It was just after 17:00 on a mid-September evening at a historical Church in Harlem, New York City. Mostly the low-income black neighborhood sat at dining tables. In front of them was a menu listing three courses, which they only saw on TV. Each dish was prepared with “leftover” ingredients(食材), offered free of charge and placed alongside a blue card that read “you are loved” in hand-written script.
This-is-one of 14 community centers created around the world in cities like Milan, Paris, Mérida, Lima, Sydney and now New York through three-Michelin starred chef Massimo Bottura’s Food for Soul project. He started the project in 2016 with his wife, Lara Gilmore, to help fight the global problem of food waste-by using ingredients that might otherwise be thrown away by suppliers and to give socially and economically vulnerable people access to high quality meals.
Partnering with architects, artists and community leaders, the project is transforming spaces, which are not fully taken advantage of, such as churches and even a historical home into intentionally designed cultural centers equipped with kitchens, dining rooms and other facilities that help create a sense of well-being, connection and inclusion.
When I asked Bottura why he created such thoughtful. meals within beautifully appointed spaces for the low-income, he told me that everyone deserves respect and beauty-and of course, healthy food. “They come in and are completely lost because they’re not used to coming into beautiful places, like this. But once they’re here, they realize that this place is their place. It’s not my place,” he said.
Bottura’s philosophy is one that comes from the heart. T-shirts worm by volunteers at his community centers say “cooking is an act of love”, and he approaches the food served there with as much care as he does at his restaurants — “probably even more”, he said since the diners are extremely stressed and need healthy food to feel better. Bottura insists that it’s important to change the language around the food served in his community centers.
24.Why does the author describe such a scene in the first paragraph
A.To introduce Bottura’s project. B.To show the appeal of the dishes.
C.To emphasize the warm atmosphere. D.To explain how the event is organized.
25.What does the underlined word “vulnerable” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Privileged. B.Independent. C.Conservative. D.Disadvantaged.
26.Which of the following best describes Massimo Bottura
A.Skilled and strict. B.Caring and considerate.
C.Wealthy and humorous. D.Economical and influential.
27.What fundamental philosophy does Massimo Bottura express
A.Respect and beauty are for all. B.Beautiful places inspire respect.
C.Cooking should be a profession. D.Community centers bring people together.
Precision spraying is the future. This is where AI comes in. For instance, Dyson Farming, an agricultural project led by James Dyson, a British inventor, is using a process developed by Bilberry, a French company. This involves some cameras spread along the long arms of an agricultural sprayer. The pictures taken by the cameras are analyzed with image-recognition software trained to recognize weeds. The system then individually turns the arms’ 144 spray heads on or off whenever pesticides are to be applied.
Even greater levels of precision spraying are promised by AgZen, a firm from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Its team came up with a monitoring system called RealCoverage. Capable of being adapted to existing sprayers, RealCoverage consists of two camera-based sensors on each spray arm, one placed slightly ahead and the other just behind. As the sprayer moves along, the firm’s AI identifies images of leaves caught by the first camera and compares them to images obtained by the second. This allows the number of droplets left hanging onto the leaves to be calculated.
AI spraying provides a huge increase in the depth of knowledge available to farmers, essentially allowing them to measure spray results in terms of millilitres (毫升) per leaf, instead of litres per acre. As the system works with other spray technologies, AgZen is also discussing possible cooperation with equipment suppliers and contract-spraying businesses.
28.What problem is presented in paragraph 1
A.The overuse of pesticides. B.The health cost of pesticides.
C.The rising prices of pesticides. D.The lack of effective pesticides.
29.Which of the following can describe the spraying of Bilberry’s system
A.Inaccurate and labour-intensive. B.Harmless and widespread.
C.Costly and old-fashioned. D.Targeted and effective.
30.What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about RealCoverage
A.Its development process. B.Its operating mechanism.
C.Its historical background. D.Its environmental impact.
31.What can we say about AI spraying
A.It still needs further trials. B.It will soon be adopted globally.
C.It will save farmers enormous costs. D.It has made cameras a thing of the past.
People’s first memories are all autobiographical (自传式的), or memories of significant experiences in their lives, and these events typically didn’t happen before the age of 2 or 3. In fact, most people can’t remember things from the first few years of their lives — a phenomenon researchers have called infantile amnesia.
However, research suggests that infants can form other kinds of memories. Within the first few days of life, infants can recall their own mother’s face and distinguish it from the face of a stranger. A few months later, infants can demonstrate that they remember lots of familiar faces by smiling most at the ones they see most often.
But if so, why do people experience infantile amnesia Though it still isn’t clear whether it’s because we can’t form autobiographical memories, or whether we just have no way to retrieve (找回) them, scientists have a few guesses.
One is that autobiographical memories require you to have some sense of self. Researchers have tested this ability using a mirror recognition task called the rouge test. It involves marking a baby’s nose with a spot of red lipstick.
