The great elephant stands in the hot African sun. Slowly the beast lifts its head and its thick trunk delicately curls around the leaves of a nearby tree, pulling out the leaves and politely slipping them into its mouth.
The beast’s great grey skin is partly broken and aged from the African sun. Some mud drops on one side from its last trip to a nearby river. Its rough hair sticks out from all over its skin and two large, white tusks curve elegantly from either side of its mouth.
Somewhere a lion roars and something else gives a loud high shout. A vulture (秃鹫) drifts over far above this world, barely a black dot in the sky. The buzzing of the countless bush insects seems to collectively shift up in high tune, almost like the whole of the savanna (热带草原) was singing some song that only they knew.
I peer through the lens (镜头) at this scene. The zoom lens shows almost every detail of the elephant: the three small cuts in its left ear from playing as a baby around thorn trees, the scar down its front leg where a lion caught it unaware as a young adult, and weathering on its great, valuable tusks from decades of living in this unforgiving grassland on a dusty continent.
And then the elephant looks at me.
It looks at me with those big, eyelashed eyes with a warmth coming outwards from a vast, hidden depth there. I can suddenly feel its soul, and feel the line of elephants that came before this one, trailing back to the very beginnings of this great savanna. We will never understand what wonders this ancient being and its kind have seen and whispered to each other across the ages on this old, sacred grassland.
It looks at me, and it looks through me and sees me.
The elephant knows I am there. It always did. It is not running away, nor is it fighting. It accepts and forgives. It loves. But, mostly, it just feels sad. It feels sorry for me. I cannot do this anymore.
I take my eye off the sights and hand the gun back to my partner. “Let’s go home,” I said in a quiet voice, “let’s just go home.”
24. According to the first two paragraphs, which word can best describe the elephant
A. Mysterious. B. Depressed. C. Aggressive. D. Graceful.
25. When the author sees through the lens, he is .
A. deeply moved and filled with sympathy B. overwhelmed by the elephant’s strength
C. annoyed at the presence of other animals D. shocked and scared by the elephant’s scars
26. What does the author intend to do initially
A. Take a picture. B. Observe the elephant.
C. Hunt the elephant. D. Study African grassland.
27. What can we learn from the passage
A. Nature calms our anger. B. Nature purifies our souls.
C. Nature heals our wounds. D. Nature enriches our imagination.

