The classic 1951 science fiction film “The Day the Earth Stood Still” features a frightening robot (Gort) whose threatening actions are under control only when he is commanded, “Klaatubaradanikto”. What does this mean I don’t know. But when I overhear my students speaking to each other. I am often similarly confused.
I teach at a university. One of the “problems” is that as the years pass, I get older, but my students remain the same age—18 to 22. Early on, when I was in my 20s and 30s, this wasn’t an issue, as we were close enough in age to speak the same language. But lately I have become well aware that a language ship seems to have sailed, and I am not on board.
Let me explain. Recently, when I walked into my class, my students were chatting happily with each other. One of their comments caught my ear: “Venmo it to me.” I had no idea was “Venmo” meant, so I asked. The good-natured students were happy to explain it to me, and in return I nodded with an expression of silly embarrassment, as if I should have known better.
I went home that evening, absorbed in that moment of non-comprehension. I am not against change, but I am uncomfortable with change when its pace has me hanging on by my fingernails. If I were to awaken from a five-year nap, I’d have no idea what people were talking about. I just wouldn’t understand the language.
Their willingness to explain their words to me is a great comfort, and I congratulate myself on a least having the desire to know what they’re talking about, as well as on my ability—for the most part—to understand their explanations. But what will happen if my interest wanes and that the language ship finally disappears over the horizon The answer, to me, is clear: Klaatubaradanikto.
24. What did the author probably meet with
A. Hearing loss. B. Cultural shock.
C. A language barrier. D. A frightening robot.
25. What makes the author fall behind in language
A. Learning needs. B. Age difference.
C. Teaching loads. D. Language violence.
26. What does the author think of language change
A. It is unavoidable. B. It is really small.
C. It is very beneficial. D. It is much too rapid.
27. What does the underlined word “wanes” mean in the last paragraph
A. Declines. B. Grows. C. Happens. D. Maintains.
C
As new technologies take on increasingly humanlike qualities, there’s been a push to make them genderless (无性别的). “People are stereotyping (形成刻板印象) their gendered objects in very traditional ways,” says Ashley Martin, a Stanford professor. Removing gender from the picture altogether seems like a simple way to fix this. Yet as Martin has found in her work, gender is one of the basic ways people form connections with objects, particularly those designed with human characteristics.
In her study, Martin asked participants to rate their attachment to male, female, and genderless versions of a digital voice assistant and a self-driving car known as “Miuu.” It was found that gender increased users’ feelings of attachment to these devices and their interest in purchasing them. For example, participants said they would be less likely to buy a genderless voice assistant than versions with male or female voices.
While gendering a product may be good marketing, it may also strengthen harmful ideas about power and identity. The stereotypes commonly related to men, such as competitiveness and dominance, are more valued than those related to women. These qualities, in turn, are mapped onto products that have been considered to have a gender.
Martin’s study also found that creating a genderless object was difficult. For instance, if an object’s name was meant to sound genderless, like Miuu, participants would still attach a gender to it — they would assume Miuu was a “he” or “she.”
Martin sees a positive side, however: She believes that anthropomorphism (拟人化) “provides an opportunity to change stereotypes.” When women are put into positions of leadership like running companies, it reduces negative stereotypes about women. Similarly, anthropomorphized products could be created to take on stereotype-inconsistent (不一致的) roles — a male robot that assists with nursing or a female robot that helps do computing, for instance.
28. What is the purpose of making new technologies genderless
A. To reduce stereotypes.
B. To cut production costs.
C. To meet public demand.
D. To encourage competition.
29. What were the participants probably asked to do in the study
A. Design a product. B. Work as assistants.
C. Respond to a survey. D. Take a language test.
30. Why is it difficult to create genderless objects
A. Gender is rooted in people’s mind.
B. People assume they are unreliable.
C. Naming them is a challenging task.
D. They are not preferred by the market.
31. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. The quality of genderless products. B. The upside of gendering a product.
C. The meaning of anthropomorphism. D. The stereotypes of men and women.
D
The government of Singapore has created a highly developed system that turns wastewater into drinking water. The system involves a network of tunnels and high-technology treatment centers.
Reused wastewater can now meet 40 percent of Singapore’s water demand. Most of the water is used for microchip manufacturing centers and cooling systems in buildings. But some of it is added to the country’s drinking water supplies. The system helps reduce ocean pollution, as only a small amount of the treated water is sent into the sea.
