In the new study, researchers in China randomly assigned 342 adults with prehypertension to one of two groups.The average age of participants was 49.Roughly half the people participated in guided aerobic exercise, including jogging, climbing stairs, and cycling.The other half were trained to practice tai chi.Both groups got hour long sessions four times a week.
After 12 months, those in the tai chi group saw bigger drops in their blood pressure than those in the aerobic exercise group.What's more, nearly 22% of the people who practiced tai chi saw their blood pressure fall to within normal range, compared with nearly 16% of people in the aerobic exercise group.And fewer patients in the tai chi group went on to develop hypertension than in the aerobic exercise group.
So how does tai chi help lower blood pressure “The practice tends to stimulate more of a response from the Parasympathetic Nervous System (副交感神经系统) or PNS for short,” says Ruth Taylor, a professor at the University of Arizona's College of Nursing.The PNS is the network of nerves that relaxes your body after periods of stress or danger.
“The PNS helps us relax everything, and I think it is the response that is lowering blood pressure,” says Ruth Taylor, “I think it's also the meditative quality of tai chi.”
The practice is appealing as a form of exercise because it requires little space or equipment.“I think the beauty of tai chi is that you don't have to own a special gym membership; you don't have to buy special clothing,” Ruth Taylor says.“Once you learn tai chi, you can do it anytime, anyplace, anywhere.And it does make a difference.”

“The PNS helps us relax everything, and I think it is the response that is lowering blood pressure,” says Ruth Taylor, “I think it's also the meditative quality of tai chi.”

In this study, British researchers analyzed data from six studies, involving 15,246 people from five countries, to see how movement behavior across the day is associated with heart health. Dr. Jo Blodgett, first author of the study, said,“The big takeaway from our research is that while small changes to how you move can have a positive effect on heart health, intensity of movement matters. The most beneficial change we observed was to replace sitting with moderate -vigorous activity, which could be a run, a brisk walk, or stair climbing, basically any activity that raises your heart rate and makes you breathe faster, even for a minute or two.”
Dr. Jo Blodgett also pointed out that although time spent doing vigorous activity was the quickest way to improve heart health, there are ways to benefit for people of all abilities — it's just that the lower the intensity of the activity, the longer the time is required to start having a reliable benefit. Using a standing desk for a few hours a day instead of a sitting desk, for example, is not only a change over a relatively large amount of time but is also one that could be combined into a working routine fairly easily as it does not require any time commitment.

(2025·济南模拟)A study, published in European Heart Journal, is the first to assess how different movement patterns throughout the 24 hour day are linked to heart health.
In this study, British researchers analyzed data from six studies, involving 15,246 people from five countries, to see how movement behavior across the day is associated with heart health. Each participant used a wearable device, a key novelty, on their thighs (大腿) to measure their activities throughout the 24 hour day and had their heart health measured.
The researchers identified a series of behaviors that make up a typical 24 hour day, with time spent doing moderate vigorous activity providing the most benefit to heart health, followed by light activity, standing and sleeping compared with the negative impact of sedentary (久坐) behavior. The team modeled what would happen if an individual changed various amounts of one behavior for another each day for a week, in order to estimate the effect on heart health for each scenario. When replacing sedentary behavior, as little as five minutes of moderate vigorous activity had a noticeable effect on heart health.
Dr. Jo Blodgett, first author of the study, said,“The big takeaway from our research is that while small changes to how you move can have a positive effect on heart health, intensity of movement matters. The most beneficial change we observed was to replace sitting with moderate vigorous activity, which could be a run, a brisk walk, or stair climbing, basically any activity that raises your heart rate and makes you breathe faster, even for a minute or two.”
Dr. Jo Blodgett also pointed out that although time spent doing vigorous activity was the quickest way to improve heart health, there are ways to benefit for people of all abilities — it's just that the lower the intensity of the activity, the longer the time is required to start having a reliable benefit. The researchers looked into randomized controlled trials that had reported the effects of exercise interventions, lasting two or more weeks, on blood pressure between 1990 and February 2023.From a review of 270 trials with 15,827 participants, the researchers found that among HIIT (high intensity interval training) isometric exercises, aerobic exercises, dynamic resistance training and a combination of the latter two, isometric exercises led to the greatest reductions in blood pressure.
It's also important to note that there are other lifestyle changes as well as exercise that can benefit your blood pressure. These include keeping to a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, cutting down on salt, not drinking too much alcohol and ensuring that you continue to take any prescribed medication.
More research is needed to determine exactly why isometric exercises might be better for lowering blood pressure than other types of training, the authors said.
