Do you want to see majestic lions roaring, rare rhinos running and colorful birds flying You’ll find this incredible display of nature in the Kenya Lake System in the Great Rift Valley.
First stop
Fly into Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. This great city is known for its fashion markets and beautiful art. And be sure to pick up some rich Kenyan coffee while you’re there! Then head for the countryside.
Plan your trip
The largest of the three lakes in the system, Lake Nakuru, is less than 175 kilometers from Nairobi. But Lakes Bogoria and Elementaita are equally worth a visit. You can stay at one of several choices of luxurious cabins in the valley. And if you sign up for a trip, be sure to put flamingos, the white and pink birds, at the top of your list.
Paradise
The Kenya Lake System is shallow and alkaline (碱性的). That means it supports vegetation such as green algae, a food source for many waterfowl. Hundreds of species of birds flourish here, using this area as a major breeding and nesting ground. Water buffalo, leopards, monkeys and the endangered Rothschild giraffe also make this area their home.
Other sights
Wildlife isn’t the only natural wonder in the Great Rift Valley. The valley marks a place where the earth is divided far below the surface. This rock separation below ground leads to noticeable features above ground. Walking around Lake Bogoria especially, you will see steam rising from hot springs.
Other activities include golfing, horseback riding and hiking. The fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down, either. The river valley is far from city lights, so many visitors gaze at the stars shining above.
If you are ready for a wildlife experience, don’t hesitate!

A. Nairobi. B. Lake Nakuru. C. Lake Bogoria. D. Lake Elementaita.

Zheng Qinwen announced herself as a major new force in women’s tennis with an important French Open debut(首秀) last month. Now the Chinese teenager hopes the fighting spirit she showed at the Grand Slam (大满贯) tournament can encourage kids starting out in the sport to chase their dreams on the court with the same determination.
“If tennis is your dream, I think you always have to fight for your dream. Because we only have one life, you shouldn’t have any regrets,” Zheng said last week in an interview.
The 19-year-old showed she possesses the talent to be a contender at the very top level of tennis with a breakout campaign at French Open.
Accounting for two-time Grand Slam winner Simona Halep along the way, Zheng’s journey was ended in the fourth round by a three-set defeat to eventual champion Iga Swiatek. Zheng, though, gave the Polish world No. 1 a big scare, battling back from 3-0 down in the first set to force and win a tiebreak(平分决胜局).
“That was the first time I had played against the world No.1, so I really wanted to grab this chance so I could judge her level and test myself,” said Zheng. “I didn’t want to give her the match so easy like that. It was pretty difficult for me to hold on in that match because of what my body was going through, but I wanted to show her I’m not easily beaten.”
Looking back at Zheng Qinwen’s performances in this year’s French Open, there’s no doubt that she’s a true fighter. Zheng says she avoids being discouraged by higher-ranked opponents by simply focusing on the next point, one shot at a time. Supported by her team, she hopes she can one day win a Grand Slam title.
Zheng’s impressive French Open run has inevitably(不可避免地) led to comparisons with China’s solitary Grand Slam singles champion Li Na, who won the 2011 French Open and 2014 Australian Open titles.
“When I was a kid, Li Na showed that Asian people also can do something really good in tennis. She was the first one. I will just focus on my own game and then let’s see if I can really compete at the highest level,” said Zheng.
24. What does the underlined word “contender” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Competitor B. Announcer. C. Campaigner. D. Designer.
25. What is the result of the match between Zheng and Iga Swiatek
A. Iga Swiatek beat Zheng easily.
B. Zheng lost to Iga Swiatek at last.
C. Zheng won the match despite her pain.
D. Iga Swiatek lost because of her mistakes.
26. Why is Li Na mentioned in paragraph 7
A. To show how excellent Zheng Qinwen is.
B. To prove failure is the mother of success.
C. To explain why Li Na has achieved a lot.
D. To compare the difference between Zheng Qinwen and Li Na.
27. Which of the following can best describe Zheng Qinwen
A. Optimistic and generous B. Adventurous and realistic.
C. Independent and helpful D. Struggling and determined.

