(2025·合肥联考)Yuyuan Garden is the largest and most prestigious classic Chinese garden in Shanghai, boasting a history of more than 450 years.
The idea of building the garden was first conceived by Pan Yunduan in 1559.Pan was the son of Pan En, a minister of justice during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).The son decided to create a garden for his father shortly after he failed the imperial examination. The name “Yuyuan” carries the auspicious meanings of “peace” and “security”, reflecting Pan Yunduan’s heartfelt wish for his father’s wellbeing.
Pan picked the family’s vegetable garden in the northeast of the Old City of Shanghai as the site for the project. But soon after construction began, Pan was appointed chief secretary of remote Sichuan in southwest China. The garden was not completed until Pan returned to Shanghai nearly 20 years later.
But before Pan died, he had squandered (挥霍) most of his wealth and had to sell his lands and properties to make ends meet. His granddaughter’s husband inherited Yuyuan Garden.
Through the years, it changed hands several times and was used as the British army’s headquarters during the First Opium War (1840-1842) and the Small Swords Society during the Taiping Rebellion (1851-1864).It also suffered severe damage during these occupations and later was further ruined by Japanese invaders in 1942.It was not until the late 1950s that the garden was fully repaired by the Shanghai government.
Like other classic Chinese gardens, Yuyuan Garden — listed as a key historical site under state protection in 1982 — is known for its miniature (微型的) landscapes comprising ponds, rocks, trees and flowers. It also houses a variety of halls, pavilions, towers and bridges.
Moreover, Yuyuan Garden is connected to the City God Temple and Yuyuan Mart. The temple, market and garden are seamlessly integrated, combining temple activities, folk traditions, leisure, shopping, dining, sightseeing and cultural activities.

(2025·温州模拟)If the benefits of physical activity were made into a pill, everyone would want to take it.Studies show that moving improves nearly every aspect of health: boosting sleep, strength, and mental wellbeing.Still, most people don’t exercise nearly enough.According to data published in 2023, less than a third of US adults get the government-recommended amount of physical activity in their free time: at least 20 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per day, plus a couple of muscle-strengthening sessions each week.
Why is it so tough to get people to do something so good for them? Physical limitations, health problems and modern life are certainly factors for many people. But research suggests there’s another factor: our brains don’t want us to exercise. For most of human existence, people had to be physically active to carry out the basic functions of life, such as finding food.Humans evolved to tolerate a high level of activity — but also to conserve energy for when movement was unnecessary, explains Daniel Lieberman, a human evolutionary biologist.“As a society, we no longer move much in daily life, but the evolutionary instinct (本能) to conserve energy remains,” Lieberman says.“That voice ‘I don’t want to exercise,’ is completely normal and natural.”
Physical-activity researcher Matthieu Boisgontier demonstrated that phenomenon in a 2018 study. He gave people control of a digital avatar (化身) while they were connected to brain-activity monitors. They were instructed to move the avatar away from images of sedentary (久坐的) behavior that appeared on screen and toward images of physical activity. The study found that avoiding sedentary behavior took more brain power, suggesting that we have an “automatic tendency” to pick relaxing over moving.
That conclusion shows up repeatedly in research.Studies show, for example, that people consistently choose to take a lift instead of the stairs.“That natural instinct isn’t bad — it’s just that modern life gives us so many chances to give in to our preference for rest that we have reached an extreme that is no longer beneficial to our health,” Boisgontier says.
5.What do data published in 2023 suggest?( )
A.US adults have poor health awareness.
B.The recommended activities are impractical.
C.Most Americans lack sufficient physical activity.
D.Muscle-strengthening sessions deserve attention.
6.What makes people unwilling to exercise according to Lieberman?( )
A.The physical limitations. B.The basic structure of the brain.
C.The convenient modern life. D.The natural energy-saving tendency.
7.What does the underlined part “that phenomenon” in Paragraph 3 refer to?( )
A.Sedentary behavior took much brain power. B.Most people tend to avoid physical activity.
C.Humans evolved for a high level of activity. D.Brain-related activities attract modern people.
8.What is Boisgontier’s attitude toward people’s physical inactivity?( )
A.Doubtful. B.Reserved.
C.Approving. D.Opposed.

