Simon took as much time as he could pulling on his snow trousers and boots, zipping up his
jacket, and finding his helmet and gloves. His brother Gabe paced the front hall. “Let’s go!”
The brothers walked to the park, the sleds (雪橇 ) bouncing against their snow pants. Swish,
swish, swish. Simon could see the sledding hill ahead of them. To him, it looked more like a
sledding mountain. It was so high that the park district had built wooden steps into the slope to help
sledders climb back up. Kids were taking turns on sleds, screaming all the way down. Simon
couldn’t tell if their cries meant they were happy or terrified. Yet he knew which one he felt.
Gabe was taking the steps two at a time. “Come on!” he called to Simon. Simon stared up. He
was both sweating and freezing, his stomach knotted like a pretzel. Should he turn back But the
line of kids on the steps behind him meant he had to keep climbing.
At the top his brother stopped and looked at Simon. “Do you want me to go down with you ”
he asked. Knowing Gabe wanted to fly down the sledding hill without his little brother, Simon took
a deep breath. “I’m going. By myself.”
“Good for you, Simon,” Gabe said.
Simon sat crossed-legged on the sled and gripped (紧握) the plastic handles on each side. His
heart was doing leapfrogs. Gabe gave him a small nudge on his back. Suddenly, he was dashing
down the hill like a wild penguin. The wind whooshed. The cold stung. He had the handles in a
death grip when the sled swung around and sent him flying down the hill backward. BACKWARD!
He couldn’t stop. Faster and faster he went. He couldn’t even scream. Was he going to crash Why
had he thought this was a good idea
英语试题 第 4页 /共 11页

and lay on his back, breathing hard.

Simon grinned, “Again ”

Step aside, blue collar. And white collar, pink collar and green collar. There’s a new collar in
town. “New collar” jobs are those that require advanced skills but not necessarily advanced degrees,
especially in emerging high-tech fields like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, electric vehicles
and robotics.
There are real fears that workers will lose jobs to technology, especially artificial intelligence,
in the coming years. But “new collar” optimists think in a more positive way: There are also real
opportunities ahead for skilled workers who know how to handle machines.
“Somebody has to program, monitor and maintain those robots,” said Sarah Boisvert, the
founder of the New-Collar Network.
Even if millions of high-tech jobs are created in the coming years, the impact on workers who
lose jobs may be significant. For many Americans without four-year college degrees, according to
census data, the new job market will require training.
英语试题 第 5页 /共 11页
Ginni Rometty, a former chief executive of IBM, is believed to have created a “new collar” in
2016. At the time, she said, IBM was having trouble filling cybersecurity jobs, partly because
outdated criteria required that candidates have college degrees.
“Due to our high qualifications in these online jobs, we overlooked a large number of qualified
and available candidates,” she wrote in an email. “Unless millions of people are trained in the skills
employers need now,” she added, “they risk being unemployed even as millions of good-paying
jobs go unfilled.”
Christopher M. Cox, a researcher who has written about the new-collar economy, said, “The
alternative model of four-year universities is really great.” However, he added that “new collar”
may also be a clever term that relieves the anxiety of workers by defining the constantly changing
labor market and technology companies as more ideal rather than “terminators” (终结者).
28. What does “new collar” mean
A. People engaged in cybersecurity.
B. People working at electric vehicles.
C. People closely connected with artificial intelligence.
D. People with advanced skills regardless of degrees.
29. What made IBM’s cybersecurity jobs unfilled
A. Much stress. B. Low salaries.
C. High qualifications. D. Few candidates.
30. What is the benefit of the “new collar” economy to the society
A. It gives more opportunities to the workers.
B. It helps artificial intelligence develop better.
C. It rebuilds the confidence of the white collar.
D. It changes the system of technology companies.
31. What is the purpose of the text
A. To explain the anxiety of workers.
B. To state the electric vehicle industry.
C. To emphasize the college education.
D. To introduce the new-collar phenomenon.

