Have you ever wondered what happens to your old computers, MP3 players and cellphones when they stop
working or you want to upgrade to a new one
Many people simply throw them away. But did you know that people all over the world created a huge
amount of electronic waste, called e-waste They made 41.8 million tons of it, but only recycled 6.5 million tons.
That left 7.1 million tons of waste, and China was the second-largest producer with 6 million tons.

It’s important to be aware of e-waste because it can be both valuable and harmful. It’s like a hidden treasure
trove called an “urban mine” because it contains metals like gold, silver, iron and copper that are worth a lot of
money — over 322 billion yuan worldwide! These materials can be reused and help us save resources.
However, if we just throw away our electronics, they can release harmful chemicals into the soil and air.
This can harm the environment and make people sick.
So, what can we do to reduce e-waste One way is to buy electronic devices that last longer. When you
have old electronics you no longer need, like toys or old cellphones, you can give them to charity or find someone
who can use them.
Additionally, some companies offer recycling programs where you can get discounts when you trade in
your old devices for new ones. For example, Apple in China gives customers a discount if they bring in their used
devices when buying new ones. The company fixes up the old devices and sells them at lower prices, which is
great for both the environment and your wallet!
1.Why is it important to recycle e-waste
2.What is a bad effect of not recycling e-waste
3.We should buy cellphones that can be used for a long time, shouldn’t we
4.What does Apple in China offer customers as an incentive to recycle their old devices
5.What type of e-waste recycling method would you personally choose, and why
6.Which do you consider more when shopping: being environmentally friendly or the price Why
【答案】1.Because it contains valuable metals like gold, silver, iron and copper that can be reused, helping us
save natural resources. 2.Electronics can release harmful chemicals into the soil and air. 3.Yes, we

Climate conditions have a significant impact on people’s daily lives. Firstly, in hot weather, individuals
often feel uncomfortable and may experience heat exhaustion. As a result, many choose to stay in cool places and
avoid vigorous physical activities, leading to a decrease in overall activity levels. Additionally, hot weather can
influence eating habits, with people preferring light food.
On the other hand, cold weather can cause transportation issues. Snow and ice can affect roads and public
transport, leading to delays. During such times, many people choose to stay indoors. What’s more, cold climates
prompt individuals to wear heavier clothing, which can affect daily dressing choices.
Rainy days often lead people to avoid outdoor activities such as picnics, sports and gardening. Instead,
individuals tend to engage in indoor activities to avoid getting wet. In extreme weather conditions, like hurricanes
or heavy snowstorms, schools often cancel classes, particularly for children and the elderly, where safety becomes
a primary concern.

History of weather forecasting
Meteorology is the science of forecasting weather. Weather forecasting has been important to civilizations
for thousands of years. Developments in the 17th and 18th centuries made weather forecasting more accurate. The
17th century saw the invention of the thermometer, which measures temperature. In the 18th century, Sir Isaac
Newton was able to explain the complex physics of gravity, motion and thermodynamics. These principles guided
the science of meteorology into the modern age.
A weather station is simply a facility with tools and technology used to forecast the weather. Different
types of thermometers, barometers, and anemometers, which measure wind speed, are found at weather stations.
Weather stations may also have computer equipment that allows meteorologists to create detailed maps of weather
patterns, and technology that allows them to launch weather balloons.
If meteorologists knew more about how the atmosphere functions, they would be able to make more
accurate forecasts from day to day or even from week to week. Making such forecasts, however, would require
knowing the temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, humidity, precipitation, and cloudiness
at every point on the earth.
It is impossible for meteorologists to know all this, but they do have some tools that help them accurately
forecast weather for a day or two in advance. But because the atmosphere is constantly changing, detailed
forecasts for more than a week or two will never be possible. The weather is just too unpredictable.