(2025·陕西部分学校适应性考试)Make me a chili pepper lover! People who often chow down on chili peppers may live for longer and have a significantly reduced risk of dying from cardiovascular disease (心血管疾病) or cancer, research from Cleveland Clinic’s Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute suggests.
Previous studies have found that capsaicin, the compound that gives chili peppers their characteristic kick, can have anti-inflammatory (消炎的), antioxidant, anti-cancer and blood-glucose regulating effects when eaten. To further investigate the effects of consuming chili peppers, the researchers gathered together the health and dietary records of more than 570,000 patients in the US, Italy, China and Iran, published in four previous large-scale scientific studies.
They found that those who ate chili peppers regularly had a 26% reduction in cardiovascular disease (CVD) death, a 23% relative reduction in cancer death, and a 25% relative reduction in all-cause death, compared to those who rarely or never ate them.
“We were surprised to find that in these previously published studies, regular consumption of chili pepper was associated with an overall risk reduction of all-cause, CVD and cancer mortality. It highlights that dietary factors may play an important role in overall health,” said senior author Dr.Bo Xu, a cardiologist at Cleveland Clinic’s Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute.
“The exact reasons and mechanisms that might explain our findings, though, are currently unknown,” he added.“Therefore, it is impossible to convincingly say that eating more chili pepper can prolong life and reduce deaths, especially from cardiovascular factors or cancer.More research, especially evidence from randomized controlled studies, is needed to confirm these new findings.”
Additionally, as the precise amount and type of chili pepper consumed varied across the four studies used in the research, it’s tricky to determine exactly how much and what type of chili peppers may provide the health benefits. However, the researchers are continuing to analyze the data in the hope of uncovering more concrete evidence.
9.What does the research reveal?( )
A.Chili peppers can cure heart diseases. B.People who love chili peppers live longer.
C.Eating hot peppers may be good for health. D.Some peppers have been used as medicine.
10.Why are data listed in Paragraph 3?( )
A.To correct misunderstandings. B.To clarify a concept.
C.To prove researchers’ ideas. D.To provide readers with the truth.
11.What is Dr.Bo Xu’s attitude toward the new findings?( )
A.Tolerant. B.Doubtful.
C.Objective. D.Dismissive.
12.What are the researchers planning to do according to the text?( )
A.Go on with the study to find more proofs. B.Conduct a large-scale clinical trials.
C.Discover more potential health benefits. D.Develop new nutrition dietary guidelines.

“security”, reflecting Pan Yunduan’s heartfelt wish for his father’s
wellbeing.
Pan picked the family’s vegetable garden in the northeast of the Old
City of Shanghai as the site for the project. But soon after construction
began, Pan was appointed chief secretary of remote Sichuan in southwest
China. The garden was not completed until Pan returned to Shanghai
nearly 20 years later.
But before Pan died, he had squandered(挥霍) most of his wealth
and had to sell his lands and properties to make ends meet. His
granddaughter’s husband inherited Yuyuan Garden.
Through the years, it changed hands several times and was used as
the British army’s headquarters during the First Opium War (1840-
1842) and the Small Swords Society during the Taiping Rebellion (1851
-1864).It also suffered severe damage during these occupations and
later was further ruined by Japanese invaders in 1942.It was not until the
late 1950s that the garden was fully repaired by the Shanghai government.
Like other classic Chinese gardens, Yuyuan Garden — listed as a
key historical site under state protection in 1982 — is known for its
miniature (微型的) landscapes comprising ponds, rocks, trees and
flowers. It also houses a variety of halls, pavilions, towers and bridges.
Moreover, Yuyuan Garden is connected to the City God Temple and
Yuyuan Mart. The temple, market and garden are seamlessly
integrated, combining temple activities, folk traditions, leisure,
shopping, dining, sightseeing and cultural activities.

