Why do people feel happier when the sun is out That is exactly the same question I asked many years ago when I was sitting on a nice sunny beach. I remember thinking, “Oh, tomorrow I need to fly back to rainy London. The terrible weather will make me unhappy.”
In fact, I did some research into whether (是否) sunshine does make us happier. I found that people may feel a bit unhappier in winter because the sunlight is not enough in the season.
Sunlight causes your body to produce the serotonin (血清素). It can affect (影响) your mood and your sleep. When you’re in the sun your body will make more serotonin. It will make you feel better and full of energy. However, many people who work indoors may not get enough sunlight. This is why getting outside in the sunshine is a great way to improve your mood.
Your skin produces Vitamin (维生素) D from sunlight, and this is important for strong bones and being healthy. From April to September, most people in the UK make enough Vitamin D from sunshine alone. In winter, however, you won’t get enough from sunshine. That is why the UK government recommends that everyone should try taking Vitamin D in autumn and winter.
Please remember that while sunlight are good for us in many ways, it’s also important to be safe in the sun. This means wearing a hat and sunglasses, and avoiding being in direct sunlight for too long. And never look at the Sun directly—that’s very dangerous.

Lots of snakes were washed onto the riverbank after the flood. Seeing these snakes getting burnt by the sun, teenaged Jadav Payeng was worried: What if this happens to people
Payeng turned his fears into planting a 550-hectare (公顷) forest in Majuli, Assam, India—one tree at a time.“I started planting trees in 1979. The elders told me if I wanted to prevent snakes from dying, I should plant the world’s tallest grass. I didn’t know then; they meant bamboo. They gave me 50 bamboo seeds and 25 young trees, and that’s how this began.”
Payeng knew that simply planting them didn’t mean it would come up and grow. The bamboo plants needed water. “I bought 50 pots (罐子), made holes in each and used them to water the plants. I would fill them up every five days.”
Soon, he was collecting seeds from the locals and planting them. “I have to thank all the help I have got from my village. The elders are so close to nature, and have so much knowledge. When I had difficulty keeping my trees healthy, they told me that red ants can help. This is the kind of useful knowledge we need to pass on to our young.”
Every day before the sun rises, Payeng (62 years old now) sets out for his forest. The forest is home to different plants and animals, including 1,000 deer, several kinds of birds and leopards (猎豹). It’s also a cover for rhinos (犀牛) during the yearly floods and an elephant corridor (通道).
Payeng is now working on a 200-hectare green cover, a project he started in 2011, with the help of the government. “This will be done in 20 years.” he says.

Feel down Go hug (拥抱) a tree! These days, many young Chinese people turn to trees to deal with stress (应对压力). They share stories online about how hugging a tree brings them calm feelings. They call it tree-hugging therapy (树疗).
In fact, tree-hugging therapy is nothing new. It was once a popular activity in countries like Finland and Iceland. People in Finland even hold the Tree Hugging World Championships at the end of August every year.
Hugging trees may sound a little strange, but there is science behind it, In 1984, The US scientist Edward Wilson pointed out that we’re born to love being around other living things. Our love of nature is “in our DNA”. Some studies also looked into why hugging trees can help with our health. A study in 2021 reported that the activity can help produce oxytocin (催产素). It has something to do with our moods (心情). A higher level (含量) of oxytocin can make people feel much calmer and happier. The activity of hugging trees is helpful to us, but it’s important to keep in mind that we shouldn’t harm nature while doing it. So, hug a tree just like how you hug a friend!
