The Vanished Blue Diamond
In the middle of London, the city never sleeps, everyone went quiet as the lights got darker. The person in
charge of the auction (拍卖) hit the table with a small hammer, and the Blue Diamond, a gemstone (宝石) that

buy, but to make sure the precious stone was safe. He looked around the room, watching the excited faces and
people moving their hands.
The fight to buy the diamond was intense, but a man named Mr. Black, who wore a mask, won. The room

security but also left a clue that was so small, most people wouldn’t see it. But Jameson did.
As the sun started to come up, the Blue Diamond was found, safe and not hurt, hidden in the small hole in

Last week, I went to a restaurant for dinner. I recognized the face of the boy sitting at the table next to me. I
was sure I had seen him before, but couldn’t remember his name. Have you ever had an experience like that
Humans have a great ability to recognize faces. From movie stars to our relatives, friends and classmates,
we can actually remember the faces of a large number of people. The question is: How many faces a person can
remember at most
Humans are much better at recognizing faces than at remembering names. Early humans didn’t have
spoken language. They largely depended on their visual (视觉的) abilities to tell their family members from
strangers. As a result, our vision has developed to be one of our strongest senses. When we talk to others, we often
keep eye contact with them and look at their faces from time to time. Our brain takes in and stores their looks,
such as the color of their eyes and the shape of their mouth.
In a study, a group of people were tested on their facial memory abilities. They were asked to recall (回想)
the faces of all the people they knew about. Then, they were asked to identify their pictures. It turned out that
normal people were able to remember between 1,000 and 10,000 faces. The average was about 5,000.
Meanwhile, some people have much stronger facial memories than others. They are called super
recognizers. Remembering about 10,000 faces is the upper limit for a normal person, but these people may be able
to recall many thousands more different faces. Most people can only recognize about twenty percent of the faces
they have seen. Super recognizers, however, can remember up to 80 percent of them!

Choose the best answer (根据下列内容,选择恰当的答案)
You wrote to me about your problems. You dream of travelling, and you wonder how, as a teenager, you
can make it despite little support from your parents.
I understand that you are not very happy about taking the subjects that don’t interest you. You don’t think
you will ever need much of what you are studying right now. While some of your lessons may not seem directly
relevant to (相关) your needs at the moment, you are learning valuable study skills. You do need these skills to
analyse the world around you, to process information, and above all, to think for yourself. These exact skills will
help you overcome obstacles that stand between you and your travel dreams.
I say dream big but stay practical. However, it’s the practical part that most people miss. Even the most
pleasant life has its obstacles, but a setback won’t prevent you from reaching your dreams if you stay rooted in the
practical. The road in front of you will never be easy. Be prepared, chart a route ahead and then actually stick to it.
Of course, as a teen, you have some limitations when making your travel plans. Your parents have a say in
where and how you travel. The amount of money they can spend on your travel is also a factor. Cost will
determine your experience—whether you visit Europe, participate in a student exchange programme, or stay and
work to help with family finances.
Given the limitations that have shaped your life until now, I hope you will maintain your travel dreams. A
plan for travel acts like a silent ship running alongside your life as you take your first solo steps into the world. It
is there waiting for you, always inviting you to step on board. Travel was a goal I believed would finally signal
that I had made it through to the next chapter of my life. I made it there. You can, too.

My family and I had a buffet dinner at a hotel yesterday to celebrate my son’s birthday.
When we cut the cake, a band played the birthday song for us. A waitress gave my son a little
gift. He was so happy. It was a really nice experience!

Happy birthday to your son, Kerry! I did not have a good dining experience today. The man
who sat next to me was talking with his mouth full. His food flew out of his mouth to the table
and my plate! I think he’s really rude.

I have also met some people who had bad manners. For example, they coughed without
covering their mouths. Some of them put all their shopping bags on the chairs even when they
saw someone waiting. I think they should think more about others! When I see someone who
does something inappropriate at a restaurant, I usually ask the waiters for help. You guys may
try this next time.

