A
It all started with a simple question:“Can I paint your portrait?”
In the summer of 2015, Brian Peterson and his wife, Vanessa, just moved to Santa Ana, California.Outside the couple’s fourth-floor apartment, a messy homeless man was often shouting on the street corner, sometimes keeping them awake at night.Peterson, 28, would pass the guy on his way to his job as a car designer at Kia Corporation, but they never spoke.
One day, Peterson was relaxing in his living room, reading the book Love Does, about the power of love in action, when his quiet was disturbed by the homeless man.Inspired by the book’s sympathetic message, Peterson made an unexpected decision: He was going to go outside and introduce himself.
In that first conversation, Peterson learned that the man’s name was Matt Faris. He’d moved to southern California from Kentucky to pursue a career in music, but he soon fell on hard times and ended up living on the street for more than a decade.
“It was the weirdest thing to me,” Peterson recalled later on the podcast (播客) Top Artist.“I saw beauty on the face of a man who hadn’t shaved in probably a year, had overgrown fingernails, and probably hadn’t had a shower in close to a year. But his story, the life inside of him, inspired me.” And even though Peterson, a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in about eight years, he asked if he could paint Faris’s portrait.Faris said yes.
Peterson’s connection with Faris led to the creation of Faces of Santa Ana, a nonprofit organization that befriends unhoused community members and paints portraits of them.Using a black-and-white photo taken with his phone, Peterson selects colors based on the subject’s personality and story, resulting in powerful portraits. He sells the large paintings, signed by both the subject and the artist, for a few thousand dollars.Half of the profits go into a “love account” for the models, helping them start again.Faris used his portrait funds to fulfill his musical dreams by recording an album.

My retired husband and I had moved to California to be near our daughter and family. With nothing to do, I felt I needed something to add meaning to my life.
One afternoon, I noticed a small ad in our local newspaper asking for Support Volunteers to help out at the fire department.Hmmm.Maybe I could do some filing or other office work. However, I was afraid of meeting new people and uncomfortable in unfamiliar situations. What if I went to a group where everyone knew everyone else — and I was the odd one out? Nope. Not for me.
I called and was told they were starting a class to train new volunteers. When I realized that everyone was going to be a newbie (新手) at the same time, I smiled. Now, that was more like it and I felt relieved.
I was interviewed, and had my fingerprints taken and my background checked.I passed. The Support Volunteers — or SVs, as we were called — came from many different walks of life. This particular group was made up of retired people with interests similar to my own.Together, we made up an efficient, knowledgeable, capable team.
Each of us was on duty for twenty-four hours, one day a week, with a partner. While on duty, we transferred mail and equipment to and from the city’s seven fire stations, city hall, and fire/police headquarters. We also taught businesses and the public how to use fire extinguishers, helped monitor school fire drills, installed free smoke detectors in the homes of seniors, and handed out fire-prevention information at community events.
During my years as a fire-department volunteer, not only did I become comfortable with strangers, but I could speak in public with ease.I also learned what it felt like to be on the receiving end of services provided by a totally different but fiercely dedicated group of firefighters.I’m glad I had the courage to make that original volunteer phone call.

