From Parkville to Arnwick: problems and solutions
Jo is fifteen and lives in Parkville. When Jo’s grandparents first came to Parkville, it was a quiet village.
They had a small house, close to fields and hills.
Parkville was near Arnwick, a city with a population of 10,000,000. People from Parkville moved to
Arnwick to find jobs. However, it was expensive to live in the city centre, so the government built flats outside the
centre. Soon, Parkville became part of Arnwick, and the population of Arnwick became even larger. It is very
crowded, and rubbish is also a problem.
Jo lives in one of those flats. But for her, going to school is a problem. The small local school in Parkville
closed down five years ago, and getting to the nearest school in Arnwick takes her an hour by bus. The traffic is
always bad, not to mention the air pollution.
Luckily, the government is making a great effort to solve Arnwick’s problems with better public services.
There will be more schools, so pupils won’t need to travel far. The government is reducing air pollution from
traffic. There will also be more local hospitals to meet the needs of the increasing population.

Unit 2 单元话题
A travel diary is one of the best ways to remember a long trip. Many small things that don’t seem important
when you’re writing often become very easy to remember later.
Start the habit of writing your travel diary every day. When you’re busy on a trip, you might forget to write.
You may say you’ll do it later, but that almost never happens. Spend a few minutes each day writing down your
memories. It doesn’t need to be long.
Use your down time for your travel diary. There’s a lot of time when you’re just sitting during a trip. You
can write a few sentences when you’re on a train, waiting for a plane, drying your clothes, or standing in line.
At first, write down the small details people often forget. These things include the date, where you are, who
you’re with, maybe even the weather and what you eat. After many years, when you read your diary, you’ll know
exactly what you did.
Don’t forget to write about h ow you felt. Listing facts is okay, but that’s not why you took the trip. A long
trip is a time to think carefully. These feelings will be easy to forget over time. Writing about your experiences
when you still remember them clearly is important.

I finally stopped fighting my lifelong love of traveling. I left my job to do it full time. I’ve been traveling
the world on my own since 2018. In the past years, I’ve been to 25 countries (if not for COVID-19, it would have
been at least 10 more!). Now I’d like to talk about my experience in New Zealand.
Of the two islands in New Zealand, I liked the North Island better. It was my first stop. When I was in
Wellington, I stayed in Karori. It only needs a 10-minute bus ride to the center. I got a beautiful view of the city
and went to a free museum. I learned about the city’s past there. Rotorua is also a good place. It is known for its
hot springs and mudbaths (泥浴). I had never heard of an acidic (酸性的) pool, but I found that it did help with
aches and pains. Then I spent half a day learning about Maori customs and starting with a village tour. After a
walk around the shops, I enjoyed a lot of corn cooked in their thermal baths (温泉浴).
After visiting the North Island, I went to the South Island. Lake Tekapo might be the most beautiful lake I
have ever seen. Its color in the sun forced me to sit down and enjoy. The night sky was wonderful, with a small
church for perfect photos. I had to say that the mutton here was really delicious. It was a pity that I ate it only
when I was about to leave the island.
All in all, I was lucky to experience the wonders of both islands and the culture. I started my blog, Heather

Wild koalas share their home with millions of people. That has created problems for the animals. Over the
past 200 years, humans have cut down forests to build homes and businesses. Koalas live in trees, and they also
depend on them for food. As a result , the koala population has become smaller and smaller. Fewer than200,000
koalas may be left in the wild today. In 1800, there were millions of them.
What’s worse, many koalas are hit by cars or attacked (攻击) by pet dogs every year. Luckily, there is a
place for them-the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital. The hospital treats about 250 koalas each year. The hospital
even has a special koala ambulance (救 护 车 ). Without the ambulance, people might try to pick up koalas
themselves. That’s a bad idea. Koalas may look cute, but they’re still wild animals. They might attack a person.
The hospital’s most important goal is to return the animals to the wild after they are healthy. That includes
baby koalas. But baby koalas can become dependent on the humans who care for them. That makes it hard for
them to live in the wild later on. So when baby koalas are almost grown, they enter a special yard. People aren’t
allowed in. The baby koalas learn to live together without humans.
As soon as they can live on their own, young koalas are taken to a wildlife sanctuary (野生动物保护区).
“We don’t leave them near towns,” explained Cheyne Flanagan, the director of the koala hospital. “That’s because
they might go into someone’s house and want to be picked up.”
1.What do koalas depend on for their food (1 word)
2.How many koalas are saved by the koala hospital every year (No more than 2 words)
3.Why is it a bad idea for humans to pick up koalas (No more than 6 words)
4.Is it hard for baby koalas to live in the wild after staying in the koala hospital (No more than 3 words)
5.Where are young koalas taken before they return to the wild (No more than 3 words)
【答案】1.Trees. 2.About 250. 3.Because they may attack people. 4.Yes, it is. 5.A wildlife
sanctuary.

World Kindness Day is celebrated every year on November 13th. It was started in 1998 by the World
Kindness Movement, a group that wants to make the world a better place through small acts of kindness. This
special day reminds people that everyone can do something kind, no matter how small.
The main purpose of World Kindness Day is to spread love and care. In today’s busy world, people

happier communities. It teaches us that kindness can connect people from different countries and cultures.

carry heavy things, give away clothes to the poor, or write thank-you notes to teachers. Some schools organize
activities like planting trees or cleaning parks. Even smiling at strangers or saying good morning counts as
kindness!