While you are much safer inside than out, lightning can strike you even in the home. Here’s how to protect
you indoors:
Stay away from windows.
Get out of the shower or bath.
Don’t touch conductors such as fireplaces and metal pipes.
Cherry, was struck by lightning last year while washing her clothes. Lightning entered a window next to the
washing machine, struck her right hand, traveled through her body and finally out of her left arm.“It was as
though I was holding a bolt (电光) in my hands,” remembers Cherry.
Stay off the telephone.
It isn’t an old wives’ story—many people have been hurt through telephone lines. It was raining outside
while Peter Anderson was on the phone at his house in Florida. “Ban! A bolt hit the building,”he says,“I felt the
hair on my arms stand on end, and a lightning hit me through telephone.”
Unplug (拔掉插头) televisions, computers.
Don’t just turn them off. If the house is struck, they could be damaged if you keep them plugged in.
Try lightning rods (避雷针) if your area is very often hit by lightning.
Properly fixed, lightning rods reduce the chances of damage to a home and to the people inside it.
1.How many ways were mentioned to protect people indoors
A.5. B.6. C.7. D.8.

International Good Deeds (行为) Day was founded (创办) six years ago. “I founded this festival because I
believe that everyone can do a good deed for someone else, each in his or her own way.” Shari Arison, the owner
of Arison said. The festival calls for people to give back to others. In fact, as a student, you can also do your part
to spread love for Good Deeds Day. Here are some ideas for you.
* You can go through your books and pick out the ones you don’t want any longer. Give these books to a
free little library in your neighborhood. If you don’t have any nearby, organizing your own little library is a good
family project. You will need a bookshelf, some books and posters to get started.
* You can organize a donation drive (募捐活动). Collecting gently used toys can brighten the life of a sick
child. You can also collect household items for a homeless center.
* It’s also a great way to visit the elderly in nursing homes. You can bring homemade cards or baked food
to the elderly and spend happy hours with them. If you like music, you can play music or sing for them.

Most countries have medals for brave soldiers. But what about brave animals Many animals go to war:
horses, dogs, cows and pigeons, to name a few. Are there any awards for them
In fact, there is one. It’s called the Dickin Medal, and it’s given to animals who show bravery and devotion
to duty while serving with the armed forces (武装部队) or civil emergency services (民事紧急服务). The award
was created by and named after Maria Dickin in 1943. She had previously set up the People’s Dispensary for Sick
Animals (PDSA)-an organization that took care of injured animals. During the Second World War, many animals
were given the Dickin Medal, including one cat, three horses,18 dogs and 32 pigeons.
Pigeons You ask. Yes, pigeons. OK, they may seem unlikely to receive a bravery medal, but they were
very important to the war effort. During the Second World War, communications weren’t what they are today.
There was no internet, no-mail, no mobile phones and no satellites. So, on many occasions, soldiers had to use
homing pigeons to pass on messages. These pigeons are born with an ability to find their way home, even if they
are quite far away. During the war, homing pigeons were used to carry messages. These messages were usually
written on small pieces of paper and were tied to their legs.
One of the most famous pigeons to win the medal was Paddy. He was an Irish pigeon, and one of the first
pigeons to return to base out of hundreds launched. He was bringing news of the successful D-Day landings in
Normandy (诺曼底). He crossed the English Channel in just 4 hours and 5 minutes (a record).

