Whidbey, Lee’s son’s former teacher offered her the sheep. Lee happily drove 16 hours from California to bring them to Oak Harbor. Reflecting on the experience, she added, “I never knew I’d love a sheep or a goose. I used to think sheep were afraid of everything, but they can be so affectionate.”
Next up for Happy Hooves and Quacky Feet is the Fall Festival at Whidbey Grace in Oak Harbor, where the animals will put on Halloween costumes. The event takes place on Sunday, October 20, from 5-7 p.m.
24. What is special about the zoo
A. It shelters all kinds of animals. B. It’s a mobile zoo.
C. It plays host to animal shows. D. It’s family-friendly.
25. Why did Lee start the project
A. To advocate eco-tourism. B. To boost animal population.
C. To highlight unique species. D. To fuel kid-nature interaction.
26. What deepened the bond between Lee and animals
A. Losing her home. B. Taking care of ducks.
C. Encountering a sheep. D. Attending a farm school.
27. Which of the following best describes Lee
A. Patient and warm-hearted. B. Generous and courageous.
C. Innovative and passionate. D. Adventurous and easy-going.
C
One of the main distinctions between plants and animals is how they respond to stimuli (刺激物). Animals have neurons that transmit sensory feelings to a central nervous system. In humans, if your brain determines that those feelings are negative and dangerous, it sends a message back to their point of origin, causing you to react to avoid the continuation of that pain. Animals like us have memories that allow us to avoid future pain.
Without a central nervous system, plants don’t process sensations that way. But plants do react to negative or unpleasant sensations. Touch the leaves of a sensitive plant, Mimosa pudica, and it’ll close them. Cut off the branches of a shrub, and the shrub will produce a scab (痂) around the wound, and likely stimulate new growth below the cut.
Plants preserve memories of these events — not in a centralized brain, but distributed throughout the plant, closer to where the memory is needed. This isn’t merely a biophysical response to stimuli. Touch the leaves of a sensitive plant repeatedly, and the plant will no longer close its leaves. It has learned the sensation isn’t a threat, and will keep that knowledge for 40 days.
One of the most important and frequent inter-species relationships on Earth is the association between fungi (真菌) and plant roots — a relationship common to 90% of plant species. Through these networks, plants communicate with fungi and other plants, transferring important chemicals like nitrogen, carbon, etc. to each other and sending stress signals.
Some plants also communicate using sounds. Recent studies reveal some plants emit high-frequency sound waves. Tomato and tobacco plants produce sounds during droughts or when their leaves are cut. Additionally, pea plants send their roots toward the sound of moving water — even if the sound is recorded and no water is actually present.
Most of a plant’s life is lived underground. This is where plants do their thinking, in a decentralized network of sensory and memory cells. Sadly, humans prize plants primarily for their reproductive organs — their flowers, fruits, and seeds—rather than their thinking and feeling parts. Like us, they use both to survive.
28. What can we know about plants’ responses compared to animals
A. Plants feel pain in the same way as animals. B. Plants process stimuli in a distributed manner.
C. Plants react faster than animals. D. Plants use sunlight for all responses.
29. What enable plants to share nutrients between each other
A. The regular stimuli B. Their distributed systems.
C. The fungus-root networks. D. Their good living conditions.
30. What does the author think is a pity
A. Plants’ living conditions are threatened. B. Plants’ thinking is misunderstood.
C. Plants’ reproduction is declining. D. Plants’ abilities are underestimated.
31. What is the most appropriate title for the text
A. The role of fungi in plant growth
B. Sensory and memory functions in plants
C. The importance of plant reproductive organs
D. Animals’ and plants’ different responses to pain
D
The Internet is a busy place, with billions of interactions, millions of content pieces, and large numbers of social media accounts and data about people. But in recent years, the so-called “dead Internet theory” has gained popularity. The theory suggests that most activity online is generated by bots (网上机器人) and AI agents, not by humans.
Thanks to generative AI, plenty of AI-generated models and influencers now often show up online. AI-generated content has changed the dynamics of the Internet, making it cheaper than ever to become a content creator. It makes sense, especially from a creator’s perspective. If you spend a few hours on a video for your social pages, you expect to get likes, follows, and subscriptions. However, if you can produce three videos within the same time with AI assistance, you’re increasing your chances of creating those things within the same period.
However, AI could lead to an Internet that feels dead due to a lack of obviously original content and articles that lack a human-touch — regardless of viewpoint, experience or humour. Fortunately, one glimmer of hope here is that some online giants have been taking action to reduce bot use, or so they say. Such measures are partly due to advertisers becoming more understanding regarding what makes up real human views versus bot-generated ones. So, no, the Internet is not dead. At least not yet.
Dead Internet theory may be hyperbole (夸张), but it raises two important points. First, the Internet is undoubtedly moving in this direction. Second, and more significantly, the theory causes a broader unease about the emotional and social dynamics online. Social media is now the primary news source for many users around the world. Therefore, there’s potential for AI agents to promote false information and interact with each other to boost engagement, which does leave room for concern.
So we do have to accept that humans share online spaces with bots and AI agents. As information spreads faster than ever across digital platforms, caution is advised: Never assume it’s actually a human you’re interacting with on the other side of your screen.
32. What can be learned about “dead Internet theory”
A. AI agents and bots dominate online activities.
B. Content found online is frequently repeated.
C. Humans are losing interest in online interactions.
D. Social media collapse due to information overload.
33. Why do today’s creators turn to AI for content production
A. To guarantee the originality of their content.
B. To make content creation completely effortless.
C. To enhance efficiency of achieving their goals.
D. To adapt to the changing dynamics of the Internet.
34. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A. The role of social media in news distribution.
B. Digital platforms as the main source of news.
C. The analysis of the reasons for Internet death.
D. Social media’s influence and its potential issues.
35. What is the author’s advice on interacting online
A. Decrease the application of artificial intelligence.
B. Protect personal privacy by limiting shared details.
C. Try to identify the reliability of real human beings.
D. Keep a watchful eye on the Internet interactions.