This is a story from a meeting held by some people and two things in nature. We call it the Four-Sided Talk.
Let’s “listen to” everyone carefully and find out what they think.
An old tree: I am thousands of years old, but I have fewer and fewer friends. I’m afraid I will be cut
someday. People cut down many trees to make paper and chopsticks. Soon there will be no trees to make air and
to protect people from floods. Mother nature is making many disasters to teach people a lesson.
The river: What the old tree said is right. I not only make the earth more beautiful, but provide the clean
water for people and animals. Now I’m sad because people put waste into me, which kills many animals and
plants that drink my water. Some people drink this kind of water and get sick, too.
People: We have lived on the earth since ancient times. The earth is our home. We have done some harm to
our home! From now on, we should make full use of the resources on the earth and protect the earth. Let’s try our
best!

The story of Arnwick is just a story, but it describes what is happening in the real world. With populations
rising, cities should try to create a more enjoyable, comfortable and convenient living environment.

Begins. You can find some advice on a journey in New Zealand there.
1.When did the writer start travelling the world by himself
2.Did the writer stay near the center of New Zealand
3.What can the springs and mudbaths at Rotorua help people with

For Wilson, the two most important things to take with him when he travels abroad are his passport and his
mobile phones. He books his plane tickets and hotel rooms through the Internet, and he enters all the information
into his mobile phone. “I don’t even need to print my tickets out any more,” says Wilson. “I can do everything
online.”
How people travel and go on holiday has changed a lot over the past years. Airlines, hotels, travel agencies
all have their own websites. People can plan and book their holidays in just a few clicks. Today everything is
easier, faster and smarter,
In fact, many people do not use guidebook any more. Instead, they go to travel websites for the maps and
information. These websites also let travellers write about and show photos of the sights, shops and restaurants
they went to. This means other people can read about their experiences and decide whether they want to visit these
places too. The Internet has made it easier for everyone to share their experiences and thoughts with each other.

They are normally young people who travel cheaply with just one rucksack (背包) and comfortable walking boots.

in Switzerland. Others may go skiing in the Rocky Mountains in the USA.
Have you ever heard of ecotourism (生态旅游) Ecotourists come close to nature but are very careful not to
damage (损害) the natural beauty or living things in the area. How can this be possible Let’s read an interview
with some people. They have just enjoyed a “swimming with dolphins” tour. Interviewer: What was the most
exciting part of your holiday
Sharon: I felt excited when I heard the sound of wild dolphins coming close to me in the water and then
swimming directly under me. I will never forget the experience.
Xavier: There were two dolphins below us swimming downwards. One stopped and looked back at me as if to
say “What are those strange beings ” Fantastic!
Interviewer: Did you feel that your holiday helped local people to keep their beautiful environment
Jane: Now the hotel and the whale and dolphin watching companies employ (雇用) local people. They used to
hunt those whales and dolphins, but now they can make money from tourism and don't have to kill them. Not
many boats are used at the same time, so these animals aren’t bothered (打扰). The boat companies also work to

“One of them came out of the bushes and ran towards me. He was just over a metre tall and very thin. I was
surprised by how beautiful and graceful he was.
“The little man came up to me and looked into my face. Then, he began laughing. I realized that he was not
even a little afraid of me. And I thought this was strange. He then spoke to another two little men. He did not use a
language I knew. By now, about ten of the little people were surrounding me. They began gently touching me, as
if to make sure that I was real. I was not at all afraid, though (不过)。
“To my surprise, they did not try to communicate with me, so I tried to communicate with them. I pointed
to the time machine and then to myself. I did not know how to communicate the idea of time travel, so I pointed to
the sun. Immediately, one of them made a noise like thunder and looked at me questioningly. ‘Did this mean,’ I
thought, ‘that he thought I was a visitor from the sun If he did, then these little people of the future were not very
clever.’ It was the kind of question a child would ask. I was very disappointed. ‘These people have nothing to
teach us,’ I thought.”

In South Korea, we give our friends sticky rice (糯米) cakes and taffies (太

World Kindness Day is celebrated every year on November 13th. It was started in 1998 by the World
Kindness Movement, a group that wants to make the world a better place through small acts of kindness. This
special day reminds people that everyone can do something kind, no matter how small.
The main purpose of World Kindness Day is to spread love and care. In today’s busy world, people
sometimes forget to be kind to others. This day encourages us to slow down, help those in need, and create
happier communities. It teaches us that kindness can connect people from different countries and cultures.
So far, 28 countries including the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, Nigeria, and the UAE (阿联酋)
have organized activities to celebrate World Kindness Day. On this day, organizations and individuals (个体) are
encouraged to reach out to others and perform acts of kindness. For example, they might help an elderly neighbor
carry heavy things, give away clothes to the poor, or write thank-you notes to teachers. Some schools organize
activities like planting trees or cleaning parks. Even smiling at strangers or saying good morning counts as
kindness!
World Kindness Day has a big influence. Studies show that being kind makes both the giver and the

Let’s try our
best!
The United Nations: We know a little about the environmental problems. Hearing what all of you said, we’
ve decided to protect the earth and love the earth. We’ve also made the June 5th World Environment Day.
1.What is the meeting called in the story
2.Why do people cut down a lot of trees
3.How long have people lived on the earth
4.How does nature teach people a lesson
5.What should we students do after reading this passage