(2025·温州模拟)If the benefits of physical activity were made into
a pill, everyone would want to take it.Studies show that moving
improves nearly every aspect of health: boosting sleep, strength, and
mental wellbeing.Still, most people don’t exercise nearly
enough.According to data published in 2023, less than a third of US
adults get the government-recommended amount of physical activity in
their free time: at least 20 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise
per day, plus a couple of muscle-strengthening sessions each week.
Why is it so tough to get people to do something so good for them?
Physical limitations, health problems and modern life are certainly
factors for many people. But research suggests there’s another factor:
our brains don’t want us to exercise. For most of human existence,
people had to be physically active to carry out the basic functions of life,
such as finding food.Humans evolved to tolerate a high level of activity —
but also to conserve energy for when movement was unnecessary,
explains Daniel Lieberman, a human evolutionary biologist.“
As a society, we no longer move much in daily life, but the
evolutionary instinct (本能) to conserve energy remains,”
Lieberman says.“That voice ‘I don’t want to exercise,’ is
completely normal and natural.” he says.
Physical-activity researcher Matthieu Boisgontier demonstrated that
phenomenon in a 2018 study. He gave people control of a digital avatar
(化身) while they were connected to brain-activity monitors. They were
instructed to move the avatar away from images of sedentary (久坐的)
behavior that appeared on screen and toward images of physical
activity. The study found that avoiding sedentary behavior took more brain
power, suggesting that we have an “automatic tendency” to pick
relaxing over moving.
That conclusion shows up repeatedly in research.Studies show, for
example, that people consistently choose to take a lift instead of the
stairs.“That natural instinct isn’t bad — it’s just that modern life gives
us so many chances to give in to our preference for rest that we have
reached an extreme that is no longer beneficial to our health,”
Boisgontier says.

(2025·陕西部分学校适应性考试)Make me a chili pepper lover!
People who often chow down on chili peppers may live for longer and
have a significantly reduced risk of dying from cardiovascular disease
(心血管疾病) or cancer, research from Cleveland Clinic’s Heart,
Vascular and Thoracic Institute suggests.
Previous studies have found that capsaicin, the compound that gives
chili peppers their characteristic kick, can have anti-inflammatory (消
炎的), antioxidant, anti-cancer and blood-glucose regulating effects
when eaten. To further investigate the effects of consuming chili peppers,
the researchers gathered together the health and dietary records of more
than 570,000 patients in the US, Italy, China and Iran, published in
four previous large-scale scientific studies.
They found that those who ate chili peppers regularly had a 26%
reduction in cardiovascular disease (CVD) death, a 23% relative
reduction in cancer death, and a 25% relative reduction in all-cause
death, compared to those who rarely or never ate them.
“We were surprised to find that in these previously published
studies, regular consumption of chili pepper was associated with an
overall risk reduction of all-cause, CVD and cancer mortality. It
highlights that dietary factors may play an important role in overall
health,” said senior author Dr.Bo Xu, a cardiologist at Cleveland
Clinic’s Heart, Vascular and Thoracic Institute.
“The exact reasons and mechanisms that might explain our
findings, though, are currently unknown,” he added.“Therefore,
it is impossible to convincingly say that eating more chili pepper can
prolong life and reduce deaths, especially from cardiovascular factors or
cancer.More research, especially evidence from randomized controlled
studies, is needed to confirm these new findings.”
Additionally, as the precise amount and type of chili pepper
consumed varied across the four studies used in the research, it’s tricky
to determine exactly how much and what type of chili peppers may provide
the health benefits. However, the researchers are continuing to analyze
the data in the hope of uncovering more concrete evidence.
