Arbor Day came from the mind of a tree lover named Julius Sterling Morton, who had a passion for planting all kinds of trees. Morton was born in Adams, New York, in 1832, but his life took a decisive turn on his wedding day in October 1854. After he and his bride, Caroline Joy French, were married in Detroit, they headed west for adventure in the wilds of Nebraska Territory. The couple settled on 160 treeless acres (the key word here is treeless).
Despite being busy with his work and having four sons, Morton planted thousands of trees on the homestead he called the Morton “ranche”. He planted an apple orchard, as well as peach, plum, and pear trees, plus cottonwoods, evergreens, beeches, and more.
Morton took every opportunity he could to spread the word. He gave speeches and filled his newspaper with agricultural advice, urging Nebraskans to plant trees and try new crops.
Today, the family home, Arbor Lodge, is a state park in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Over the years, Arbor Lodge grew from a four-room home into a 52-room mansion, complete with a terraced garden, a pine grove, and 65 acres of more than 250 varieties of trees and shrubs.
Julius Sterling Morton died at the age of 70 on April 27, 1902, writing just a month earlier that he hoped to plant trees as soon as the weather turned warm. A statue of him stands in the National Hall of Fame in Washington, D.C.

Before we work on the book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, I would like to give two suggestions that will greatly add the value you will receive from this material (阅读材料).
First, I would recommend that you do not see this material as a book, in the sense that it is something just read once and put on a shelf.
You may choose to read it through once for a sense of the whole, but the material is designed to be a companion in the continual process of change and growth. As you progress to deeper levels of understanding and practice, you are supposed to go back time and again to the principles contained in each habit and work to expand your knowledge, skill, and desire.
Second, I would suggest that you change from the role of learner to that of a teacher while reading this material. Take an inside-out approach and read with the purpose in mind of sharing or discussing what you learn with someone else within 48 hours after you learn it. Read as though you are going to teach it to others, while it is still fresh, and notice the difference in your mental and emotional process.
I am sure if you approach the material in this way, you will not only better remember what you read, but your perspective will be expanded, your understanding deepened, and your motivation to apply the material increased.
In addition, as you openly, honestly share what you are learning with others, you will be surprised to find that negative labels (负面标签) or perceptions others may have had of you tend to disappear. Those you teach will see you as a changing, growing person and will be more likely to be helpful and supportive as you work, perhaps together to integrate the seven habits into your lives.
28.Which part is the text most probably taken from
A.How to Use This Book. B.“Habits” Defined.
C.The Power of Principles. D.What You Can Expect.
29.What does the author suggest readers do
A.Read the book once and shelve it. B.Read for knowledge and skills.
C.Read the book again and again. D.Read the book as a learner.
30.What is the expected result if readers follow the suggestions
A.Find better approaches. B.Build better memories.
C.Improve reading skills. D.Better understand the book.
31.Which is closest in meaning to “perceptions” in the last paragraph
A.Attractions. B.Beliefs. C.Treatments. D.Capabilities.
D
Professor Dallas Smythe first described commercial media as a system for delivering audiences to advertisers. This perception of the viewing public as a “market” for products as well as an audience for advertising reflects the economic preference of the current media system in America. The unplanned side effects of advertising, however, concern many critics (评论家).
Dinar Godrej holds the view that advertising creates an attack on our senses, that advertising can act as a “compulsive liar”, and that the disorder advertising creates attacks us with images and ideas that result in a cultural change that creates desires for goods that only the wealthy can actually get. This author takes the point of view that there is really nothing positive that advertising contributes to a society, and that just about everything about advertising is negative.
John Calfee addresses many of these issues but also focuses on how the information in ads benefits consumers. He takes the position that advertising functions in the public’s interest, and that even the argument about ads can be beneficial because they can result in competitive pricing for consumers. He also states that individuals can learn about important issues (such as health) through ads.
There are also more neutral (中立的) views, such as those held by people who see it as an economic engine to deliver “free” programs to people, or the idea that advertising is an art form in itself. Whatever the perspective, one thing is true: Advertising can have both obvious and potential (潜在的) impact. It can be defended on solid ground and criticized on solid ground.
32.Why does Dinar Godrej think advertising can be a “compulsive liar”
A.It creates disorder in our body. B.It is full of images and ideas.
C.It changes our feelings for goods. D.It creates goods for the wealthy.
33.What are the benefits of advertising according to John Calfee
A.It helps control prices. B.It decreases public’s interest.
C.It avoids arguments. D.It is good for people’s health.
34.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.Few people hold neutral views on advertising.
B.We can not see all the impact of advertising.
C.Advertising encourages us to learn about art.
D.Advertising is seldom criticized by people.
35.What is the author’s attitude toward advertising
A.Positive. B.Objective. C.Doubtful. D.Subjective.