Researchers then place the infant in front of a mirror. Infants younger than 18 months just smile at the baby in the reflection, not showing any evidence of recognizing themselves or the red mark on their face. Between 18 and 24 months, infants touch their own nose, even looking embarrassed, suggesting that they connect the red dot in the mirror with their own face — they start to form some sense of self.
Another possible explanation is that because infants don’t have language until later in the second year of life, they can’t form narratives about their own lives that they can later recall. Finally, the hippocampus (海马体), which is the region of the brain that’s largely responsible for memory, isn’t fully developed in the infancy period.
Scientists will continue to investigate how these factors may contribute to infantile amnesia.
32.What can infants do in their first few months
A.Memorize most of their family members.
B.Distinguish between familiar and unfamiliar faces.
C.Remember a string of events from the recent past.
D.Identify their own reflections in the mirror.
33.What do infants tend to do after 18 months, according to the rouge test
A.See their reflections as themselves. B.Ignore the marks on their faces.
C.Enjoy playing with their reflections. D.Show a strong interest in the mirror.
34.What could be a cause of infantile amnesia, according to the text
A.Infants’ inability to recall memories. B.Infants’ immature hippocampus.
C.Infants’ undeveloped communication skills. D.Infants’ unsteady autobiographical memories.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.When do babies start remembering things B.Why is it hard to retrieve lost memories
C.How do kids form their first memories D.Why can’t we remember being a baby
Many students feel like they simply do not have strong memory skills. Fortunately, though, anyone can train and develop their memorizing abilities. Here are some simple tips to try.
Link it. Connect the information you are trying to memorize to something that you already know. Material in isolation (孤立) is more difficult to remember than material that is connected to other concepts. For example, say you are trying to memorize the fact that water at sea level boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit, and 212 happens to be the first three digits of your best friend’s phone number. 36 It’s a crazy link, but it can help that fact to stick.
Self-test. Test yourself every so often by actively recalling the information you are trying to study. Make sure to actively test yourself. 37 Often, students think they remember material just because it is familiar to them when they reread it. Instead, ask yourself questions and force yourself to remember it without looking at the answer or material. 38 You can then go back to one of the memory tricks to help yourself memorize it.
39 For a concept to move from your temporary working memory to your long-term memory, two things need to happen: the concept should be memorable and it should be repeated. Use repetition to firmly plant information in your memory. Repetition techniques can involve things like flash cards and self-testing. Space out your studying and repetition over several days. 40 Spacing it out and gradually extending the times in between can help us become more certain of our mastery and lock the concepts into place.
A.Use distributed practice.
B.Repetition is never enough.
C.Do not simply reread notes or a textbook.
D.This repetition is powerful for long-term memory.
E.Then increase the time in between each study session.
F.This will help you identify areas you are struggling with.
G.Link these two by imagining throwing your phone into a boiling ocean.

Maeja was responsible for watching her younger brother, Jungho, and sister, Kyunghee, as they walked home from school. The crowded streets of Yeosu, South Korea, were filled with bicycles and cars rushing by. Jungho and Kyunghee frequently complained of being tired and hungry, so they stopped to rest.
While they were resting, Maeja noticed a street banner (横幅) announcing the First Annual Walking Race to Jasan Park, with the prize being a washing machine. Maeja thought it would be fun to participate. She walked to and from school with her brother and sister every day and had hiked in Jasan Park with her father, Appa. However, she doubted her ability to walk fast enough to win.
When they finally arrived home, Maeja’s mother Umma was busy in the kitchen, preparing dinner on their single burner stove (炉具). By the time Appa arrived, dinner was ready. They all sat together, sharing stories about their day. After dinner, Maeja helped Umma wash dishes. When Umma pulled out two metal laundry tubs (洗衣盆), her smile disappeared. Laundry was a tiring task that caused Umma pain, as they did not own a washing machine. Years of washing clothes by hand had left Umma’s hands rough and worn. Witnessing Umma’s struggle, Maeja’s heart ached with a deep desire to relieve her stress.
Then, Maeja remembered the banner she had seen earlier that day. Her eyes lit up with a sense of determination as she told Umma about the upcoming race and the grand prize of a washing machine. She spoke with an enthusiasm that temporarily lifted the tired lines from Umma’s face.
Umma listened, but she had doubts. “Maeja, you cannot expect to win,” she said, her voice full of concern. The thought of her daughter being disappointed weighed heavily on her.
Nevertheless, Maeja was determined. She looked around their humble home, at the single burner stove and the metal laundry tubs. She wanted to make a difference, no matter how small. With a hopeful heart and a determined spirit, she decided to participate in the race.注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150词左右;2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

Jungho and Kyunghee cheered, their eyes shining with pride for their sister. Maeja felt a deep sense of achievement, knowing that her efforts had made a real difference to her family. In that moment, she knew she would always keep walking, always striving to make life better for those she loved.
