Have you ever imagined talking with people traveling in space Ezekiel Wheeler from the US has been trying to do this since the age of 8. Now, as a homeschooled 13-year-old boy, he made a device (设备) by himself to help others speak to astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS).
When Wheeler was young, playing with batteries and switches was fascinating for him. He almost spent all of his spare time researching on them. When he turned 8, he came up with the idea to communicate with the ISS using ham radio (业余无线电).
To make this happen, a ham radio was not enough. He also needed a satellite tracker (跟踪器). He made his own tracker with a 10-foot-long electric wire (电线), and two more small trackers made of Lego bricks. “I wanted to provide a fun and hands—on way for students to learn more about electrical engineering,” said Wheeler. He also used 3D-printing technology to make a microcontroller and an LCD screen. This screen was able to show a list of stars, satellites and planets the tracker found. This great project helped Wheeler win the second prize in the 2024 Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge.
Wheeler wasn’t only interested in talking to the astronauts himself. He wanted to host the conversation and let his friends talk to them too, asking about everything they wanted to know. For him, science is everything. “I like to face challenges,” he said. “What really encourages me is getting a result that will work.”

The river is facing terrible pollution problems. It gives off a strong and unpleasant smell, which prevents citizens from coming closer. Besides, rubbish like plastic bags and bottles floats everywhere on the water. What’s worse, plenty of dead fish can be seen lying on the riverbank.
There are two main reasons. Factories nearby would pour waste water directly into the river. In addition, local people throw a lot of rubbish into it without realizing the harm.
