William Butler Yeats, a most famous Irish writer, was born in Dublin on June 13, 1865. His childhood lacked the harmony that was typical of a happy family. Later, Yeats shocked his family by saying that he remembered “little of childhood but its pain”. In fact, he inherited (继承) excellent taste in art from his family — both his father and his brother were painters. But he finally settled on literature, particularly drama and poetry.
Yeats had strong faith in the coming of new artistic movements. He set himself the fresh task in founding an Irish national theatre in the late 1890s. His early theatrical experiments, however, were not received favorably at the beginning. He didn’t lose heart, and finally enjoyed success in his poetical drama.
Compared with his dramatic works, Yeats’s poems attract much admiring notice. The subject matter includes love, nature, history, time and aging. Though Yeats generally relied on very traditional forms, he brought modern sensibility to them. As his literary life progressed, his poetry grew finer and richer, which led him to worldwide recognition.
He had not enjoyed a major public life since winning the Nobel Prize in 1923. Yet, he continued writing almost to the end of his life. Had Yeats stopped writing at age 40, he would probably now be valued as a minor poet, for there is no other example in literary history of a poet who produces his greatest works between the ages of 50 and 75. After Yeats’s Death in 1939, W. H. Auden wrote, among others, the following lines:
Earth, receive an honoured guest:
William Yeats is laid to rest.
Let the Irish vessel (船) lie
Emptied of its poetry.
4. Which of the following can describe Yeats’s family
A. It filled Yeats’s childhood with laughter. B. It was shocked by Yeats’s choice.
C. It was a typically wealthy family. D. It had an artistic atmosphere.
5. According to the passage, what do we know about Yeats’s life
A. Yeats founded the first Irish theater.
B. Yeats stuck to modern forms in his poetry.
C. Yeats began to produce his best works from the 1910s.
D. Yeats was not favored by the public until the 1923 Noble Prize.
6. What kind of feeling is expressed in W. H. Auden’s lines
A. Envy B. Sympathy C. Emptiness D. Admiration
7. What is the passage mainly about
A. Yeats’s literary achievements B. Yeats’s historical influence
C. Yeats’s artistic ambition D. Yeats’s national honor
C
The idea of turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing is not new. During the last five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into fabric to deal with plastic pollution. But there’s a problem with this method. Research now shows that microfibers could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea.
Dr. Mark Browne in Santa Barbara, California, has been studying plastic pollution and microfibers for 10 years now. He explains that every time synthetic clothes go into a washing machine, a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can’t collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine, microfibers are entering the sewers and finally end up in the sea.
In 2011, Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic(合成的) clothing can produce more than 1, 900 fibers per wash. Browne collected samples from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers.
This is bad news for a number of reasons. Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten. Studies have also shown that plastic can absorb other pollutants.
Based on this evidence, it may seem surprising that companies and organizations have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental “solution.” Even though the science has been around for a while, Browne explains that he’s had a difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked well-known clothing companies to support Benign by Design --- his research project that seeks to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market, Browne didn’t get a satisfying answer. Only one women’s clothing company, Eileen Fisher, offered Browne funding.
8. What has happened during the past five years
A. Fabric has become much stronger. B. Plastic pollution has been less serious.
C. Many plastic bottles have been reused. D. Microfibers have been greatly improved.
9. What does Browne think of washing synthetic clothes
A. It is adding microfibers to the clothes. B. It is worsening environmental problems.
C. It is making synthetic clothes last longer. D. It is doing great damage to washing machines.
10. What can be inferred about Browne’s Benign by Design research project
A. It has achieved great success. B. It hasn’t got anything done.
C. It is known to very few people. D. It is facing some difficulties.
11. What’s the best title for the text
A. It’s important to learn to recycle.
B. It’s never easy to solve pollution problems.
C. Recycled plastic clothing: solution or pollution
D. Are human beings moving forward or backward
D
In the world of online shopping, many online purchases are based on careful consideration of star ratings and product reviews left by complete strangers. But should you trust customer reviews when deciding what to purchase And do these mysterious reviewers have your best interests in mind Here’s what you need to know.
Consumers today are skeptical, says Zach Pardes at review platform Trustpilot. “We live in a time when trust is completely under attack,” Pardes says. “So people are reading reviews and consuming them more than ever before, but I think there is a healthy skepticism at times of what they’re reading. Fake reviews do exist. Fake reviews include, but aren’t limited to, robot-generated reviews and reviews that are influenced by the seller.”
