In my first years in the U. S., my parents always took me to the library to encourage my learning of English. Though I found picture books more engaging and easier to understand as a young reader, my mother pushed me to move on reading more advanced chapter books. “Just the words themselves should be enough,” she said. “If you can’t think up the image on your own, then that’s a failure of imagination.”
This was how I came across Iron & Silk, a memoir (回忆录) by Mark Salzman, who taught English in China. Salzman told how, during one lesson, he asked the students to read aloud their essays on the topic of “My Happiest Moment.” The last to read was Mr. Zhu, who wrote about attending a Peking duck banquet (宴会). “First we ate cold dishes,” he read, “Then we had steamed fish, then at last the duck arrived! The skin was brown and crisp and shiny, in my mouth it was like clouds disappearing.”
At the end of his reading, he admitted that he had never eaten Peking duck. “It’s someone else’s experience”, he said. “My wife went to Beijing and had this duck. But she often tells me about it, and I think, even though I was not there, it is my happiest moment.”
I’ve never had Peking duck. I saw it mostly on TV in the evenings, in soap operas set among the wealthy in Hong Kong. For me, it symbolized a distant luxury—something beyond our daily life. Years later, when I flipped through picture books, fictional feasts in books—the Thanksgiving turkey fantasized by the Little Match Girl reminded me of Peking Duck. The connection was entirely a work of imagination.
24. What does the mother say about chapter books according to paragraph 1
A. They help stimulate imagination. B. They are more entertaining.
C. They help build grammar skills. D. They are more accessible.
25. Where does Mr. Zhu’s happiest moment come from
A. A chapter book he read. B. An entirely made-up story.
C. A memory from his childhood. D. An experience his wife shared.
26. Why does the Thanksgiving turkey remind the author of Peking Duck
A. They are both traditional festival foods. B. They look similar to each other.
C. They both appear in literary books. D. They’re associated with luxurious moments.
27. What does the author mainly want to convey
A. The power of imagination. B. The joy of eating special food.
C. The importance of family education. D. The benefits of reading chapter books.
A 25. D 26. D 27. A

