The National Weather Service in Des Moines, Iowa, posted early Saturday morning that initial reports indicate at least 10 tornadoes (龙卷风) struck central Iowa in Friday’s storms, based on initial damage information.
For Austin Ehlers, a firefighter in Persia, a city about 15 minutes from Minden, the tornado destroyed his grandfather’s home. “He lives just outside of Minden, right in the path where the tornado took,” Ehlers said. “After we cleared everything in Persia, we jumped in the trucks and went to Minden and helped. I found out my grandpa’s house was completely gone, and he’s basically lost everything.”
Despite Ehlers’ grandfather’s house being destroyed, his grandfather was uninjured in the tornado, he said. “He told me he just got into the basement and was getting ready to shut the door when all his windows shattered and glass almost hit him in the back,” Ehlers said. “It was close. Real close.”
A tornado touched down just west of Pleasant Hill, just east of Des Moines, sweeping across town, injuring one person and damaging homes. Pleasant Hill Fire Department Chief Jamie Xayavong told reporters at a news conference Saturday that the person’s injury was not life-threatening. However,18 damaged homes in the town were no longer inhabitable. The fire chief did not know how strong the tornado was, though it left several other homes with moderate (中等的) or minor damage. She indicated that more damage reports could come in as recovery continues.
Those in the area were in “a life-threatening situation,” the fire chief said. “Flying debris (碎片) may be deadly to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be destroyed. Considerable damage to homes, businesses, and vehicles is likely and complete destruction is possible.”
Several of the city’s cross-streets were completely blocked by emergency crews and tree debris. Traffic seemed to be trying to leave the surrounding neighborhoods, which were without power. At the height of the storm, more than 10,000 customers in the downtown Des Moines were without power.
8.What does the underlined word “shattered” in Paragraph 3 mean

DeepSeek, released (发布) in May 2023 by a former AI student-turned manager, says it has found a way to match the performance of its U.S. competitors in AI, and at a small part of the cost. It had already drawn attention with a series of high performance large language models (LLMs). Unlike ChatGPT and most of its Western competitors, DeepSeek’s LLMs are open source, which means users can view and change the source code (编码) to improve it. Now, DeepSeek says it has taken a major step forward with its latest model, V3. “It outperforms other open-source models and achieves performance comparable to leading closed-source models,” the company says.
AI observers take it seriously. DeepSeek has “closed the gap with some of the world’s best LLMs”, even outperforming OpenAI’s latest model, says political scientist Jeffrey Ding of George Washington University. If DeepSeek V3 passes further checks, “it will be a highly impressive display of research and engineering under resource shortage,” computer scientist Andrej Karpathy wrote.
DeepSeek says its approach reduces the computing power needed to train the model and produces more efficient (高效的) responses to requests. Only a part of the expert networks within the model is trained for a task. Then, a gating (门控) network sends requests to the expert networks best suited to answer. The increased efficiency saves money, DeepSeek proudly says. It says it spent just $5.6 million to train V3 — far less than the expected $78 million it cost OpenAI to train ChatGPT.
Unlike most of its major competitors, DeepSeek is not supported by one of China’s high-tech companies, which are developing various technologies. The company’s primary focus is on creations and the development of high-performing Chinese LLMs.
Although DeepSeek has made major progress, observers see challenges ahead. Its open-source approach means competitors can improve upon DeepSeek’s methods. And the company will absolutely continue to struggle in the future to push the boundaries (前沿) of software and systems creation to stay in the game.
12.What do we know about DeepSeek
A.Its LLMs are free to use. B.It costs more than its competitors.
C.Its performance is unsatisfying. D.Its V3 is the largest at present.
13.What does DeepSeek take pride in
A.Its newly-invented language. B.Its relatively lower cost.
C.Its popularity among users. D.Its outstanding manager.
14.What is DeepSeek’s original intention
A.To get the most out of small costs. B.To compete with leading companies.
C.To create better LLMs of China. D.To become a world-class high-tech company.
15.What can we infer about the future of DeepSeek from the last paragraph
A.Ungrown. B.Promising. C.Profitable. D.Challenging.
A rare find in space has drawn the attention of scientists across the globe. The newly identified asteroid(小行星)is nearly the size of a football field and was first spotted on December 27,2024, by the El Sauce Observatory in Chile, which was named “2024 YR4”.
Based on its brightness, astronomers estimate that the asteroid is between 40—90m wide. Nearly the size of a football field, the asteroid’s movements will be closely watched by astronomers and other experts including NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who have calculated the current risk of the asteroid connecting with Earth as around one and a half per cent(1.6 per cent). “At this point, it’s ‘Let’s pay a lot of attention and observe it as much as we can,’” The Planetary Society chief scientist Dr Bruce Betts told AFP.
As 2024 YR4 continues its oval-shaped(椭圆形的), four-year orbit, it will swing through the inner planets before shooting past Mars and out toward Jupiter. For now, it’s getting away from Earth quickly—its next close pass won’t come until 2028. “The probability is very good that not only will this not hit Earth, but at some point in the next months to few years, that probability will go to zero,” said Dr Betts.
The best known asteroid impact occurred 66 million years ago, when a nearly-10km-wide space rock caused a global winter, wiping out the dinosaurs and 75 per cent of all species. By contrast, 2024 YR4 is closer to an asteroid that struck Earth more than a century ago.
The 1908 Tunguska Event, when an asteroid or comet fragment(彗星碎片)measuring 30—50m exploded over Siberia, flattened about 80 million trees across 2,000 km sq. That fragment blew up in the sky rather than leaving a large hole in the ground, and 2024 YR4 would be expected to do the same. “We can calculate the energy... using the mass and the speed,” Dr Betts said.
16.What will astronomers do to 2024 YR4
A.Observe it closely. B.Calculate its orbit.
C.Measure its size. D.Do experiments with it.
17.What can we infer about 2024 YR4 from Paragraph 3
A.It’s oval in shape.
B.It travels around inner planets.
C.It will hit Earth one day.
D.It’ll pass Earth again in a few years.
18.What would happen if 2024 YR4 should hit Earth
A.Most species would be wiped out.
B.A large hole would be left behind.
C.The earth would become extremely hot.
D.Vast areas of land would suffer.
19.What can be the best title of this text
A.A New Asteroid Was Found and Watched
B.The Earth Might Be Hit by an Asteroid
C.An Asteroid Will Change Earth’s History
D.Scientists Keep Track of Multiple Asteroids
The more I travel, the more I feel like I understand the world, the people in it, and, often, myself. Getting off the beaten path, meeting locals, and visiting incredible sites have made my life better. 20 While I go into a lot of depth in my new book on budget travel, I want to share some tips with you.
Pack light. Write down a list of essentials, cut it in half, and then only pack that! Take half the clothes you think you will need. 21 It’s OK to wear the same T-shirt a few days in a row.
Stay in hostels. They are cheap, they organize events, you’ll meet a lot of people, and they are just tons of fun! Hostelworld is the best hostel-accommodation website out there, with the largest inventory (房源), best search interface, and highest availability. 22
Take free walking tours. 23 You will love taking walking tours when you travel. You will pass the time and get to learn so much about where you are. They have exploded in popularity in the last few years and you can find them in nearly any major city in the world.
24 This is probably one of the most underused travel tips in the world. Tourism information centers know about everything going on in town. They can point you to free activities, special events happening during your stay, and everything in between. They are also staffed by locals who can tell you all the ins and outs of their city.
A.I use it for all my hostel bookings.
B.You won’t need as much as you think.
C.Always visit the local tourism information center.
D.Hostels are usually located in the heart of the city.
E.It’s good to know a few practical tips to make sure you travel safely.
F.And if you welcome such experiences, it will make your life better, too.
G.Besides being free, these tours will give you a good idea of the city you are visiting.