Dancing lowers the depression associated with Parkinson’s disease, and the benefits can be seen in multiple ways, a new study shows.
“It was very cool to see dance had a positive effect on the mood circuits in the brain, which we could see in the imaging from MRI brain scans (扫描),” says Joseph DeSouza, author of the study. “These improvements were also reported by the participants via survey. Our study is the first to demonstrate these benefits across these two detection methods.”
The study followed 23 participants with Parkinson’s disease from the Sharing Dance Parkinson’s program at Canada’s National Ballet School, along with family members or caregivers. Participants took weekly dance classes for 8 months, progressing from simple leg and foot work to more complex movements like waltzes and more. The research team focused on the subcallosal cingulate gyrus (SCG), a brain region linked to depression. They measured mood and depression before and after each class using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) (老年抑郁量表) and conducted regular MRI scans.
The researchers found that after each dance class, reported depression rates dropped, and the effect was increasing from class to class, with significant improvements after 8 months. “We showed that SCG’s BOLD (blood oxygen level dependent) signal decreases while dancing, which means the SCG was not functioning as fast as it would if you had depression,” says DeSouza. “Parkinson’s disease is often accompanied by depression long before motor symptoms (症状) appear.”
Dance is thought to have a double benefit, with music activating the brain’s reward centers, and the movement acting on sensory and motor circuits. DeSouza, dancing with participants for 14 years, says that while dancing is not a treatment for Parkinson’s disease by itself, the benefits are clear. “We’re not trying to cure it with dance,” he says. “What we’re trying to do is to have people live a better quality of life. This goes for both the patients, and their families that take care of them.”
28. What do we know about the results of the two detection methods
A. They fall short of expectations.
B. They are more accurate than before.
C. They are distinct from each other.
D They show consistent conclusions.
29. How did the researchers conduct the study
A. By referring to previous studies. B. By making pre-post comparisons.
C. By employing computer modeling. D. By conducting drug experiments.
30. What did the researchers find about the SCG
A. It is in charge of motor system.
B. It can be measured by the GDS.
C. Dancing slows down its functioning.
D. Depression weakens its BOLD signal.
31. What is the best title of the text
A. Dancing Away Parkinson’s Blues B. Dancing: Multiple Benefits To Be Seen
C. Dancing With Your Mood Circuits D. Dancing: A Journey To Mental Well-being
D
According to an idea called the “inflationary (暴胀的) multiverse”, the universe has been constantly expanding, which would have created a countless number of other universes. Collectively, these cosmic islands form what scientists call a “multiverse”. However, other universes may lie beyond our scientific reach, physically and philosophically. Consequently, the methodologies by which physicists might validate (验证) the multiverse and whether such validation is even possible remain unresolved inquiries.
In science, hypotheses (假说) are used to propose explanations, but from hypotheses to theories, validation of predictions is essential to see whether initial assumptions are supported or disproved. Theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli says, “It is hard to write theories that survive the proof of reality. Few survive thanks to a basic idea: Do not trust your fancies. Keep only the ideas that can be tested.” Rovelli adds, “Today many physicists are wasting time trying to guess and jumping to conclusions. This approach has never worked previously, and it is not working now.” The multiverse might be one of those wild guesses.
Now, physicists are debating whether that problem moves the multiverse from physics to metaphysics, from the world of science to that of philosophy. Philosopher Richard Dawid believes scientists could support the multiverse hypotheses without actually finding physical support. “If we have a theory that seems to work, and have come up with nothing that works better, chances are our idea is right,” he says. Not everyone is so cheerful, though. Sabine Hossenfelder, another theoretical physicist, thinks “Without making contact with observation, a theory isn’t part of the natural sciences, and not physics.”
Some supporters of the multiverse claim they have found physical evidence. Andrei Linde insists “Our universe seems fine-tuned (精调的) to be favourable to life, with a four-dimensional space in which we can live. It is certain that in an eternally inflating multiverse, one of the universes should turn out like ours. Each universe can have different physical laws and fundamentals. Given limitless changes, a universe on which humans can be born will be born. The multiverse actually explains why we’re here. And our existence, therefore, helps explain why the multiverse is plausible.”
Just as Einstein’s theory of general relativity could only be confirmed recently with a billion-dollar instrument called LIGO, scientists may eventually discover more direct evidence of the multiverse. So far, all of science has relied on testability, but those tests take time, and most theoreticians want to wait it out. They are not ready to shelve an idea like the multiverse — which could actually be the answer to life, the universe and everything — until and unless they can prove to themselves it doesn’t exist. And that day may never come.
32. What can we learn from the passage
A. The multiverse is recognized as a theory.
B. The multiverse starts debates on human existence.
C. Rovelli criticizes physicists for their baseless fancies.
D. Dawid emphasizes the necessity of physical evidence.
33. What does the underlined word “plausible” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Credible. B. Complex. C. Essential. D. Fascinating.
34. As for the existence of multiverse the author is _________.
A. negative B. neutral C. certain D. positive
35. Which would be the best title for this passage
A. Mysteries of Multiverse: Fine-Tuned for Life
B. Can Physicists Ever Prove the Multiverse Is Real
C. The Inflationary Multiverse: Proven Beyond Doubt
D. Have Physicists Lost Their Minds in the Multiverse

阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The printed book is back. Studies have shown that students retain more information when reading a hard-copy book compared to reading on a digital device. ____36____ The students found, according to a teacher, that “the ease of navigation (浏览)” was superior when using a traditional book.
I love the way we now judge printed books using the language of the digital world. E-books may come with a “suite of navigational tools,” but it turns out that the best navigational devices are your forefinger and thumb. ____37____ To think, all this time, those devices have just been sitting there, dangling at the ends of your arms.
Can a traditional book offer all the features of an e-book Alas, no. ____38____ Luckily, it will naturally form two halves joined in the middle (“the spine”). If the left-hand chunk is thicker than the right-hand one, you are more than halfway through.
Fans of the e-book point out digital text is easy to annotate (注解). Some devices even feature an image of a pencil to guide readers through the process. Traditional-book users have a similar system called a “pencil.” Thus annotated, such books can be left around for others to peruse (精读).
____39____ However, one must question whether this is really an advantage. In secondary school, placing the weighty textbooks in my backpack would draw my shoulders back and my chest forward in a way that turned the school into the equivalent of a military parade ground. It totally transformed my physique.
Educational trends come and go. ____40____ But for the moment, I find myself standing at attention, flexing my textbook-built shoulders and saluting their glorious return.
A. There’s still no substitute for the traditional book.
B. Traditional books also excel at stirring up feelings.
C. Admittedly, e-books are lighter than paper volumes.
D. Maybe the shift back to traditional books won’t last.
E. You can use them to flip the pages forward and backward.
F. It lacks a “progress bar” indicating what percentage of the book has been read.
G. In response, one school near where I live in Australia abandoned its e-readers entirely.

