invited to forward candidates from their competitions, however the application must be completed for consideration.
The online application will request electronic submission of the following:

After submitting your online application, we will ask you to send six copies of what you consider to be your

We put limitations on ourselves when the fear of failure grows stronger than our will to succeed. That’s why
we all need a push to help us reach further than we ever thought possible.
That is the purpose of NubAbility Athletics Foundation, a nonprofit organization aimed to get “limb (肢体)
different” youth — kids who are amputees (被截肢者) — “out of the stands, off the bench, and into mainstream
sports.” The organization holds camps around the country, pairing kids and coaches with similar limb differences to
help them reach their full physical potential.

Tim, who was born without arms, certainly didn’t believe he could pull off a 20-inch box jump before he
joined. This month, the 14-year-old participated in the weight-lifting and training program at a camp and achieved
something amazing.
In a video on the Internet, we see Tim’s coach teaching him to jump onto a box. With no arm strength, it seems
like a tough task. While Tim pushes through his self-doubt and jumps, he still holds back on his first two tries and

Polar bears are icons of the Arctic. Detailed monitoring of their populations is crucial for their
conservation—but because polar bears are so difficult to find, we are missing critical data about population size.

Scientists have now developed a new tool to help: DNA analysis using skin cells left in the bears’ footprints in the
snow.
The scientists were inspired by the techniques that can be applied to tiny, degraded DNA samples. With these
techniques, it isn’t necessary to physically capture bears, which can be stressful and dangerous for both bears and
humans. Instead, the researchers can turn to the snow tracks of polar bears and look at sources of DNA left in
passing—environmental DNA. "The tracks usually contain fresh cells, and the DNA is intact because of the cold’
storage’ temperature, "said Dr. Melanie Lancaster of the World Wide Fund, lead author.
The scientists collected snow from individual tracks made by Alaskan polar bears in the wild. Additional
materials like hair and saliva(唾液)were sampled, confirming that the tracks provided accurate genotype(基因型)
24 wild polar bear tracks were sampled. The researchers melted and filtered the snow to collect environmental
DNA, then carried out micro-satellite analysis. Although the concentrations (浓度)of DNA taken from trucks
sampled in the wild were very low, 13 of the wild polar bear samples could be genotype, identifying 12 different
individuals.
This technique has huge potential to inform conservation of these animals, to better understand their
populations and behavior. Although the sampling has a lower success rate, ease of collection means that it can
significantly expand sample sizes.
"We hope this method will be taken up by the polar bear research community , with the involvement of
hunters, volunteers, and local communities, as a new way to collect information on polar bears, "said Lancaster.
"We also hope the method will be expanded to other animals living in snowy environments. "

The researchers find four majors associated with the best midlife health are architecture/engineering,
biology/life sciences, business, and — here’s a surprise — communications/journalism. Perhaps chasing after big
stories keeps us journalists in shape.
It has long been established that people with more education tend to be healthier. But does one’s major matter
To find out, the researchers analyzed data from the nationally representative American Community Survey.
Their sample consisted of 3.7 million United States-born adults between the ages of 45 and 64—the time of
life when physical functioning problems start to appear. Participants noted whether they had difficulty walking or
climbing stairs, dressing or bathing. A “yes” answer in any of those categories resulted in a grade of relatively poor
health.
The researchers focused on the 667,362 participants who earned a bachelor’s degree, but went no further in
their education. They noted each person’s college major, which they placed into one of 15 categories. They found
substantial differences in health across majors. Two majors are particularly disadvantaged in midlife. The chances
of poor health are 1.9 times greater among psychology/social work and law/public policy majors compared to
business majors. The researchers argue this is likely due to several factors. Psychology majors tend to suffer from
high unemployment and low earnings. Law/public policy majors often enter the field of law enforcement (执行).
The researchers say that they have discovered associations, not proof of causality (因果关系). But they make
a convincing case that some majors lead people to live healthier lifestyle s than others. Their findings might even

Jack’s truck they saw as it turned the corner, and this made them feel less worried.
Jack had noticed the darkness settling and Lucy’s car still parked near his house.
Remembering the heavy rain, he worried and set out with his father in the truck to
find them. As they neared the picnic area, Jack heard cries for help and spotted Lucy
and her parents signaling for help. Quickly, Jack and his father launched their boat
into the water to reach out to them.
Lucy and her parents got on Jack’s boat and crossed the river safely. They then
rode back to the mountain’s start in his truck. They were thankful to Jack and his dad
for helping them in time and being kind. They said“thank you” with tears in their eyes.
This special day taught them that being kind is powerful and they should keep helping
others. They also learned always to be ready when going out into nature. This
mountain picnic was a day they will remember forever.