根据第三段 Mr. Zhu的陈述“My wife went to Beijing and had this duck. But she often tells me about it, and I think, even though I was not there, it is my happiest moment.(我妻子去北京吃了这只鸭子。但她经常跟我讲起,我想,即使我不在场,这也是我最快乐的时刻。)”可知,他的快乐时刻来自妻子分享的经历。故选D项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“For me, it symbolized a distant luxury—something beyond our daily life. Years later, when I flipped through picture books, fictional feasts in books—the Thanksgiving turkey fantasized by the Little Match Girl reminded me of Peking Duck.(对我来说,它象征着一种遥远的奢侈——一种超越我们日常生活的东西。多年后,当我翻阅图画书时,书中虚构的盛宴——卖火柴的小女孩幻想的感恩节火鸡让我想起了北京烤鸭。)”可知,两者都与“奢侈时刻”相关联,因此产生联想。故选D项。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文可知,全文通过母亲强调想象力、Mr. Zhu凭借他人经历构建快乐时刻、作者由火鸡联想到北京烤鸭等事例,围绕“想象力的作用”展开。且根据文中最后一段“The connection was entirely a work of imagination.(这种关联完全是想象力的产物)”直接点明主题。故选A项。
C
I was in a meeting, and my phone lit up with endless notifications “Is it urgent news A friend’s engagement A crisis ” The fear of missing out or otherwise appearing irresponsible in work tore me apart... You must have been there too.
A Stylist research reveals 50% of British adults struggle to keep up with rapid group chats, with the average person involved in 83 of them. It’s a clear sign that our lives are more connected than ever, yet often feel emotionally empty. But why exactly do they have the potential to fuel such negative emotions
For most, even if they choose to go against the pressure to stay online all the time, skipping chats means facing a great number of unread messages later, which only poses greater stress to catch up.
Besides, there’s a lack of real connection. “Group chats can make us feel like we’re surrounded by people, yet still somehow on the outside,” says psychologist Abby Rawlinson. If everyone’s chatting and you’re not part of the flow — or your message gets no replies — it can stir up that quiet ache of invisibility. Scientists have found that social rejection, even in digital form, activates the same brain regions as physical pain does, thus causing stress and despair.
“The emotional aspect of group interactions is subtle and often unspoken, which shapes how we feel we are seen, included and valued,” says Rawlinson. Over time, these patterns start to mirror real-life social hierarchy (等级制度) — even if no one’s doing it consciously.
This all rings true. But instead of falling into a rabbit hole where my message goes unanswered in a group chat and I wonder if I’m the problem, blaming myself for it, I mentally put myself in others’ shoes and think: If I don’t respond for a while, will they be mad Probably not. I remind myself that group chats are just a tool that helps us stay in touch.
28. Why does the author mention her meeting experience
A. To present a common dilemma. B. To highlight her popularity.
C. To warn against improper use of phones. D. To indicate her responsibility for work.
29. What is a negative effect of unanswered messages
A. They mean more unread messages. B. They lead to a feeling of being ignored.
C. They result in unfair social ranks. D. They remind people of physical pain.
30. What does the underlined phrase “a rabbit hole” in the last paragraph refer to
A. The tendency for self-criticism. B. The pressure to stay constantly online.
C. The fear of missing out in group chats. D. The urge to endlessly check notifications.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. The popularity of group chats. B. Ways to improve group chats.
C. The emotional cost of group chats. D. Social inequality revealed in group chats.
A 29. B 30. A 31. C
根据第一段中“I was in a meeting, and my phone lit up with endless notifications (消息提示). ‘Is it urgent news A friend’s engagement A crisis ’ The fear of missing out or otherwise appearing irresponsible in work tore me apart... You must have been there too.(当时我正在开会,手机突然被源源不断的消息提示点亮。“是紧急新闻?朋友订婚?还是突发危机?”害怕错过重要消息,或是担心在工作场合显得不负责任,这种念头让我备受煎熬……你一定也经历过这种时刻)”可知,作者提到自己开会的经历是为了呈现一种人们普遍会遇到的两难境地。故选A项。
根据第四段中“If everyone’s chatting and you’re not part of the flow — or your message gets no replies — it can stir up that quiet ache of invisibility. Scientists have found that social rejection, even in digital form, activates the same brain regions as physical pain does, thus causing stress and despair.(如果每个人都在聊天,而你没有参与其中——或者你的消息没有得到回复——这会激起那种被忽视的隐痛。科学家发现,社交排斥,即使是数字形式的,也会激活与身体疼痛相同的大脑区域,从而导致压力和绝望)”可知,未得到回复的消息会导致一种被忽视的感觉。故选B项。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线短语所在句“But instead of falling into a rabbit hole where my message goes unanswered in a group chat and I wonder if I’m the problem, blaming myself for it, I mentally put myself in others’ shoes and think: If I don’t respond for a while, will they be mad (但这次我没有陷入那种“在群里发了消息没人回就开始自我怀疑”的a rabbit hole,而是换位思考:如果我暂时没回复,别人真的会生气吗?大概率不会)”中定语从句“where my message goes unanswered in a group chat and I wonder if I’m the problem, blaming myself for it”可知,“a rabbit hole”指“在群里发了消息没人回就开始自我怀疑”这一种自我批评的倾向,与A项“The tendency for self-criticism.” 故选A项。
通读全文,结合第二段“A Stylist research reveals 50% of British adults struggle to keep up with rapid group chats, with the average person involved in 83 of them. It’s a clear sign that our lives are more connected than ever, yet often feel emotionally empty. But why exactly do they have the potential to fuel such negative emotions (《Stylist》一项最新研究显示,50%英国成年人疲于应付快节奏的群聊,平均每人竟加入了83个群组。这充分说明,虽然我们的社交联系比以往任何时候都更紧密,内心却常常感到空虚。但究竟是什么让群聊容易引发负面情绪呢?)”可知,本文主要探讨了是什么让群聊容易引发负面情绪,即与群聊相关的情感代价。故选C项。
D
There has been growing concern about “digital dementia” — the idea that excessive reliance on smartphones and the internet harms cognitive (认知的) abilities. However, recent research suggests that for adults over 50, these technologies may actually have the opposite effect. A comprehensive analysis of nearly 60 studies involving 410,000 older adults found that those who frequently used smartphones, computers, and the internet were less likely to experience cognitive decline compared to those who used them less.
Jared Benge and his colleague Michael Scullin at Baylor University in Texas searched the literature for studies involving the use of digital technologies in people over 50. The team focused on daily experience of dealing with digital technologies, and excluded ones focusing on gaming or brain training. This left 57 studies, most of which were done in Europe or North America, but there were papers from all around the world, says Benge. “And the effects seem to be fairly consistent.”
Three key mechanisms that explain this effect, says Benge. First, digital activities are more cognitively engaging than passive ones like watching TV. Second, digital technology facilitates social connections, for instance, video calls. Third, digital tools like GPS navigation help older adults maintain independence for longer, ensuring they don’t get lost even if their way-finding abilities decline, for example.
The main weakness is that the studies in the analysis relied on people self-reporting how much they used smartphones, computers or the internet. In the future, technologies such as screen-time monitoring could provide objective measures. Benge also points out that the people in these studies didn’t have smartphones or internet access as children. “Does this play out for digital natives This is a snapshot that’s encouraging, but the story is not done being told.”
That said, while the results of the meta-analysis are inconclusive, they suggest that long-term technology use can be beneficial for the brain and cognition, says neuroscientist Dean Burnett. “This clearly challenges the common quick judgment that that ‘technology equals bad’ in terms of brain and mental health.”
32. What is the main finding of the recent research
A. Smartphone use leads to memory loss in seniors.
B. Internet browsing prevents all forms of dementia.
C. Regular tech use shows cognitive benefits for the elderly.
D. Video games are better than social media for brain health.
33. What was the main focus of the studies included in the research
A. Social media habits in teenagers. B. Daily use of digital technologies.
C. Digital programs for brain training. D. Digital activities in western countries.
34. How might digital technology help older adults stay independent according to Benge
A. By encouraging more self reporting. B. By giving directions and locations.
C. By discouraging social interactions. D. By doing all their daily tasks automatically.
35. What is Dean Burnett’s attitude toward the research findings
A. Dismissive. B. Uncertain. C. Supportive. D. Critical.
C 33. B 34. B 35. C