In the small town of Millfield, where stone streets wound between old buildings, lived Lily, a young girl who loved stories. Her family was poor, and they had no money for books. But her strong wish to learn took her to the town’s bookstores. Wearing a worn-out backpack and an old sweater, she would go inside, pretending to look at books while secretly reading as much as possible.
Once at Mrs. Jenkins’ Book Nook, she would pretend to look around while reading quickly. The strict owner once shouted, “This isn’t a library!” after she found Lily reading a worn copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Even though she felt embarrassed, Lily couldn’t stop coming back. The smell of old books and the hope of finding new stories were too hard to resist.
One cold morning, with ice hanging from the shop windows, Lily passed Mr. Blackwell’s Book Emporium. A book with shiny letters on the cover in the window caught her eye: The Enchanted Forest. The cover showed a bright forest, with a mysterious path leading into the fog. She couldn’t help it—she opened the creaking door. A.bell rang, sounding loud in the almost-empty store.
She walked to the fantasy book section. She wanted to touch the book so much. Just as she reached for it, a shadow came over her. Mr. Blackwell, a tall man with a thick beard, stood there, looking angry. “Another kid who thinks she can read without paying,” he said crossly. Lily felt her heart drop. Her face turned red with shame, and she thought she would be told to leave again.
But then, a gentle voice said, “Dad, wait.” Emma, a girl about Lily’s age came from behind a bookshelf. She looked kindly at Lily and smiled. “She is my friend,” Emma said, looking at Mr. Blackwell. “She loves books just like I do.” Mr. Blackwell still looked doubtful, but he stepped back, still watching Lily closely. Lily held the book tightly, her mind full of worry.

In today’s fast-paced world, stress has become an inevitable part of our lives. However, learning to manage stress is crucial for maintaining both mental and physical well-being.
One effective way to cope with stress is through regular exercise. Physical activities like jogging, yoga, or even a simple walk can release endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. Another useful technique is mindfulness meditation. Taking just 10 minutes a day to sit quietly and focus on your breathing can significantly lower your stress levels. Additionally, maintaining a healthy social life is essential. Talking to friends or family about your concerns can provide emotional support and new perspectives on problems.
By adopting these stress management techniques, I can face challenges more calmly and enjoy life more fully. Stress will always be there, but how we respond to it makes all the difference.

Lily tried to apologize and return the book, but words failed her. Paralyzed by guilt, tears welled up in her eyes as she stood there, frozen, acutely aware of the disappointment in Mr. Blackwell’s gaze. Emma stepped closer and gently took the book from Lily’s trembling hands. “Dad,” she said, “ let’s give her a chance. We can start a ‘book-sharing’ program. People can read here for free if they help tidy the shelves or recommend books.” As Emma spoke, Lily watched in disbelief, her heart pounding with a mix of hope and relief, her mind racing with the possibility of redemption. Mr. Blackwell looked surprised at first, then he nodded slowly.
“Well, I guess it’s not a bad idea,” Mr. Blackwell said. He let out a long breath and rubbed his beard, a hint of a smile beginning to play at the corners of his mouth. From that day on, Lily became a regular helper at the bookstore. She spent hours organizing books, chatting with customers. In the quiet moments between tasks, she would often lose herself in the worlds of the novels, finding comfort and inspiration within the pages. Mrs. Jenkins, hearing about the new program, also decided to allow kids to read in her store. Lily’s love for books, once hidden and ashamed, now shone brightly. She even started a small book club with Emma, sharing stories and bringing joy to more kids in the town.

M: Our opinions on films are usually pretty much the same.
W: Well, if you’re not going to the cinema tonight, do you want to join my friends and me for a game of bowling We need one more player to make a team of six.
M: Yeah, that sounds like fun. Where are you going
W: Riverside Bowling. It’s on the south side of the river.
M: Yeah, I know where it is. It’s next to the modern art museum.
W: That’s the one. We are meeting there at 7:00 p.m.
M: OK, it’s only a 15-minute walk from my flat. I will see you then.

M: Good afternoon, everyone. Have you ever wondered how technology is shaping our lives Today, I’d like to talk about a fascinating development in the tech world—the rise of smart homes. Smart homes use Internet-connected devices to automate tasks such as controlling lighting, heating, and even security systems. These systems are designed to make life more convenient and efficient. For example, with a simple voice command, you can adjust the temperature in your house or turn off the lights. Many people find these features very useful, especially for elderly or disabled individuals who may have difficulty with regular tasks. However, as with any new technology, there are concerns about privacy and security. It’s important to consider both the benefits and risks when deciding whether a smart home is right for you. In the next session, I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages in more detail.
