Whether you’re an app hoarder (囤积者) or an app minimalist (极简主义者), here are some useful apps you may want to check out.
● Letterboxd
Letterboxd is a social network designed for movie fans. You can use it to record the movies you watch, rate or review movies and make movie lists (such as your favorite movies of the year). ● Feedly

Instead of having to visit many sites individually, you can just use one app to get all your news and information.
● 1 Second Everyday
1 Second Everyday is a paid app. The idea behind it is you record a one-second video of your life every day and use that to create a four-minute video of your year. While many people keep pets for joy and companionship, they often don’t think enough about the responsibility and emotional challenges that arise when their pets age or pass away.
A report shows that the number of aging pets in China is increasing. Dogs over seven years old now make up 23 percent of the total, a 5 percent rise from 2023. Experts predict that over 30 million pets in China will reach middle or old age in the next three years.
Veterinarian (兽医) He Qiming explained that as pets grow older, their physical health mon problems include dental diseases, cognitive issues and kidney problems. Elderly pets need regular checkups, proper nutrition and pain management.
“Taking care of an elderly pet often requires a lot of time and energy,” Chen Su, a 38-year-old woman working in the self-media industry, told New Weekly.
Chen, who lives alone, put all of her time toward caring for her 17-year-old paralyzed (瘫痪的) cat, Yuanbao. She canceled business trips, stayed home every day and even lost sleep to care for her pet. “I am grateful I could spend all my time with Yuanbao. I have no regrets,” she said. However, not everyone can make such sacrifices.
Money is also a major concern. A Xiaohongshu user shared that she spent 270,000 yuan on her cats as they aged. Another pet owner, Luo Sen, told New Weekly that he spends thousands of yuan every month on his old dog’s treatment.
Finally, dealing with the loss of one’s pet is extremely difficult. “I lost my soulmate dog three months ago. The physical and emotional pain is brutal. I miss him every minute,” said Conne, a pet owner, on BuzzFeed. In recent years, people have started using the term “pet loss syndrome” to describe this issue. According to PetDeparted, losing a pet can affect a person’s daily life and mental well-being, resulting in symptoms (症状) such as fatigue (疲劳), changes in appetite and trouble sleeping.
Caring for an aging pet is a serious responsibility and hard truth that every pet owner must face. That’s why it’s important to think things through and evaluate (评估) yourself and your situation before deciding to get a pet.
24. What is the main idea of paragraph 3
A. Challenges of caring for elderly pets.
B. Causes of health issues in elderly pets.
C. The significance of regular pet checkups.
D. Health problems elderly pets often face.
25. How did Chen Su feel about caring for her paralyzed cat
A Thankful. B. Regretful. C. Stressed. D. Unconcerned.
26. What does the word “brutal” underlined in paragraph 7 most probably mean
A. Avoidable. B. Manageable. C. Extremely tough. D. Very short-lived.
27. What is the author’s advice for those who want to raise a pet
A. Be fully prepared for the challenges of pet ownership.
B. Adopt a pet if you enjoy their company.
C. Appreciate the joy and companionship pets bring.
D. Avoid getting a pet because of the high costs.