While concerns about “digital dementia”—the potential for technology to harm memory and
thinking skills—have grown, new research suggests smart phones and computers might actually
help protect older adults’ cognitive health, the ability to think clearly, learn effectively, remember
information and make decisions, all of which are essential for maintaining independence and overall
mental well-being.
A comprehensive review of 57 studies involving over 411,000 adults, whose average age was
sixty-eight, revealed surprising findings. Older individuals who regularly used digital devices
英语试题 第 6页 /共 11页
showed a 42% lower risk of cognitive decline compared to non-users. The research examined
various technologies including smart phones, computers, social media, and email.
Scientists propose several explanations for this protective effect. First, technology use, like
texting, browsing, video calls, activates multiple brain regions, strengthening neural connections as
crossword puzzles do. Second, digital tools help maintain social connections, fighting loneliness
known to negatively impact cognitive health. “Technology engagement appears to offer both mental
exercise and social benefits,” noted Dr. Helen Zhou, the study’s lead author.
However, the study didn’t analyze specific usage patterns or duration. Additionally, since
participants adopted technology later in life, results may differ for lifelong users. “Further
comprehensive studies are required to establish the most effective ways of using digital tools for
preserving cognitive function,” scientists cautioned.
With approximately 10 million new dementia cases annually worldwide according to data from
WHO, these findings open promising avenues for prevention. In Japan, retirement homes using
tablet-based memory games report 30% slower cognitive decline. While not definitive, they
challenge assumptions about technology’s universal harm to aging minds and highlight its potential
as a tool for maintaining cognitive vitality in older populations.
32. Which factor contributes to the cognitive benefits that digital devices bring to the elderly
A. Improved dietary habits. B. Enhanced social connectivity.
C. Increased physical activity. D. Better sleep quality.
33. What limitation of the study is highlighted by the researchers
A. The study focused mainly on younger adults.
B. The sample size was too small to draw conclusions.
C. The study included only lifelong technology users.
D. It did not analyze specific usage patterns or duration.
34. What does the underlined word “avenues” refer to
A. Physical pathways. B. Research methods.
C. Potential approaches. D. Technological devices.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Digital Dementia Risks Outweigh Benefits
B. Study: Tech Use May Protect Elderly Brains
C. Social Media Harms Elderly Cognition
D. Exercise Better Than Tech for Brain Health

What color is a tree, or a sky, or a sunset At first glance, the answers seem obvious. 36
A lot of factors feed into how people perceive color, from the biology of our eyes to how our brains
英语试题 第 7页 /共 11页
process that information. There’s plenty of room for differences, all along the way.
For example, most people have three types of cone cell (视锥细胞)—light receptors in the eyes
that are responsible for detecting different wavelengths or colors of light. But sometimes, a genetic
variation can cause one type of cone to be different, or absent altogether, leading to changed color
vision. Some people possess color superpowers. 37
In science, conveying complex data is difficult. Often the most effective approach is to use
colored visualizations. But the detailed visual data presentations that are common in science often
fail to accommodate those with color blindness. 38 Imagine a climate change map showing
temperature variations through a gradient (梯度变化曲线)of colors. For those with color blindness,
these variations aren’t quite evident.
39 From astronomy to medicine, color-coded information is fundamental to convey
patterns, trends, and anomalies (异常事物). And the effects stretch far beyond mere inconvenience.
One researcher could misinterpret the data due to the rainbow color gradient. Or a physician could
give an incorrect explanation of a condition for the same reason.
What can we do to make scientific diagrams more accessible to all people 40 But
sometimes, color is king. “To be color-blind sensitive, avoid using red and green together. Use
contrast to ensure your text and background colors are easy to read. Also consider using symbols
instead of colored text labels for your data points,” explains one scientist.
A. Others may be color-blind.
B. Black and white are the safest option.
C. The design effectively helps them see the data.
D. But it turns out that everyone sees things differently.
E. And men are more frequently affected than women.
F. That’s to say, some information is invisible to them.
G. This circumstance extends to various scientific fields.

第二节 (满分 25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Recently I graduated from high school. The afternoon sun warmed my graduation cap as I
stared at the mountain of flowers crowding my room—bunches of flowers from family and friends,
forty to be exact! Roses, daisies, and lilies spilled across every surface, their sweet scent
overwhelming. “How will I ever...” My thought was interrupted by sudden giggles (咯咯笑).
Six-year-old Sue and seven-year-old Mike exploded into the room, eyes widening at the floral
jungle. “Auntie, are you opening a flower shop ” Mike asked, poking a sunflower taller than
himself. Sue pressed her nose into a pink rose, sneezing dramatically.
An idea bloomed. “Let’s give these to strangers!” I announced. The kids froze mid-giggle.
“Why ” Sue frowned. “To grow smiles,” I explained, showing them blank cards. “We’ll write nice
notes!” Cheerful creativity followed. Mike’s cards read “SMILE!!!” in colorful capitals, while Sue
drew rainbow hearts. We tied them to the flowers’ stems with ribbons.
Our first target stood at the park entrance—Officer Martinez, who was directing traffic, Sue
dashed forward. “Flower for you!” she shouted, stretching her tiny arm upward. The officer’s stern
face melted into a sunrise smile. “Made my day, kiddo,” he said, pinning the daisy to his uniform.
Next, we approached Mr. Thompson, our grumpy bus driver. “Flower for making our rides
safe!” Mike declared. The man’s coffee-stained mustache twitched. “Kids these days...” he muttered,
placing the lily carefully beside his timetable.
By noon, our basket neared empty. Thirty-eight flowers had found homes—a tired bus driver, a
lonely bench-sitter, a laughing child and so on. It was lunch time and we went to Subway for lunch.
There the kids gave a flower to the waitress, a girl with blue-streaked hair, who held her breath
when Sue offered the flower. “For me Nobody’s ever given me a flower!” Her voice cracked as she
tucked it behind her ear. As we were eating our lunch, the waitress came up to the kids with two big
chocolate cookies! “For the flower angels,” she grinned. The kids’ eyes lit brighter than their cookie
sprinkles. As they ate the cookies, “Best cookies ever!” Sue and Mike exclaimed with the biggest
smiles I had ever seen.

