Deltiology, or the study and collection of postcards, might be an unusual hobby, but that hasn’t stopped the efforts of Richmond’s Old Dominion Postcard Club to let people have appreciation for the old mailers.
For almost 50 years, the group has been a place for those who enjoy discussing the history and art of postcards. It’s an energetic social club consisting of about 60 members with diverse interests and backgrounds. “What really made me interested in the club was the people,” says Mike Uzel, club president. “You meet people from all walks of life in the club, anywhere from doctors to lawyers and anything in between.”
Apart from their monthly meetings at the Weinstein Jewish Community Center on Monument Avenue, the club keeps an active website at odpcc. org and hosts exhibits and talks at places around the region to help to know about the hobby. “Anyone is welcome to drop in and see what we do,” Uzel says.
Each November, they host the ODPCC Postcard & Paper Show. The 46-year-old celebration has been held at Chester’s Brightpoint Community College campus since 2013. The show attracts numerous people who have different needs, and booths (展位) are filled with thousands of postcards catering to all preferences. There’s even a display contest for the club’s members. They can pick from one of four design categories, including area views or greetings, and create a postcard exhibit.
Postcard collecting draws people for numerous reasons. One is the vast selection: No matter what your interest, there’s a postcard for it. For instance, Uzel often looks for cards from Czech Republic and Slovakia, in honor of his heritage.
Postcards and their preservation are equally important as legacy (遗赠) documents, remembering people, events and places from a bygone age. “When you see a building shown in a small town in Virginia, that may be the only picture of that building in existence,” Uzel says. “Postcards are a great way to hold history, art and cultures in your hands.”
4. What attracts Mike Uzel about the Old Dominion Postcard Club
A. Its old history. B. Its different visitors.
C. Its high-quality exhibits. D. Its excellent location.
5. Why does the Old Dominion Postcard Club hold exhibits and talks
A. To spread postcard collecting. B. To publicize its website.
C To develop people’s creativity. D. To train its club members.
6. What do the underlined words “catering to” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Expressing. B. Sharing. C. Satisfying. D. Gathering.
7. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text
A. To advertise a postcard exhibition. B. To remember a mail carrier.
C. To ask people to value the history. D. To introduce a unique hobby.

According to ABC News since Europeans settled Australia in 1788, more than 9,000insects have disappeared. Unfortunately, with the arrival of pesticides (杀虫剂) , this trend has increased over the past 30 to 40 years.
Clancy Lester, 23, a master’s student in biology, has loved nature documentaries since he was very young. This love of nature has led him to take a lead role in trying to save more than 2,000 native Australian bee-species. Clancy joined the First Nations, a group of people concerned about the reduction in their traditional honey harvests. What he learned led him to set up a website that teaches people how to create their own bee hotels.
Not all bees live in hives (蜂房) . In fact, many of them enjoy being alone, and they need places to shelter and lay their eggs. With a decrease in habitat, humans can step in by creating structures with multiple “rooms” to serve as a home for numerous species of bees. These are called bee hotels.
Clancy told Pursuit some nesting bees prefer materials such as bamboo reed. Ground nesting bees, however, prefer mixtures of sand and soil built into earth blocks to nest in. Some cities are using bee bricks to provide homes. But, no matter what type of bees, they all require morning sun and food resources, such as flowers nearby.
In addition to building homes for native bees, Clancy said making use of grassy natural spots around cities to help promote insect biodiversity is a good idea. “We could transform many of these areas we have everywhere into pollinated (授粉的) gardens and create habitats linking different parks,” he said.
Clancy’s work as the Bee Man shows that even small acts can make a huge difference. For a person, a bee hotel could be just a wood project of a few minutes, but for a bee it could be the continuation of a species.
8. What speeds up insect disappearance according to the text
A. Human settlement. B. Pesticide use.
C. The lack of food. D. The loss of hives.
9. Why did Clancy Lester create a website
A. To learn about bee hotels. B. To educate people about nature.
C. To film a documentary. D. To save native Australian bees.
10. What does the author mainly want to explain in paragraph 3
A. The ways to build hives. B. The reasons for protecting bees.
C. The meaning of bee hotels. D. The advantages of traditional hives.
11. What does Clancy suggest besides building bee hotels for native bees
A. Using grassy natural spots. B. Expanding city parks.
C. Building more gardens. D. Raising various insects.