Whether it’s painting, or sculpting tiny cupcakes out of clay, making art is good for your mind and body. 36 But you don’t have to be a full-time artist to get those health benefits. All you need to do is just making art. Here are things you need to know in particular to start your creative art habit.
37 “People tend to think that only those who are very skilled at art can call themselves artists, but everyone is capable of creative expression,” says Kaimal, a leading researcher in art therapy. Her research has shown that there are no differences in health outcomes between experienced artists and green hands. 38
Start with what you enjoy—maybe something you’ve done before, maybe something you were fond of as a kid. Keep an open mind. Anything that engages your creative mind, such as finger painting, baking, knitting, etc, is good for you. And don’t feel like that you have to stick to one thing. 39
Think about making art like any healthy habit. Just as you make time to work out, you should make time for your artistic creation. 40 Kaimal suggests setting up a corner table for your art supplies. “Your creative corner is kind of like a reminder,” she says. “It shows your commitment to invest in yourself and your well-being.”
A. Let it go that you’re not an artist.
B. Do whatever you are interested in.
C. Besides time, spare a physical space in your home for art.
D. It is also good to figure out your way of creative expression.
E. There are rules for how much time you should engage in art.
F. The act of creation can reduce stress and improve your mood.
G. So despite your skill level, you’ll feel all the good things from making art.

One week, we participated in a program that aimed to bring students fun and also strengthen their courage. On the third morning, we left our camp for a hike. We picked our way along a stream in a park. There were six of us. Tall and strong, Sam led the way.
After a while, we found a small waterfall and some smaller kids playing in the pool below together with their camp leaders. Forked ribbons of water (分叉的带状水流) leapt about three meters into the pool.
We settled ourselves on a large stone above the waterfall. We unpacked our bags and spread out food, eating and laughing. Minutes later, the others carried all the food and attempted to jump across the stream above the waterfall. Soon, they crossed the first narrow ribbon of water and were now standing on the rocks that bordered the second channel.
To me, the second channel looked so wide! Scared, I decided to stay right where I was. But they yelled back, “Come on over here! If you want any juice, that is!” I was thirsty. Slowly, I picked my way across a group of rocks till I reached a flat stone opposite where they were grouped. All had their backs to me; they were now busy aiming small stones at a fallen tree on the bank.
I glanced down. The very cold water was running past the stone, inches away from my feet. I looked across the belt of water towards the tempting fruit juice! This sight inspired me to take action. I bent down, tensed myself to leap, and then glanced towards the left side.
Barely two meters away was the waterfall. Although it was small and there were adults below, I still feared. My knees trembled; I drew back a couple of paces, staring at the running water.
“Come along, Jimmy!” Sam said in a gentle voice. I looked up. Sam stood on the other side, barely four feet away from me. He must have seen me hesitating on the edge of the stone and sensed my terror at jumping across this little stream! Embarrassed, I took off my glasses.

【原文】M:This will be our first trip since you retired from the university. Let's go over the details.
W: OK. So, we will fly from here in China to the East Coast of America and stay in New York for two nights. That's where we spent our honeymoon.
M: Nice. Then we’ll rent a car, drive to Canada and drop it off in Toronto. Then we’ll spend three nights hiking in the forests there.
W: We need to decide whether we should keep heading north in Canada or return to America. Personally, I would prefer a road trip along the West Coast of America to a train trip. How about you

【解析】
【原文】The Silk Road was an ancient network of trade routes connecting China with the West. Beginning in the ancient Chinese capitals of Chang’an and Luoyang, the routes stretched over 4000 miles to the Mediterranean Sea. The most western point was in Antioch, one of the four great cities of the Roman Empire. Chinese silk, tea, perfumes (香料), pottery (陶器), and later, world-changing inventions such as paper and gunpowder, were exported to the west. In return, western nations traded goods such as wool, glass, honey, wine, gold, and China’s most prized import — horses. As the Roman Empire gradually lost power in Asia, the route became dangerous to travel on. However, trade improved again during the 13th and 14th centuries. The Silk Road was not just used for trading, but to share ideas and beliefs. In all, the route was in use for more than 1500 years, ending in 1453, when the Ottoman Empire closed off western trade. However, parts of the Silk Road still exist today. It also inspired modern China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

67. I wiped them, searching for a reason to avoid crossing the water. After putting them on again, Sam was still there. “I don’t want any juice!” I said. Sam nodded understandingly. “Fine!” he spoke pleasantly and stood waiting. Frustrated by my own weakness, I took a deep breath, preparing myself to jump across the water. Once again, fear overwhelmed me. I looked towards where the others sat. Much to my relief, they still had their backs turned; only Sam stood opposite me, looking straight into my eyes, patiently.
Then I gathered my courage, took a step forward, and jumped lightly across the channel. A slight slip of my heel on a stone was quickly steadied by Sam’s strong forearm against my back. As I glanced up, I couldn’t help but notice Sam’s towering height — the tallest among us. “Well done, Jimmy!” he said, nodding in approval while praising me for my bravery. Meanwhile, he handed me a bottle of juice. While drinking it, I felt a sense of pride in myself and gratitude towards Sam for his kindness.