Let’s face it — reading a paperback novel and listening to an audiobook are two completely separate reading experiences. However, despite their physical significant differences, audiobooks and regular books share more similarities than you may think. Although listening to an audiobook doesn’t require you to sit down and peruse pages with your eyes, both methods allow you to fulfill the common purpose of acquiring information from a book.
The main difference between the two comes from the way the messages are decoded in your mind. Spoken language and written language are processed differently by the brain, meaning that you can receive the same information from two different sources, but they’ll be processed through different parts of the brain. To illustrate, listening activates the hearing center of the brain, while reading the written word is processed by the visual cortex (皮层).
This phenomenon also depends on the type of information being processed. For instance, a fiction novel being read for pleasure will be processed differently than a non-fiction book you are studying for academic or professional purposes. This is because you read fiction novels for entertainment, which can easily be forgotten afterward. Non-fiction is read for the purpose of retaining information for later use. In either case, whether you are reading a book or listening to one, the brain will process both fictional and non-fictional material and retain information, respectively.
Audiobooks and physical books may have their differences, but they share a common denominator: absorbing information from a book. As such, audiobooks can technically count as reading, as both outcomes are relatively the same.
Actually, audiobooks are more than just something to listen to — they’re a way for people to continue learning while on the go and to maintain motivation to practice self-care and improvement. More importantly, they can improve both brain function and physical aspects of your daily life.
9.What’s the difference between reading a paperback book and listening to an audiobook?( )
A.They lead to different results. B.They offer different resources.
C.They serve different purposes. D.They use different brain regions.
10.What can we learn about a non-fiction book?( )
A.People usually read it for pleasure. B.Reading it is less time-consuming.
C.It will be forgotten more easily afterwards. D.Reading it involves more conscious effort.
11.What does the underlined word “denominator” in Paragraph 4 mean?( )
A.Theory. B.Feature. C.Concept. D.Principle.
12.What will the author probably talk about in the paragraphs that follow?( )
A.The health benefits of audiobooks.
B.The advantages of paperback books.
C.The similarities between audiobooks and physical books.
D.The differences between audiobooks and physical books.
Whatever your age, there’s strong scientific evidence that being physically active can help you lead a healthier and happier life. 13.( ).It preserves muscle strength, keeps your heart strong, maintains a healthy body weight, and staves off chronic diseases such as diabetes.
14.( ).Many studies have suggested that the parts of the brain that control thinking and memory are larger in volume in people who exercise than in people who don’t. One finding is that engaging in a program of regular exercise of moderate intensity over six months or a year is associated with an increase in the volume of selected brain regions.
Exercise can also boost memory and thinking indirectly by improving mood and sleep, and by reducing stress and anxiety. Problems in these areas frequently cause or contribute to cognitive impairment. Is one exercise better than another in terms of brain health? 15.( ), because almost all of the research so far has looked at one form of exercise: walking. “But it’s likely that other forms of aerobic (有氧的) exercise that get your heart pumping might yield similar benefits,” explains Dr. Scott McGinnis, assistant professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School.
Aerobic exercise is a physical activity that uses your body’s large muscle groups, which is rhythmic and repetitive. 16.( ). Examples of aerobic exercise include walking, running, jogging, biking, and swimming. It reduces your risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
17.( ), like walking for health or cycling instead of using the car to get around. However, the more you do, the better, and taking part in activities such as sports and exercise will make you even healthier.
A.Nothing is more important than health
B.Exercise benefits health in so many ways
C.We don’t know the answer to this question
D.But exercise can be beneficial to your brain too
E.It increases your heart rate and how much oxygen your body uses
F.We move around less and burn off less energy than people used to
G.For most people, the easiest way to get moving is to make activity part of everyday life
UNIT 4 SHARING
Ⅰ.
Peterson’s connection with Faris led to the creation of Faces of Santa Ana可知,Peterson与Faris的联系促成了Santa Ana这一非营利性组织的成立。
When I realized that everyone was going to be a newbie (新手) at the same time, I smiled.
根据第二段中you can receive the same information from two different sources, but they’ll be processed through different parts of the brain可知,当我们读纸质书和听有声书时,我们获取同样的信息,但是这些信息在大脑中不同的区域被处理。
根据第三段中you read fiction novels for entertainment, which can easily be forgotten afterward. Non-fiction is read for the purpose of retaining information for later use可知,我们阅读虚构小说是为了娱乐,之后很容易被遗忘;而阅读非虚构类书籍是为了学术或专业目的,需要保留信息以备以后使用。
Is one exercise better than another in terms of brain health?
17.G 下文列举了日常生活中的两种锻炼方式:like walking for health or cycling instead of using the car to get around,G项(对大多数人来说,最简单的运动方式就是让运动成为日常生活的一部分)强调日常锻炼的重要性,符合语境。