Called “America’s wolf”, the red wolf is the only large predator whose historic range is found entirely within the United States, stretching from Texas to New England. But hunting gradually reduced its range, and it was declared extinct in the wild in 1980.
Recovery efforts in the wild began in 1987 on the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. In a ground-breaking successful experiment, eight captive (圈养的) wolves were released this year into North Carolina, eventually growing into a population over 100, reaching a peak of around 120 wolves in 2012. But illegal hunting and management changes by the Fish and Wildlife Service resulted in their numbers plummeting.
In the spring, conservationists celebrated a small bit of good news when four captive-born pups (幼兽) were placed into a cave and successfully adopted by a wild red wolf mother. Meanwhile, another four adults were released into the wild. The pups are thought to be still alive and healthy. But the adults didn’t go well. In the months after release, three were struck by cars and killed, and the fourth was fatally shot on private land.
To boost the population after these deaths, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced in November that it planned to release nine adult red wolves into their recovery area this winter, land within and surrounding two wildlife reserves.
The Service also recently announced it would withdraw a 2018 proposal to shrink (缩小) the red wolves’ protected area in North Carolina by 90 percent, after a lawsuit accused the agency of going against the Endangered Species Act. Ron Sutherland of the Wildlands Network says it’s crucial that the agency has abandoned this wrong-headed proposal. And yet the situation now is even more urgent than it was in 2018 — this should launch the conservation community in the U. S. into crisis mode to save this species and bring it back from the extinction.
28. What does the underlined word “plummeting” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Promising. B. Declining. C. Multiplying. D. Increasing.
29. What can we infer from paragraph 3
A. The released wolves lived well.
B. The population boosted after the release.
C. The red wolf faced greater threat than before.
D. The released red wolves still needed protection.
30. What would the Service do to save red wolves
A. Shrink the red wolves’ reserves.
B. Make a proposal to protect the red wolves.
C. Put some red wolves in some specific places.
D. Force the protected area into the state of emergency.
31. What does the text focus on
A. The protection of red wolves. B. Challenges faced by red wolves.
C. Reasons for red wolves extinction. D. The relationship between red wolves and humans.
D
Many animals depend upon sound to find food or communicate with one another. These species understandably suffer when loud motorways cut through their habitats. Scientists have long documented the ecological damage caused by noise pollution. It has always been assumed, however, that noise is a problem unique to animals. But a new study by Ali Akbar Ghotbi-Ravandi, a botanist in Tehran, has revealed that plants fell victim to it too.
Working with a team of colleagues, Dr Ghotbi-Ravandi grew two species in his lab that are commonly found in urban environments. The plants were grown from seed and allowed to mature for two months in the same space before they were divided into two groups. One group was exposed to 73 decibels of traffic noise recorded from a busy motorway in Tehran for 16 hours a day. The other group was left to grow in silence. After 15 days had passed, samples were taken from the youngest fully expanded leaves on every plant in the experiment and studied.
Analysis of their leaves revealed that the chemicals which are indicators of stress in plants were found at much higher levels in the species exposed to the traffic noise. The team also found that certain chemicals normally associated with healthy growth in plants were present at significantly reduced levels in the plants exposed to the noise. Even the weight of the freshly-cut leaves differed — leaves from plants exposed to noise consistently weighed less than those from plants grown in silence.
Dr Ghotbi-Ravandi’s findings make it clear that, though plants lack ears, the vibrations (震动) generated by the noise of traffic still bothers them enough to cause strong stress responses that are not much different to those that would be found in plants exposed to extreme conditions.
The next question is whether all noise pollution affects all species in the same way. The natural world is by no means silent. Whether some plant species have evolved to adapt to the noisy environment, which might one day be collected and transplanted in urban areas, is a mystery worth exploring.
32 What does the author stress in paragraph 1
A. The influence of noise on plants. B. Effects motorways have on animals.
C. The importance of sound for animals. D. Problems plants have surviving in nature.
33. How did Dr Ghotbi-Ravandi conduct the experiment
A. By choosing two rare plant species. B. By collecting samples from old leaves.
C. By making plants grow along motorways. D. By studying plants grown in different conditions.
34. What can we know from Dr Ghotbi-Ravandi’s experiment
A. Plants exposed to noise were less stressful.
B. Changes of chemicals in leaves were unclear.
C. Leaves of plants grown in silence weighed more.
D. Plants grew more slowly when grown in silence.
35. What might researchers do in the future
A. To improve the adapting ability of plants. B. To develop new species with high survival rate.
C. To set more restrictions on urban traffic noise. D. To find plants suitable for noisy urban areas.

