二、阅读理解
Is modern fruit cultivated (培育) to be sweeter than in the past The short answer is yes, though the longer answer is more complicated. Some of the most powerful evidence that fruit is sweeter than before comes from zoos.
In 2018, it was reported that Melboume Zoo in Australia had stopped giving fruit to most of its animals because cultivated fruit was now so sweet that it was causing tooth decay (蛀牙) and weight gain. The monkeys at the zoo were provided with a lower-sugar vegetable-based diet instead of bananas.
Among fruit cultivators, the word “quality” is now routinely used as an equal for “high in sugar” (though firmness, color and size are also considerations). In 2010, in an article looking at ways to enhance the sweetness of fruit using “molecuiar (分子的) approaches”, a group of plant scientists of the Republic of Korea wrote that “in general, the sugar content” of many fruits is now higher than before “owing to continuous selection and breeding”. Modern apple varieties, the scientists noted, were on average sweeter than older ones.
Cultivation isn’t the only reason that modern fruit is sweeter; there’s also climate change. Research from Japan found that since the 1970s, with rising temperatures, Fuji apples (which were already a sweet variety) have become significantly sweeter and softer. The lead researcher, Toshihoko Sugiura, said that “if you could taste an apple harvested 30 years ago, you would feel the difference”.
It is sometimes claimed that the sweetness of modern fruit is not due to higher sugar content so much as the fact that the bitterness and sourness of wild fruit have been steadily cultivated out of it. There’s a grain — but only a grain — of truth in this. Studies of wild apples do indeed suggest that some ancient varieties were just as high in sugar as a modern Pink Lady or Honeycrisp. The difference is that there was much wider variation in sugar content across wild apples, whereas the modern supermarket apple seldom drops below a certain level of sweetness.
21.Why did Melbourne Zoo stop giving fruit to most of its animals
A.The animals preferred a vegetable- based diet.
B.Modern fruit did great harm to animals’ teeth.
C.The sugar content of modern fruit is lower than before.
D.The flavor of modern fruit was not good for the animals.
22.What can we learn from paragraph 3
A.The sugar content is breeders’ first priority.
B.Sweeter fruits are just a result of natural selection.
C.The sweetness of modern apples is equal to the average of older ones.
D.Molecular approaches are adopted to add the sweetness of modern fruit.
23.What do studies of wild apples in the last paragraph suggest
A.Apples of old species tasted less sweet.
B.The sugar content of wild apples varied greatly.
C.The sweetness of modern apples is of the same level.
D.Fruit is sweet because bitterness in it has disappeared.
24.What’s the best title for this passage
A.Modern or Old: Which Is Better B.Modern Fruit: Sweetness Is Quality.
C.Fruit Is Sweeter: It’s Not a Misconception. D.Melbourne Zoo: Animals Stop Eating Fruits.
In a study of 4,000 people, 56% of women described being unhappy with their physical appearance. Furthermore, 89% wanted to lose weight, and 15% had used weight loss strategies for at least 5 years of their life.
The fact that 89% of women want to lose weight shows how unattainable (难以实现的) the measures of feminine (女性的) beauty are. For genetic and biological reasons, there are many different kinds of beauty. If we compare ourselves to the impossible measures that only 10% of the population can achieve naturally, we will always be “ugly”. Even models who measure up to the “ideals” of beauty and fashion have also expressed dissatisfaction with their bodies. For example, Irina Shayk said that she feels insecure and ugly.
Women who don’t feel beautiful develop a style of passive emotional coping when faced with their image. Conversely (相反), active emotional coping refers to actions taken to gain control of the situation. This coping style involves the psychological activation of our resources to do things such as stress management.
Current studies show that women are less influenced by their body mass index, and more influenced by the image they have of themselves. Therefore, a woman with model features who has a passive coping style when it comes to her body may not feel beautiful. However, a woman with less “popular” features, using an active coping method, may feel more beautiful.
Really, the western beauty standard is detrimental because extreme thinness is the prototype (典型) for what women should look like. This beauty ideal, as unattainable as it is extreme, has been internalized by many women. In return, women have experienced negative effects in the way they see themselves.
Negative self-concept influences the manner in which a woman faces her self-image. We develop our self-concept through interactions with others. If, every day, women receive information about how their bodies should look, our self-concept will diminish (降低). This is especially true if we don’t try to control our own resources and strengths.
25.Why is Irina Shayk mentioned in Paragraph 2
A.To explain what beauty means.
B.To encourage women to learn from her.
C.To prove that ugly women can be models too.
