For many, denim is a type of cloth, but for London-based artist Ian Berry, it’s a creative medium. For the last two decades, Berry has used the navy blue cloth to create various portraits (肖像), and even photorealistic descriptions of California. And his latest creation continues to reveal the unexpected and innovative ways denim can be used. Titled Secret Garden and currently on display at the Garden Museum in London, this work reimagines a peaceful setting with a fish pond, flowers, and plants — all made from recycled denim jeans.
The Secret Garden show was first exhibited at the Children’s Museum of the Arts in New York in 2017 and has since been displayed in various site-specific locations and galleries worldwide. Originally designed for a young audience, Berry aimed to inspire children to reflect on our interaction with nature.
“The idea came from thinking many kids don’t have their own gardens and thinking of community gardens located away in between buildings and trying to inspire them to seek them out,” Berry says. “It also gave the opportunity to talk about sustainability as well as helping young minds think about where things come from.” The artist even showed the kids a cotton plant to explain where jeans come from. “It was amazing to see so many confused at the idea,” he recalls. “It enabled educators to talk about how the show turned plants to pants, then back to plants again.”
While the most recent Secret Garden show isn’t specifically designed for children, it still arises a childlike sense of wonder. Visitors can walk through the denim garden path and find plants hanging above them. Various plants and flowers are described in shades of indigo (靛蓝植物), including roses, alocasias, begonias, and cacti. There’s even a peaceful pond at the heart of the garden, featuring denim Koi fish, and a central water feature. Every area of the garden showcases such an impressive level of detail that it’s easy to forget the entire show is handmade from denim.

Roads with variable speed limits, also known as smart motorways, are common in countries including the US, UK and Germany. Normally, rule-based systems monitor the number of vehicles on one of these roads and adjust speeds accordingly. One such road is a 27-kilometre section of the I-24 freeway near Nashville, Tennessee, which was experiencing a problem that disturbs many busy roads: When there are too many vehicles, phantom traffic jams (虚假交通堵塞) appear when drivers slow vehicles and risk crashes as fast-moving vehicles come up behind.
To address this, Daniel Work at Vanderbilt University in Nashville and his teammates trained an Al on historical traffic data to monitor cameras and make decisions on speed limits, using it in the I-24 control room in February. Initially, the AI was tested with the existing software — not having control over limits, but telling operators what it would have decided — and faced teething problems. “They look at it and for the first 5 minutes everybody’s like thumbs (拇指) up, and then they start going to thumbs midway and then it’s thumbs down. So hey, it failed in the first 10 minutes,” says Work.
After some adaptations, the team launched a new system in March that has been able to operate unaided ever since. The AI works 98 per cent of the time, and will occasionally call for a change in speed limit that is less than 10 miles per hour, in line with federal law.
“I think that we’re just scratching (划开) the surface of a whole new way to operate freeways,” says Work. “It’s just absolutely transformational how these systems operate. Anything that we can do to reduce the number of crashes that happen on that roadway, is worth doing. It is in desperate need of attention, and that’s what drove the whole project from the first place: heavy jams. Sitting by and doing nothing is not good for anybody.”

Astronomers have uncovered the feeding schedule of a supermassive black hole, revealing that it consumes material about every three and a half years. This discovery provides critical insights into the behavior of these universal forces, deepening scientists’ understanding of the powerful formations that shape the universe.
A team of astronomers used three space telescopes to make these observations, including NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, with findings published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters on Wednesday. The subject of this study was a supermassive black hole located at the centre of a galaxy (星系) about 860 million light-years from Earth.
With a mass of about 50 million times that of the Sun, this black hole was observed engaging in an interaction with a star too close to its immense gravitational pull. Astronomers first noticed the black hole’s activity when the galaxy it resides in experienced a significant increase in brightness in 2018. They identified this as a tidal disruption (中断) event, which occurs when a star is torn apart by the intense gravitational forces of a black hole.
As the star was pulled apart, its material heated up, producing X-ray and ultraviolet (紫外线的) light that was observed by the telescopes. This eventually faded, suggesting that the black hole had consumed the matter. However, astronomers were surprised when, about two years later, the X-ray and UV light from the galaxy flashed again. This unexpected phenomenon suggested that the star had been only partially consumed during its first encounter, with more material being taken away as it neared the black hole again.
“Initially, we thought this was a garden-variety case of a black hole totally pulling a star apart,” said Thomas Wevers from the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore. “But instead, the star appears to be living to die another day.”

He got the perfect opportunity to realize his desire but he was in a dilemma (困境) as for the competition he needed paints and some brushes but he didn’t had enough money for the same. He didn’t have the courage to ask his mother for money. In the evening when his mother returned from work he saw that his mother had a few bundles of notes and that money would be enough for him to buy those material.
The next morning when his mom woke up, the boy knocked at the door and came in. He begged his mother to give him some money and his mother had to give in. Then he headed towards his final destination, the place where the competition was being held.

In the summer holiday, I went to the countryside to see my grandparents. What surprises me most even today is the great changes for these peasants. In the past, they lived in humble farmhouses, with furniture covered by dust, but now they all live in two-story flats, in which there are more electric appliances with AI, even better than those in our city apartments. In the fields, former pieces of land are constructed into one vast field and big machines do most of the work with only a few mechanical workers. Instead, peasants go into the big city to do jobs such as landscape engineering, from which they become rich.
