资源简介 UNIT 4 Living with technologyⅠ.阅读理解 (2025·东台六校联考)Just after hatching, many birds learn to identify and follow the first moving object they encounter — a process called imprinting, which can offer protection in the wild as it helps them stay near a parent. It doesn’t take much visual information for a bird to learn to prefer one object and follow it.Researchers wanted to know whether AI models called transformers could do a similar task with limited inputs. Transformers are generic learning systems that can be trained to perform a wide variety of tasks, making them useful in both AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and in computer vision applications, such as autonomous car navigation. “To directly compare learning algorithms to brains, we need to train them on the same experiences,” says Samantha Wood at Indiana University Bloomington. She first raised chicks in a box where the only visual stimulation came from a rotating 3D object presented on a screen. After the first week, she ran each chick through hundreds of test trials that showed that same object on one screen — presented from both familiar and unfamiliar perspectives — and displayed a second unfamiliar object on another screen. The chicks spent more of their time near the first object, suggesting they had imprinted on it. The researcher then created a virtual simulation (仿造物) of the set-up and used a virtual agent to move through it while looking around and recording a first-person view. That provided tens of thousands of simulated images for training and evaluating four transformer models. The AI models had just 300 milliseconds to learn from each simulated image — approximating (接近于) how long biological neurons (神经元) fire after being presented with an image. The researcher found that the AIs could learn to recognise a 3D object as quickly and accurately as the chicks. The study is “a great piece of work” in comparing machine performance with biological brains, says Antone Martinho-Truswell at the University of Sydney. But he also notes,“We might be able to say that the chick ‘saw’ its imprinting object, but that will have a component (成分) of experience to it.Particularly as imprinting is to do with identifying its mother, it would be unsurprising if that visual experience were combined with a suite of other components of experience: fear yielding to comfort, for example, as the chick comes to regard the object as its imprinted ‘mother’.”1.Why do newborn birds engage in imprinting?( )A.To enhance their navigation skills.B.To develop their social behaviour.C.To improve their communication with other birds.D.To establish a protective connection with a guardian.2.How did Samantha Wood conduct the initial experiment with chicks?( )A.She raised them in an environment with a rotating visual element.B.She exposed them to various visual stimulations in the wild.C.She showed them various moving objects on screens.D.She observed their behaviour in a natural habitat.3.What role did the virtual simulation play in the research?( )A.To imitate the natural behaviour of birds.B.To assess the effectiveness of virtual agents.C.To examine the AI models’ ability to identify a 3D object.D.To create a visually diverse environment for the chicks.4.According to Antone Martinho-Truswell, what poses a challenge in comparing machine performance with biological brains?( )A.Rapid learning pace of AI models.B.Recreating real-world environments for experiments.C.The complexity and diversity of biological experiences.D.Conducting additional experiments with a range of animals.Ⅱ. Jack was new to Woodberry Forest School this year.He carried a secret burden: a stutter (口吃) that often brought about laughter from his classmates. This made him very upset.Shy and reserved, Jack chose to fade into the background rather than draw attention to himself. He felt like an outsider, never quite fitting in. Jack was eager to exchange ideas with his classmates, but afraid of getting into trouble.Jack’s science teacher, Katherine, a warm and caring woman often wearing a smile, noticed Jack’s stutter and shyness. She observed how Jack struggled to express himself in class and how he would shy away when called upon to speak. Determined to lend a hand, Katherine took Jack under her wing, encouraging him to embrace bravery and believe in his own abilities.Subsequently, Katherine adopted a set of systematic methods to help him.She was glad to find the potential in him, the intelligence and creativity that lay hidden beneath his stutter.Whenever possible, Katherine was always ready to praise his efforts, always declaring, “You are so great!” Whenever Jack stumbled over his words, Katherine always smiled at him encouragingly, providing him with the strength to continue.Day by day, Jack found himself speaking with greater confidence and fluency. One day, Katherine announced that each student should give a presentation of a science project in front of the class.Jack’s heart sank, the familiar fear and anxiety wrapping around him.How could he possibly stand before his classmates