Researchers at Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJI) developed a machine learning model that can predict (预测) the quality of tomatoes before they are harvested.
The study, published in the Computers and Electronics in Agriculture scientific journal, found a new method that could make harvesting tomatoes easier, more cost-effective and sustainable.
The HUJI researchers worked with researchers from Bar-Ilan University in Ramot Gan to use hyperspectral imaging (高光谱成像) to develop the learning model that showed a high level of prediction accuracy (准确).
This new method allows farmers to monitor quality parameters (参数) that include firmness and weight according to a press release from Hebrew University. “We did the research with the purpose of bridging the difference between advanced imaging technology, AI, and practical farming needs,” Dr. David Helman from the Hebrew University’s Robert H. Smith Faculty of Agriculture, Food, and Environment, said in the press release.
“This work has the potential to change quality monitoring not only in tomatoes but also in other crops. Our next step is to build a low-cost device (ToMAI-SENS) based on our model that will be used across the fruit value chain, from farms to consumers.”
With a growing world population and the need to grow 70 percent more food, using AI could go a long way in meeting the challenge. There are many uses for AI in agriculture from increasing crop output, automated weed control, as well as using satellites to predict droughts. There are even robot pickers that know which fruit is ready to pick.
An Israeli startup Tevel Aerobotics Technologies developed flying autonomous robots that can pick fruit. Founder and CEO Yaniv Maor used AI to teach the robots about each fruit, the trees, how to access the fruit, and how to pick it. The startup’s robots are picking pears in Israel and other fruits in Europe and the US.
The potential uses for AI in farming are growing quickly. All of these advancements will go a long way to feeding a hungry world.
12. What does the text say about the machine learning model
A. It is time-consuming. B. It is unpopular.
C. It is more accurate. D. It is low-cost.
13. What do the researchers aim to do
A. Connect AI to agricultural applications.
B. Help farmers plant the quality tomatoes.
C. Advance the quick development of robotics.
D. Widen the difference between AI and farming.
14. Why does the author mention the startup in paragraph 7
A. To praise several AI companies. B. To show the uses of AI in agriculture.
C. To honour the experts of robot pickers. D. To emphasize the challenges in using AI.
15. What could be a suitable title for the text
A. The History of Tomato Farming. B. Why Farming Is Important.
C. A Guide to Growing Tomatoes. D. How AI Is Reshaping Farming.

On a cold November morning in 2018, Alexis Agnew walked into the hospital for what she assumed would be a 20-minute physical.
The doctor told her, “Just some bloodwork and a quick scan (扫描检查).” But when the scan was going on, there seemed to be something wrong. “There’s an irregularity,” the doctor said and suggested she have a follow-up examination.
Alexis was afraid that she might have cancer. At 24, cancer had been an abstract thing —something that happened to other people’s grandparents. Now, it was a 50/50-coin toss in her body. She thought of her mother, a cancer survivor who’ d lost her hair to chemo (化疗). And because it was supposed to be a regular appointment, she hadn’t brought anyone with her. She left the exam room in tears.
As she exited the building, she passed by the front desk. An office employee was there, having her lunch. “She stopped me and asked, ‘What’s the matter, baby Are you OK ’” Alexis said. Such tenderness (亲切) made her cry even harder.
The office employee, whose name was Emma, looked at Alexis with genuine concern. “Hey, take a seat,” Emma said, pointing to a nearby chair. “Let’s talk.”
Alexis hesitated but then sat down. Patiently, Emma listened to Alexis explain what had just happened. Alexis told Emma her worries and fear. “After I had finished talking, she asked me if I wanted a hug. I just started crying harder. So she pulled me close and held me as I cried.” After the long-awaited hug, Alexis gradually calmed down. When she looked up at Emma with red eyes, Emma gave her a warm smile and said, “Honey, we don’t know for sure what this is yet. You’ve got to stay positive.”
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Then she shared her own experience of facing health scares.

【46题答案】
【答案】Dear Chris,
Last Friday, my school held a special cultural event called “I Love Paper-cutting” to celebrate the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival.
I created a traditional “Double Happiness” design, which is a symbol of luck and joy in Chinese culture. It took me three attempts to perfect the patterns! Our art teacher said this symbol was often used at Chinese weddings.
What fascinated me most was discovering how paper-cutting combines maths with artistic freedom. As I carefully folded and cut the red paper, I felt connected to centuries of Chinese craftsmanship.
Would you like to try this when you visit China I can teach you the basic techniques!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】Then she shared her own experience of facing health scares. She told Alexis about a time when she thought she had a serious illness but it turned out to be a false alarm. As they talked, Emma also offered practical advice. She suggested that Alexis make a list of questions to ask during the follow-up examination and even offered to accompany her if Alexis wanted. “I know it can be scary going through these things alone,” Emma said.
After listening to Emma’s experience and advice, Alexis felt much better. She was deeply touched by Emma’s kindness. Emma’s story was filled with hope, which slowly began to lift Alexis’s spirits. When it was time for Alexis to leave, she gave Emma a tight hug. “Thank you so much, Emma. You’ve been an angel to me today,” Alexis said with gratitude in her voice. Emma smiled, replying, “You’re welcome, dear. Just remember to stay strong and positive. No matter what comes your way, you should have the inner strength to overcome it.”
