The cold northern wind here in the streets of Petersburg strengthens my nerves and fills me with delight. I cannot think of the Pole as cold and empty; in my imagination it is a region of beauty and delight. Who knows what strange landscapes and creatures we may find there I shall satisfy my curiosity with the sight of an unknown part of the world, and walk where no man has before. Thinking of it, I feel the same joy a child feels when he sails his little boat on a voyage of discovery up his native river.
This voyage was the favorite dream of my early years. My education was neglected, yet I was passionately fond of reading. Uncle Thomas’s library contained only books about exploration, which I read day and night. Finally, my thoughts come to the idea of making a voyage of discovery.
Six years have passed since I decided on the present voyage. I can, even now, remember the hour when I committed myself to this great enterprise. I began by making my body used to hardship. I went on whale hunting voyages to the North Sea; I voluntarily endured cold, hunger, thirst, and lack of sleep. I often worked harder than the common sailors during the day. Then, at nights, I studied mathematics, the theory of medicine, and sciences of practical importance for a sea-going adventurer. Twice I took jobs as an officer on a Greenland whaling ship. I felt a little proud when my captain asked me to remain with the ship, so valuable did he consider my services. And now, do I not deserve to achieve some great task My life might have been passed in ease and comfort, but I preferred glory to every pleasure that wealth placed in my path.
4. What does the author think of the Pole
A. It reminds him of his childhood.
B. It must be a region full of surprises.
C. It would fulfil his dream of being an adventurer.
D. It’s too cold a destination with almost nothing.
5. What does the bold-lettered word “enterprise” in the last paragraph mean
A. career. B. adventure. C. business. D. service.
6. To realize his childhood dream, the author got .
A. physically prepared by experiencing great suffering
B. spiritually prepared by gaining his captain’s recognition
C. academically prepared by reading books on exploration
D. financially prepared by serving on a whale hunting ship
7. According to the text, the author is definitely a person full of .
A. courage B. fancy C. pride D. perseverance
C
Imagine finding yourself in a spoken word event (also known as performance poetry). You’re attracted by the performer on stage as he conveys his deepest thoughts to the room:
Today I bought you flowers,
How strange meanings can change,
What was once a symbol of joy is now one of pain,
A universal language for when you don’t know what to say.
The crowd is attentive but far from silent. Throughout the performance, you hear clapping and cheers, expressing approval of specific lines. And then the poem ends with thunderous applause and the poet returns to his seat. The performance has ended, but its energy continues to exist throughout the night.
Spoken word events are far from your standard poetry reading. Many people today think of poetry as a silent, individual act but it actually started as an oral tradition. Before mass literacy, poems and stories were shared verbally and performed to the public. In modern times, mass media provided audiences with alternative means of entertainment and the art of storytelling declined. The recent and increasing popularity of the spoken word is poetry returning to its oral roots.
The spoken word helps people achieve healing and emotional balance. It shares many benefits with written poetry, including helping us organize our thoughts, process our emotions and promote self-reflection. However, it’s not just the sharing of poetry that is healing. It’s the connections that form between the audience and the poet. This adds to the degree of social connection, which is central to the essence of spoken word poetry. Poets can freely be themselves without fear of judgment. Audience members who relate to the poet’s words also feel healing. Hearing someone who shares your feelings or experiences can make you feel less alone and more connected.
The spoken word is an unbelievably accessible art form. There are very few rules, and the form is interpreted fairly broadly. As long as you are performing an original piece which doesn’t include any offensive content, it will be accepted at a spoken word event.
8. Why is a spoken word performance described in the first paragraph
A. To explain the process of a spoken word event. B. To catch readers’ interest in the spoken word.
C. To emphasize the value of spoken word poetry. D. To encourage audience involvement in the event.
9. What’s the core of spoken word poetry according to the passage
A. The sharing of individual poems among performers.
B. The same feelings and experiences connecting people.
C. The promotion of self-reflection and emotional balance.
D. The extent of relationships between the poets and audience.
10. Based on the last paragraph, who will be welcome to perform spoken word events
A. Every individual with published work. B. Professional poets with published work.
C. Every individual with inoffensive original work. D. Professional poets with inoffensive original work.
11. What can be the best title of the passage
A. Spoken Word: More Than Just Poetry. B. Spoken Word: A New Trend in Performances.
C. Spoken Word: The Practice of Reading Aloud. D. Spoken Word: The Rising Appeal of Storytelling.
D
About 62m tonnes of electrical items ranging from computers to mobile phones, were abandoned globally in 2022. Typically, these electrical wastes are either burnt or treated with chemicals, like strong acids, to recover metals.
As these processes produce huge amounts of greenhouse gases and have poisonous by-products that are difficult to clear up, companies are developing a number of cleaner recycling methods. One of the most promising approaches turns to bacteria for help.
Bioleaching, as this process is called, is an old idea: more than 2,000 years ago, the water in copper mines was noticed to turn blue. It was not until the 1950s, though, after bacteria were found to be responsible for the phenomenon, that the process was commercialized to recover leftover material in the liquid.
When used outdoors, the process, though effective, can take months and is not very efficient. Contained within a modern processing plant, however, bioleaching can be sped up. The trick, according to Bioscope Technologies, an urban-mining company building a bioleaching plant in Cambridge, England, is to keep the bacteria in their preferred conditions that include a carefully controlled acidic environment, a warm temperature below 50℃ and a good supply of oxygen in their breeding tanks. Once these bacteria are mixed with the crushed electrical items in a reactor, they digest the metals within a day or two. Having done their stuff, the bacteria are moved to another breeding tank before being used again.
The resulting liquid is then treated in a number of ways to recover the metals. Gold quickly sinks to the bottom with the addition of a little water. An electric current passed through the liquid recovers copper in a manner similar to electroplating.
The process is capable of recovering almost all of the gold, silver, copper and palladium from the crushed electrical items, although the exact amount depends on the type of the items being recycled. PCBs from servers and telecoms equipment tend to contain the most precious metals, household appliances less so. The recovered gold and other metals are pure enough to be used again in electronics.
12. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. The development of bioleaching. B. Problems with traditional methods.
C. Varieties of recycling approaches. D. The accidental discovery of bacteria.
13. Which of the following can help speed up bioleaching
A. Keeping the temperature constant. B. Leaving the breeding tank outdoors.
C. Putting more oxygen in the reactor. D. Creating a very acidic environment.
14. During bioleaching, the electroplating-like method is used to recover ______.
A. gold B. silver C. palladium D. copper
15. What can be learned from the last paragraph
A. PCBs contain the most precious metals. B. The recovered metals can be very pure.
C. Different items should be separated first. D. Household appliances should not be recycled.