to give his ideas clearly, knowing that they would laugh at him? As the presentation drew near, Jack’s anxiety mounted. Then came the big day.He watched his classmates take turns to walk up to the front. They gave their presentation with confidence and backed to their seats with satisfaction. However, while Jack was waiting for his turn, his heart beat so violently that he felt as if he were sitting on pins and needles. It was finally his turn. When Jack finished his presentation, the room erupted into applause. UNIT 4 Living with technologyⅠ. Just after hatching, many birds learn ...stay near a parent. She first raised chicks in a box where the only visual stimulation came from a rotating 3D object presented on a screen. Ⅱ. It was finally his turn.Jack stood up slowly and edged towards the front, his hands trembling. His classmates looked on, ready to see what was in store for Jack.He stood there tongue-tied with his face turning pale. When he looked around the classroom, Katherine was just smiling at him encouragingly. So Jack took a deep breath and concentrated on his presentation.Words flowed from his lips, despite some pauses and repetitions. He even added gestures to better express himself. It seemed that confidence had found him. When Jack finished his presentation, the room erupted into applause. The applause washed over Jack, and with it came a wave of confidence. His grateful eyes met Katherine’s, her smile now a symbol of his journey to self-assurance.No longer defined by his stutter, Jack felt a sense of belonging. His presentation wasn’t just an assignment; it was a testament to his ability to overcome personal obstacles. As the room quieted, Jack returned to his seat, his heart lighter, knowing that he had made a lasting impression on his classmates and himself.2 / 2Part Ⅰ 一维重点突破 It won’t be long before I leave my senior school. Now I’m engaged in (prepare) for the coming College Entrance Examination. And I’m buried in studying in order to gain access to a key university.I know I have no alternative but to struggle for my dream. In the wrong hands, such a book could prove as complicated to process as the computer code (代码) that powers AI but, thankfully, Campbell has more than two decades’ professional experience translating the heady into the understandable. She writes from the practical angle of a business person rather than as an academic, making for a guide which is highly accessible and informative and which, by the close, will make you feel almost as smart as AI. As we soon come to learn from AI by Design, AI is already super-smart and will become more capable, moving from the current generation of “narrow-AI” to Artificial General Intelligence. From there, Campbell says, will come Artificial Dominant Intelligence. This is why Campbell has set out to raise awareness of AI and its future now — several decades before these developments are expected to take place. She says it is essential that we keep control of artificial intelligence, or risk being sidelined and perhaps even worse. Campbell’s point is to wake up those responsible for AI — the technology companies and world leaders — so they are on the same page as all the experts currently developing it.She explains we are at a “tipping point” in history and must act now to prevent an extinction-level event for humanity. We need to consider how we want our future with AI to pan out.Such structured thinking, followed by global regulation, will enable us to achieve greatness rather than our downfall. AI will affect us all, and if you only read one book on the subject, this is it.32.What does the phrase “In the wrong hands” in paragraph 2 probably mean?( )A.If read by someone poorly educated. In the wrong hands, such a book could prove as complicated toprocess as the computer code (代码) that powers AI but, thankfully,Campbell has more than two decades’ professional experience translatingthe heady into the understandable. She writes from the practical angle of abusiness person rather than as an academic, making for a guide which ishighly accessible and informative and which, by the close, will makeyou feel almost as smart as AI. As we soon come to learn from AI by Design, AI is already super-smart and will become more capable, moving from the current generationof “narrow-AI” to Artificial General Intelligence. From there,Campbell says, will come Artificial Dominant Intelligence. This is whyCampbell has set out to raise awareness of AI and its future now — severaldecades before these developments are expected to take place. She says itis essential that we keep control of artificial intelligence, or risk beingsidelined and perhaps even worse. Campbell’s point is to wake up those responsible for AI — thetechnology companies and world leaders — so they are on the same pageas all the experts currently developing it.She explains we are at a“tipping point” in history and must act now to prevent an extinction-level event for humanity. We need to consider how we want our future withAI to pan out.Such structured thinking, followed by global regulation, will enable us to achieve greatness rather than our downfall. AI will affect us all, and if you only read one book on the subject, this is it.32. What does the phrase “In the wrong hands” in paragraph 2 probablymean?