Maria and Peter lived in a coastal city. The greatest pleasure in summer for them was to swim at their local beach after school. But one day they started to lose their enthusiasm for swimming in the waters. More often than not, they would find plastic bags thrown on the beach. Worse sill, as they swam in the water, some plastic bags would float around them and even stick to their legs when they walked to the shore.
They were upset and decided something needed to be done to stop the beautiful sea becoming consumed by waste. One weekend,Maria and Peter brought a big bag to the beach and determined to clean it up. Sweat streamed down from their forehead while they bent down and picked up the plastic bags. To their disappointment, after a day’s hard work, there were still many plastic bags lying on the beach or floating in the water. Going home with aching legs and arms, Maria and Peter were almost defeated by a strong sense of failure.
That night over dinner with their parents the pair ate silently. Noticing their low spirits, Mother asked gently, “You two looked so down. What happened ”Exchanging glances with Peter, Maria replied in a low voice,“It’s those annoying plastic bags. We tried to clean up but it was just impossible.”Understanding the pair’s disappointment, their father patted them on the back and comforted,”Well, it’s really hard for just two of you to fix such a big problem.”“Just two of us.”complained Maria and Peter, looking at each other.Suddenly, an idea lashed through their minds, their eyes shining with excitement.“Yes,that’s the point! We should make more people aware of the problem and encourage them to take action!” the pair said in chorus.

Announcer. C. Campaigner. D. Designer.

A. Iga Swiatek beat Zheng easily.
B. Zheng lost to Iga Swiatek at last.
C. Zheng won the match despite her pain.
D. Iga Swiatek lost because of her mistakes.
26. Why is Li Na mentioned in paragraph 7

B 29. D 30. C 31. A

根据第三段“In the spring, conservationists celebrated a small bit of good news when four captive-born pups(幼兽) were placed into a cave and successfully adopted by a wild red wolf mother. Meanwhile, another four adults were released into the wild. The pups are thought to be still alive and healthy. But the adults didn’t go well. In the months after release, three were struck by cars and killed, and the fourth was fatally shot on private land.(今年春天,环保主义者庆祝了一个小小的好消息:四只圈养出生的红狼幼崽被放进一个洞穴,成功地被一只野生红狼妈妈收养。与此同时,另外四只成年红狼被放归野外。这些幼崽被认为仍然活着,健康。但成年红狼并不顺利。在释放后的几个月里,三头被汽车撞死,第四头在私人土地上被枪杀。)”可推断,被放生野外的红狼还需要保护。故选D。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“To boost the population after these deaths, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced in November that it planned to release nine adult red wolves into their recovery area this winter, land within and surrounding two wildlife reserves.(在这些死亡事件后,为了增加红狼的数量,美国鱼类和野生动物管理局在11月宣布,计划在今年冬天释放9只成年红狼到它们的恢复区,即两个野生动物保护区及其周围的土地上。)”
根据最后一段“And yet the situation now is even more urgent than it was in 2018—this should launch the conservation community in the U. S. into crisis mode to save this species and bring it back from the extinction.(然而,现在的情况甚至比2018年更紧迫——这应该启动美国的保护社区进入危机模式,以拯救这个物种,并使其从灭绝中恢复。)” 故选A。

32. What does the author stress in paragraph 1
A 33. D 34. C 35. D

故填up。
“it is adj.+to do”为固定句型,空处需填动词不定式to consume。故填to consume。
故填has been seeking/has sought。

That night over dinner with their parents, the pair ate silently. The next day, they went to the beach and filmed a short video showing plastic bags lying on the beach and floating in the sea. Peter, who was good at writing, wrote an article talking about the present situation of the beach and asking people to take part in the clean-up.
Excited and nervous, they posted the video and article on WeChat. To their amazement, their post went viral online immediately.