Near my home, there exists a charming little lake, equipped with a long walking path that winds its way gracefully around the water’s edge. When my kid, Tony, was young, we often drove there a few times a week. We liked to walk on the path. We could breathe fresh air and enjoy the beauty of nature.
One Autumn day, as we arrived at our usual destination, I couldn’t help but notice that the path, which had always been a source of such delight, was looking rather dirty. There was a lot of ugly trash on the path. It was obviously left by some walkers. And that made the lake lose its charm. When we started walking, after just a short while, we saw another piece of trash spoiling the nice view. Then Tony said that we could pick up the trash and make the lake a little cleaner. I agreed and so we bent down, picked up the trash, and put it in a bag. Before we made our way back to the car, I looked at the nearly full trash bag, and then I walked over to a nearby trash can to empty it. We didn’t pay much attention to that behavior after we returned. And our lives were the same as before.
One Thursday, when Tony came back from school, he told me that his school expected all the students to do something meaningful around them. And he asked me what he could do and what was a meaningful thing. Until that time, I just didn’t recall the park. So we were seeking things to do in the following days.
That weekend, we drove to the park with the intention of unwinding and having a pleasant time. We saw many children playing there and Tony said that he would join them later. As we drew closer to the walk path that encircles the charming lake, we noticed some scattered trash here and there. At that moment, I thought of Tony’s assignment and then a sudden inspiration struck me.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I told Tony I knew what meaningful thing he could do.

B. It must be a region full of surprises.
C. It would fulfil his dream of being an adventurer.

A. career. B. adventure. C. business. D. service.
6. To realize his childhood dream, the author got .
A. physically prepared by experiencing great suffering
B. spiritually prepared by gaining his captain’s recognition
C. academically prepared by reading books on exploration
D. financially prepared by serving on a whale hunting ship
7. According to the text, the author is definitely a person full of .
A. courage B. fancy C. pride D. perseverance
【答案】4. B 5. B 6. A 7. D

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I told Tony I knew what meaningful thing he could do.

Seeing our efforts, more people joined us.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
I told Tony I knew what meaningful thing he could do. I said, “Remember when we picked up trash here last time Let’s do it again. It’ll make the park beautiful and is a great project for your school.” Tony’s eyes immediately lit up with excitement, his face glowing with anticipation. “That’s a wonderful idea, Mom!” he exclaimed. Then we quickly got the gloves and trash bags from the car and got right to work, gathering trash along the path. Tony was especially enthusiastic, darting from one piece of litter to the next.
Seeing our efforts, more people joined us. The children, who had been playing nearby, also came over, their eyes wide with curiosity and eagerness. With so many hands, the clean-up went much faster. We not only cleared the path but also organized a small awareness campaign about keeping the park clean. Tony was beaming with pride as he realized how much impact his simple act could have. This experience has taught him that even a small deed can inspire a big change and make the world a better place.