( )A. If read by someone poorly educated.B. Transformers are generic learning systems that can be trained to perform a wide variety of tasks, making them useful in both AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and in computer vision applications, such as autonomous car navigation. “To directly compare learning algorithms to brains, we need totrain them on the same experiences,” says Samantha Wood at IndianaUniversity Bloomington. She first raised chicks in a box where the onlyvisual stimulation came from a rotating 3D object presented on ascreen. After the first week, she ran each chick through hundreds of testtrials that showed that same object on one screen — presented from bothfamiliar and unfamiliar perspectives — and displayed a second unfamiliarobject on another screen. The chicks spent more of their time near the firstobject, suggesting they had imprinted on it. The researcher then created a virtual simulation (仿造物) of theset-up and used a virtual agent to move through it while looking aroundand recording a first-person view. That provided tens of thousands ofsimulated images for training and evaluating four transformer models. The AI models had just 300 milliseconds to learn from each simulatedimage — approximating (接近于) how long biological neurons (神经元) fire after being presented with an image. The researcher found thatthe AIs could learn to recognise a 3D object as quickly and accurately asthe chicks. The study is “a great piece of work” in comparing machineperformance with biological brains, says Antone Martinho-Truswell atthe University of Sydney. But he also notes,“We might be able to saythat the chick ‘saw’ its imprinting object, but that will have acomponent (成分) of experience to it.Particularly as imprinting is to dowith identifying its mother, it would be unsurprising if that visualexperience were combined with a suite of other components ofexperience: fear yielding to comfort, for example, as the chick comesto regard the object as its imprinted ‘mother’.” 1. Jack was eager to exchange ideas with his classmates, but afraid ofgetting into trouble.Jack’s science teacher, Katherine, a warm andcaring woman often wearing a smile, noticed Jack’s stutter andshyness. She observed how Jack struggled to express himself in class andhow he would shy away when called upon to speak. Determined to lend a hand, Katherine took Jack under her wing, encouraging him to embrace bravery and believe in his ownabilities.Subsequently, Katherine adopted a set of systematic methods tohelp him.She was glad to find the potential in him, the intelligence andcreativity that lay hidden beneath his stutter.Whenever possible,Katherine was always ready to praise his efforts, always declaring,“You are so great!” Whenever Jack stumbled over his words,Katherine always smiled at him encouragingly, providing him with thestrength to continue.Day by day, Jack found himself speaking withgreater confidence and fluency. One day, Katherine announced that each student should give apresentation of a science project in front of the class.Jack’s heart sank, the familiar fear and anxiety wrapping around him.How could he possiblystand before his classmates to give his ideas clearly, knowing that theywould laugh at him? As the presentation drew near, Jack’s anxietymounted. Then came the big day.He watched his classmates take turns towalk up to the front. They gave their presentation with confidence andbacked to their seats with satisfaction. However, while Jack was waitingfor his turn, his heart beat so violently that he felt as if he were sitting onpins and needles. It was finally his turn. When Jack finished his presentation, the room erupted into applause. It was finally his turn.Jack stood up slowly and edged towards thefront, his hands trembling. His classmates looked on, ready to see whatwas in store for Jack.He stood there tongue-tied with his face turningpale. When he looked around the classroom, Katherine was just smilingat him encouragingly. So Jack took a deep breath and concentrated on hispresentation.Words flowed from his lips, despite some pauses andrepetitions. He even added gestures to better express himself. It seemedthat confidence had found him. When Jack finished his presentation, the room erupted intoapplause. The applause washed over Jack, and with it came a wave ofconfidence. His grateful eyes met Katherine’s, her smile now a symbolof his journey to self-assurance.No longer defined by his stutter, Jackfelt a sense of belonging. His presentation wasn’t just an assignment; itwas a testament to his ability to overcome personal obstacles. As the roomquieted, Jack returned to his seat, his heart lighter, knowing that hehad made a lasting impression on his classmates and himself. UNIT 4 Living with technology.docx UNIT 4 Living with technology.pptx UNIT 4 Living with technology(练习,含解析).docx
