One sunny day, the staff members of a zoo gathered in a small meeting room. Their faces were filled with worry as they were facing a rather difficult problem - the kangaroos were found outside their cage (笼子) again. The head zookeeper, Mr. Brown, cleared his throat and said, “We’ve got to figure this out. How on earth are these kangaroos getting out ” After much discussion, they came to the conclusion that the cage was built too low. A staff member suggested, “Let’s raise (增加) the height of the cage from 1 to 2 meters. That should stop them!” Everyone nodded in approval, and that very afternoon, they got to work.
However, to their great surprise, the next day, the kangaroos were still at large, moving around the zoo as if they owned the place. Mr. Brown was shocked, “How is this possible ” Without hesitation, they decided to raise the cage to 3 meters.
But the following morning, the kangaroos were still freely going about. The staff members were alarmed. They were determined to go to all lengths and do everything possible to solve the problem, and this time, they decided to raise the cage to 10 meters.
Later, a giraffe, who was biting some leaves, struck up a conversation with some kangaroos. The giraffe, with a curious look in its eyes, asked, “Do you think they will go on raising your cage ” One of the kangaroos, with a naughty smile, replied, “Hard to say.
1.B 2.A 3.A 4.C 5.D
根据第一段中的“After much discussion, they came to the conclusion that the cage was built too low. A staff member suggested, ‘Let’s raise (增加) the height of the cage from 1 to 2 meters. That should stop them!’”
根据第三段中的“They were determined to go to all lengths and do everything possible to solve the problem, and this time, they decided to raise the cage to 10 meters.” 由此可推测,go to all lengths意为“竭尽全力,不遗余力”,与Try one’s best意思相近。故选A。
根据最后一段袋鼠的话“If they continue forgetting to close the cage door, they could raise it to a hundred meters, and we would still be out here having an excellent time!” 故选A。
My Favorite Chinese Traditional Story
Hello, everyone! My name is Li Ming. Of all the traditional Chinese stories, I like Yu Gong Moves the Mountains best.
Once upon a time, there was an old man called Yu Gong. There were two high mountains near his home. They were so high that it took him a long time to walk to the other side. So he decided to move the mountains. Yu Gong and his family began to move the mountains. They kept moving them day after day, year after year. Finally, a god was so moved that he sent another two gods to take the mountains away.
