阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Most Visited Places in New York City
New York City has no shortage of iconic attractions, and there’s a reason why millions of people come to see them each year. I’ve lived here long enough to appreciate famous landmarks!
Fifth Avenue
Fifth Avenue is one of the most famous streets in New York, and walking it always feels like you’re in a movie. I usually start around 59th Street, and head downtown towards the New York Public Library. Along the way, you pass major shopping landmarks like Saks, and the Apple Store, and some iconic spots like St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Rockefeller Center.
Flatiron Building
The Flatiron Building is one of NYC’s most iconic landmarks, and even though it’s currently under restoration, it still draws crowds every day. The shape is instantly recognizable, and I’ve never walked past it without seeing someone taking a photo. I usually grab a coffee from one of the nearby cafes and take a walk around the park to admire the view.
Museum of Modern Art
The Museum of Modern Art is one of the most famous museums in NYC. I still remember the first time I stood in front of Van Gogh’s Starry Night-it’s one of those moments you don’t forget. The museum is packed with modern and contemporary art from icons like Picasso, and Rothko. The layout is clean, with enough variety to keep teens, art lovers and first-time visitors all engaged.
Lincoln Center
Lincoln Center is one of the most iconic cultural landmarks in NYC, and it always feels like an event just to be there. I’ve come here for ballet, opera and live concerts. The architecture alone is worth seeing, especially at night when the plaza is shining and the fountain is lit. Even if you’re not catching a performance, you can take a guided tour, explore the nearby public art, or just sit by the fountain.

2. What makes the Museum of Modern Art attractive to visitors
A. Its low entrance fee for visitors. B. Its large collection of ancient art.
C. The chance to have a cup of coffee. D. The clean layout and diverse artworks.
3. Why does the author think Lincoln Center always feels like an event
A. It is surrounded by famous shops. B. It offers a lot of cultural activities.