D.To show some measures of beauty are hard to achieve.
26.What can be inferred from the current studies
A.Confident women may feel more beautiful.
B.A passive coping style can be found in most women.
C.Women pay more attention to their weight than their image.
D.Women with model features are less influenced by their image.
27.What does the underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A.Official. B.Harmful. C.Achievable. D.Unlimited.
28.What plays an important role in developing our self-concept
A.Experience. B.Knowledge. C.Judgment. D.Appearance.
Many people are familiar with the horrible image of wildlife — including sea turtles, dolphins and seals — trapped in abandoned fishing nets. The main issue behind Nylon-6, the plastic inside these nets, carpet and clothing, is that it is too strong and durable to break down on its own. So, once it’s in the environment, it exists for thousands of years, littering waterways, breaking corals and killing birds and sea life.
Now, Northwestern University chemists have developed a new catalyst (催化剂) that quickly, cleanly and completely breaks down Nylon-6 in a matter of minutes — without generating harmful byproducts. More importantly, the process does not require poisonous solvents (溶剂), expensive materials or extreme conditions, making it practical for everyday applications.
Current methods to dispose of Nylon-6 are limited to simply burying it in landfills. When Nylon-6 is burned, it produces poisonous pollutants such as nitrogen oxides. Although other labs have explored catalysts to degrade Nylon-6, these catalysts require extreme conditions (such as temperatures as high as 350 degrees Celsius), high pressure steam (which is energetically expensive and inefficient) and / or toxic solvents that only contribute to more pollution.
To bypass these issues, the researchers looked to a novel catalyst already developed in the lab of Tobin Marks, the leader of the research. The catalyst takes advantage of yttrium — an inexpensive Earth-abundant metal. When the team heated Nylon-6 samples to melting temperatures and applied the catalyst without a solvent, the plastic fell apart — returning to its original building blocks without leaving byproducts behind. In experiments, Marks and his team were able to recover 99% of plastics’ original building blocks.
“Our research represents a significant step forward in the field of polymer recycling and sustainable material management.” said Marks. After filing a patent for new process, Marks and his team have already received interest from many potential industrial partners. They hope others can use their catalysts on a larger scale to help solve the global plastic problem.
29.What is Nylon-6 according to the text
A.A chemical that causes wildlife extinction.
B.The strongest plastic invented in history.
C.A material that is hard to degrade.
D.The nest used to trap sea creatures.
30.What is the feature of the new catalyst
A.Eco-friendly. B.Zero-waste. C.Carbon-free. D.Time-consuming.
31.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about
A.The use of yttrium. B.The anticipated result.
C.The research objectives. D.The experiment process.
32.Which of the following could be the best title
A.Tapped Sea Creatures Deserve Due Attention.
B.New Catalyst Found to Degrade Plastics.
C.A New Method to Address Pollution.
D.Ocean Pollution Settled for Good.
Whether through advertisements, news articles or social media posts, most of us by now have started hearing about the upcoming data network of the future. What is 5G
33 To help all of us understand them, we have listed some facts everyone should know.
● First, what is 5G
5G is the 5th generation network. It is a new global network after 1G, 2G, 3G and 4G, which can connect everyone and everything together. 34 With 5G there is a possibility that we can do everything.
● 35
Self-driving cars, which will depend on ultra-fast data transmission speeds to communicate with other cars as well as their surroundings, promise a safer transportation system if and when technology is fully realized.
●5G will change the way we work or study.
In the post-coronavirus world, having remote working capabilities will be more important than ever. Video meeting, e-learning and other Internet-enabled work applications will be possible to the point where people can use them as easily in their home or on the road as in the office or classroom. 36
●5G will change society in too many ways.
The use-cases and applications widely talked about are only a part of what 5G will make possible. Just as in the early days of the Internet in the 1990s, few foresaw the rise of useful websites like Wikipedia, org. The same will surely be true of 5G.
With 5G, other technologies don't seem like a dream anymore. 37 Now say goodbye to 4G in your homes and be prepared for the new wave of 5G.
A.Self-driving will grow popular.
B.5G will help make self-driving cars a reality.
C.The computer game players can have a faster speed.
D.Why does 5G matter so much in people's daily life
E.The power to do anything we want will be at our fingertips.
F.5G means faster data speeds and ultra-low latency (超低延迟).
G.It will be also easier for doctors to treat patients remotely by 5G.