Lifestyle creep — the tendency to increase expenses as income rises — is a well-documented yet stubbornly persistent phenomenon. Just when a person thinks he or she can save more, the urge to spend more silently threatens their financial stability. So, what is behind this unstoppable impulse (冲动) to spend
___36___ They point out that individuals, despite intentions to save, often find their budgets emptied by unnoticed daily purchases via online platforms. When you search for a topic of interest, you’ll be shown related products, which makes impulsive purchases become almost unconscious. Research highlights that the pandemic dramatically fueled addictive online shopping, particularly among the youth. ___37___ According to a 2024 study, 60% of Americans aged 18-42 admitted to impulse buys driven by social media, most of which led to regret later.
But this is not the whole picture. Kristina Durante, a marketing psychologist, explains that constant digital exposure wears out the brain’s self-discipline capacity, making reasonable decision-making nearly impossible. “The urge to buy now operates faster than conscious thought,” she notes. ___38___
With rising economic recession (衰退) concerns, choosing instant rewards over long-term saving goals is risky. Financial experts warn against justifying these small luxuries as “I deserve it.” ___39___ Even minor purchases, like a $30 item, add up over time, threatening long-term goals like retirement savings.
In an era of endless digital consumption, balancing immediate satisfaction with financial security remains a universal challenge. ___40___ Combating lifestyle creep demands active strategies such as adopting disciplined consumption habits, tracking your every expense, and manage your budget wisely.
A. Awareness alone is not enough.
B. Some handy tools are essential to tackle it.
C. The habit persists even after the pandemic.

E 37. C 38. G 39. D 40. A
由上文“So, what is behind this unstoppable impulse to spend (那么,这种无法遏制的消费冲动背后是什么?)” Many critics dismiss the tendency as a lack of self-discipline.
由上文“Research highlights that the pandemic dramatically fueled addictive online shopping, particularly among the youth. (研究强调,疫情极大地助长了令人上瘾的网络购物,尤其是在年轻人中。)”及下文“According to a 2024 study, 60% of Americans aged 18-42 admitted to impulse buys driven by social media, most of which led to regret later.(根据2024年的一项研究,60%的18-42岁的美国人承认在社交媒体的推动下冲动购物,其中大部分导致后来后悔。)” The habit persists even after the pandemic.
由上文“Kristina Durante, a marketing psychologist, explains that constant digital exposure wears out the brain’s self-discipline capacity, making reasonable decision-making nearly impossible. ‘The urge to buy now operates faster than conscious thought,’ she notes. (营销心理学家克里斯蒂娜 杜兰特解释说,持续的数字曝光会耗尽大脑的自律能力,使合理决策几乎不可能。她指出:‘现在购买的冲动比有意识的思考更快。’)”可知,此处需总结其理论核心 —— 消费冲动的根源在于心理机制,G项The root cause actually lies in psychological mechanisms.
由下文“Even minor purchases, like a $30 item, add up over time, threatening long-term goals like retirement savings. (即使是30美元的小物件,随着时间的推移也会累积起来,威胁到退休储蓄等长期目标。)”可知,此处需点明“小额消费”的潜在风险,D项Occasional treats seem harmless but accumulate. (偶尔的款待看似无害,但会累积起来。)中的“Occasional treats”对应“minor purchases”,“seem harmless”描述其表面无害性,“accumulate”与后文“add up over time”形成同义复现,揭示“小奢侈”对长期财务的侵蚀,符合“观点→具体说明”的逻辑。故选D项。
由下文“Combating lifestyle creep demands active strategies such as adopting disciplined consumption habits, tracking your every expense, and manage your budget wisely. (对抗生活方式升级需要积极的策略,如养成有纪律的消费习惯、跟踪每一笔支出并明智地管理预算。)”可知,此处需强调“仅靠意识不足以解决问题”,A项Awareness alone is not enough. 故选A项。

