I’m a junior middle school student in Anhui Province. I’m glad to tell you that our school has greatly changed in the past few years.
Our school has grown much larger than before. The government and our school have spent much on the school construction. They have built more teaching buildings and planted more trees. There is a beautiful garden in the south of the campus, where we can relax ourselves when we are free. They have moved the playground to the north. It looks very modern and full of sports equipment.
Now we have reduced our learning load. We are able to spare some time to enjoy ourselves in the library, reading what we are fond of. As a result, we are not only more aware of the outside world but also richer in knowledge. After school, a lot of students go to the playground to play basketball, football and other sports games. We can do everything we like at the weekend, such as drawing, singing and dancing.
Our teachers have got their teaching approaches (方法) improved. They create many games to make learning more interesting. As a result, we are studying much more actively. We all feel that we have performed much better.
Our headmaster and teachers tell us that we should be polite and helpful to each other. We are trying to create a friendly environment and offer help whenever someone is in trouble.

Kelsey writes her feelings about an adventure story and she shows great interest in the story. She opens her article with a quote (引言). It is a great way to begin a book review (评论).
“Brian Robeson was stopped and stricken with a white flash of horror, an adventure so horrible that his breathing his thinking, and his heart had nearly stopped.” This quote was from the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. It shows why this book was too good to put down.
Brian Robeson, an eleven-year-old boy, left his home in New York to go to Canada to see his father. He was on a plane (a two-person plane). It was in the middle of the Canadian forest when the pilot had a heart attack. Brian was trapped in the air. In fact, he had no real knowledge of how to fly a plane, but Brian had to make the BIGGEST decision of his life: whether to keep flying or just let the plane drop. If he let it drop, it meant that he was going to commit suicide.
I feel that the author of this book, Gary Paulsen, is trying to tell his readers, “If you believe in yourself, you can continue to live on your own.”
I really liked this book, because it sounded like that it could really happen. I enjoy books like that, and I’d like everyone to read this book. Also, as I said, it kept me reading. I couldn’t put it down until I found out what was going to happen to Brian.

Unit 5单元话题
American and British people both speak English of course. But sometimes it does not seem like the same language. In fact, there are some important differences between British English and American English.
First of all, they sound very different. Often, Americans don’t say each word separately. They say several words together. Americans may say “I dunno” instead of “I don’t know.” Or they may say “Whaddya say ” instead of “What did you say ” However, the British are more careful in their speech. They usually say all the words and keep them separate.
Sound is not only the difference between British English and American English. Words sometimes have different meanings too. Some American words are never used in England. The same thing is true of some British words in America. For example, the vocabulary for cars and driving is very different. Americans drive trucks, but in England people drive lorries.
Many expressions are also different in the two countries. In England, if you are going to telephone your friends, you “phone them up”. In America, you “give them a call”. When you are saying goodbye in England you might say “Cheerio!” In America you might say “See you later.”
There’re also some differences in grammar. For example, Americans usually use the helping verb “do” when they ask a question. They say “Do you have a storybook ” But the British often leave out the helping verb. They say “Have you a storybook ”
All these differences can be confusing (易混淆的) if you are learning English. But most languages are like this. Languages change over time. When people live in separate places, the languages change in different ways.

British English American English.
Sound The British are more 1 in their speech. They usually say all the words and 2 them separate. American people often say 3 words together. They don’t say each 4 separately.

Volunteering our time to help these people is a good way to spend our free time. Three teenagers offered to do some voluntary work during the school holidays. They wrote the following reports.
Betty
I did some voluntary work in a children’s hospital. The children there all suffer from serious illnesses. We organized a painting competition for them.
I met a girl called Cindy. She wanted to paint a picture of the park near her home. I went there and took some photos of it. Cindy used them for her painting.
Mark
There are many children without parents. I met some of these children with my mother. We taught them to tell stories. This helped them express their feelings. One child said, “My friends don’t understand my pain.”
We spent some time with a girl called Vivien. Her parents died in a car accident, and she is unhappy and very lonely. She needs friendship. My mother and I will continue to visit Vivien.
Annie
I wanted to help disabled children. They have difficulty walking or moving. I taught them to sing because music can bring them joy and peace.
I met a boy called Tim. He hurt his legs in an accident, but he had lots of courage (勇气). We need to help children like Tim and raise their spirits. I will continue to do voluntary work in the future.