One of my earliest memories is of my father sitting me down at our kitchen table with canvases, paints, and brushes. He taught me how to blend colors and use different materials. Whenever we felt inspired, we set out all our materials and painted what our hearts desired.
My father grew up in a small village in the Dominican Republic. Despite not having many materials available, he created art with whatever he had. My father saved his money to buy paints and colored pencils to draw on the walls around his home. When he was 15, he arrived in America alone and stayed with his aunt in Florida for a while before finishing high school in New York with another aunt. He studied very hard. Eventually, my father was able to obtain his citizenship.
As I got older, he continued to give me lessons, teaching me different brush strokes and how to take care of my art supplies. He taught me to find beauty in everything and everyone around me. I grew to love drawing people, as I could highlight the physical features that make everyone unique and beautiful.
It wasn’t until I began looking carefully into my father’s paintings and the work of popular artists on Instagram that I started to be more critical of my work. I started to worry that I could never live up to my father’s talent. My simple, two-dimensional (2D) drawings fell flat compared to his realistic landscapes. Going through my sketchbooks and portfolios, I found fault in all my drawings. Art was my favorite thing in the world but I started to believe I wasn’t good at it. Instead of working toward improving, I decided to give up drawing.
My father noticed that I had been drawing and painting less and told me, “Mia, you should audition for the school. I wish I’d had an opportunity to study art like this when I was a kid.” My father’s bravery and strength are things that I desire to have. So over the next few months, I worked on my portfolio. Looking back at my pictures, I can see how much I have improved since then. The school must have seen potential in my drawings because I got in! It was eye-opening to attend a college that specializes in the arts. I learned to embrace my individuality and my talent. I have become more open about sharing my artworks and receiving constructive criticism, which raises my self-belief in my art.
4 Why does the author introduce her father’s experience in paragraph 2
A. To prove that art is a way to fight poverty.
B. To contrast her life with the difficulties her father experienced.
C. To criticize the lack of educational chances in rural areas.
D. To illustrate the roots of her father’s influence on her.
5. What do the underlined words “fell flat” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Outperformed other works. B. Lacked visual appeal.
C. Had complex structures. D. Looked extremely realistic.
6. What kind of person is the author’s father
A. Brave and carefree. B. Ambitious but dependent.
C. Hardworking and supportive. D. Creative but stubborn.
7. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Talent guarantees admission to art programs.
B. Progress can be achieved through trial and error.
C. Art is about following established rules.
D. Confidence comes from accepting imperfection.
The intersection of art and technology has always fascinated humanity. Nowhere is this more evident than in the world of poetry, where artificial intelligence (AI) is starting to make significant steps. AI poets are computer programs designed to generate poems, modeled after the style, rhythm, and even some emotional aspects of human works.
AI has the ability to analyze vast databases of existing poems, identifying patterns in language, rhyme structures. Using machine-learning patterns, some AI poets can generate new lines of poetry.
However, a fundamental question remains: can AI-generated poetry truly replace the creative wisdom of human-made poetry Human poets draw on a lifetime of experiences, emotions, and cultural contexts to create their works. They use language not just as a means of communication but as a way to express the indescribable. In contrast, AI operates based on data and pattern. While it can produce technically perfect poems, it lacks the lived experiences and subjective feelings that give human poetry its quality of being true.
Poetry critics often point out that the best poems are those that resonate (共鸣) with readers, challenging their perspectives and bringing strong feelings. AI-generated poems, despite their technical complexity, often fail to achieve this emotional reflection. For instance, a human poem about love may capture the pain and joy of romantic relationships while an AI-generated poem on the same topic may seem lacking individual personality and imagination.
Supporters of AI poets claim that it can popularize the art form, making poetry creation accessible to anyone with a computer. AI could inspire a new generation of poets. Additionally, AI can introduce novel combinations of words and ideas, expanding the boundaries of what is considered poetry.
As the debate continues, the AI in poetry forces us to re-evaluate our understanding of creativity, art, and the human experience and challenges us to consider what makes a poem truly great.
8. What is the primary function of AI poets according to the passage
A. To boost human poets’ creativity. B. To teach people how to write poetry.
C. To analyze problems of existing poems. D. To create poems based on human poetry.
9. What is a major limitation of AI-generated poetry compared to human poetry
A. It cannot identify patterns in language. B. It cannot reach the real emotional depth.
C. It cannot produce technically perfect poems. D. It cannot generate poems with correct rhymes.
10. What is the potential benefit of AI poets
A. It can analyze traditional poetry. B. It can ensure the quality of poetry.
C. It can help more people create poetry. D. It can quickly evaluate human poetry.
11. What is the author’s overall attitude toward AI poets
A. Fairly objective. B. Entirely positive.
C. Quite negative. D. Highly critical.
A new study warns that extreme temperatures, mainly heat, could cause up to 2.3 million deaths in Europe by 2100 if nations fail to reduce carbon emissions (碳排放) and adapt to hotter climates. While cold weather currently causes more deaths in Europe, researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine predict heat-related deaths will rise sharply as global warming speeds up.
Using climate models and data from 854 cities, the study finds that as it warms, cold-related deaths decline slowly, but heat deaths rise rapidly. Southern Europe — including Italy, Spain and Greece — faces the highest risks. In contrast, Scandinavia and the UK may see fewer temperature-related deaths due to milder winters. However, even with strong emission cuts and improved adaptation efforts, overall temperature-related deaths will still increase as the planet warms.
The Mediterranean region, described as a “climate hotspot”, is warming faster than other areas. Malta, for example, could see heat deaths rise by 269 per 100, 000 people by 2100, while Ireland’s rate might drop slightly. Wealthier Western European countries are in a better situation to adapt than Eastern Europe.
Recent heatwaves have already caused thousands of deaths in Europe, such as the 2003 event that killed around 70, 000. Major southern cities like Barcelona, Rome and Naples could face hundreds of thousands of additional deaths this century. Without urgent action, the study estimates over 5. 8 million heat-related deaths linked to climate change, though colder regions might see 3.5 million fewer cold-related deaths.
Experts emphasize the need for adaptation strategies, such as air conditioning, green spaces and cooling centers, especially in aging populations and older cities with limited facilities. Southern Europe’s combination of extreme heat, older housing and low air conditioning use makes it highly endangered.
“Temperatures in cities like Rome already reach dangerous levels,” says Dr. Courtney Howard, a climate health expert. “This poses severe risks for older adults and those without cooling options.” The study highlights the urgent need for global emission reductions and local climate planning to protect communities from rising heat threats.
12. What can be learned about the changes in temperature-related deaths in Europe
A. Both types of deaths increase equally.
B. Cold deaths will grow considerably by 2100.
C. Cold-related deaths disappear completely.
D. Heat deaths rise faster than the decline in cold deaths.
13. What makes Eastern Europe less adaptable than Western Europe to rising heat
A. Warmer climate. B. Limited financial resources.
C. Aging populations. D. Relaxed emission policies.
14. What does the reference to the 2003 heatwave illustrate
A. Benefits of green spaces. B. Success of cooling centers.
C. Deadly impact of extreme heat. D. Historic decrease in cold deaths.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Air Conditioning Can Save Scandinavia
B. Southern Europe’s Serious Housing Crisis
C. Climate Change Threatens Millions in Europe
D. Urban Heat Islands and Their Policy Solutions