It all started with a simple question: “Can
I paint your portrait?”
In the summer of 2015, Brian Peterson and his wife, Vanessa,
just moved to Santa Ana, California.Outside the couple’s fourth-floor
apartment, a messy homeless man was often shouting on the street
corner, sometimes keeping them awake at night.Peterson, 28, would
pass the guy on his way to his job as a car designer at Kia Corporation,
but they never spoke.
One day, Peterson was relaxing in his living room, reading the
book Love Does, about the power of love in action, when his quiet was
disturbed by the homeless man.Inspired by the book’s sympathetic
message, Peterson made an unexpected decision: He was going to go
outside and introduce himself.
In that first conversation, Peterson learned that the man’s name
was Matt Faris. He’d moved to southern California from Kentucky to
pursue a career in music, but he soon fell on hard times and ended up
living on the street for more than a decade.
“It was the weirdest thing to me,” Peterson recalled later on the
podcast (播客) Top Artist.“I saw beauty on the face of a man who
hadn’t shaved in probably a year, had overgrown fingernails, and
probably hadn’t had a shower in close to a year. But his story, the life
inside of him, inspired me.” And even though Peterson, a graduate of
the Cleveland Institute of Art, hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in about
eight years, he asked if he could paint Faris’s portrait.Faris said yes.
Peterson’s connection with Faris led to the creation of Faces of
Santa Ana, a nonprofit organization that befriends unhoused community
members and paints portraits of them.Using a black-and-white photo taken
with his phone, Peterson selects colors based on the subject’s
personality and story, resulting in powerful portraits. He sells the large
paintings, signed by both the subject and the artist, for a few thousand
dollars.Half of the profits go into a “love account” for the models,
helping them start again.Faris used his portrait funds to fulfill his musical
dreams by recording an album.

My retired husband and I had moved to
California to be near our daughter and family. With nothing to do, I felt I
needed something to add meaning to my life.
One afternoon, I noticed a small ad in our local newspaper asking
for Support Volunteers to help out at the fire department.Hmmm.Maybe I
could do some filing or other office work. However, I was afraid of
meeting new people and uncomfortable in unfamiliar situations. What if I
went to a group where everyone knew everyone else — and I was the odd
one out? Nope.Not for me.
I called and was told they were starting a class to train new
volunteers. When I realized that everyone was going to be a newbie (新
手) at the same time, I smiled. Now, that was more like it and I felt
relieved.
I was interviewed, and had my fingerprints taken and my
background checked.I passed. The Support Volunteers — or SVs, as we
were called — came from many different walks of life. This particular
group was made up of retired people with interests similar to my
own.Together, we made up an efficient, knowledgeable, capable
team.
Each of us was on duty for twenty-four hours, one day a week,
with a partner. While on duty, we transferred mail and equipment to and
from the city’s seven fire stations, city hall, and fire/police
headquarters. We also taught businesses and the public how to use fire
extinguishers, helped monitor school fire drills, installed free smoke
detectors in the homes of seniors, and handed out fire-prevention
information at community events.
During my years as a fire-department volunteer, not only did I
become comfortable with strangers, but I could speak in public with
ease.I also learned what it felt like to be on the receiving end of services
provided by a totally different but fiercely dedicated group of
firefighters.I’m glad I had the courage to make that original volunteer
phone call.