Most of us have never thought about building an educational toy by ourselves. If we need a learning toy or something, we simply go to the nearest store and buy it. However, things are not as easy in third world countries. With families even having no food to put on the table, they will never think about buying educational toys.
So how can one get these kids interested in science This was a question that worried the Indian engineer Arvind Gupta so much that he decided to give up a good job and spend his life making toys from trash, things that people no longer want or need!
Mr Gupta began teaching in the 1970s. While still an engineering student at the Indian College of Technology, he volunteered to teach the children who were too poor to go to school. Upon graduation(毕业), he found a good job at India’s Tata Motors and spent the next five years designing cars.
But he soon realized that this was not something he wanted to do for the rest of his life. He thought he needed to receive some training, so he took a year’s training course and took part in the Hoshangabad Science Teaching Program which was to make science fun and exciting for poor children using available materials.
Mr Gupta found the whole project so satisfying that he decided to leave his high paying job and focus his attention on designing educational toys that were not only cheap and easy to build, but also full of scientific principles(科学原理), so that children could get interested in this interesting subject.
When the Internet started becoming a more widespread learning tool, Mr Gupta created a toys from Trash website and also recorded over 250 YouTube videos.
Today, over 50,000 children and teachers visit the website daily to download the videos for the toy creations based on cool science. Some young children have become so inspired(鼓舞) that they have even won international science competitions.
1 for making them ●Most people never think about building educational toys. ●Usually people go to a store to buy educational toys in need. ●To some poor families, buying educational toys is the 2 thing on the parents’ minds.
About Gupta ●He volunteered to teach the children who could hardly 3 to go to school when he was a student at college. ●It 4 him five years to design cars at India’s Tata Motors after leaving college. ●He thought it 5 to get some training so he took a year’s training course. ●He took part in a program. Its 6 was to make science interesting and exciting for poor children using available materials. ●He 7 his good job and devoted his life to making special toys.
About the website ●Toys from Trash is a website with over 250 YouTube videos. ● The website is 8 by many children and teachers daily. ● With the 9 of the website, children have chances to take part in international science competitions and win some prizes.
Conclusion What Mr Gupta does has made a big 10 to some poor children.

Chinese President Xi Jinping recently replied to a letter from volunteers in a community in Shanghai. They help with garbage sorting.
In his reply, Xi said he was happy to know that after recent years of publicity (推广), the volunteers’ community has made new progress in garbage sorting. He also hopes volunteers could encourage more people to develop the habit of sorting garbage.
Since 2019, more than 22, 000 garbage stations have been upgraded in Shanghai, according to the Shanghai Observer website. A huge change has taken place in the city in recent years: people once refused to sort garbage, but now they are actively joining in the activity. Garbage sorting has become a “new fashion”.
To promote the fashion, the community also makes use of technology in garbage sorting. There are special recycling machines besides the garbage cans. People scan the code on the machine, put in paper or clothes, and then get money from it.
“Sorting trash is a way to make the community a better place. It can benefit the residents. For example, house prices may go up,” said Cui Fenglin, 36, a representative of the Shanghai volunteers. He said many people changed their minds after this kind of “persuasion (劝说)” from volunteers.
Sixteen-year-old volunteer Yu Yue has made posters and written articles about garbage sorting. “My classmates and I even made an animation (动画) to help people understand how sorting trash can influence the environment.” Yu said.
In the future, the community will hold more events and work with local schools to promote a greener lifestyle, said Cui. By 2022, about 297 cities in China had fully implemented (实行) trash sorting, reported CCTV News. The whole country is going to implement trash sorting by the end of 2025, according to a national-level working conference held on May 23.

