I’m Liu Yang. I am a boy and I am 13 years old. I’d like to tell you about my life.

There is little doubt that house cats first developed naturally from ancient wild cats. The closest relative is the African wild cat which still lives in Africa today. This is understandable because the first house cats came from Africa.
Cats first started to live around people in Egypt about 6,000~7,000 years ago. From Egypt, cats started to move around the world. This is about the same time that Egyptians began storing grain in buildings. Scientists used to believe that people tamed (驯化) cats to catch mice and protect the grain. However, cats don’t like to be told what to do! Now, Scientists believe that cats followed the mice and learned to accept people. Finally, some of the cats began to grow comfortable around people. These were smaller cats that needed protection. As these cats and people got used to each other, then they moved in together. Around 5,000 years ago, cats started to live with people.
Soon cats were in Greece, then the Middle East and China. They moved along Egyptian business roads keeping away mice and keeping people around them. After the Romans came to Egypt, they also accepted the cats and brought them to Europe. These cats likely bred (繁殖) with other cats to form the many kinds of house cats we have today.
Cats are relatively recent house animals. House cats still have a lot in common with their wild relatives. Cats sleep a lot to save energy just like wild cats. They will often get food at night as well. House cats are generally peaceful and friendly, but be careful! If a cat feels it is in danger, it will fight back—just like a wild cat!

The Amazon is the world’s biggest rainforest. It is in South America. It is so wide that it covers a little more than the half size of China! The Amazon River runs through the rainforest. It’s the world’s second longest river. The Amazon covers much of Brazil. The green color on the national flag of Brazil stands for the rainforest.
However, climate change (气候变化) and human activities make it “sick”. Usually, the rainforest can fix itself. But now, it feels too “tired” to get better. According to a new study, many trees there may die, and the Amazon rainforest may turn into hot, dry grassland in a few years.
Why is the Amazon “sick”
The Amazon is one of the world’s wettest places. But since 2005, three droughts have hit the rainforest. They were caused by climate change. The trees don’t have enough water to grow. What’s worse, as they become dry, they can easily catch fire.
Besides, people cut down rainforest trees for wood. They burn the forest to make farmland. All these kind of activities made about 17% of the rainforest disappear.

The Amazon is like the lungs (肺) of our planet. The rich plants there take carbon dioxide (CO ) out of the air and make oxygen. They make more than 20% of the planet’s oxygen. If the Amazon “dies”, there will be more CO and our Earth will become even hotter.

The first thing you notice about Ushi Okushima is her laugh. It fills the room with joy. This rainy afternoon, she sits comfortably with her friends, Setsuko and Matsu Taira, cross-legged on a tatami mat drinking tea.
Ushi has recently taken a new job. She also tried to run away from home after an argument with her daughter, Kikue. Not long ago, she started wearing perfume (香水), too. When asked about the perfume, she jokes that she has a new boyfriend. Predictable behavior for a young woman, perhaps, but Ushi is 103.
With an average life expectancy of 78 years for men and 86 years for women, Okinawans are among the world’s longest-lived people. This is undoubtedly partly because of Okinawa’s warm and inviting climate and beautiful scenery. Senior (年长的) citizens living in these islands usually enjoy years free from disabilities (残障).
A lean diet of food grown on the island and the idea of moderation (适度) may also be the reasons. They eat until their stomachs are 80 percent full and they don’t eat fat from the meat. In fact, this healthy way of eating was born of hardship. Ushi Okushima grew up in a poor family; her family grew sweet potatoes, which were included in every meal. “We experienced terrible hunger during World War II,” Setsuko recalls.
Many older Okinawans belong to a moai, a support organization whose members give and receive help to and from the organization throughout life. Ikigai may be another key to their success. The word means “what makes one’s life worth living,” and it is something that is different for each person. “My ikigai is right here,” says Ushi with a slow sweep of her hand that points to her friends Setsuko and Matsu. “If they die, I will wonder why I am living.”