With just one flower left, I said it should be given to the person who needed it most. Just then,
my nephew caught sight of an old woman in a wheelchair nearby. “I think she’s the very person for
the flower. She lives a hard life because of bad health. She needs smiles most,” said my nephew.
With these words, my nephew, followed by my niece, took the flower up to her. You can imagine
how happy the old woman looked! She smiled, and gave each of the kids a big kiss. (74词)
It turned out to be a great day for us. We spread a lot of smiles by giving out flowers, and
received a lot of smiles in return. The flowers not only made us feel good about ourselves, but also
made 40 other people feel happy. I feel there is nothing more enjoyable than being friendly to
people. Meanwhile, the kids learned an important lesson in the process. In fact, they can’t wait until
next time they have such a chance again. They want to give out more flowers! (79词)

David
M: Yes. I do.
W: So do I. By the way, did you hear the weather forecast this morning
M: Yes. It said that ⑨it’s partly cloudy today with a strong wind from the northwest. The highest
temperature will be at least 3 below zero in the morning. But in the afternoon, it will rise a little.
W: Then the beautiful snow might melt away.

W: All right, students. ⑩Your homework for the weekend is to review Chapter 3 and to write a
summary of the most important ideas in the chapter. Next week, we’ll begin our presentations.
M: Excuse me, Ms. Diaz…
W: Yes
M: How long should our summary be
W: It should be one page, but no more than that. Also, remember that when you summarize a
chapter, you must leave your own opinion out.
M: Yes, ma’am. But there are many different views on the Civil War in American history. It is
difficult to summarize anything important without including my opinion at all.
W: A summary only includes the facts. You can use the author’s words directly, but you cannot
include your own ideas. For the homework, I just need to see if you understood the main
ideas in the chapter.
M: Should we try to connect these ideas to other things we read this term
W: No. You can do that next week when you give your presentation.

M: Here is the pill. I’ll help you stand up.
W: Can I have a walk around the room or corridor I have stayed in bed all day.
M: Yes, you can! It seems that feeling well again is not such a long process.
W: I have been in hospital for two weeks, haven’t I
M: Yes, and you can leave the hospital tomorrow!
W: Really I’m so happy.
M: I have written a certificate for you.
W: I’m eager to go home! Doctor, what should I do after I go home
M: I have two suggestions. First, avoid any mental stress and have enough rest. Secondly,
examinations should be done regularly.
W: I’m sure I will follow your advice.
M: Complete recovery will take a long time. So you must take care of yourself.
W: I want to thank all the doctors in charge. I’m very grateful to you all.
M: Don’t mention it! That is our duty!

M: Clara Barton was born on December 25th, 1821. When the Civil War began in 1861, she
heard of stories of wounded soldiers. She felt she needed to do something to help them, so she
urged people to donate bandages and medicine and delivered these supplies to the battlefield.
Clara didn’t stop helping when the war was over. She led a group to search for missing
soldiers. This group also worked to identify soldiers killed or missing. After four years of this
work, Clara moved to Switzerland, where she first learned about a group called the Red Cross.
This group worked to help people who were suffering during times of war. In 1873, Clara
returned to the United States. In 1881 she started an American branch of the Red Cross. She
served as its first president for over 20 years. As the result of Clara’s hard work and leadership,
the Red Cross grew. Today, it also helps people suffering as a result of earthquakes, fires, floods,
and other disasters. Clara Barton died on April 12, 1912, but her great contribution, the
American Red Cross, lives on.