Starting this fall, primary and middle school students in China will have at least one weekly course on labor (体力劳动) education, according to a new curriculum standard released by the Ministry of Education (MOE).
Labor education ranges from household chores to on-campus labor and community volunteer services, generally 3 types according to the new standards: the first refers to everyday chores, including cleaning, organizing, cooking, and using and maintaining home appliances ; next is productive labor, including agriculture, making traditional handicrafts, and applying new technologies such as 3D printing; the third type is service work, including volunteer work. The new curriculum also calls for a week of extra-curricular and off-campus activities designed for labor education once every school year.
A recent study showed that primary and middle school students in China only spend an average of 12 minutes a day on chores, compared to 72 minutes in the US, 42 minutes in South Korea and 30 minutes in France. Many countries start students’ labor education at a young age. Finland begins to develop students’ life skills in primary school. Spinning, woodworking, cooking and other craftsmanship classes are offered. In Germany, pupils have two labor classes per week. Electronics, office technology, sewing, housekeeping, and career guidance are all taught there.
Adding labor education was out of concern that the country’s youngsters do too little housework and look down on manual labor jobs. Due to great academic pressure, schools tend to put their academic curricula on the top, and parents sometimes see household chores as distractions. But, according to the MOE, labor education must be strengthened to help students develop social values, an interest in labor and finally an all-around development.
28. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The history of labor education.
B. The content of labor education.
C. The significance of labor education.
D. The future development of labor education.
29. What does labor education in Finland and Germany have in common
A. They start labor education in the middle school.
B. There are a wide variety of labor education courses.
C. It is viewed more important than academic learning.
D. Students spend more than 30 minutes on housework daily.
30. What is the purpose of adding labor education
A. To enrich the students’ off-campus life.
B. To improve the students’ performance on learning.
C. To help students achieve an all-around development.
D. To follow the education mode of some western countries.
31. What do we know about labor education in China
A. A week of extracurricular activities is a must every term.
B. Students decide whether to take the courses on their own.
C. Specially-designed courses have been applied for many years.
D. The school has to recognize the importance of labor education.
D
For more than a month, the US has been trying to sign a deal with Ukraine. Under this deal, the US will continue to provide Ukraine with military support in exchange for Ukraine’s mineral resources, especially the rare earths (稀土). So, why are rare earths so important
In fact, rare earths are neither rare nor earths. They are 17 silvery-white heavy metals. There are plenty of them in Earth’s crust (地壳). Some of them even exist in larger amounts than copper . However, it is difficult to extract (提取) them, as they tend to spread out in their ores (矿石). Getting purified rare earth metals requires processing a huge quantity of ores at great cost. That’s why people call them “rare”.
You might think you would only come across rare earths in your chemistry textbook, but they are part of your daily life. A typical example is their contributions to smartphones. Neodymium (钕), for example, plays an important role in making the tiny yet powerful magnets (磁铁) responsible for the vibrations (振动) in your phone. Elements like terbium (铽), on the other hand, are responsible for producing the bright and pretty colors for your screen.
Known as the “vitamins of modern industry”, rare earths are needed in many industries. In national defense, they are used to make things like precision-guided missiles (导弹) and night vision goggles (护目镜). For example, each US F-35 fighter jet contains about 417 kilograms of rare earths, reported The Washington Post. Rare earths are also key to making semiconductors (半导体). Being great at controlling conductivity (导电性), rare earths can help make semiconductors smaller and more efficient.
Rare earths are a strategic resource for every nation. China holds an absolute advantage in this area. Having over one-third of the global rare earth reserves, China uses advanced techniques for rare earth purification. It produced 70 percent of the world’s rare earths in 2024, according to Statista.

32. According to the article, what do we know about rare earths
A. They are rarer than other elements.
B. They are easy to get from ores.
C. They include common metals like copper.
D. They exist in large amounts on Earth.
33. What is one way rare earths are used in smartphones, according to the text
A. To make them lighter. B. To help them last longer.
C. To produce vivid colors. D. To improve their operating speed.
34. Why are rare earths called the “vitamins of modern industry”
A. They are widely used in national defense construction.
B. They are vital for modern technologies.
C. They improve weapon efficiency.
D. They serve as basic industrial materials.
35. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. China’s strengths in rare earth resources.
B. China’s techniques for rare earth purification.
C. China’s plans for rare earth development.
D. China’s contributions to the global rare earth market.

Jenny was the only child in her home. She had a quarrel (争吵) with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn’t help weeping (哭泣) sorrowfully when she thought of the scolding (责备) from her mother. Having wandered (闲逛) aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat, but it was not even possible for her, since she had nothing with her. She stood beside a stand (摊位) for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles ”
“Oh, yes… but I don’t have money on me” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,”said the man, “come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently. “What is it ” asked the man kindly. “Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny as she wiped her tears, “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother, drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless (无情的) compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled “Girl, do you really think so I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you Have you expressed your gratitude to her ”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb (呆滞的)with shock; she remembered mother’s familiar face and weathered (饱经风霜的) hands. “Why did I not think of that A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted (感激的;蒙恩的), but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”

W: Well, I know garbage sorting is meaningful and has far-reaching effects. But I often feel confused about how to sort garbage properly.
M: Yes. Most people face the same problem as you do. You can start by buying different colored bins for different kinds of garbage. For example, you can put kitchen waste into a green bin and recyclable waste into a blue bin, matching the colors of the bins in your neighborhood.
W: What about the red bin
M: That’s for harmful waste.
W: I see. I’m going to order some online then.

Approaching the doorway, Jenny took a deep breath. She could hear her own heart beating loudly in her ears. Her hand trembled slightly as she reached for the doorknob. As she entered, she saw her mother sitting in the dimly lit living room. Jenny walked slowly towards her, her steps heavy with guilt. “Mom,” she said softly, “I’m back. I’m so sorry for what I did. I was so blind and ungrateful. You’ve given me so much love and care all these years, and I repaid you with rudeness.”
A gentle touch on her hair called her mind back. Jenny looked into her mother’s eyes, which were filled with a mixture of relief and love. Her mother cupped her face in her hands and said, “My dear, I was so worried about you. I’m just glad you’re safe.” They hugged each other tightly. Jenny realized that this was the place where she truly belonged, and that her mother’s love was an unbreakable bond. From then on, she made it a point to be more patient and understanding with her mother, knowing that every moment spent with her was a precious gift. Because in the end, it was the love of family that could heal all wounds and make one whole again.