Of course, not all user reviews you read online are fake. High-quality reviews are a valuable tool when making a variety of purchases. Pardes says Trustpilot features a team in place to detect and remove fake reviews. Perhaps one of the best-known review websites is Yelp. Yelp takes measures to ensure “high-quality content,” says Kathleen Liu, a company spokesperson. That includes allowing Yelp’s community of business owners and users to flag content that may go against the site’s terms of service.
Since user reviews do provide helpful information, review as a whole shouldn’t be repudiated. But how can you tell the difference between what’s real and what’s not It’s close to impossible for the everyday consumer. But if you conduct your investigation carefully, you can make an informed purchase.
Check more than one review source. Pardes advises consumers to read reviews on multiple platforms. “If you’re about to book a $10,000 vacation, you’d never rely only on the photos and the reviews posted by that hotel’s marketing team,” he says. “You are going to want to use a third-party independent resource.” Read more than a handful of reviews. Pardes says there is “safety in numbers.” Question perfection. Pardes says consumers shouldn’t trust reviews that show only five stars. “Nobody’s perfect so you can’t possibly have a perfect five-star review in every single category of your business.” he says.
12. What does Pardes imply about consumers in Paragraph2
A. They are often influenced by sellers. B. They must have long lost trust in sellers.
C. They often fail to recognize fake reviews. D. They should be cautious of product reviews.
13. What do Yelp and Trustpilot have in common
A. Both aim to offer real user reviews. B. Both produce robot-generated reviews.
C. Both hire professionals to give reviews. D. Both fine business owners for dishonesty.
14. What does the underlined word “repudiated” in Paragraph 4 mean
A. Advocated. B. Hidden. C. Dismissed. D. Blamed.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. How to get the most out of online reviews. B. Why consumers should check out reviews.
C. Where to find completely reliable reviews. D. When we can make an informed purchase.

A pleasant surprise
For a long time, I had been looking for a piano of my own to practise on. There was a piano shop on the street along which I walked every day to school. Whenever I passed the shop, I would stop, looking at the beautiful piano standing in the corner of the shop window. How I had been dreaming, day and night to possess a piano like that!
Unfortunately, my father was just a clerk. Times were tough during the Depression, and there were five mouths to feed, besides buying coal and wood for the stove. In order to save money, even on cold winter days, my father would walk the seven miles every day to get to work. No, he could never afford to buy me an expensive piano. Though he knew I wanted to play that piano so much, buying it was an extravagance (奢侈品) well beyond our family’s income.
One day after school, I went as usual to the shop window to look at the piano. However, to my surprise and disappointment, the piano had gone. I should not have been surprised as others had the right to buy it, if they could afford to. Tears filled my eyes when I thought of not being able to see that piano any more.
Disappointed, helpless and sad, I wandered aimlessly up and down the street. After about an hour, I returned home. I had just entered into our house, when I heard my mother calling me. I brushed away my tears and followed the sound of her voice into the dining-room.

第三部分 书面表达
第一节
Dear Kevin,
I’m glad you’re looking at Chinese sci-fi now. Chinese authors are leading a new golden age of science fiction, with writers like Liu Cixin, Hao Jingfang, and Chen Qiufan.
Translated and edited by master translator Ken Liu, Invisible Planets is a collection of Chinese sci-fi novels I’d like to recommend. It’s a great book filled with fascinating stories written by a long list of extraordinary authors. Folding Beijing, an incredible sci-fi story which made Hao Jingfang the first female Chinese author to win a Hugo Award, is also included.
I believe it’s worth your reading!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
I could not believe my eyes. The beautiful piano I had been longing for was standing there in front of me. Excitement and happiness filled my heart. I couldn’t help crying and tears streamed down my face. My mother approached me, saying they knew the piano was the very thing I had dreamed about and my father had tried everything possible to realize my dream. I was on the point of saying something when the door opened.
As soon as my father appeared, I hugged him tightly. “Thank you, Dad!” I said. I could see a big smile on his wrinkled face. Regardless of the bad weather, my father had gone to work every day to make money. I could not imagine how much effort he had made! My father kissed me on the forehead, whispering that he had at last earned enough to buy the piano. Only then did I realize that no gift could measure up to a father’s love.