四、语法填空
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
The Power of Small Gestures
In a world increasingly dominated by technology, some argue that human connection is 53 (gradual) fading. However, a recent study suggests that even minor acts of kindness can have profound impacts.
Researchers conducted an experiment 54 (involve) 500 participants. Each was asked to perform a simple task: hold the door open for a stranger. What 55 (observe) next was remarkable. Nearly 70% of those who received the kindness later helped others voluntarily, 56 showed a ripple effect of positivity.
Interestingly, the study also revealed cultural differences. In collectivist societies like Japan, people were 30% more likely 57 (respond) to small gestures compared with individualistic cultures. This finding challenges 58 assumption that technology universally isolates people.
59 deserves special attention is the neurological evidence. Brain scans demonstrated that both giving and receiving kindness activated areas relevant 60 dopamine (多巴胺) production. From an evolutionary perspective, this implies that our brains may have a 61 (tend) for cooperation.
Ultimately, the research reminds us that humanity’s greatest inventions aren’t always gadgets, but rather the invisible bonds 62 (create) through daily interactions.

七、书面表达
79.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My closest neighbor, Mrs. Harrington, was mysterious. From the moment I moved into the neighborhood, she had been distant, almost to the point of being rude. She avoided eye contact and brushed off any attempts at conversation.
Every day, she would head to the old shack (棚屋) 20 feet away from her house at 9 a. m. and again at 9 p. m. She always had two shopping bags in hand, and she would go into the shack for about 20 minutes before returning to her house.
One afternoon, while I was out for a walk, I accidentally approached the shack. The moment Mrs. Harrington saw me approaching, she dashed out of the door, her eyes wide with anger. “Stay away! I'll call the police!” she screamed, her voice high-pitched and desperate.
Astonished, I began to apologize and wanted to clarify that I hadn’t meant to intrude (闯入), but Mrs. Harrington cut me off with another sharp outburst, demanding that I leave immediately. The unfriendliness in her tone made it clear that arguing would be useless. I turned and walked back home. The way Mrs. Harrington screamed at me and the panic in her eyes didn’t feel right. I decided to investigate.
One night, I slipped out of my front door when she was back inside her house and all the lights were off. Reaching the shack, I noticed there was a large padlock on the door. I took a closer look and spotted a small gap in the wooden door, just big enough to peek through. I hesitated for a moment but finally pressed my nose against the door and peeked inside through the gap.
The inside was dark, but as my eyes adjusted, I nearly fainted at what I saw. Inside the shack were dozens of dogs and they were nothing more than skin and bones! What was going on here Were they being mistreated by her I started pulling at the lock, trying to force it open. Suddenly, a light flicked on inside Mrs. Harrington’s house. I froze, realizing that I’d woken her up.

Over the next few days, I developed a cough and a high temperature. Though I did not lose my sense of smell, my doctor advised me to stay at home and have friends bring food over for me. In all, I spent a whole week in bed. I was so tired and slept most of the time. Eventually, I got sick of the sight of my bedroom. So for the last couple days of my illness, I moved downstairs to the sofa in the living room so I could watch TV.
I was very thankful because I had had the vaccination. I felt terrible but I knew it would have been a lot worse. Without the vaccination I could have ended up in hospital.

More importantly, the process does not require poisonous solvents (溶剂), expensive materials or extreme conditions, making it practical for everyday applications.(现在,西北大学的化学家们已经开发出一种新的催化剂,可以在几分钟内快速、清洁、完全地分解尼龙-6,而且不会产生有害的副产物。更重要的是,该工艺不需要有毒溶剂,昂贵的材料或极端条件,使其在日常应用中实用)”可知,这种新型催化剂是生态友好型的。故选A项。
31.主旨大意题。根据第四段中“To bypass these issues, the researchers looked to a novel catalyst already developed in the lab of Tobin Marks, the leader of the research. The catalyst takes advantage of yttrium — an inexpensive Earth-abundant metal. When the team heated Nylon-6 samples to melting temperatures and applied the catalyst without a solvent, the plastic fell apart — returning to its original building blocks without leaving byproducts behind. In experiments, Marks and his team were able to recover 99% of plastics’ original building blocks.(为了绕过这些问题,研究人员寻找了这项研究的领导者Tobin Marks实验室已经开发的一种新型催化剂。这种催化剂利用了钇——一种廉价的地球丰产金属。当该团队将尼龙-6样品加热到熔化温度,并在没有溶剂的情况下使用催化剂时,塑料会散开——回到原来的结构块,而不会留下副产品。在实验中,马克斯和他的团队能够回收99%的塑料原材料)”可知,本段主要讲了实验过程。故选D项
32.主旨大意题。根据第二段“Now, Northwestern University chemists have developed a new catalyst (催化剂) that quickly, cleanly and completely breaks down Nylon-6 in a matter of minutes — without generating harmful byproducts.(现在,西北大学的化学家们已经开发出一种新的催化剂,可以在几分钟内快速、清洁、完全地分解尼龙-6,而且不会产生有害的副产物)”以及纵观全文可知,本文主要讲述了科学家已经开发出一种新的生态友好型催化剂,可以快速降解尼龙-6,即网、地毯和衣服里面的塑料,所以B项“New Catalyst Found to Degrade Plastics.(发现可降解塑料的新催化剂)”是本文最好的标题。故选B项。

My anger flared, pushing aside my fear. I steeled myself to confront this cruel animal abuser. “Good thing I came — who knows how long you'd have kept abusing those dogs! I’m calling the police!” I yelled back, my voice trembling with fury. She froze, confusion and disbelief flashing across her face, “I didn’t abuse them. I’ve been trying to save them.”

That day, we were no longer strangers— we were allies in kindness.