Quick stress management techniques for immediate relief
How do you manage stress at work When stress hits, you can't always take a long break easily. Stress at work doesn’t have to take over your day or your life. ___16___
Practice deep breathing exercises
One of the simplest and most effective ways to calm your nervous system is through deep breathing to take our body out of that “fight or flight” mode. ___17___. “Inhale for four seconds, hold for four seconds, exhale for four seconds - repeat and do this three times,” Dr. Kass says.
Use progressive muscle relaxation
Progressive muscle relaxation is a technique that helps release built-up tension by systematically tensing and relaxing different muscle groups. Start by clenching your fists tightly for five seconds, then slowly release them. Move up your body and then release. Do the same with your neck, face, and legs. ___18___
Try mindfulness and grounding techniques
___19___. A simple grounding exercise is the “5-4-3-2-1” technique: Identify five things you see, four things you hear, three things you can touch, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. This method helps break the cycle of anxious thoughts by refocusing your mind on what’s happening right now.
___20___
It’s easy to fall into the trap of taking on too much, but learning to say no is essential for stress management. Set limits on your workload by communicating what’s realistic and protecting your personal time. This might mean turning off e-mail notices after work hours and setting specific “focus times” during the day.
A. Set clear boundaries
B. Exercise and participate in physical activity
C. Exercising at least once a week can significantly decrease your sense of stress
D. A few deep breaths can signal your brain to relax and restore a sense of balance
E. By the end, you’ll likely feel a noticeable difference in how relaxed your body is
F. Fortunately, there are quick and effective ways to manage stress in the workplace
G. When stress seems too much to handle, focusing on the present moment can be really useful

On a freezing December evening, 17-year-old Lily hurried through the snowy streets after her part-time shift at the bookstore. Her worn coat offered little warmth, and the weight of her mother’s medical bills pressed heavily on her mind. Turning a corner, she noticed an elderly man struggling to lift a fallen delivery box near a grocery store. Without hesitation, she rushed to help.
“Thank you, young lady,” the man wheezed, adjusting his glasses. His hands trembled slightly, and Lily spotted a fresh cut on his palm. “You’re hurt!” she exclaimed, pulling a handkerchief from her bag. As she bandaged his hand, the man introduced himself as Mr. Thompson, the owner of the store. “Wait here,” he said, disappearing inside. He returned with a thermos of hot chocolate and a thick scarf. “For your kindness,” he insisted, memories of being helped flashing through his mind. Touched, Lily accepted the gifts, her eyes stinging.
While reorganizing the scarf, she discovered a handwritten note tucked in its folds: “To the girl with a heart of gold — check the bookstore’s bulletin board tomorrow.” Puzzled, she arrived early the next morning to find a job offer posted: “Wanted: Assistant Manager. Priority is given to those who’ve shown exceptional sympathy.”

【答案】 Last week, I took part in a volunteer activity aimed at helping the elderly master smartphone usage. We visited a local community center, where we patiently taught senior citizens how to make video calls, and shop online. What’s more, we guided them step by step, demonstrating each function repeatedly.
This experience left a profound impact on me. Seeing the seniors’ excited faces when they finally succeeded made me realize that these seemingly simple skills can greatly enrich their lives. Volunteering not only allowed me to share my knowledge but also taught me the importance of patience and empathy.

Later, she found a thank-you note tucked in the register: “You’re my miracle.” Lily smiled — this chain of kindness, started by a stranger’s hot chocolate, would continue growing.