Birds are building their nests (巢) with rubbish, said a new study. The rubbish includes cigarette butts (烟头) and plastic bags.
A group of European scientists looked into about 35, 000 studies on bird nests. They found that birds have used man-made things in nests almost everywhere on Earth, not including Antarctica.
Some rubbish seems to be helpful. This is why birds like putting it in their nests. For example, cigarette butts have some chemicals (化学物质), so they can keep insects away and protect their babies. Plastic bags are useful in keeping the animals warm, and other hard things, such as paper cards, can make nests stronger.
However, in the end, human rubbish may only bring more harm to birds. The toxic (有毒的) chemicals in cigarettes hurt their babies. They may get sick or have shorter lives, according to a 2014 study.
To make matters worse, if the cigarette still burns when the bird brings it back to its home, it may set fire to the nest. Pieces of fishing net may also trap birds, and it’s impossible for them to get out by themselves. If their babies eat other kinds of rubbish by accident, they will also get hurt. Birds are feeling the bad effects (影响) of humans polluting the environment.
Nesting with danger
Introduction A study shows that birds are using rubbish to 1 their nests.
Rubbish items The rubbish includes cigarette butts, plastic bags and other hard things.
The reason for it The things made by humans are almost all over the world 2 Antarctica.
Uses of Rubbish * Cigarette butts can keep insects away and keep the chicks 3 . *Plastic bags can be 4 to keep the animals warm. *Paper cards can help birds have 5 nests.

阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词,每个空格只填1个单词。
Governments around the world are pushing for an end to plastic straws (吸管) and bags. More and more businesses are turning to paper products as a choice. As a kind of material, paper is widely considered to be greener than plastic. However, it may come as a surprise when we find out the truth.
Firstly, paper bags and straws are made from trees. Trees, as we all know, can reduce carbon dioxide (减少二氧化碳) levels in the air. They can slow down climate (气候) change. The use of more paper bags can lead to more acts of cutting down trees.
Secondly, products made of paper require more energy and water. About 10% more energy and four times more water are used to produce a paper bag than to make a plastic one. You might say that we can use recycled paper to save that energy and water. This seems to be a good idea. However, it takes even more energy and water to go through the recycling process than to make a brand-new paper bag.
Thirdly, paper products are heavier than plastic ones. That means they require more oil to transport. Seven trucks are needed to transport two million paper bags, while to transport the same number of plastic bags, one truck is enough. Once the bags are thrown away, the increased weight also leads to a large amount of waste.
So, paper products are actually a lose-lose for both the environment and businesses. They are harmful to our planet, as well as the plastic ones. Is there anything we can do to protect our planet
The most environment-friendly solution is to avoid single-use products. Products like glass bottles and steel straws can be reused easily. They are much more eco-friendly(对生态环境友好的) than either paper products or plastic ones. By increasing the usage of these products, we can greatly reduce the throw-away waste in our daily life and save more resources. If so, we can truly make our planet greener!
How to make our planet greener
Introduction It is not 1 that using paper instead of plastic will be greener.
Explanations: why using paper products isn’t a good way 2 more acts of cutting down trees. Trees can slow down climate change by 3 carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. Require more energy and water. * 4 a paper bag takes about 10% more energy and four times more water than a plastic one. *Making a brand-new paper bag takes 5 energy and water than going through the recycling process. Require more oil to transport *Transporting two million paper bags needs 6 times as many trucks as transporting the same number of plastic ones. *The increased weight also leads to much waste once we 7 the bags away.
Conclusion Paper products are actually a lose-lose for not only the environment but also businesses. Using 8 products does harm to environment, as well as plastic ones.
9 Avoiding single-use products is the most environment-friendly way. We can use products like glass water bottles and steel straws 10 of plastic ones. Reducing the throw-away waste can help save more resources.

Unit 4单元话题