I recently had a challenging time working on a group project. My teacher put me with three people who weren’t all that excited about getting any work done.
Our assignment was to pick one of the 50 states and make a brochure about it. “Let’s pick Hawaii!” said Emma, “Hawaii has super-cute swimsuits” “True!” Agreed Angela, “Speaking of swimsuits, there are some get-ready-for-summer sales happening now.” “Really Maybe my mother will take me shopping this weekend,” said Emma.
I turned to Bernard, “Which state do you think we should pick ” He shrugged (耸肩), “I don’t care. But what happened to your hair, Jessica It looks like caught in a blender (搅拌机)!”
No one in my group seemed very eager to talk about our project, so I went ahead and shared interesting facts I knew about Hawaiian food and culture. When I was done, no one responded, so I pulled out my notebook. I asked Emma to search for pictures of Hawaiian sea life. But she said she was busy and asked if her picture at a Hawaii hotel pool would do. I requested Angela and Bernard to find Hawaiian historical information and geography respectively. It turned out they all had their own business. I was getting the impression that none but me planned to work on the brochure.
Later that day, as I set the table for dinner, my mom could tell I was stressed-out. “What’s going on ” she asked. I told her what happened and sighed, “So I guess the only way to get the brochure done is for me to do it myself.”
“Well,” my mom said with a smile, “when it comes to homework, they don’t necessarily do things you order. Second, I doubt if you’re responsible for everyone else’s part. Why don’t you check in with your teacher about it ”
When I talked to my teacher the next day he explained he would grade the assignment partly on the finished brochure but mostly on our individual work, which made me much less worried.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【原文】 M: Ever heard of a man named Buckminster Fuller He was a scientist, inventor, and also a great architect. What made Buckminster so special was his concern for the planet and human. When you have a shortage of resources, he said, you get war. Thus, he claimed that to solve human’s major problems, we have to anticipate what will become problems as resources reduce. He was especially interested in developing more efficient housing; that is, a new way of constructing buildings so that they provide more housing space with the use of fewer resources. One solution he came up with in the late 1940’s is a structure shaped like a piece of a globe, which amazed the world and brought him international reputation. That’s it for today’s Daily Takeaway. Tomorrow we’ll introduce one of the most influential lecturers in Oxford University.

【答案】24. D 25. A 26. C 27. B

D. They show consistent conclusions.
29. How did the researchers conduct the study
A. By referring to previous studies. B. By making pre-post comparisons.
C. By employing computer modeling. D. By conducting drug experiments.
30 What did the researchers find about the SCG
Dancing: A Journey To Mental Well-being
【答案】28. D 29. B 30. C 31. A

