(23-24八年级下·江苏淮安·期中)Great changes have taken place in family life because of science and industry (工业). In the past, when most Americans lived on farms, the typical (典型的) family had many children. In a farm family, parents and their children often lived with grandparents. Often too, uncles and aunts lived nearby. (24-25八年级下·江苏泰州·期中)I was careful to behave as well as possible, hoping the King would give me freedom early. Lilliputians soon began to lose their fear of me. They called me Man-Mountain. Sometimes I lay down and let them dance on my hand, and from time to time children came to play games in my hair. By now I was able to speak their language well.
One day the King invited me to watch their regular activities. I was most interested in the rope-dancing. A very thin rope was fixed (固定) about thirty centimeters above the ground. People who wanted to become the King’s officers jumped and danced on this rope, and who ever jumped highest without a miss got the best job. There was another interesting activity. The King held a stick in front of him, and moved it up and down from time to time. One by one, people came up to him and jumped over the stick or crawled (爬) under it. They went on jumping and crawling as the King moved the stick. The winner, who jumped and crawled for the longest time, received a blue ribbon (绶带) to wear round his waist. The second received a red ribbon, and the third got a green one. I had certainly never seen such activities in any of the countries I had visited before.

to help the Lilliputians in war till they win peace (和平)
to stay in Lilliput until the King allowed me to leave

As the present King and his officers are all Low-Heels, they refuse to speak to High-Heels. That’s the problem inside Lilliput. Besides, we’re getting information that the people of Blefusce are going to attack (攻击) us. Have you heard of Blefusce It’s an island very near us, almost as large and important as Lilliput. Living in China, I often see elderly people doing many fun activities. They practice tai chi, sing opera, dance, and even play with swords. These activities are usually done outside and help them stay active and social. I think this is great and wish it would happen in the UK more often.
My grandma lives in a nursing home in England. She plays bingo (宾果游戏) and sometimes listens to music, but she rarely does much outside or with others. This situation is usual for many of the UK’s elderly, as there isn’t a strong community that helps them stay socially active. There’s knitting (编织) and theater, but not much dancing in the parks or opera singing. Such outdoor group activities are just not part of the culture, and I think that’s a pity.
In China, elderly people stay active and social, which is good for their health. It’s also very cheap. A professor (教授) from the University of Chicago said that dancing in parks became popular in China in the 1990s. It helped women stay healthy and make friends, which is important for fighting loneliness in old age.
In the UK, many elderly people feel lonely. They don’t have many social activities, and this makes them feel isolated (孤独的). I hope the UK and other Western countries can learn from China. I want to see elderly people in the UK enjoying their later years, staying active, and being part of a healthy community.

4.What is the writer’s wish
A.Elderly people in China can have more activities.

(23-24八年级下·江苏南通·期末)Most people who move to a foreign country may experience a period of time when they feel very homesick and have a lot of worries. This feeling is often called “culture shock (冲击). It is important to understand it and learn what to do with it if you want to adapt to your new home’s culture successfully.
Generally speaking, there are four stages (阶段) that you will experience after you move to a foreign country. The first stage is usually called the “excitement” stage. When arriving in a new environment, you’ll be interested in the new culture. Everything will seem exciting and everyone will seem friendly.
But it won’t be long before you move from the “excitement” stage to the second stage. The excitement you felt before changes to worries. It seems that everything is difficult. The language is hard to learn, friends are difficult to make, and even simple things like shopping have become a difficult problem. It is at this “stress” stage that you may feel worried and homesick. This is the stage which is called “culture shock”.
However, culture shock doesn’t last for very long. If you are one of those who manage to get through it, you’ll move to the “recovery” stage. At this stage, you start to understand and accept the way things are done and the way people behave in your new environment.
The last stage is the “home” stage. This is the stage when you start to feel at home in the new culture. You start to learn from your new home and to like some ways of the new culture better.
Culture shock is common. Everyone in a new situation will go through it. Continue to be brave! And getting through culture shock will be a piece of cake.

(23-24八年级下·江苏淮安·期末)Environmentalists (环保人士) are getting more worried about the effects of fast fashion on the environment. Fast fashion is the production of clothes in a large number at a low cost. They are put in shops and online stores quickly to create a high demand. Manufacturers (制造商) make 100 billion all kinds of clothes every year. This is expected to grow 60 per cent by 2030.
The fast fashion business model is having a negative effect on the environment. Many of the clothes end up in dustbins and are not recycled. Another negative effect on the environment is caused by the chemicals used to make the clothes. These cause health problems to people working in clothes factories. It is reported that children make many of these clothes.
The way people are buying clothes is adding to the problem of clothing waste. Many years ago, people went to stores and tried clothes on. People took more time and thought more carefully before they bought clothes. They also wore them longer. Today, people order cheap clothes on the Internet and if they don’t like them, they send them back. Some people say this is causing a throwaway (用完即弃的) society. Some people buy clothes and never even wear them. The German media company Deutsche Welle wrote, “Every year in Europe, four million tons of clothing ends up in dustbins. Less than one per cent of this is recycled.”

There was another interesting activity. to be careful not to step on any Lilliputians or their animals
to help the Lilliputians in war till they win peace (和平)
to stay in Lilliput until the King allowed me to leave

As the present King and his officers are all Low-Heels, they refuse to speak to High-Heels. That’s the problem inside Lilliput. Besides, we’re getting information that the people of Blefusce are going to attack (攻击) us. Have you heard of Blefusce It’s an island very near us, almost as large and important as Lilliput. (24-25八年级下·江苏盐城·期中)Over one hundred years ago, there lived a man named Phileas Fogg. For many years, he led a very quiet life. He spent every day at his club, which was where rich men went to meet their friends.
Every morning, he left his house at exactly 11:30 and walked 576 steps to his club. Then he ate lunch. After lunch, Fogg read three newspapers from cover to cover. Then he ate supper. After that, he played cards with friends. At midnight, he went home to bed before doing exactly the same the next day.
But one Wednesday, everything changed. Fogg read some amazing news in his paper.
“Listen to this,” he announced (宣告) to his friends. “It says it’s possible to travel around the world in only eighty days!”
Although his friends had a laugh over that, Fogg was sure he could do it.
When one friend bet (打赌) that it couldn’t be done, Fogg replied, “I will bet twenty thousand pounds that I can go around the world in eighty days or less!”
Everyone thought he was crazy but Fogg had made up his mind. “I shall be back on December 21st,” he said.
As soon as he arrived home, Fogg asked Passepartout, his butler (男管家), to pack a small bag. Luckily, Passepartout moved very quickly.
In less than ten minutes, they were on their way to the station and at 8:45 exactly, the train pulled out, Fogg and Passepartout were off on their great adventure.
They were heading for the coast, where they could catch a boat to France. But they were also heading straight for trouble.