I Know You Can Do It
I was a non-athletic forty-two-year-old kindergarten teacher. I had three teenage children who went to a youth group at our local church. They were doing a fundraiser to go to summer camp. Ryan, my thirteen-year-old son, approached me and said, “Mom, you should ride in our bikeathon (自行车马拉松).” As he told me the detail, I laughed out loud.
“What makes you think I could finish a twenty-mile bikeathon ” I asked.
My son looked me straight in the eyes. “I know you can do it.”
I almost laughed again, saying I was too old to take part, but my son was serious. I promised to think about it.
I used to cycle frequently and even had taken part in a few races. However, that was back during my college days and early career. Ryan might have come across an old photo of me from that petitive cycling felt like something from the distant past. If I decided to participate in the bikeathon, I would need months of training, new equipment, and my bike would need repairs. I had neither the time nor the desire to do all of that.
I went to kindergarten class the next day and played a familiar counting song. The kids sang with enthusiasm. “Let’s do it again, and this time faster. I know you can do it!”
There it was again: “I know you can do it.”
I decided to have a discussion with the kids after the song was over. We talked about what that meant. I have often started a discussion with great hopes of teaching five-year-olds something, but they miss the idea completely. This time, they were on point. They totally understood that sentence. Sweet little Emma raised her hand and gave me an answer. “Miss, when I don’t know if I can do something, you tell me I can, and so I try. And then I do it,” she said.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Suddenly what she said struck me deeply.

50.【答案】Dear Mr. Smith,
Thank you so much for suggesting I use AI to help learn English. I’ve been using an AI app for the past few weeks, mainly to practice speaking and get instant grammar feedback.
It’s amazing! The app listens to my pronunciation and points out mistakes right away. It also explains grammar rules clearly when I write sentences. I feel my speaking has become much smoother and my grammar is improving quickly.
I’m really excited about this progress and so grateful for your great advice!
Yours,
Li Hua
51.【答案】Suddenly what she said struck me deeply. At that moment, I made my decision. If my words had such power, how much more could my actions affect my children I would ride in the bikeathon, and I would finish it. The training was hard: my muscles ached, and I got blisters on my hands. My son kept encouraging me, “I know you can do it.” He believed in me, and so did I. The day before the race, I was ready. My son and I ate a big pasta dinner together, and then we went to church for the pre-race ceremony.
Finally Bikeath on Day came and after the gun went off, the race began. My son was there cheering for me, along with many other friends and family members. It was amazing! The course was hilly, but I pedaled on, saying to myself, “I know you can do it.” I thought about giving up several times, but when I wanted to quit, my son’s words rang in my head. As I passed the 18 -mile mark, I saw the finish line in the distance. People were cheering. Ryan ran alongside me, shouting, “You can do it, Mom.” When I crossed the line, I felt exhausted but relieved. Never underestimate the power of encouragement and never overestimate what you can achieve if you set your mind to it.