【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“They measured mood and depression before and after each class using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) (老年抑郁量表) and conducted regular MRI scans. (他们使用老年抑郁量表(GDS)在每节课前后测量情绪和抑郁,并定期进行MRI扫描。)”可知,研究人员在每节课前后测量情绪和抑郁,是通过前后对比来进行研究的。故选B。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“We showed that SCG’s BOLD (blood oxygen level dependent) signal decreases while dancing, which means the SCG was not functioning as fast as it would if you had depression, (我们发现,SCG的BOLD(血氧水平依赖性)信号在跳舞时会减弱,这意味着SCG的功能不如抑郁症患者运行得那么快)”可知,跳舞会让SCG的运行速度放缓。故选C。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Dancing lowers the depression associated with Parkinson’s disease, and the benefits can be seen in multiple ways, a new study shows. (一项新的研究表明,跳舞可以降低与帕金森氏症相关的抑郁,其益处通过多种方式看出。)”以及文章内容可知,本文主要介绍了舞蹈可缓解帕金森病患者的抑郁症状,通过MRI扫描和问卷调查验证其效果,所以“跳舞远离帕金森氏症的忧郁”适合作为文章标题。故选A。
34. As for the existence of multiverse, the author is _________.
A. negative B. neutral C. certain D. positive
35. Which would be the best title for this passage
A. Mysteries of Multiverse: Fine-Tuned for Life
B. Can Physicists Ever Prove the Multiverse Is Real
C. The Inflationary Multiverse: Proven Beyond Doubt
D. Have Physicists Lost Their Minds in the Multiverse
【答案】32. C 33. A 34. D 35. B
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要解释了什么是多元宇宙,以及物理学家对于这一概念的不同看法和论证。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli says, “It is hard to write theories that survive the proof of reality. Few survive thanks to a basic idea: Do not trust your fancies. Keep only the ideas that can be tested.” Rovelli adds, “Today many physicists are wasting time trying to guess and jumping to conclusions. This approach has never worked previously, and it is not working now.” The multiverse might be one of those wild guesses.(理论物理学家Carlo Rovelli说:“很难写出经得起现实证明的理论。很少有理论能幸存下来,这要归功于一个基本的理念:不要相信你的幻想。只保留那些可以被测试的想法。”Rovelli补充道:“今天,许多物理学家都在浪费时间去猜测和草率下结论。这种方法以前从未奏效,现在也行不通。”多元宇宙可能是这些大胆的猜测之一)”可知,罗维利批评物理学家毫无根据的幻想(包括多元宇宙),认为真正的理论需要现实上经得起被测试。故选C。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“It is certain that in an eternally inflating multiverse, one of the universes should turn out like ours. Each universe can have different physical laws and fundamentals. Given limitless changes, a universe on which humans can be born will be born. The multiverse actually explains why we’re here.(可以肯定的是,在一个永远膨胀的多元宇宙中,其中一个宇宙应该和我们的宇宙一样。每个宇宙都有不同的物理定律和基本原理。鉴于无限的变化,一个人类可以诞生的宇宙将会诞生。多元宇宙实际上解释了我们为什么在这里)”以及“And our existence, therefore, helps explain why the multiverse is(因此,我们的存在有助于解释为什么多元宇宙……)”可知,上文therefore表示因果关系,说明多元宇宙实际上解释了我们为什么在这里,而我们的存在有助于解释多元宇宙的概念是可信的。故划线词意思是“可信的”。故选A。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Just as Einstein’s theory of general relativity could only be confirmed recently with a billion-dollar instrument called LIGO, scientists may eventually discover more direct evidence of the multiverse.(正如爱因斯坦的广义相对论直到最近才被价值数十亿美元的LIGO仪器证实一样,科学家们最终可能会发现多元宇宙的更直接证据)”和“They are not ready to shelve an idea like the multiverse — which could actually be the answer to life, the universe and everything — until and unless they can prove to themselves it doesn’t exist. And that day may never come.(他们还没有准备好搁置像多元宇宙这样的想法——它实际上可能是生命、宇宙和一切的答案——除非他们能证明它不存在。这一天可能永远不会到来)”可知,对于多元宇宙的存在,作者是肯定的态度。故选D。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“According to an idea called the “inflationary (暴胀的) multiverse”, the universe has been constantly expanding, which would have created a countless number of other universes. Collectively, these cosmic islands form what scientists call a “multiverse”. However, other universes may lie beyond our scientific reach, physically and philosophically. Consequently, the methodologies by which physicists might validate (验证) the multiverse and whether such validation is even possible remain unresolved inquiries.(根据一种被称为“暴胀多元宇宙”的观点,宇宙一直在不断膨胀,这将创造出无数的其他宇宙。
【答案】36. G 37. E 38. F 39. C 40. D

【答案】Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is Li Hua, an exchange student in the US. I’m writing to make a complaint about an awful dining experience at your restaurant last Saturday.
The reason for my dissatisfaction is that both the service and food quality fell short of expectation. While ordering grilled salmon, the server was rude and impatient, ignoring my questions about the menu. Worse still, despite waiting 40 minutes, the dish arrived salty and not cooked properly. Then I requested a replacement, but the server refused and claimed it was “standard quality”, which truly is unacceptable.
It’s my sincere hope that you could investigate these issues, improve staff training, and provide compensation. Awaiting your prompt reply!
Best regards,
Li Hua

Later that day as I set the table for dinner, my mom could tell I was stressed-out.
Why don’t you check in with your teacher about it ”
When I talked to my teacher the next day, he explained he would grade the assignment partly on the finished brochure but mostly on our individual work, which made me much less worried.

【答案】At our next group meeting, I tried to bring up my concerns in a friendly way. I carefully explained grading rules of the project and suggested that they take it seriously. “Since we’re a team, we rely on each other to do the best we can.” I told them, assuring everybody that we could seek solutions together if troubles arose. My sincerity persuaded my teammates. Emma, Angela, and Bernard all ended up doing their share. The following days witnessed our lively discussion and cooperation. Shining moments occurred when the girls added fashion information and Bernard put humour to our work. As we handed in our assignment, I felt my stress relieved.
Finally, we were amazed to receive the grade for our group project. Right as the teacher said, our group work was graded majorly based on efforts of each member. It was not excellent but good enough to reward what we had prepared and contributed. Smile spread across my teammates’ faces. They genuinely thanked me as it was my inclusive attitude that helped them get work done, which I owed to my mom’s golden advice. Next time when you are stuck with teamwork troubles, don’t shoulder everything but try a friendly communication.