At Kate’s school, they celebrated “Road Safety Week” recently. Every student attended an educational
lecture about street safety given by a police officer. Here’s a summary of the key points the officer shared.
Many car accidents can be avoided. They occur when passengers aren’t cautious. A big reason for these
accidents is driving too fast. If a car is speeding, it might not be able to stop in time when something unexpected
happens. It is important to be careful whether you’re crossing the street or walking on the sidewalk. Remember,
not just car drivers are responsible for accidents. Pedestrians (行人) and cyclists also share the duty. You should
never step into the street without checking both ways.
Do you like biking When you’re on your bike, it’s important not to make sudden moves without warning
others. For example, when you plan to turn left, always check for any car or motorcycle. Use your left hand to
show your turn and wait until it’s safe to go.
The rules we follow on the roads are actually quite easy. If we pay attention and follow them,we can
prevent accidents from happening.

It’s normal to wonder, “What if something goes wrong ” It’s important to recognize this thought and
manage it so that you don’t become overwhelmed (不知所措地) by worry. Thinking about the future is a common
part of life. Everyone sometimes imagines what might happen if things don’t go according to the plan: “What if I
make a mistake ” or “What if others laugh at me ” These “what-if” worries usually focus on negative (消极的)
outcomes. Spending too much time thinking about “what if” can make you hesitant (犹豫) to take action, and it
can also make it hard to focus on what you’re doing or listening to others.
There are various ways you can help yourself. Expert Angela McMillan suggests creating an “IF/THEN”
plan. “For example,” she says, “IF you need to speak in front of the class, THEN you can take three deep breaths
and remind yourself that you are prepared. Or, IF a social event is too noisy and you feel lost, THEN you can step
outside for a few minutes.” You can also identify your worries and then challenge them. Try to focus on what
could go right. For example, instead of thinking “What if I miss the ball when I try to kick it ” ask yourself,
“What if I score a goal ”
McMillan points out that most worries never actually happen. “Remember that they are just thoughts and
the bravest thing we can do is not let worry take control,” she says. Try to focus on what you’re currently doing,
whether it’s the book you’re reading, the TV show you’re watching, or the conversation you’re having. Getting
angry with yourself will only make you feel worse, so be kind to yourself. Think about how you would talk to a
friend who is feeling anxious—and then speak to yourself in that same way.
1.Spending too much time on “what-if” worries can make it difficult to focus, can’t it
2.What is a common reaction when people think about the future according to the passage
3.Who suggests creating an “IF/THEN” plan to manage worries, and can you give one example of such a plan
from the passage

Many people find ghosts and death scary, but some countries have festivals to celebrate these things.
In China, the Zhongyuan Festival, or the Ghost Festival, is celebrated on the 15th day of the seventh month
in the lunar calendar. On this day, families light lanterns to guide the spirits of the dead back home. However,
people often avoid going out at night during the festival, fearing that ghosts might harm them.
Both the Zhongyuan Festival and the Qingming Festival honour the dead, but they are different. During the
Zhongyuan Festival, all spirits are remembered, while the Qingming Festival is only for honouring one’s own
ancestors. People believe spirits return home during the Ghost Festival, but not during the Qingming Festival.
In Chinese culture, death is seen as a serious thing. However, in other cultures, death is sometimes viewed
differently.
In the United States, Halloween is a time to remember the dead, but it’s also a fun celebration with
costumes and trick-or-treating. In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is a time to connect with the dead through dolls
and stories, and there are even parties.
Whether we like it or not, death is a part of life. Understanding it can help us cherish our time and live our

Melissa Baidak, a visitor from Russia, was surprised when people started splashing water on her. At first,
she was a little scared, but soon she joined in and had a lot of fun. “It reminded (使想起) me of my childhood,”
she said with a smile.
Melissa is a doctoral student at Beijing Foreign Studies University. During her visit to Xishuangbanna, she

2.What is a common reaction when people think about the future according to the passage
3.Who suggests creating an “IF/THEN” plan to manage worries, and can you give one example of such a plan
from the passage
4.What does the passage recommend you do if you find yourself in a noisy social event and don’t know what to
do
5.How can you shift your focus when you start feeling worried according to the passage
6.Why does Angela McMillan suggest thinking about what could go right instead of focusing on what could go
