There are a lot of reasons to go out in nature to look around. It makes us feel happy and helps us know about the plants and animals.
For most scientists, however, nature gives out something more—the ideas to improve people’s life. They study bees to work out how small robots might “talk” to report the weather. They look at gecko’s (壁虎的) feet to find how to make tape. They study fruit flies to help doctors save people’s lives.
“There are so many fun ways that animals develop to solve (解决) problems, and some of them are ones we never think of.” says Lisa Manning, a professor of the bioinspired (生物启发的) center. Zhenyu Gan is a robot engineer in the center. He makes robots with four legs or more, instead of robots with wheels (轮子).
To find out how legged robots could stand or walk, Gan looks to animals such as horses and mice. “The first thing we have to understand is how they move.” Gan says.
“Usually, robots with two legs like people are clumsy. Just think about how a baby learns to stand and walk. But my robots have four legs or more, just like horses, making the robots walk or run easily and fast.” says Gan.
Gan’s robots have lots of uses. They can explore the moon. Hospitals use doglike robots to work with doctors. Police use legged robots to search fallen buildings for missing people.

In a restaurant, some customers (顾客) order thick and heavy soup, while others drink thin and clear one. A few people only eat vegetables. They do not eat fish or chicken at all!

Clearly, it’s helpful to the environment by reusing and recycling (再利用). Ning said, “Everything on the tables is free, you just need to pay 35 yuan to get in.”
Old phones and out-of-season clothes are just some of the things people are clearing out through secondhand trading. A new report from Tsinghua University shows that since 2020, China’s secondhand market has grown to l trillion (万亿) yuan and is expected to hit 3 trillion yuan by 2025.
Offline secondhand trading events are popular all over China. Secondhand goods platform (平台) Xianyu opened a store in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, on Jan 28. In Chongqing, visitors often visit secondhand stores in areas like Daijia Alley to find clothing.
People aged 18 to 34 are the most active in the secondhand market, according to People’s Daily. Young people used to avoid secondhand things, but now they like them. “It’s not just about saving money. People care more about the environment now,” Ning said.

Last year, a primary school in Fujian Province made a decision. It would no longer prepare meals in its own canteen (食堂). Instead, it would serve its students pre-made (预制的) food. The move quickly became a hot topic across the country. Many parents said that they were worried about food safety. Some of them even sent homemade meals to school at lunchtime every day.
The Ministry of Education (教育部) warns against introducing pre-made meals to schools. That’s mainly because there are not yet any national standards for such food. The market for pre-made meals has been developing quickly over the past few years. In 2022, there were more than 60,000 related companies (公司) in China. And the number is still growing. By 2026, the market will have reached more than one trillion yuan.
What has made pre-made meals so popular They have many advantages. They’re quick and convenient to prepare. They also have a long shelf life (保存期). However, parents’ worries are not without reason. Pre-made food may be acceptable sometimes, but few people eat it every day. Naturally, parents don’t want their children to do so, either.
In fact, pre-made meals are all prepared by central kitchens. They’re not always unhealthy compared with freshly cooked food. The problem is how to make sure these companies follow all the hygiene rules when they cook and store food. For now, the pre-made food industry still has a long way to go.