Choose the best answer (根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案)
All through grade school, I got extra help with school work. If I got a D, I was very happy. If I got a
C-minus (C-), I had achieved greatness. A’s and B’s were a kingdom I could never enter.
Once my teacher Miss Mills had given me a list of ten spelling words. My mother and I went over the list
until I knew those words. I felt great. I thought. “Wow! This time, I’m going to pass.” The next day, I went into
the classroom and began to write down the words. The first word was “carpet”. I wrote that one down c-a-r-p-e-t. I
was feeling pretty confident. Then came the word “neighbor”—I wrote down the letter “n”. Then rhythm—I knew
there was an “r”. Suburban——I wrote “s-u-b”. My confidence failed me. I had gone from 100 percent to maybe a
D-minus. Where did the words go
Some people talk about information sliding off your brain. That was my life. I was an underachiever.
Now I know I have dyslexia (诵读困难症). A person with dyslexia might see “the” as “teh” and “bird” as
“brid”. My brain learns differently. A learning disability can really change the way you feel about yourself. Now I
know that even if I learn differently. I can still be filled with greatness.
Today when I visit schools as an actor, director, and co-author of children’s books, I tell children that
everyone has something special inside. It’s our job to find out what that is and get it out, and give it to the world
as a gift.

Ma Baoli is a pilot with the Dalian branch of China Southern Airlines, in Northeast China’s Liaoning
Province. He has won the name “poetic captain” for his passion for poems.
While flying over the Yellow River, he thinks of this verse: “① Do you not see the Yellow River come
from the sky, rush into the sea, and never come back ” Above the Yangtze River, he recites (吟诵): ② “Wave
after wave the Yangtze River roars east, sweeping away with it all our heroes.”
If conditions permit, he shares the poems with passengers via captains’ announcements. “It’s amazing! The
poets of ancient China could not have flown to such heights, and yet they wrote poems that perfectly described the
beauty of nature,” says Ma.
In early February, 2023, the 35-year-old won first place in the Chinese Poetry Conference, a popular
poetry-themed quiz show. This is the second time he has taken part in the show as a contestant since 2019.
For Ma, classical poetry, which has accompanied (陪伴) him since his childhood, is the most beautiful
language in the world. “I like reading poetry in my spare time. Once I pick up a book of poetry, I can’t put it
down—it’s a bit like those who can’t stop watching short videos on social media these days,” says Ma.
Ma was born in 1988 in a village in Pizhou, East China’s Jiangsu Province. His father, who worked hard to
feed the family through farming and fishing, used to paint on the white walls of their house and write poems to
match the paintings.
“I enjoyed watching my father do these things and listening to him recite poems. The poems encouraged
me to chase the dream of ‘reading ten thousand books and traveling ten thousand miles’, Ma recalls.

Detective Jameson, a man who was very smart and had sharp eyes that noticed everything, was there, not to
buy, but to make sure the precious stone was safe. He looked around the room, watching the excited faces and

The fight to buy the diamond was intense, but a man named Mr. Black, who wore a mask, won. The room

BRIGHTON COMMUNITY CENTRE
VISIT TO BLUE MEADOW FISH FARMWHAT Blue Meadow is one of the first enclosed fish farms in the
world. It is a floating structure about the size of two classrooms.
WHERE Located 5 km off Brighton Pier, the farm can produce 166,000 kilograms of fish a year. The fish are
housed in four large tanks. The fish raised include barramundi, red snapper, and grouper. They are mainly for
local use.
HOW The fish swim safely in separate tanks and are safe from threats like oil spills and harmful plants. The sea
water they live in is cleaned and filtered. Bacteria (细菌) and viruses are destroyed by ozonation. In this process,
oxygen is pumped into the tanks every hour.
“All these improved conditions make sure that the water quality remains high. This enables our fish to grow well.”

Another famous pigeon was G. I. Joe. He worked for the United States Army Pigeon service. G. I. Joe
saved the lives of the villagers and allied (同盟的) soldiers of the village of Calvi Veccia, Italy. The village had
been captured by allied soldiers. But the air force didn’t know this and was about to bomb (轰炸) it. G. I. Joe was
given a message to take, and it arrived just in time to avoid the bombing.
1.The Dickin Medal is an award given to ________.
A.brave and devoted soldiers B.brave and devoted animals
C.honest and diligent soldiers D.honest and diligent animals
2.Pigeons were important during the Second World War because ________.
