①Have you ever visited any traditional Chinese gardens They look more like natural sights than some
Western gardens. They have a long history. In the past, there were two main types of gardens: imperial (皇家的)
gardens and private (私人的) gardens. Imperial gardens were for the use of the emperor and his family. Private
gardens were built by important officials or wealthy businessmen. Both types of gardens were mainly built for
hunting and resting.
②The Summer Palace in Beijing is China’s most famous imperial garden. It covers an area of about
3,000,000 m2. Kunming Lake takes up almost three-fourths of the garden’s total area. There are over 3,000
ancient buildings and a large number of plants in the garden. You can also see more than 40,000 valuable works
from each ancient period. With such a rich collection, the garden is known as the “Imperial Garden Museum”.
③As for private gardens, the most famous one is the Humble Administrator’s Garden (拙政园) in Suzhou.
It has an area of only 52,000 m2. It is quite small compared with imperial gardens, but it’s beautiful. When you are
standing in any corner of the garden, it all looks like a lifelike picture. And the whole garden looks different in
different seasons.
④The traditional Chinese gardens have been designed to look naturally formed. Mountains and waters,
trees and flowers, houses and towers are well-organized. They don’t look crowded together at all. In fact, Chinese
gardens are in some ways much like traditional Chinese landscape paintings. The two have influenced and
developed alongside one another. Both of them show the importance of nature in Chinese culture.

George Washington Carver was crazy about plants. When he was a child, he was known as the “plant
doctor”. He had a secret garden where he grew all kinds of plants. People would ask him for advice when their
plants were sick.
Later, when he was teaching at Tuskegee Institute, he put his plant skills to good use. In the 1890s, many
people in the south had been growing only cotton on their land. Cotton plants need most of the nutrients (营养) in
the soil (土壤) , so the soil becomes“worn out” after a few years. In the end, cotton will no longer grow on this
land.
This was especially bad for poor African American farmers. Carver decided to help those farmers. Carver
knew that certain plants put nutrients back into the soil. One of those plants is the peanut (花生) ! Carver thought
that if those farmers planted peanuts, the plants would help to restore their soil. Carver told the farmers to plant
cotton one year, and then the next year plant peanuts. It worked! The peanut plants grew and produced lots of

peanuts. The plants added enough nutrients to the soil to grow cotton the next year. Now the farmers had lots of
peanuts and no place to sell them. Again, Carver had a plan.
Carver invented all kinds of things made out of peanuts. He wrote down more than 300 uses for peanuts,
including peanut milk, peanut paper and peanut soap. He changed the history of agriculture (农业) in the south in
America.

News is all around us. People get news from almost everywhere. According to a recent study, 60% of
people read news on their smartphones, while 30% watch news on TV. 40% of them read news at least once an
hour, and 20% read newspapers every morning. Young people like to share and talk about news on social media
(社交媒体). It’s normal to feel a little upset when you see stories that seem worrying. There are things you can do
to help with your feelings.
It’s fun to learn about good stories, but bad news happens too. For example, reports about climate change
(气候变化) can make you feel upset. “Bad news isn’t nice to hear,” says Dr Aaron Balick. “It is normal to feel
worried about these things.” Studies also show that we remember bad news stories more easily and clearly. This is
called “negative bias” and scientists say people have it because it’s a very old way to keep us safe and away from
danger.
If you’re worried about a story you’ve seen on social media, for example, ask your parents or teachers to
help you find out if it’s true. Another way to deal with (应对) bad news is to put your worry into action. If you
find stories about climate change upset, believe that you can help. Everyone can do something to make our world

may help you understand where your feelings come from and why you feel this way.

There are over 3,000

standing in any corner of the garden, it all looks like a lifelike picture. And the whole garden looks different in
different seasons.

trees and flowers, houses and towers are well-organized. They don’t look crowded together at all. In fact, Chinese
gardens are in some ways much like traditional Chinese landscape paintings. The two have influenced and

He changed the history of agriculture (农业) in the south in
America.

It’s fun to learn about good stories, but bad news happens too. For example, reports about climate change