Dear Museum Staff,
I am Li Hua a student from China on a study tour here. I had the pleasure of visiting your museum today and was truly impressed by the rich collections and the well-organized exhibitions. The detailed introductions and the immersive displays provided a fascinating insight into different cultures and histories.
However, I noticed that many visitors, including myself, had limited time to fully explore all the exhibits. Therefore, I would like to suggest the idea of creating an online museum, which would allow people to access the museum’s collections and information at any time and from anywhere. It could also include interactive features, such as virtual tours and educational resources for students, so that more students around the world could benefit from the knowledge and beauty that your museum offers.
Thank you for considering my suggestion. I believe it could enhance the museum’s reach and impact.
Best regards,

I used to believe that being right was everything. In my mind, knowledge was power, and power was truth — clear, sharp, absolute. But the older I get, the more I realize how often truth can harm, and how the way you deliver it matters just as much as having it.
In high school, I was the kind of student who could solve a physics problem before the teacher had finished writing it. No one would deny that I was a genius. I believed in right and wrong like they were written in binary (二进制). Grey areas To me, those were for people who didn’t try hard enough to think clearly. I prized correctness above kindness, certainty over understanding. And nothing brought me more satisfaction than exposing a mistake, no matter who made it.
There was one day I can’t forget. One bright autumn morning, our class was chosen to host a model lesson for a newly arrived young teacher, Mr. Feng. The topic was climate change — a subject I adored and had read about passionately in books and articles.
The back rows were packed with the school’s top authorities: the principal, academic directors, and seasoned teachers, all watching closely. Mr. Feng had clearly rehearsed every line, but the tremble in his voice betrayed his nerves. He smiled tightly and tried to keep the lesson moving smoothly.
Then it happened.
Mr. Feng pointed to a slide about nuclear power and said, “Uraniam is one of the most powerful fuels…”
“It’s uranium (铀), not uraniam!” I stood up without being called on, loud enough for the hall to fall into silence.
My voice echoed, a spotlight in a room full of murmurs. My classmates turned to stare. The principal raised an eyebrow. I sat down, thrilled as always, at catching an error. To me, truth had been served — and that was what mattered most.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: The teacher froze, and then smiled faintly, saying “Thank you.”
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: Years later, the memory hit me when I was doing a college speech contest.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The teacher froze, and then smiled faintly, saying “Thank you.” His voice was steady, but his ears had turned red. A few teachers exchanged awkward glances; some students stifled their laughter. He corrected himself and moved on, but the tension lingered in the room like a fog. After class, a few classmates gave me curious looks — some impressed, others unsure. I felt triumphant, but also strangely hollow. Mr. Feng didn’t meet my eyes as he gathered his materials. For the first time, I wondered if being right had cost someone else more than it rewarded me.
Years later, the memory hit me when I spoke at a college speech contest. Midway through my speech, I accidentally mispronounced “she” as “he”, changing the gender of a well-known scientist I was referencing. I froze, face burning, waiting for someone to call out the mistake. But no one did. The judges stayed focused. My peers listened, graciously silent and smiley. In that moment, I remembered how Mr. Feng must have felt when I publicly pointed out his mistake. I wasn’t brave then — I was unkind. As the audience’s applause echoed, I understood — sometimes, kindness speaks louder than truth.

C To warn against improper use of phones.

34 How might digital technology help older adults stay independent according to Benge
A. By encouraging more self reporting. B. By giving directions and locations.
C. By discouraging social interactions. D. By doing all their daily tasks automatically.
35. What is Dean Burnett’s attitude toward the research findings
A. Dismissive. B. Uncertain. C. Supportive. D. Critical.

B. Some handy tools are essential to tackle it.
C. The habit persists even after the pandemic.