Let’s face it — reading a paperback novel and listening to an
audiobook are two completely separate reading experiences. However,
despite their physical significant differences, audiobooks and regular
books share more similarities than you may think. Although listening to an
audiobook doesn’t require you to sit down and peruse pages with your
eyes, both methods allow you to fulfill the common purpose of acquiring
information from a book.
The main difference between the two comes from the way the
messages are decoded in your mind. Spoken language and written
language are processed differently by the brain, meaning that you can
receive the same information from two different sources, but they’ll be
processed through different parts of the brain. To illustrate, listening
activates the hearing center of the brain, while reading the written word
is processed by the visual cortex (皮层).
This phenomenon also depends on the type of information being
processed. For instance, a fiction novel being read for pleasure will be
processed differently than a non-fiction book you are studying for
academic or professional purposes. This is because you read fiction novels
for entertainment, which can easily be forgotten afterward. Non-fiction
is read for the purpose of retaining information for later use. In either
case, whether you are reading a book or listening to one, the brain will
process both fictional and non-fictional material and retain information,
respectively.
Audiobooks and physical books may have their differences, but they
share a common denominator: absorbing information from a book. As
such, audiobooks can technically count as reading, as both outcomes
are relatively the same.
Actually, audiobooks are more than just something to listen to —
they’re a way for people to continue learning while on the go and to
maintain motivation to practice self-care and improvement. More
importantly, they can improve both brain function and physical aspects
of your daily life.

9. What’s the difference between reading a paperback book and listening
to an audiobook?( )
A. They lead to different results.
B. They offer different resources.
C. They serve different purposes.
D. They use different brain regions.

根据第二段中you can receive the same
information from two different sources, but they’ll be processed
through different parts of the brain可知,当我们读纸质书和听有
10. What can we learn about a non-fiction book?( )
A. People usually read it for pleasure.
B. Reading it is less time-consuming.
C. It will be forgotten more easily afterwards.
D. Reading it involves more conscious effort.

根据第三段中you read fiction novels for
entertainment, which can easily be forgotten afterward. Non-fiction is
read for the purpose of retaining information for later use可知,我们阅读
11. What does the underlined word “denominator” in Paragraph 4
mean?( )
A. Theory. B. Feature.
C. Concept. D. Principle.
画线词后面的absorbing information from a

12. What will the author probably talk about in the paragraphs that
follow?( )
A. The health benefits of audiobooks.
B. The advantages of paperback books.
C. The similarities between audiobooks and physical books.
D. The differences between audiobooks and physical books.

Whatever your age, there’s strong scientific evidence that being
physically active can help you lead a healthier and happier life. 13.
( ).It preserves muscle strength, keeps your heart strong,
maintains a healthy body weight, and staves off chronic diseases such as
diabetes.
  14. ( ).Many studies have suggested that the parts of the brain
that control thinking and memory are larger in volume in people who
exercise than in people who don’t. One finding is that engaging in a
program of regular exercise of moderate intensity over six months or a year
is associated with an increase in the volume of selected brain regions.
Exercise can also boost memory and thinking indirectly by improving
mood and sleep, and by reducing stress and anxiety. Problems in these
areas frequently cause or contribute to cognitive impairment. Is one
exercise better than another in terms of brain health? 15.( ),
because almost all of the research so far has looked at one form of
exercise: walking. “But it’s likely that other forms of aerobic (有氧
的) exercise that get your heart pumping might yield similar benefits,”
explains Dr. Scott McGinnis, assistant professor of neurology at Harvard
Medical School.
Aerobic exercise is a physical activity that uses your body’s large
muscle groups, which is rhythmic and repetitive. 16.( ).
Examples of aerobic exercise include walking, running, jogging,
biking, and swimming. It reduces your risk of heart disease, diabetes,
high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
17.( ), like walking for health or cycling instead of using the
car to get around. However, the more you do, the better, and taking
part in activities such as sports and exercise will make you even healthier.
A. Nothing is more important than health
B. Exercise benefits health in so many ways
C. We don’t know the answer to this question
D. But exercise can be beneficial to your brain too
E. It increases your heart rate and how much oxygen your body uses
F. We move around less and burn off less energy than people used to
G. For most people, the easiest way to get moving is to make activity
part of everyday life