Singapore, as an island nation, has long had to depend mostly on supplies from neighboring Malaysia. Low Pei Chin, chief engineer of the water reclamation department of the Public Utilities Board, told reporters with Independent, “Singapore lacks natural resources, and it is limited in space, which is why we are always looking for ways to explore water sources and stretch our water supply.”
The Changi Water Reclamation Plant on Singapore’s eastern coast is the main part of the country’s recycling system. Parts of the water treatment center are underground. Wastewater enters the center through a 48-kilometer tunnel that is linked to sewers (下水道). The center contains a large system of steel pipes, tubes, tanks, cleaning systems and other machinery. It can treat up to 900 million liters of wastewater a day.
Waste that arrives at the plant goes through a cleaning process before powerful pumps send it flowing to areas above ground for more treatment. There, the treated water receives additional cleaning. Bacteria and viruses are removed through highly developed cleaning processes.
Singapore is also in the process of expanding its recycling system. The country will add another underground tunnel and a major water treatment center to serve the western half of the island. Officials expect work on the center to be completed by 2025. By the time the expansion is finished, Singapore will have spent about $7.4 billion on its water treatment systems.
32. What can we know about the treated water
A. Most of it is sent into the sea. C. It is only used in the factories. B. It can meet the whole country’s water demand. D. Some of it can supply people with drinking water.
33. Why has Singapore always relied on its neighbor for most of its water supply
A. It is an island nation. C. It is short of water resources. B. Its people dislike using recycled water. D. Its water consumption is particularly high.
34. Which of the following is correct about the recycling of the wastewater
A. The water treatment center is underground.
B. Wastewater enters the center through 48 tanks.
C. Bacteria and viruses may be found in the treated water.
D. The treated water receives additional cleaning in the plant.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Singapore Turns Wastewater into Drinking Water
B. Singapore Builds a Strong Water-saving Culture
C. What Are Singapore’s Water Success and Lessons
D. How Singapore Is Putting a Stop to Water Running out

第二节 读后续写(满分25)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,构成一篇完整的短文。
When the swim season began, my 11-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, and I cut a deal. She would go to practise three times a week, and I wouldn’t make her compete in swim meets.
Elizabeth did not like swim meets. She got horribly nervous because she was afraid that she would do something wrong and let everyone down. She started to talk about quitting swimming, which broke my heart because she loved swimming. So I came up with the deal.
Recently, Elizabeth’s team announced a T-shirt relay (接力赛), which works like this: one person from each relay team puts on a T-shirt and a pair of socks and swims 50 meters. She takes off the clothes and socks and puts them on the next person, who then swims 50 meters. This continues until everyone on the team has completed a lap.
It wasn’t exactly a meet, because instead of having individuals compete with each other, it would only involve team members. But Elizabeth thought it was. I told Elizabeth I really wanted her to go. She fought back angrily but finally agreed.
When the day for the T-shirt relay arrived, Elizabeth was nervous. She was chosen to swim the anchor leg (最后一棒). By the last leg, Elizabeth’s team had built up a narrow lead. Then it was Elizabeth’s turn to swim.
Approaching the halfway mark, she was still in the lead. Then somebody noticed that one of Elizabeth’s socks had fallen off and was floating in the pool. “She has to get that sock on before the end of the race,” a swimming official told Elizabeth’s team, “or you will be disqualified (取消资格).”
Everybody on her team started shouting, “Elizabeth! Get the sock!” But she couldn’t hear them. Meanwhile, a girl in lane two was catching up with Elizabeth. Just then, my daughter turned her head and stopped suddenly. She grabbed the floating sock and tried her best to put it on again in a split second.

第二节(满分 25 分)
One possible version:
When the sock was finally on, Elizabeth was swimming for the last 15 meters. She kicked
hard, stretched her arms out as far as she could and determined not to let her team down. The crowd
cheered loudly as she approached the wall and she touched it just ahead of the girl in lane two.
Elizabeth’s team won the relay! Her teammates lifted her out of the pool and she was smiling from
ear to ear, proud of herself and her team.
On the ride home, she recalled that moment again and again. She told me how she had felt
when she saw the sock floating away and how scared she had been that her team would lose because
of her. But then she described the amazing feeling of putting the sock on once again in a few seconds
and the thrill of winning the race. “I can’t believe we won!” she exclaimed. “And I didn’t even want
to do it at first!” I smiled, knowing that sometimes the hardest things can turn out to be the most
rewarding.
